In this work, Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods and Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites have been prepared through a facile hydrothermal route in acidic medium at 200 degrees C for 2 days. The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical discharge-charge cycling in lithium ion battery. XRD pattern exhibits the layered structure of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O and the composite shows the presence of RGO at 2 theta = 25.8 degrees. FTIR spectrum shows that the band at 760 cm(-1) could be assigned to a V-OH2 stretching mode due to coordinated water. Raman spectrum shows that the band at 264 cm(-1) is due to the presence of water molecules between the layers. FESEM/TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanorings of inner diameter 5 mu m and thickness of the ring is found to be 200-300 nm. Addition of exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) destroys the formation of rings. The reduction of EGO sheets into RGO is also evidenced by the red shift of the absorbance peak from 228 nm to 264 nm. In this composite Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods may adhere to the surface of RGO and/or embedded in the RGO nanosheets. As a result, an effective three-dimensional conducting network was formed by bridging RGO nanosheets, which can facilitate electron transport effectively and thus improve the kinetics and rate performance of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods. The Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/RGO composites exhibited a discharge capacity of 340 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 mA g(-1) and also an improved cyclic stability. RGO plays a `flexible confinement' function to enwrap Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods, which can compensate for the volume change and prevent the detachment and agglomeration of pulverized Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O, thus extending the cycling life of the electrode. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings is also discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel and simple route for near-infrared (NIR)-light controlled release of drugs has been demonstrated using graphene oxide (GO) composite microcapsules based on the unique optical properties of GO. Upon NIR-laser irradiation, the microcapsules were ruptured in a point-wise fashion due to local heating which in turn triggers the light-controlled release of the encapsulated anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) from these capsules.

Using all atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations we report a microscopic picture of the carbon nanotube (6,5)-dendrimer complex for PAMAM dendrimers of generations 2 to 4. We study the compact wrapping conformations of the dendrimer onto the nanotube surface for all the three generations of PAMAM dendrimer. A high degree of wrapping for the non-protonated dendrimer is observed as compared to the protonated dendrimer. For comparison, we also study the interaction of another dendrimer, poly(propyl ether imine) (PETIM), with the nanotube. The results of the distance of closest approach as well as the number of close contacts between the nanotube and the dendrimer reveal that the PAMAM dendrimer interacts strongly as compared to the PETIM dendrimer. We also calculate the binding energy between the nanotube and the dendrimer using MM/PBSA methods and attribute the strong binding to the charge transfer between them. Dendrimer wrapping on the CNT will make it soluble and the dendrimer can act as an efficient dispersing agent for the nanotubes.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes possess high conductivity and have advantages compared with their liquid counterparts. The polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer is a good candidate for this purpose. The PEO/SnCl2/polyaniline composite (PSP composites) at different weight percentages were prepared in anhydrous acetonitrile media. Structural studies were carried out of the prepared composites by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, and surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy. The sigma (dc) was carried out by a two-probe method, and it is found that the conductivity increases with an increase in temperature. The temperature-dependent conductivity of the composites exhibits a typical semi-conducting behavior and hence can be explained by the 1D variable range hopping model proposed by Mott. The electrochemical cell parameters for battery applications at room temperature have also been determined. The samples are fabricated for battery application in the configuration of Na: (PSP): (I-2 + C + sample), and their experimental data are measured using Wagner's polarization technique. The cell parameters result in an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V and a short-circuit current of 912 mu A for PSP (70:30:10) composite. Hence, these composites can be used in polymer electrolyte studies.

Electrodeposition of nickel/barium hexa-aluminate (Ni/BHA) composite coatings has been carried out from a Watt's bath on mild steel substrate. BHA powders with plate habit were synthesized by solution combustion synthesis followed by heat treatment to ensure complete conversion to the hexa-aluminate phase. Heat treated material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with X-ray analysis. The dispersion behaviour and stability of BHA suspensions with cationic and anionic surfactants at room temperature were studied by dynamic light scattering under different pH. The influence of BHA concentration in the electrolytic bath, deposition temperature, pH, current density and duty cycle on particle incorporation in the coatings were studied and conditions for maximum particle incorporation were established. Coatings with a roughness of about 0 center dot 4 mu m were produced by using this technique. Effect of BHA content on microhardness was also investigated. A reasonably good thickness of the coatings was achieved in a given set of conditions.

The electrochemical profiles of exfoliated graphite electrodes (EG) and glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were recorded using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry in the presence of various supporting electrolytes and Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-), Ru(NH3)(6)](2+/3+), ferrocene redox probes. In the supporting electrolytes (KCl, H2SO4, NaOH, tetrabutylammoniumtetraflouroborate, phosphate buffers), the potential windows of EG were found in some cases to be about 200 mV larger than that of GCE. The electroactive surface area of EG was estimated to be 19.5 % larger than the GCE which resulted in higher peak currents on the EG electrode. Furthermore, EG was modified with various nanomaterials such as poly (propylene imine) dendrimer, gold nanoparticles, and dendrimer-gold nanoparticles composite. The morphologies of the modified electrodes were studied using scanning electron microscopy and their electrochemical reactivities in the three redox probes were investigated. The current and the reversibility of redox probes were enhanced with the presence of modifiers in different degrees with dendrimer and gold nanoparticles having a favorable edge.

The paper reports the effect of addition of small amount of Mg on the mechanical and oxidation properties of Nb-Nb3Si eutectic composites in Nb-Si system under the condition of suction casting. Mg addition increases the volume fraction of primary dendrites of Nb solid solution. This phase contains significant amount of strengthening precipitates. Two different precipitates are identified. The large plate shaped precipitates are that of hcp phase, while fine coherent precipitates have the structure similar to recently identified delta-Nb11Si2 phase. The Mg addition improves both the strength and ductility of the composite at room temperature (similar to 1.4 GPa and similar to 5% engineering strain) as well as at 700 degrees C(similar to 1.2 GPa and similar to 7% engineering strain). The presence of Mg results in a complex barrier layer which significantly increases the oxidation resistance up to a temperature of at least 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method has been used for the synthesis of colloids of metal nanoparticles. It is a top-down approach involving condensation of metal atoms in low temperature solvent matrices in a SMAD reactor maintained at 77 K. Warming of the matrix results in a slurry of metal atoms that interact with one another to form particles that grow in size. The organic solvent solvates the particles and acts as a weak capping agent to halt/slow down the growth process to a certain extent. This as-prepared colloid consists of metal nanoparticles that are quite polydisperse. In a process termed as digestive ripening, addition of a capping agent to the as-prepared colloid which is polydisperse renders it highly monodisperse either under ambient or thermal conditions. In this, as yet not well-understood process, smaller particles grow and the larger ones diminish in size until the system attains uniformity in size and a dynamic equilibrium is established. Using the SMAD method in combination with digestive ripening process, highly monodisperse metal, core-shell, alloy, and composite nanoparticles have been synthesized. This article is a review of our contributions together with some literature reports on this methodology to realize various nanostructured materials.

A wave-based method is developed to quantify the defect due to porosity and also to locate the porous regions, in a composite beam-type structure. Wave propagation problem for a porous laminated composite beam is modeled using spectral finite element method (SFEM), based on the modified rule of mixture approach, which is used to include the effect of porosity on the stiffness and density of the composite beam structure. The material properties are obtained from the modified rule of mixture model, which are used in a conventional SFEM to develop a new model for solving wave propagation problems in porous laminated composite beam. The influence of the porosity content on the group speed and also the effect of variation in theses parameters on the time responses are studied first, in the forward problem. The change in the time responses with the change in the porosity of the structure is used as a parameter to find the porosity content in a composite beam. The actual measured response from a structure and the numerically obtained time responses are used for the estimation of porosity, by solving a nonlinear optimization problem. The effect of the length of the porous region (in the propagation direction), on the time responses, is studied. The damage force indicator technique is used to locate the porous region in a beam and also to find its length, using the measured wave propagation responses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) are a new class of smart materials that have attractive characteristics such as muscle like softness, low voltage and power consumption, and good performance in aqueous environments. Thus, IPMC’s provide promising application for biomimetic fish like propulsion systems. In this paper, we design and analyze IPMC underwater propulsor inspired from swimming of Labriform fishes. Different fish species in nature are source of inspiration for different biomimetic flapping IPMC fin design. Here, three fish species with high performance flapping pectoral fin locomotion is chosen and performance analysis of each fin design is done to discover the better configurations for engineering applications. In order to describe the behavior of an active IPMC fin actuator in water, a complex hydrodynamic function is used and structural model of the IPMC fin is obtained by modifying the classical dynamic equation for a slender beam. A quasi-steady blade element model that accounts for unsteady phenomena such as added mass effects, dynamic stall, and the cumulative Wagner effect is used to estimate the hydrodynamic performance of the flapping rectangular shape fin. Dynamic characteristics of IPMC actuated flapping fins having the same size as the actual fins of three different fish species, Gomphosus varius, Scarus frenatus and Sthethojulis trilineata, are analyzed with numerical simulations. Finally, a comparative study is performed to analyze the performance of three different biomimetic IPMC flapping pectoral fins.

Polynomial Chaos Expansion with Latin Hypercube sampling is used to study the effect of material uncertainty on vibration control of a smart composite plate with piezoelectric sensors/actuators. Composite material properties and piezoelectric coefficients are considered as independent and normally distributed random variables. Numerical results show substantial variation in structural dynamic response due to material uncertainty of active vibration control system. This change in response due to material uncertainty can be compensated by actively tuning the feedback control system. Numerical results also show variation in dispersion of dynamic characteristics and control parameters with respect to ply angle and stacking sequence.

The assembly of aerospace and automotive structures in recent years is increasingly carried out using adhesives. Adhesive joints have advantages of uniform stress distribution and less stress concentration in the bonded region. Nevertheless, they may suffer due to the presence of defects in bond line and at the interface or due to improper curing process. While defects like voids, cracks and delaminations present in the adhesive bond line may be detected using different NDE methods, interfacial defects in the form of kissing bond may go undetected. Attempts using advanced ultrasonic methods like nonlinear ultrasound and guided wave inspection to detect kissing bond have met with limited success stressing the need for alternate methods. This paper concerns the preliminary studies carried out on detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this attempt, adhesive joint samples containing varied area of kissing bond were prepared using the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRP) as substrates and epoxy resin as the adhesive layer joining them. The samples were also subjected to conventional and high power ultrasonic inspection. Further, these samples were loaded till failure to determine the bond strength during which digital images were recorded and analyzed using the DIC method. This noncontact method could indicate the existence of kissing bonds at less than 50% failure load. Finite element studies carried out showed a similar trend. Results obtained from these preliminary studies are encouraging and further tests need to be done on a larger set of samples to study experimental uncertainties and scatter associated with the method. We report the low temperature electrical and magnetic properties of polypyrrole (PPy)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) coaxial composite fibrils synthesized by the electro-polymerization method. The iron-filled MWNTs were first grown by chemical vapor deposition of a mixture of liquid phase organic compound and ferrocene by the one step method. Then the PPy/MWNT fibrils were prepared by the electrochemical polymerization process. Electron microscopy studies reveal that PPy coating on the surface of nanotube is quite uniform throughout the length. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements were done from room temperature down to 5 and 10 K, respectively. The room temperature resistivity (rho) of PPy/MWNT composite fibril sample is similar to 3.8 Omega m with resistivity ratio R-5 K/R-300 K] of similar to 300, and the analysis of rho(T) in terms of reduced activation energy shows that resistivity lies in the insulating regime below 40 K. The resistivity varies according to three dimensional variable range hopping mechanism at low temperature. The magnetization versus applied field (M-H loop) data up to a field of 20 kOe are presented, displaying ferromagnetic behavior at all temperatures with enhanced coercivities similar to 680 and 1870 Oe at room temperature and 10 K, respectively. The observation of enhanced coercivity is due to significant dipolar interaction among encapsulated iron nanoparticles, and their shape anisotropy contribution as well.

Experimental and theoretical studies on degradation of composite-epoxy adhesive joints were carried out on samples having different interfacial and cohesive properties. Oblique incidence ultrasonic inspection of bonded joints revealed that degradation in the adhesive can be measured by significant variation in reflection amplitude as also by a shift in the minima of reflection spectrum. It was observed that severe degradation of the adhesive leads to failure dominated by interfacial mode. Through this investigation it is demonstrated that a correlation exists between the bond strength and a frequency shift in reflection minimum. The experimental data was validated using analytical models. Though both bulk adhesive degradation and interfacial degradation influences the shift in spectrum minimum, the contribution of the latter was found to be significant. An inversion algorithm was used to determine the interfacial transverse stiffness using the experimental oblique reflection spectrum. The spectrum shift was found to depend on the value of interfacial transverse stiffness using which a qualitative assessment can be made on the integrity of the joint.
