We report a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) and Ag nanoparticle decorated N-rGO hybrid nanostructures from graphene oxide (GO), metal ions and hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). HMT not only reduces GO and metal ions simultaneously but also acts as the source for the nitrogen (N) dopant. We show that the N-rGO can be used as a metal-free surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate, while the Ag nano-particles decorated N-rGO can be used as an effective SERS substrate as well as a template for decorating various other nanostructures on N-rGO.

Phase equilibria of the system Ca-Ta-O is established by equilibrating eleven samples at 1200 K for prolonged periods and phase identification in quenched samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Four ternary oxides are identified: CaTa4O11, CaTa2O6, Ca2Ta2O7 and Ca4Ta2O9. Isothermal section of the phase diagram is composed using the results. Thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides are measured in the temperature range from 975 to 1275 K employing solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells essentially measure the chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (Ta2O5 + CaTa4O11), (CaTa4O11 + CaTa2O6), (CaTa2O6 + Ca2Ta2O7), and (Ca2Ta2O7 + Ca4Ta2O9) of the pseudo-binary system CaO-Ta2O5. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the four ternary oxides from their component binary oxides Ta2O5 and CaO are given by: Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa4O11) (+/- 482)/J mol(-1) = -58644+21.497 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (CaTa2O6) (+/- 618)/J mol(-1) = -55122+21.893 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca2Ta2O7) (+/- 729)/J mol(-1) = -82562+31.843 (T/K) Delta G(f)((ox))(o) (Ca4Ta2O9) (+/- 955)/J mol(-1) = -126598+48.859 (T/K) The Gibbs energy of formation of the four ternary compounds obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported in the literature. The thermodynamic data and phase diagram are used for understanding the mechanism and kinetics of calciothermic and electrochemical reduction of Ta2O5 to metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A modified solution combustion approach was applied in the synthesis of nanosize SrFeO3-delta (SFO) using single as well as mixture of citric acid, oxalic acid, and glycine as fuels with corresponding metal nitrates as precursors. The synthesized and calcined powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 physisorption methods, and acidic strength by n-butyl amine titration methods. The FT-IR spectra show the lower-frequency band at 599 cm(-1) corresponds to metal-oxygen bond (possible Fe-O stretching frequencies) vibrations for the perovskite-structure compound. TG-DTG confirms the formation temperature of SFO ranging between 850-900 degrees C. XRD results reveal that the use of mixture of fuels in the preparation has effect on the crystallite size of the resultant compound. The average particle size of the samples prepared from single fuels as determined from XRD was similar to 50-35 nm, whereas for samples obtained from mixture of fuels, particles with a size of 30-25 nm were obtained. Specifically, the combination of mixture of fuels for the synthesis of SFO catalysts prevents agglomeration of the particles, which in turn leads to decrease in crystallite size and increase in the surface area of the catalysts. It was also observed that the present approach also impacted the catalytic activity of the SFO in the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene.

The NO2 center dot center dot center dot I supramolecular synthon is a halogen bonded recognition pattern that is present in the crystal structures of many compounds that contain these functional groups. These synthons have been previously distinguished as P, Q, and R types using topological and geometrical criteria. A five step IR spectroscopic sequence is proposed here to distinguish between these synthon types in solid samples. Sets of known compounds that contain the P, Q, and R synthons are first taken to develop IR spectroscopic identifiers for them. The identifiers are then used to create graded IR filters that sieve the synthons. These filters contain signatures of the individual NO2 center dot center dot center dot I synthons and may be applied to distinguish between P, Q, and R synthon varieties. They are also useful to identify synthons that are of a borderline character, synthons in disordered structures wherein the crystal structure in itself is not sufficient to distinguish synthon types, and in the identification of the NO2 center dot center dot center dot I synthons in compounds with unknown crystal structures. This study establishes clear differences for the three different geometries P, Q, and Rand in the chemical differences in the intermolecular interactions contained in the synthons. Our IR method can be conveniently employed when single crystals are not readily available also in high throughput analysis. It is possible that such identification may also be adopted as an input for crystal structure prediction analysis of compounds with unknown crystal structures.

Weak hydrogen bonds of the type C-H center dot center dot center dot X (X: N, O, S and halogens) have evoked considerable interest over the years, especially in the context of crystal engineering. However, association patterns of weak hydrogen bonds are generally difficult to characterize, and yet the identification of such patterns is of interest, especially in high throughput work or where single crystal X-ray analysis is difficult or impossible. To obtain structural information on such assemblies, we describe here a five step IR spectroscopic method that identifies supramolecular synthons in weak hydrogen bonded dimer assemblies, bifurcated systems, and p-electron mediated synthons. The synthons studied here contain C-H groups as hydrogen bond donors. The method involves: (i) identifying simple compounds/cocrystals/salts that contain the hydrogen bonded dimer synthon of interest or linear hydrogen bonded assemblies between the same functionalities; (ii) scanning infrared (IR) spectra of the compounds; (iii) identifying characteristic spectral differences between dimer and linear; (iv) assigning identified bands as marker bands for identification of the supramolecular synthon, and finally (v) identifying synthons in compounds whose crystal structures are not known. The method has been effectively implemented for assemblies involving dimer/linear weak hydrogen bonds in nitrobenzenes (C-H center dot center dot center dot O-NO), nitro-dimethylamino compounds (NMe2 center dot center dot center dot O2N), chalcones (C-H center dot center dot center dot O=C), benzonitriles (C-H center dot center dot center dot N C) and fluorobenzoic acids (C-H center dot center dot center dot F-C). Two other special cases of C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and N-H center dot center dot center dot pi synthons were studied in which the band shape of the C-H stretch in hydrocarbons and the N-H deformation in aminobenzenes was examined.

A paradigm for internally driven matter is the active nematic liquid crystal, whereby the equations of a conventional nematic are supplemented by a minimal active stress that violates time-reversal symmetry. In practice, active fluids may have not only liquid-crystalline but also viscoelastic polymer degrees of freedom. Here we explore the resulting interplay by coupling an active nematic to a minimal model of polymer rheology. We find that adding a polymer can greatly increase the complexity of spontaneous flow, but can also have calming effects, thereby increasing the net throughput of spontaneous flow along a pipe (a ``drag-reduction'' effect). Remarkably, active turbulence can also arise after switching on activity in a sufficiently soft elastomeric solid.

Here, we report the clean and facile synthesis of Pt and Pd nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by the simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the metal ions in Mg/acid medium. As-generated Pt and Pd nanoparticles serve as a heterogeneous catalyst for the further reduction of the rGO by the hydrogen spill-over process. The C/O ratio is much higher as compared to the rGO obtained by the reduction of GO by only Mg/acid. Overall, the process is rapid, facile and green that does not require any toxic chemical agent or any rigorous chemical reactions. We perform the catalytic reduction of 4-nitophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) at room temperature by Pd@rGO and Pt@rGO. The reduction is complete within 35 s for Pd@rGO and 60 s for Pt@rGO when 50 mu g of hybrid catalyst is used for 0.5 ml of 1 mM of 4-NP. In case of ethanol oxidation, the current density for Pd@rGO is comparable to commercial Pt/C but is doubled for Pt@rGO. Overall, both structures show highly stable catalytic activity compared to commercial Pt/C. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Here, we demonstrate an uninterrupted galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) for the synthesis of metallic (Ag, Cu and Sn) and bimetallic (Cu M, M=Ag, Au, Pt and Pd) sponges/dendrites by sacrificing the low reduction potential metals (Mg in our case) in acidic medium. The acidic medium prevents the oxide formation on Mg surface and facilitates the uninterrupted reaction. The morphology of dendritic/spongy structures is controlled by the volume of acid used for this reaction. The growth mechanism of the spongy/dendritic microstructures is explained by diffusion-limited aggregate model (DLA), which is also largely affected by the volume of acid. The significance of this method is that the yield can be easily predicted, which is a major challenge for the commercialization of the products. Furthermore, the synthesis is complete in 1-2 minutes at room temperature. We show that the sponges/dendrites efficiently act as catalysts to reduce 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) using NaBH4-a widely studied conversion process.

3-Aryl-2-propenoic acid derivatives undergo interesting reactions with hot triethylamine. Substrates like 6 having a methoxyl with a nitro in the ortho and cyanoacrylic derivatives in the para positions give O-demethylated products, for example, entacapone 7. On the other hand compounds like 16 having the NO2 in the para and cyanoacrylic in the ortho position undergo reduction and vinylogation. The latter phenomenon is observed in the absence of the NO2 group also. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present experimental work is concerned with the study of amplitude dependent acoustic response of an isothermal coaxial swirling jet. The excitation amplitude is increased in five distinct steps at the burner's Helmholtz resonator mode (i.e., 100 Hz). Two flow states are compared, namely, sub-critical and super-critical vortex breakdown (VB) that occur before and after the critical conical sheet breakdown, respectively. The geometric swirl number is varied in the range 2.14-4.03. Under the influence of external pulsing, global response characteristics are studied based on the topological changes observed in time-averaged 2D flow field. These are obtained from high resolution 2D PIV (particle image velocimetry) in the longitudinal-mid plane. PIV results also illustrate the changes in the normalized vortex core coordinates (r(vcc)/(r(vcc))(0) (Hz), y(vcc)/(y(vcc))(0) (Hz)) of internal recirculation zone (IRZ). A strong forced response is observed at 100 Hz (excitation frequency) in the convectively unstable region which get amplified based on the magnitude of external forcing. The radial extent of this forced response region at a given excitation amplitude is represented by the acoustic response region (b). The topological placement of the responsive convectively unstable region is a function of both the intensity of imparted swirl (characterized by swirl number) and forcing amplitude. It is observed that for sub-critical VB mode, an increase in the excitation amplitude till a critical value shifts the vortex core centre (particularly, the vortex core moves downstream and radially outwards) leading to drastic fanning-out/widening of the IRZ. This is accompanied by similar to 30% reduction in the recirculation velocity of the IRZ. It is also observed that b < R (R: radial distance from central axis to outer shear layer-OSL). At super-critical amplitudes, the sub-critical IRZ topology transits back (the vortex core retracts upstream and radially inwards) and finally undergoes a transverse shrinkage ((r(vcc))/(r(vcc))(0 Hz) decreases by similar to 20%) when b >= R. In contrast, the vortex core of super-critical breakdown mode consistently spreads radially outwards and is displaced further downstream. Finally, the IRZ fans-out at the threshold excitation amplitude. However, the acoustic response region b is still less than R. This is explained based on the characteristic geometric swirl number (S-G) of the flow regimes. The super-critical flow mode with higher S-G (hence, higher radial pressure drop due to rotational effect which scales as Delta P similar to rho u theta(2) and acts inwards towards the center line) compared to sub-critical state imposes a greater resistance to the radial outward spread of b. As a result, the acoustic energy supplied to the super-critical flow mode increases the degree of acoustic response at the pulsing frequency and energizes its harmonics (evident from power spectra). As a disturbance amplifier, the stronger convective instability mode within the flow structure of super-critical VB causes the topology to widen/fan-out severely at threshold excitation amplitude. The self-assembly of p-pyridyl-ended oligo-p-phenylenevinylenes (OPVs) in ethanol leads to the formation of either hollow or solid microrods. The corresponding protonated OPVs with n-butyl chains induce transparent gelation and also gel phase crystallization owing to various synergistic noncovalent interactions. The chloride ion-selective gelation, AIEE and stimuli responsiveness of the gel are also observed.

A generalized explanation is provided for the existence of the red-and blue-shifting nature of X-Z bonds (Z = H, halogens, chalcogens, pnicogens, etc.) in X-Z center dot center dot center dot Y complexes based on computational studies on a selected set of weakly bonded complexes and analysis of existing literature data. The additional electrons and orbitals available on Z in comparison to H make for dramatic differences between the H-bond and the rest of the Z-bonds. The nature of the X-group and its influence on the X-Z bond length in the parent X-Z molecule largely controls the change in the X-Z bond length on X-Z center dot center dot center dot Y bond formation; the Y-group usually influences only the magnitude of the effects controlled by X. The major factors which control the X-Z bond length change are: (a) negative hyperconjugative donation of electron density from X-group to X-Z sigma* antibonding molecular orbital (ABMO) in the parent X-Z, (b) induced negative hyperconjugation from the lone pair of electrons on Z to the antibonding orbitals of the X-group, and (c) charge transfer (CT) from the Y-group to the X-Z sigma* orbital. The exchange repulsion from the Y-group that shifts partial electron density at the X-Z sigma* ABMO back to X leads to blue-shifting and the CT from the Y-group to the sigma* ABMO of X-Z leads to red-shifting. The balance between these two opposing forces decides red-, zero- or blue-shifting. A continuum of behaviour of X-Z bond length variation is inevitable in X-Z center dot center dot center dot Y complexes.

Graphene oxide (GO), prepared by chemical oxidation of graphite, serves as a building block for developing polymeric nanocomposites. However, their application in electrical conductivity is limited by the fact that the oxygen sites on GO trap electrons and impede charge transport. Conducting nanocomposites can be developed by reducing GO. Various strategies have been adopted to either reduce GO ex situ, before the composite preparation, or in situ during the development of the nanocomposites. The current state of research on in situ reduction of GO during the preparation of conducting polymeric nanocomposites is discussed in this review. The mechanism and the efficiency of reduction is discussed with respect to various strategies employed during the preparation of the nanocomposite, the type of polymer used, and the processing conditions employed, etc. Its overall effect on the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites is also discussed and the future outlook in this area is presented.

Intramolecular S center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding and its potential to lock molecular conformation have been examined in the crystal forms of sulfamethizole, a sulfonamide antibiotic. Molecular complexes of sulfamethizole, including salts and cocrystal, have been synthesized, and their crystal structures were analyzed in order to examine the possible conformational preferences of the molecule in various ionic states and supramolecular environments (neutral/cocrystal, anionic salt, and cationic salt forms). The electrostatic potential mapped on Hirshfeld surfaces generated for these crystal forms provides insights into the possible binding modes of the drug in different environments. Further, the observed conformation locking feature has been rationalized in terms of the experimental charge density features of the intramolecular S center dot center dot O chalcogen bonding in sulfamethizole. The study quantitatively illustrates and rationalizes an intriguing case of a local minimum of molecular conformation being exclusively preferred over the global minimum, as it facilitates more efficient intermolecular interactions in a supramolecular environment.
