The C-nitrosation of bivalent quadridentate β-imino ketone complexes of nickel(II), copper(II), and palladium(II), with nitrosating reagents has been investigated. The chemical analysis and spectroscopic results reveal that one of the α-CH groups of the coordinated lignad undergoes selective nitrosation forming mono(hydroxyimino) derivative. The hydroxyimino group introduced coordinates through either N- or O- atom to metal(II) by dislodging the carbonyl group already coordinated. This gives rise to two linkage isomers, one with N-bonded and the other with O-bonded hydroxyimino group in the case of nickel(II) (except for 1d) and palladium(II), and a single isomer with O-bonded hydroxyimino group in copper(II) complexes. The isomers obtained from 1b and 1i have been separated by column chromatography. In chloroform each of the isomers of nickel(II) isomerizes to give an equilibrium mixture of two isomers, but not those of copper(II) and palladium(II).

L-Lysine D-glutamate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1) with a = 4.902, b = 30.719, c = 9.679 A, beta = 90 degrees and Z = 4. The crystals of L-lysine D-aspartate monohydrate belong to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 5.458, b = 7.152, c = 36.022 A and Z = 4. The structures were solved by the direct methods and refined to R values of 0.125 and 0.040 respectively for 1412 and 1503 observed reflections. The glutamate complex is highly pseudosymmetric. The lysine molecules in it assume a conformation with the side chain staggered between the alpha-amino and the alpha-carboxylate groups. The interactions of the side chain amino groups of lysine in the two complexes are such that they form infinite sequences containing alternating amino and carboxylate groups. The molecular aggregation in the glutamate complex is very similar to that observed in L-arginine D-aspartate and L-arginine D-glutamate trihydrate, with the formation of double layers consisting of both types of molecules. In contrast to the situation in the other three LD complexes, the unlike molecules in L-lysine D-aspartate monohydrate aggregate into alternating layers as in the case of most LL complexes. The arrangement of molecules in the lysine layer is nearly the same as in L-lysine L-aspartate, with head-to-tail sequences as the central feature. The arrangement of aspartate ions in the layers containing them is, however, somewhat unusual. Thus the comparison between the LL and the LD complexes analyzed so far indicates that the reversal of chirality of one of the components in a complex leads to profound changes in molecular aggregation, but these changes could be of more than one type.

Copper(II) complexes Cu(ph-tpy)(B)](ClO4) (1-3), where ph-tpy is (4'-phenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine and B is N,N-donor phenanthroline base, viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq, 2), and dipyridophenazine (dppz, 3), were prepared and characterized from analytical and spectral data. Complex 1, characterized by X-ray crystallography, shows a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN5 coordination geometry having the tridentate ph-tpy ligand at the basal plane and bidentate phen bound to the axial-equatorial sites. The complexes display a d-d band near 650 nm in aqueous DMF. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving the binding order: 3 (dppz) > 2 (dpq) > 1 (phen). The dpq and dppz complexes show photo-induced DNA cleavage activity in red light via photo-redox pathway forming hydroxyl radicals. The cytotoxicity of the dppz complex 3 was studied by MTT assay in HeLa cancer cells. The IC50 values are 3.7 and 12.4 mu M in visible light of 400-700 nm and dark, respectively. Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)] (1-3), where H2L is a Schiff base ligand 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenol and B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen for 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq for 2) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz for 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography shows the presence of an oxovanadium(IV) moiety in a six coordinate VO3N3 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band within 800-850 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative response near 0.7 V versus SCE for V(V)-V(IV) and a reductive response within -1.1 to -1.3 V due to V(IV)-V(III) couple in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values of 4.2 x 10(4) to 1.2 x 10(5) M (1). The complexes do not show any ``chemical nuclease'' activity in dark. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm via O-1(2) pathway and in near-IR light (752.5 to 799.3 nm IR optics) by HO* pathway. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells giving IC50 value of 13 mu M, while it is less toxic in dark (IC50 = 97 mu M). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The 16-electron, coordinatively unsaturated, dicationic ruthenium complex Ru(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf](2) (1a) brings about the heterolysis of the C-H bond in phenylacetylene to afford the phenylacetylide complex trans-Ru(C CPh)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (2). The phenylacetylide complex undergoes hydrogenation to give a ruthenium hydride complex trans-Ru(H)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (3) and phenylacetylene via the addition of H-2 across the Ru-C bond. The 16-electron complex also reacts with HSiCl3 quite vigorously to yield a chloride complex trans-Ru(Cl)(P(OH)(2)(OMe))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (4). On the other hand, the other coordinatively unsaturated ruthenium complex Ru(P(OH)(3))(dppe)(2)]OTf](2) (1b) reacts with a base N-benzylideneaniline to afford a phosphonate complex Ru(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5) via the abstraction of one of the protons of the P(OH)(3) ligand by the base. The phenylacetylide, chloride, and the phosphonate complexes have been structurally characterized. The phosphonate complex reacts with H-2 to afford the corresponding dihydrogen complex trans-Ru(eta(2)-H-2)(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5-H2). The intact nature of the H-H bond in this species was established using variable temperature H-1 spin-lattice relaxation time measurements and the observation of a significant J(H,D) coupling in the HD isotopomer trans-Ru(eta(2)-HD)(P(O)(OH)(2))(dppe)(2)]OTf] (5-HD).
