The transient changes in resistances of Cr0.8Fe0.2NbO4 thick film sensors towards specified concentrations of H-2, NH3, acetonitrile, acetone, alcohol, cyclohexane and petroleum gas at different operating temperatures were recorded. The analyte-specific characteristics such as slopes of the response and retrace curves, area under the curve and sensitivity deduced from the transient curve of the respective analyte gas have been used to construct a data matrix. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to this data and the score plot was obtained. Distinguishing one reducing gas from the other is demonstrated based on this approach, which otherwise is not possible by measuring relative changes in conductivity. This methodology is extended for three Cr0.8Fe0.2NbO4 thick film sensor array operated at different temperatures. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The chiral sensing property of helicin (the derivative of natural product obtained by partial oxidation of salicin, extracted from willow tree (Salix helix)) is reported. The use of helicin as a chiral derivatizing agent for the discrimination of amines and amino alcohols is convincingly established using H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The large chemical shift separation achieved between the discriminated peaks facilitated the accurate quantification of enantiomeric composition. The consistent trend observed in the shifting of imine proton peak (Delta delta) of helicin in all the derivatized molecules might aid the determination of spatial configuration. Ni2+ ion induced unusual conductivity reversal and an enhancement in the gas sensing properties of ferrites based gas sensors, is reported. The Co1-xNixFe2O4 (for x = 0, 0.5 and 1) nanoparticles were synthesized by wet chemical co-precipitation method and gas sensing properties were studied as a function of composition and temperature. The structural, morphological and microstructural characterization revealed crystallite size of in the range 10-20 nm with porous morphology consisting of nano-sized grains. The Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping confirms homogeneous distribution of Co, Ni, Fe and O elements in the ferrites. The non-stoichiometry of the inverse spinel type ferrites and the relative concentration of Ni3+/Co3+ defects were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that the addition of Ni2+ ions into cobalt ferrite shows preferred selectivity towards CO gas at high temperature (325 degrees C) and ethanol gas at low temperature (250 degrees C), unlike undoped cobalt ferrite or undoped nickel ferrite, which show similar response for both these gases. Moreover, an unusual conductivity reversal is observed, except cobalt ferrite due to the difference in reactivity of the gases as well as characteristic non-stoichiometry of ferrites. This behavior is highly gas ambient dependent and hence can be well-exploited for selective detection of gases. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultralight and macroporous three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide (rGO) foams are prepared by lyophilization (freeze-drying) technique to avoid a conventional template method. This method allows tailoring the porosity of the foams by varying the weight percentages of graphene oxide dispersions in water. Three different rGO foams of 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 wt% are used for NO2 sensing. Sensing response from the tailored structure of rGO is found to be directly related to the density. A maximum of 20% sensing response is observed for a higher porosity of the structure, better than the known results so far on graphene foams in the literature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. We report the implementation of a micro-patterned, glass-based photonic sensing element that is capable of label-free biosensing. The diffractive optical analyzer is based on the differential response of diffracted orders to bulk as well as surface refractive index changes. The differential read-out suppresses signal drifts and enables time-resolved determination of refractive index changes in the sample cell. A remarkable feature of this device is that under appropriate conditions, the measurement sensitivity of the sensor can be enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude due to interference between multiply reflected diffracted orders. A noise-equivalent limit of detection (LoD) of 6 x 10(-7) was achieved with this technique with scope for further improvement.

This paper considers the problem of energy-based, Bayesian spectrum sensing in cognitive radios under various fading environments. Under the well-known central limit theorem based model for energy detection, we derive analytically tractable expressions for near-optimal detection thresholds that minimize the probability of error under lognormal, Nakagami-m, and Weibull fading. For the Suzuki fading case, a generalized gamma approximation is provided, which saves on the computation of an integral. In each case, the accuracy of the theoretical expressions as compared to the optimal thresholds are illustrated through simulations.

In this paper, we study two multi-dimensional Goodness-of-Fit tests for spectrum sensing in cognitive radios. The multi-dimensional scenario refers to multiple CR nodes, each with multiple antennas, that record multiple observations from multiple primary users for spectrum sensing. These tests, viz., the Interpoint Distance (ID) based test and the h, f distance based tests are constructed based on the properties of stochastic distances. The ID test is studied in detail for a single CR node case, and a possible extension to handle multiple nodes is discussed. On the other hand, the h, f test is applicable in a multi-node setup. A robustness feature of the KL distance based test is discussed, which has connections with Middleton's class A model. Through Monte-Carlo simulations, the proposed tests are shown to outperform the existing techniques such as the eigenvalue ratio based test, John's test, and the sphericity test, in several scenarios.

Investigations on chromium niobate (CrNbO4) have shown that the material responds to a wide hydrogen concentration range of 0.01%-0.40% at 613 K. The conductivity of CrNbO4 is independent of oxygen partial pressure and offers to be a promising candidate for monitoring H-2 in radioactive spent fuel storage facilities. Reduction of metal ions to lower valence states during hydrogen sensing was evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies.

This paper considers decentralized spectrum sensing, i.e., detection of occupancy of the primary users' spectrum by a set of Cognitive Radio (CR) nodes, under a Bayesian set-up. The nodes use energy detection to make their individual decisions, which are combined at a Fusion Center (FC) using the K-out-of-N fusion rule. The channel from the primary transmitter to the CR nodes is assumed to undergo fading, while that from the nodes to the FC is assumed to be error-free. In this scenario, a novel concept termed as the Error Exponent with a Confidence Level (EECL) is introduced to evaluate and compare the performance of different detection schemes. Expressions for the EECL under general fading conditions are derived. As a special case, it is shown that the conventional error exponent both at individual sensors, and at the FC is zero. Further, closed-form lower bounds on the EECL are derived under Rayleigh fading and lognormal shadowing. As an example application, it answers the question of whether to use pilot-signal based narrowband sensing, where the signal undergoes Rayleigh fading, or to sense over the entire bandwidth of a wideband signal, where the signal undergoes lognormal shadowing. Theoretical results are validated using Monte Carlo simulations. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, spectrum sensing for cognitive radios is considered in the presence of multiple Primary Users (PU) using frequency-hopping communication over a set of frequency bands. The detection performance of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Average Ratio (FAR) algorithm is obtained in closed-form, for a given FFT size and number of PUs. The effective throughput of the Secondary Users (SU) is formulated as an optimization problem with a constraint on the maximum allowable interference on the primary network. Given the hopping period of the PUs, the sensing duration that maximizes the SU throughput is derived. The results are validated using Monte Carlo simulations. Further, an implementation of the FAR algorithm on the Lyrtech (now, Nutaq) small form factor software defined radio development platform is presented, and the performance recorded through the hardware is observed to corroborate well with that obtained through simulations, allowing for implementation losses. Objectives:To determine if there is a biological mechanism that explains the association between HIV disease progression and increased mortality with low circulating vitamin D levels; specifically, to determine if restoring vitamin D levels induced T-cell functional changes important for antiviral immunity.Design:This was a pilot, open-label, three-arm prospective phase 1 study. Methods:We recruited 28 patients with low plasma vitamin D (<50nmol/l 25-hydroxyvitamin D3), comprising 17 HIV+ patients (11 on HAART, six treatment-naive) and 11 healthy controls, who received a single dose of 200000IU oral cholecalciferol. Advanced T-cell flow cytometry methods measured CD4(+) T-cell function associated with viral control in blood samples at baseline and 1-month after vitamin D supplementation. Results:One month of vitamin D supplementation restored plasma levels to sufficiency (>75nmol/l) in 27 of 28 patients, with no safety issues. The most striking change was in HIV+ HAART+ patients, where increased frequencies of antigen-specific T cells expressing macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1 - an important anti-HIV blocking chemokine - were observed, with a concomitant increase in plasma MIP-1, both of which correlated significantly with vitamin D levels. In addition, plasma cathelicidin - a vitamin D response gene with broad antimicrobial activity - was enhanced. Conclusion:Vitamin D supplementation modulates disease-relevant T-cell functions in HIV-infected patients, and may represent a useful adjunct to HAART therapy. Unlike conventional polymeric drug delivery systems, where drugs are entrapped in polymers, this study focuses on the incorporation of the drug into the polymer backbone to achieve higher loading and sustained release. Crosslinked, biodegradable, xylitol based polyesters have been synthesized in this study. The bioactive drug moiety, p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), was incorporated in xylitol based polyesters to impart its anti-mycobacterial activity. To understand the influence of the monomer chemistry on the incorporation of PAS and its subsequent release from the polymer, different diacids have been used. Controlled release profiles of the drug from these polyesters were studied under normal physiological conditions. The degradation of the polyesters varied from 48% to 76% and the release of PAS ranged from 54% to 65% of its initial loading in 7 days. A new model was developed to explain the release kinetics of PAS from the polymer that accounted for the polymer degradation and drug concentration. The thermal, mechanical, drug release and cytocompatibility properties of the polymers indicate their suitability in biomedical applications. The released products from these polymers were observed to be pharmacologically active against Mycobacteria. The high drug loading and sustained release also ensured enhanced efficacy. These polymers form biocompatible, biodegradable polyesters where the sustained release of PAS may be tailored for potential treatment of mycobacterial infections. Statement of significance In the present work, we report on novel polyesters with p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) incorporated in the polymer backbone. The current work aims to achieve controlled release of PAS and ensures the delivered PAS is stable and pharmacologically active. The novelty of this work primarily involves the synthetic chemistry of polymerization and detailed analysis and efficacy of active PAS delivery. A new kinetic model has been developed to explain the PAS release profiles. These polymers are biodegradable, cytocompatible and anti-mycobacterial in nature. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. We report the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties of polymeric graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and a methodology for the determination of quantum efficiency along with the activation energy. The PL is shown to originate from three different pathways of transitions: sigma*-LP, pi*-LP, and pi*-pi, respectively. The overall activation energy is found to be similar to 73.58 meV which is much lower than the exciton binding energy reported theoretically but ideal for highly sensitive wide-range temperature sensing. The quantum yield derived from the PL data is 23.3%, whereas the absolute quantum yield is 5.3%. We propose that the temperature-dependent PL can be exploited for the evaluation of the temperature dependency of quantum yield as well as for temperature sensing. Our analysis further indicates that g-C3N4 is well-suited for wide-range temperature sensing.
