α-and β-Himachalenes, the two major sesquiterpene components of the essential oil of Himalayan deodar (Cedrus deodara, Loud.) are shown to represent a new sequiterpenoid carbon framework. Evidence is presented which establishes their gross structures.

The proton NMR spectral complexity arising due to severe overlap of peaks hampers their analyses in diverse situations, even by the application of two-dimensional experiments. The selective or complete removal of the couplings and retention of only the chemical shift interactions in indirect dimension aids in the simplification of the spectrum to a large extent with little investment of the instrument time. The present study provides precise enantiodiscrimination employing more anisotropic NMR parameters in the chiral liquid crystalline medium and differentiates the overlapped peaks of many organic molecules and peptides dissolved in isotropic solvents.

A ligand series obtained from V = O stretching frequencies for different monomeric complexes of oxovanadium(IV) is shown to parallel the nephelauxetic series. The ligand series obtained from streching frequencies of other systems are also shown to compare well with the nephelauxetic series rather than the spectrochemical series.

Diphenyl sulphoxide (DPSO) complexes of some divalent metal perchlorates and chlorides are prepared The perchlorates of Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd have the general formula [M(DPSO)6](CIO4)2. The Cu(II) complex is found to have the composition [Cu(DPSO)4] (CIO42. The chloro complex having the formula ZnCl2. 2DPSO, CdCl2.DPSO, HgCl2. DPSO and PdCl2. 2 DPSO have also been obtained. Infrared spectra indicate that the DPSO complexes of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are oxygen-bonded while those of Cd, Hg and Pd are sulphur-bonded. The magnetic susceptibility and the optical spectral data reveal octahedral coordination for Mn, Co and Ni complexes. From the electronic spectra of Co and NI complexes, the ligand field parameters, Dq and β, are calculated.

A total synthesis of (±)-4-isopropyl-trans-decalin-1,6-dione, a key intermediate in the cadinane series, and its conversion into (±)-cadinene dihydrochloride, is reported.

The synthesis of the title compound is described and results of some experiments on the degradation of patchouli alcohol are reported.

Raman spectra of cyclohexane 1,4-dione (I), in chloroform, benzene and water solutions have been recorded. Temperature effect on the spectrum has been studied. The IR spectra of I and its octadeutero analogue in the solid state have also been studied. The spectra have been found on the basis of selection rules applicable for Raman and IR spectra, to be consistent with a single conformer of C2 symmetry. Plausible causes of conformational preference have been discussed.

Acetohydroxy acid isomerase (AHA isomerase) was purified about 110-fold and separated from reductase and acetohydroxy acid isomeroreductase. The AHA isomerase was found to be homogeneous by agar and polyacrylamide gel electrophoreses at different pHs. The properties of AHA isomerase have been studied. The purified enzyme showed requirement for Image -ascorbic acid and sulfate ions for its activity. Synthetic ascorbic acid sulfate could replace Image -ascorbic acid and sulfate. α-Methyllactate and α-ketoisovalerate were found to inhibit AHA isomerase activity competitively whereas Image -valine and Image -isoleucine had no significant inhibitory effect. p-Hydroxymercuribenzoate inhibited AHA isomerase activity and the inhibition was reversed by β-mercaptoethanol.

A study has been made of the stereochemistry of three of the four possible configurational isomers of trimethyl 1-methylcyclohexane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate. Two of the isomers undergo highly stereoselective methylation at the 3-position; the third cannot be methylated under similar conditions. Conformations have been suggested for these three isomers on the basis of n.m.r. results. It is thought that axial ester groups at the 1-position in the first two solvate the axial protons at the 3-position and facilitate their removal by trityl anion, while in the third, which has an axial methyl at the 1-position, the effect is not possible and the anion is not formed. The role of A(1.3) strain in causing the high stereoselectivity and position-specificity in the two cases where alkylation does take place and the reasons for slow inversion at the anion centre at position 3 in one of them are discussed.
Azulenes and related substances—XII *1, , *2: A new azulene synthesis—guaiazulene and Se-Guaiazulene
Resumo:
The new method of azulene synthesis, described in the preceding communication, has been extended to the synthesis of guaiazulene and Se-guaiazulene.

The total synthesis of 8-isotestosterone (II) and the corresponding anthracene analogue (III) following the benzohydrindane route is reported. Catalytic hydrogenation of trans-1β-acetoxy-8-methyl-4,5-(3′-methyl-4′-hydroxybenzo)-hydrindane (V) followed by oxidation has furnished two isomeric tricyclic keto acetates, viz. 1β,2α-(3′-acetoxycyclopentano)-2,5-dimethyl-6-keto-1α,2,3,4,4aα,-5α,6,7,8,8aα-decahydronaphthalene (VII) and 1β,2α-(3′-acetoxycyclopentano)-2,5-dimethyl-6-keto-1α,2,3,4,4aβ,5,6,7,8,8aβ-decahydronaphthalene (IX) which are cis-non-steroid and cis-steroid configurations of the same cyclopentano-cis-decalins. A difference in the direction of enolization of the keto acetate (VII) in alkylation reaction and enol acetylation towards the methine and the methylene carbon atoms respectively has been observed.
