An as-cast Al-7 % Si alloy was processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) for up to 10 turns at temperatures of 298 or 445 K. The HPT-processed samples had ultrafine-grained structures and they were tested in tension at room temperature at various strain rates in the range from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 1.0 x 10(-2) s(-1). The contributions of grain boundary sliding (GBS) to the total strain were measured directly using atomic force microscopy. Samples simultaneously showing both high strength and high ductility contained the highest fractions of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGB) and exhibited the highest contributions from GBS, whereas samples showing high strength but low ductility gave negligible values for the sliding contributions. It is concluded that high strength and high ductility require both an ultrafine grain size and a high fraction of HAGB.

This paper presents modification of the derivation of a previously proposed constitutive model for the prediction of stress-strain behavior of municipal solid waste (MSW) incorporating different mechanisms, such as immediate compression under loading, mechanical creep, and time-dependent biodegradation effect. The model is based on critical state soil mechanics incorporating increments in volumetric strains because of elastic, plastic, creep, and biodegradation effects. The improvement introduced in this paper is the modified critical state surface and considers five variable parameters for the estimation of stress-strain behavior of MSW under different loading conditions. In addition, an expression for the strain hardening rule is derived, with considerations of time-dependent mechanical creep and biodegradation effects. The model is validated using results from experimental studies and data from published literature. The results are also compared with the predictions of the stress-strain response obtained from a well-established hyperbolic model. (c) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Strength and stiffness properties of municipal solid waste (MSW) are important in landfill design. This paper presents the results of comprehensive testing of shear strength properties of mechanically biologically treated municipal solid waste (MBT-MSW) in laboratory. Changes in shear strength of MSW as a function of unit weight and particle size were investigated by performing laboratory studies on the MSW collected from Mavallipura landfill site in Bangalore. Direct shear tests, small scale and large scale consolidated undrained and drained triaxial tests were conducted on reconstituted compost reject MSW samples. The triaxial test results showed that the MSW samples exhibited a strain-hardening behaviour and the strength of MSW increased with increase in unit weight. Consolidated drained tests showed that the mobilized shear strength of the MSW increased by 40% for a unit weight increase from 7.3 kN/m(3) to 10.3 kN/m(3) at 20% strain levels. The mobilized cohesion and friction angle ranged from 5 to 9 kPa and 8 degrees to 33 degrees corresponding to a strain level of 20%. The consolidated undrained tests exhibited reduced friction angle values compared to the consolidated drained tests. The friction angle increased with increase in the unit weight from 8 degrees to 55 degrees in the consolidated undrained tests. Minor variations were found in the cohesion values. Relationships for strength and stiffness of MSW in terms of strength and stiffness ratios are developed and discussed. The stiffness ratio and the strength ratio of MSW were found to be 10 and 0.43. Photocatalytic degradation of estriol (E3) in an aqueous medium was investigated in the presence of TiO2 microcrystallized glass plates. To begin with, transparent glasses associated with the composition 0.4BaO-0.4TiO(2)-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated by the conventional melt-quench technique and subsequently subjected to controlled heat treatment at an appropriate temperature to grow anatase TiO2 microcrystals in the glass matrix. The fabricated samples were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to obtain thermal, structural and microstructural details. The photocatalytic activity of glass samples for estriol degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The limit of detection for estriol using fluorescence spectroscopy was analyzed. The results showed that microcrystallized TiO2 glass composites have more photocatalytic activity than as quenched glass. The degradation rate coefficient of microcrystallized TiO2 glass composite (334.54 min(-1) m(-2)) was found to be ten times larger than that of the as-quenched BTBO glasses (37.74 min(-1) m(-2)) implying that the anatase phase of TiO2 in BTBO glasses was responsible for high photocatalytic activity of estriol degradation. A unique approach was adopted to drive the multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to the interface of immiscible PVDF-ABS blends by wrapping the nanotubes with a mutually miscible homopolymer (PMMA). A tailor made interface with an improved stress transfer was achieved in the blends with PMMA wrapped MWNTs. This manifested in an impressive 108% increment in the tensile strength and 48% increment in the Young's modulus with 3 wt% PMMA wrapped MWNTs in striking contrast to the neat blends. As the PMMA wrapped MWNTs localized at the interface of PVDF-ABS blends, the electrical conductivity could be tuned with respect to only MWNTs, which were selectively localized in the PVDF phase, driven by thermodynamics. The electromagnetic shielding properties were assessed using a vector network analyser in a broad range of frequency, X-band (8-12 GHz) and Ku-band (12-18 GHz). Interestingly, enhanced EM shielding was achieved by this unique approach. The blends with only MWNTs shielded the EM waves mostly by reflection however, the blends with PMMA wrapped MWNTs (3 wt%) shielded mostly by absorption (62%). This study opens new avenues in designing materials, which show simultaneous improvement in mechanical, electrical conductivity and EM shielding properties.

Corona is an unavoidable phenomena in high voltage power transmission system, in spite of suitably designed insulator accessories and transmission line hardware. It is a proven fact that the continuous occurrence of corona can subject the polymeric insulator to a severe degradation. Further, moisture in the air has a positive influence on the corona activity. This paper presents the methodology to evaluate the corona performance of the silicone rubber housing material with simultaneous application of cold fog. Analysis conducted after corona treatment by the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) present an interesting results showing a higher hydroxylation of sample surface under the moisture application than in the normal condition for both AC and DC excitation. FTIR spectrum also indicates the presence of nitric acid on the treated surface with coldfog application. Results obtained from SEM analysis are also presented.

This study demonstrates the synthesis of TiO2 nanobelts using solution combustion derived TiO2 with enhanced photocatalytic activity for dye degradation and bacterial inactivation. Hydrothermal treatment of combustion synthesized TiO2 resulted in unique partially etched TiO2 nanobelts and Ag3PO4 was decorated using the co-precipitation method. The catalyst particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, BET surface area analysis, diffuse reflectance and electron microscopy. The photocatalytic properties of the composites of Ag3PO4 with pristine combustion synthesized TiO2 and commercial TiO2 under sunlight were compared. Therefore the studies conducted proved that the novel Ag3PO4/unique combustion synthesis derived TiO2 nanobelt composites exhibited extended light absorption, better charge transfer mechanism and higher generation of hydroxyl and hole radicals. These properties resulted in enhanced photodegradation of dyes and bacteria when compared to the commercial TiO2 nanocomposite. These findings have important implications in designing new photocatalysts for water purification.

Developments of aluminum alloys that can retain strength at and above 250 degrees C present a significant challenge. In this paper we report an ultrafine scale Al-Fe-Ni eutectic alloy with less than 3.5 aa transition metals that exhibits room temperature ultimate tensile strength of similar to 400 MPa with a tensile ductility of 6-8%. The yield stress under compression at 300 degrees C was found to be 150 MPa. We attribute it to the refinement of the microstructure that is achieved by suction casting in copper mold. The characterization using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals an unique composite structure that contains the Al-Al3Ni rod eutectic with spacing of similar to 90 nm enveloped by a lamellar eutectic of Al-Al9FeNi (similar to 140 nm). Observation of subsurface deformation under Vickers indentation using bonded interface technique reveals the presence of extensive shear banding during deformation that is responsible for the origin of ductility. The dislocation configuration in Al-Al3Ni eutectic colony indicates accommodation of plasticity in alpha-Al with dislocation accumulation at the alpha-Al/Al3Ni interface boundaries. In contrast the dislocation activities in the intermetallic lamellae are limited and contain set of planner dislocations across the plates. We present a detailed analysis of the fracture surface to rationalize the origin of the high strength and ductility in this class of potentially promising cast alloy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Fretting is of a serious concern in many industrial components, specifically, in nuclear industry for the safe and reliable operation of various component and/or system. Under fretting condition small amplitude oscillations induce surface degradation in the form of surface cracks and/or surface wear. Comprehensive experimental studies have been carried out simulating different fretting regimes under ambient and vacuum (10(-9) MPa) conditions and, temperature up to 400 degrees C. Studies have been carried out with stainless steel spheres on stainless steel flats, and stainless steel spheres against chromium carbide, with 25% nickel chrome binder coatings. Mechanical responses are correlated with the damage observed. It has been observed that adhesion plays a vital role in material degradation process, and its effectiveness depends on mechanical variables such as normal load, interfacial tangential displacement, characteristics of the contacting bodies and most importantly on the environment conditions. Material degradation mechanism for ductile materials involved severe plastic deformation, which results in the initiation or nucleation of cracks. Ratcheting has been observed as the governing damage mode for crack nucleation under cyclic tangential loading condition. Further, propagation of the cracks has been observed under fatigue and their orientation has been observed to be governed by the contact conditions prevailing at the contact interface. Coated surfaces show damage in the form of brittle fracture and spalling of the coatings. Existence of stick slip has been observed under high normal load and low displacement amplitude. It has also been observed that adhesion at the contact interface and instantaneous cohesive strength of the contacting bodies dictates the occurrence of material transfer. The paper discusses the mechanics and mechanisms involved in fretting damage under controlled environment conditions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out using lamb waves to study the degradation in adhesive joints made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) adherends and epoxy adhesive. Degradation was inducted into the epoxy adhesive by adding different amounts of polyvinyl alcohol. Fundamental lamb wave modes were excited in the CFRP adherends using piezoelectric transducer disks and made to propagate through the adhesive layer. The received waveforms across adhesive joints with varied degradation were studied. A 2D finite element model was utilized to verify the experimental results. Good correlation was observed between numerical and experimental results. Details of the investigation and results obtained are presented in the paper.

The present paper reports a new class of Co based superalloys that has gamma-gamma' microstructure and exhibits much lower density compared to other commercially available Co superalloys including Co-Al-W based alloys. The basic composition is Co-10Al-5Mo (at%) with addition of 2 at% Ta for stabilization of gamma' phase. The gamma-gamma' microstructure evolves through solutionising and aging treatment. Using first principles calculations, we observe that Ta plays a crucial role in stabilizing gamma' phase. By addition of Ta in the basic stoichiometric composition Co-3(Al, Mo), the enthalpy of formation (Delta H-f) of L1(2) structure (gamma' phase) becomes more negative in comparison to DO19 structure. The All of the L12 structure becomes further more negative by the occupancy of Ni and Ti atoms in the lattice suggesting an increase in the stability of the gamma' precipitates. Among large number of alloys studied experimentally, the paper presents results of detailed investigations on Co-10Al-5Mo-2Ta, Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta and Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta-2Ti. To evaluate the role alloying elements, atom probe tomography investigations were carried out to obtain partition coefficients for the constituent elements. The results show strong partitioning of Ni, Al, Ta and Ti in ordered gamma' precipitates. 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this article, the SrFeO3-delta photocatalyst was synthesized by a solution combustion method and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous nitrobenzene in the presence and absence of H2O2. The SrFeO3-delta photocatalyst was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, TEM, TG-DTG, XPS, and UV visible spectroscopy. The band gap energy of SrFeO3-delta was found to be 3.75 eV which lies in the UV region. The XPS results indicate that the oxidation state of Sr and Fe in SrFeO3-delta was 2+ and 3+, respectively, and the surface atomic ratio of Sr and Fe is 0.995. The photocatalytic activity reveals that the degradation of nitrobenzene over the SrFeO3-delta catalyst itself (UV/SFO) is superior compared to SrFeO3-delta in the presence of H2O2 (UV/SFO/H2O2) with a degradation efficiency of 99-96%. The degradation of nitrobenzene obeys first-order kinetics in both UV/SFO and UV/SFO/H2O2 processes. The decrease in degradation efficiency with UV/SFO/H2O2 was attributed due to the formation of strontium carbonate on the photocatalyst surface.

The role of gypsum on the strength of lime treated soils after a long period of interaction is not well understood yet. The present study is performed to scrutinize the physical and strength behavior of lime treated soil with varying gypsum content. Lime and gypsum contents varying from 0 to 6% are considered in the present study for curing periods up to 28 days. To understand the long-term effects, the work has been extended up to 365 days, particularly with the use of 6% lime content and varying gypsum contents. Atterberg's limits turned out to be marginally affected by cation exchange. Unconfined compressive strength behavior of lime treated soil varies considerably with gypsum content and curing period. However, trivial alteration in strength is observed in the soil treated with lower lime content (up to 4%) and gypsum content up to 6%. On the contrary, strength of soil-6% lime mixture with addition of varying gypsum content shows acceleration in early strength at 14 days curing period. However, the strength at 28 days of curing declines but regains afterwards for 90 days. The trend at longer curing period for 180 and 365 days is, however, not unique but varies with gypsum contents. An attempt has been made to explain these changes on the basis of the form of gypsum, formation and conversion of reacted compounds (CASHH, CASH, MI and Ettringite). The proposed explanations were supported by detailed characterization through thermal analysis, XRD, SEM and EDAX studies of soil-lime-gypsum mixtures. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Geocells are three-dimensional expandable panels with a wide range of applications in geotechnical engineering. A geocell is made up of many internally connected single cells. The current study discusses the joint strength and the wall deformation characteristics of a single cell when it is subjected to uniaxial compression. The study helps to understand the causes for the failure of the single cell in a cellular confinement system. Experimental studies were conducted on single cells with cell pockets filled up with three different infill materials, namely silty clay, sand, and the aggregates. The results of the experimental study revealed that the deformation of the geocell wall decreases with the increase in the friction angle of the infill material. Experimental results were also validated using numerical simulations carried out using Lagrangian analysis software. The experiment and the numerical results were found to be in good agreement with each other. A simple analytical model based on the theory of thin cylinders is also proposed to calculate the accumulated strain of the geocell wall. This model operates under a simple elastic solution framework. The proposed model slightly overestimates the strains as compared with experimental and numerical values. The present study examines the efficacy of a high strength pulsed magnetic field (PMF) towards bacterial inactivation in vitro, without compromising eukaryotic cell viability. The differential response of prokaryotes Staphylococcus aureus (MESA), Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Escherichia coli], and eukaryotes C2C12 mouse myoblasts and human mesenchymal stem cells, hMSCs] upon exposure to varying PMF stimuli (1-4 T, 30 pulses, 40 ms pulse duration) is investigated. Among the prokaryotes, similar to 60% and similar to 70% reduction was recorded in the survival of staphylococcal species and E. coli, respectively at 4 T PMF as evaluated by colony forming unit (CPU) analysis and flow cytometry. A 2-5 fold increase in intracellular ROS (reactive oxygen species) levels suggests oxidative stress as the key mediator in PMF induced bacterial death/injury. The 4 T PMF treated staphylococci also exhibited longer doubling times. Both TEM and fluorescence microscopy revealed compromised membranes of PMF exposed bacteria. Under similar PMF exposure conditions, no immediate cytotoxicity was recorded in C2C12 mouse myoblasts and hMSCs, which can be attributed to the robust resistance towards oxidative stress. The ion interference of iron containing bacterial proteins is invoked to analytically explain the PMF induced ROS accumulation in prokaryotes. Overall, this study establishes the potential of PMF as a bactericidal method without affecting eukaryotic viability. This non-invasive stimulation protocol coupled with antimicrobial agents can be integrated as a potential methodology for the localized treatment of prosthetic infections. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
