A new method of construction of carbon-carbon bond is described. Thus the dianions generated from the metal-ammonia reduction of substituted benzoic acids readily undergo Michael addition with methyl crotonate resulting in synthetically useful products having a quaternary carbon. Based on this strategy, new syntheses of (+/-)-methyl acorate (14b) and (+/-)-methyl epi-corate (15) are reported.

A simple and rapid affinity chromatographic method for the isolation of aspartate transcarbamylase from germinated seedlings of mung bean (Phaseolus aureus) was developed. A partially purified preparation of the enzyme was chromatographed on an affinity column containing aspartate linked to CNBr-activated Sepharose 4B. Aspartate transcarbamylase was specifically eluted from the column with 10 mImage aspartate or 0.5 Image KCl. The enzyme migrated as a single sharp band during disc electrophoresis at pH 8.6 on polyacrylamide gels. Electrophoresis of the sodium dodecyl sulfate-treated enzyme showed two distinct protein bands, suggesting that the mung bean aspartate transcarbamylase was made up of nonidentical subunits. Like the enzyme purified by conventional procedures, this enzyme preparation also exhibited positive homotropic interactions with carbamyl phosphate and negative heterotropic interactions with UMP. This method was extended to the purification of aspartate transcarbamylase from Lathyrus sativus, Eleucine coracona, and Trigonella foenum graecum.

A new strategy for the total synthesis of methyl 8-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-7-oxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-s-indacene-4-carboxylate 4, a key intermediate in the synthesis of illudalanes, is reported. The key step in this strategy is a new method of preparation of indanones from tetralones. Thus, the furfurylidene derivative of 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1-(2H)-one is oxidised to the dicarboxylic acid 9a which is cyclodehydrated to methyl 7-methoxy-1-oxoindan-4-carboxylate 10. Similar reactions on the tetrahydronaphthalenone 25, obtained from 6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-7-carbaldehyde 11 by sequential transformations including a regiospecific benzylic oxidation resulted in the hexahydro-s-indacenone 4, thus completing a formal synthesis of illudinine 1.

The simple two dimensional C-13-satellite J/D-resolved experiments have been proposed for the visualization of enantiomers, extraction of homo- and hetero-nuclear residual dipolar couplings and also H-1 chemical shift differences between the enantiomers in the anisotropic medium. The significant advantages of the techniques are in the determination of scalar couplings of bigger organic molecules. The scalar couplings specific to a second abundant spin such as F-19 can be selectively extracted from the severely overlapped spectrum. The methodologies are demonstrated on a chiral molecule aligned in the chiral liquid crystal medium and two different organic molecules in the isotropic solutions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Vapor-liquid equilibrium data have been measured for the binary systems methyl ethyl ketone-p-xylene and chlorobenzene-p-xylene, at 685 mmHg pressure. The activity coefficients have been evaluated taking Into consideration the vapor-phase nonideallty. The f-x-y data have been subjected to a thermodynamic consistency test and the activity coefficients have been correlated by the Wilson equation.

This article deals with studies of the dilute solution properties of methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile (MMA-AN) copolymer of 0.415 mole fraction (mf) of acrylonitrile composition. Mark—Houwink parameters for this copolymer have been evaluated in acetonitrile (MeCN), 2-butanone (MEK), dimethyl formamide (DMF), and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL). The Mark-Houwink exponent a in all four solvents at all temperatures is larger than the corresponding values of the parent homopolymers. The solvent power is in the order of DMF < γ–BL < MEK < MeCN; [η] decreases with an increase in temperature, which is behavior characteristic of polymers in good solvent. The unperturbed dimensions (K0) values, obtained by the Stockmayer–Fixman method, are lower than those for the parent homopolymers and depend on solvent as well as temperature. The solute—solvent interaction parameter X1 values are close to 0.5; X1 is independent of temperature. The excess interaction parameter XABvalues are negative. The results for this copolymer system in regard to low second virial coefficient A2, large X1, and high a values suggest that the large extension of these copolymer chains is due to the unusual short-range interactions.

CsHllNO2.C9HilNO2, Mr = 282.3, P1, a = 5.245 (1), b = 5.424 (1), c = 14.414 (2) A, a = 97.86 (1), fl = 93-69 (2), y = 70-48 (2) °, V= 356 A 3, Z = 1, O m = 1-32 (2), Dx = 1.32 g cm-3, h(Mo Ka) = 0-7107 A, g = 5-9 cm-1, F(000) = 158, T= 298 K, R=0.035 for 1518 observed reflections with I>2tr(I). The molecules aggregate in double layers, one ayer made up of L-phenylalanine molecules and the other of D-valine molecules. Each double layer is stabilized by interactions involving main-chain atoms of both types of molecules. The interactions include hydrogen bonds which give rise to two head-to-tail sequences. The arrangement of molecules in the complex is almost the same as that in the structure of DL-valine (and DL-leucine and DL-isoleucine) except for the change in the side chain of L molecules. The molecules in crystals containing an equal number of L and O hydrophobic amino-acid molecules thus appear to aggregate in a similar fashion, irrespective of the precise details of the side chain.

Model building and molecular mechanics studies have been carried out to examine the potential structures for d(GGC/GCC)5 and d(CAG/CTG)5 that might relate to their biological function and association with triplet repeat expansion diseases. Model building studies suggested that hairpin and quadruplex structures could be formed with these repeat sequences. Molecular mechanics studies have demonstrated that the hairpin and hairpin dimmer structures of triplet repeat sequences formed by looping out of the two strands are as favourable as the corresponding B-DNA type hetero duplex structures. Further, at high salt condition, Greek key type quadruplex structures are energetically comparable with hairpin dimer and B-DNA type duplex structures. All tetrads in the quadruplex structures are well stacked and provide favourable stacking energy values. Interestingly, in the energy minimized hairpin dimer and Greek key type quadruplex structures, all the bases even in the non-G tetrads are cyclically hydrogen bonded, even though the A, C and T-tetrads were not hydrogen bonded in the starting structures.
