In this work, a procedure is presented for the reconstruction of biological organs from image sequences obtained through CT-scan. Although commercial software, which can accomplish this task, are readily available, the procedure presented here needs only free software. The procedure has been applied to reconstruct a liver from the scan data available in literature. 3D biological organs obtained this way can be used for the finite element analysis of biological organs and this has been demonstrated by carrying out an FE analysis on the reconstructed liver.

The rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta and Hanuman langur Presbytis entellus are distributed all over the State of Himachal Pradesh, India. Although both species inhabit forested areas, only rhesus monkeys seem also to have become urbanized. There are about 200,000 rhesus monkeys and 120,000 Hanuman langurs. A three-year survey at Shimla showed an increasing trend in their populations. Potential threats to survival of these primates differ in the 12 districts. The two species differ in feeding and habitat preferences. People's feelings, perceptions and attitudes reward them point to an incipient man-monkey conflict and erosion of conservation ethics. A comprehensive management plan for these primates should be formulated, and involve local people. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) nanotubes prepared by a novel sal-gel template method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations demonstrated that the postannealed (650 degrees C for 1 h) PMN-PT nanotubes were polycrystalline with perovskite crystal structure. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) shows that as prepared PMN-PT nanotubes were hollow with diameter to be about 200 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that the obtained PMN-PT nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (10-20 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis confirmed the stoichiometric 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3). The possible formation mechanism of PMN-PT nanotubes was proposed at the end. A range of novel chiral tellurium compounds having an azomethine functional group in the position ortho to tellurium has been synthesized by the reaction of the tellurium-containing aldehydes bis(o-formylphenyl) telluride (1) and o-(butyltelluro)benzaldehyde (4) with chiral amines (R)-(+)-(1-pheylethylamine) and (1R,2S)-(-)-norephedrine, respectively. The precursor aldehydes were prepared by using a reported procedure with slight but advantageous modifications. During the preparation of o-(butyltelluro)benzaldehyde, interesting side products, namely bis(o-formylphenyl) ditelluride ethylene acetal 5, bis(o-formylphenyl) tritelluride (6), and bis(o-formylphenyl) ditelluride (7) were isolated in moderate yields. The ditelluride 7 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The liquid Schiff bases 10 and 11 were further characterized by derivatizing with liquid bromine. The title compound was obtained in excellent yield by reacting the Schiff base 11 with elemental bromine. Detailed NMR studies indicated the presence of a rigid environment for the hydroxyl group. Single-crystal X-ray determinations of the crystals obtained from the different batches indicated. the presence of the two pseudopolymorphic forms 13a and 13b, respectively. In the case of 13a there is one molecule of CH3CN as solvent of crystallization, whereas in 13b half a molecule of CH3CN per molecule of the title compound lies along the 2-fold axis. In 13a the hydroxyl hydrogen is hydrogen-bonded to the nitrogen of the solvent molecule, whereas in 13b it is hydrogen-bonded to the bromine of the neighboring molecule.

The synthesis of some functionalised isomeric, symmetrical tetrathiafulvalene derivatives containing 4,5-(ethylenedithio)-1,3-dithiole and 4,5-(propylenedithio)-1,3-dithiole units is described. These contain hydroxy, chloro and cyano functionalities (4, 6, 9 and 12). Interestingly, attempted coupling of 4,5-bis(propargylthio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione 13, to obtain the corresponding TTF, 14 afforded the novel thione, 5-methylthieno[2,3-d]-1,3-dithiole-2-thione 15. Self coupling of thione 15 in the presence of trimethyl phosphite afforded new functionalised dithiophenetetrathiafulvalene 16. The X-ray crysal structures of 4,5-bis(propargyldithio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione 13 and 5-methylthieno[2,3-d]-1,3-dithiole-2-thione 15 are described. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A numerical approach for coupling the temperature and concentration fields using a micro/macro dual scale model for a solidification problem is presented. The dual scale modeling framework is implemented on a hybrid explicit-implicit solidification scheme. The advantage of this model lies in more accurate consideration of microsegregation occurring at micro-scale using a subgrid model. The model is applied to the case of solidification of a Pb-40% Sn alloy in a rectangular cavity. The present simulation results are compared with the corresponding experimental results reported in the literature, showing improvement in macrosegregation predictions. Subsequently, a comparison of macrosegregation prediction between the results of the present method with those of a parameter model is performed, showing similar trends.

Inelastic light scattering studies on a single crystal of electron-doped Ca(Fe0.95Co0.05)(2)As-2 superconductor, covering the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition as well as the magnetic transition at T-SM similar to 140 K and the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 23 K, reveal evidence for superconductivity-induced phonon renormalization. In particular, the phonon mode near 260 cm(-1) shows hardening below T-c, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. All three Raman active phonon modes show anomalous temperature dependence between room temperature and T-c, i.e. the phonon frequency decreases with lowering temperature. Further, the frequency of one of the modes shows a sudden change in temperature dependence at TSM. Using first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we show that the low temperature phase (T-c < T < T-SM) exhibits short-ranged stripe antiferromagnetic ordering, and estimate the spin-phonon couplings that are responsible for these phonon anomalies.

Triterpenoids are pentacyclic secondary metabolites present in many terrestrial plants. Natural triterpenoids have been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic activities. Here, we show that modifications of ring A of boswellic acid (2 cyano, 3 enone) resulted in a highly active growth inhibitory, anti-inflammatory, pro-differentiative and anti-tumour triterpenoid compound called cyano enone of methyl boswellates (CEMB). This compound showed cytotoxic activity on a number of cancer cell lines with IC50 ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 mu M. CEMB inhibits DNA synthesis and induces apoptosis in A549 cell line at 0.25 mu M and 1 mu M concentrations, respectively. CEMB induces adipogenic differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells at a concentration of 0.1 mu M. Finally, administration of CEMB intra-tumourally significantly inhibited the growth of C6 glioma tumour xenograft in immuno-compromised mice. Collectively, these results suggest that CEMB is a very potent anti-tumour compound.

Integrity enhancement of damaged or design deficient structures through repairs is attracting considerable engineering attention. Bonded composite patch repairs to cracked metallic sheets offer various advantages over riveted doubler type, particularly for airframe applications. This paper first reviews the R&D activity in the area of structural repairs. It then approaches the problem of a composite patch repair to a cracked aluminium sheet with different finite element modelling strategies and compares their outcome. The efficient finite element modelling approach thus established is used to study the effect of patch material, patch size, patch symmetry and adhesive thickness on repair performance as the crack grows in the repair configuration. This paper presents nonlinear finite element analysis of adhesively bonded joints considering the elastoviscoplastic constitutive model of the adhesive material and the finite rotation of the joint. Though the adherends have been assumed to be linearly elastic, the yielding of the adhesive is represented by a pressure sensitive modified von Mises yield function. The stress-strain relation of the adhesive is represented by the Ramberg-Osgood relation. Geometric nonlinearity due to finite rotation in the joint is accounted for using the Green-Lagrange strain tensor and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor in a total Lagrangian formulation. Critical time steps have been calculated based on the eigenvalues of the transition matrices of the viscoplastic model of the adhesive. Stability of the viscoplastic solution and time dependent behaviour of the joints are examined. A parametric study has been carried out with particular reference to peel and shear stress along the interface. Critical zones for failure of joints have been identified. The study is of significance in the design of lap joints as well as on the characterization of adhesive strength. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Design, analysis and technology for the integrity enhancement of damaged or underdesigned structures continues to be an engineering challenge. Bonded composite patch repairs to metallic structures is receiving increased attention in the recent years. It offers various advantages over rivetted doubler, particularly for airframe repairs. This paper presents an experimental investigation of residual strength and fatigue crack-growth life of an edge-cracked aluminium specimen repaired using glass epoxy composite patch. The investigation begins with the evaluation of three different surface treatments from bond strength viewpoint. A simple thumb rule formula is employed to estimate the patch size. Cracked and repaired specimens are tested under static and fatigue loading. The patch appears to restore the original strength of the undamaged specimen and enhance the fatigue crack growth life by an order of magnitude. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a novel hypothesis on the function of massive feedback pathways in mammalian visual systems. We propose that the cortical feature detectors compete not for the right to represent the output at a point, but for exclusive rights to abstract and represent part of the underlying input. Feedback can do this very naturally. A computational model that implements the above idea for the problem of line detection is presented and based on that we suggest a functional role for the thalamo-cortical loop during perception of lines. We show that the model successfully tackles the so called Cross problem. Based on some recent experimental results, we discuss the biological plausibility of our model. We also comment on the relevance of our hypothesis (on the role of feedback) to general sensory information processing and recognition. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. The moisture absorption and changes in compression strengths in glass-epoxy (G-E composites without and with discrete quantities of graphite powders introduced into the resin mix prior to its spreading on specific glass fabric (layers) during the lay-up (stacking) sequence forms the subject matter of this report. The results point to higher moisture absorption for graphite bearing specimens. The strengths of graphite-free coupons show a continuous decrease, while the filler bearing ones show an initial rise followed by a drop for larger exposure times. Scanning Fractographic features were examined for an understanding of the process. The observations were explained invoking the effect of matrix plasticizing and the role of interfacial regions.

The serendipitous observation of a C-H...O hydrogen bond mediated polypeptide chain reversal in synthetic peptide helices has led to a search for the occurrence of a similar motif in protein structures. From a dataset of 634 proteins, 1304 helices terminating in a Schellman motif have been examined. The C-H...O interaction between the T - 4 (CH)-H-alpha and T + 1 C=O group (C...O 3.5 Angstrom) becomes possible only when the T + 1 residue adopts an extended beta conformation (T is defined as the helix terminating residue adopting an alpha(L) conformation). In all, 111 examples of this chain reversal motif have been identified and the compositional and conformational. preferences at positions T - 4, T, and T + 1 determined. A marked preference for residues like Set, Glu and Gln is observed at T - 4 position with the motif being further stabilized by the formation of a side-chain-backbone O...H-N hydrogen bond involving the side-chain of residue T - 4 and the N-H group of residue T + 3. In as many as 57 examples, the segment following the helix was extended with three to four successive residues in beta conformation. In a majority of these cases, the succeeding beta strand lies approximately antiparallel with the helix, suggesting that the backbone C-H...O interactions may provide a means of registering helices and strands in an antiparallel orientation. Two examples were identified in which extended registry was detected with two sets of C-H...O hydrogen bonds between (T - 4) (CH)-H-alpha...C=O (T + 1) and (T - 8) (CH)-H-alpha...C=O (T + 3). 0 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
