A novel solid solution in the system Bi-W-Cu-O has been synthesized and its structural and dielectric properties studied. The solid solution Bi2O3-(1-x)WO3-xCuO exists up to x = 0.7; the solid solutions up to x = 0.65 are orthorhombic but stabilize in tetragonal structure in a narrow range around x = 0.7. The solid solutions are non-centrosymmetric and exhibit ferroelectric behaviour similar to their parent phase Bi2WO6. The Curie point of the solid solution is found to decrease with increase in x.

New composition gradient solid electrolytes have been designed for application in high temperature solid-state galvanic sensors and in thermodynamic measurements. The functionally gradient electrolyte consists of a solid solution between two or more ionic conductors with a common ion and gradual variation in composition of the other ionic species. Unequal rates of migration of the ions, caused by the presence of the concentration gradient, may result in the development of space charge, manifesting as diffusion potential. Presented is a theoretical analysis of the EMF of cells incorporating gradient solid electrolytes. An analytical expression is derived for diffusion potential, using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, for different types of concentration gradients and boundary conditions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. The diffusion potential of an isothermal cell incorporating these gradient electrolytes becomes negligible if there is only one mobile ion and the transport numbers of the relatively immobile polyionic species and electrons approach zero. The analysis of the EMF of a nonisothermal cell incorporating a composition gradient solid electrolyte indicates that the cell EMF can be expressed in terms of the thermodynamic parameters at the electrodes and the Seebeck coefficient of the gradient electrolyte under standard conditions when the transport number of one of the ions approaches unity.

The isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system NiO-MgO-SiO2 at 1373 K is established, The tie lines between (NiXMg1-X)O solid solution with rock salt structure and orthosilicate solid solution (NiYMg1-Y)Si0.5O2 and between orthosilicate and metasilicate (NiZMg1-Z)SiO3 crystalline solutions are determined using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and lattice parameter measurement on equilibrated samples, Although the monoxides and orthosilicates of Ni and Mg form a continuous range of solid solutions, the metasilicate phase exists only for 0 < Z < 0.096, The activity of NiO in the rock salt solid solution is determined as a function of composition and temperature in the range of 1023 to 1377 K using a solid state galvanic cell, The Gibbs energy of mixing of the monoxide solid solution can be expressed by a pseudo-subregular solution model: Delta G(ex) = X(1 - X)[(-2430 + 0.925T)X + (-5390 + 1.758T)(1 - X)] J/mol, The thermodynamic data for the rock salt phase are combined with information on interphase partitioning of Ni and Mg to generate the mixing properties for the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions, The regular solution model describes the orthosilicate and the metasilicate solid solutions at 1373 K within experimental uncertainties, The regular solution parameter Delta G(ex)/Y(1 - Y) is -820 (+/-70) J/mol for the orthosilicate solid solution, The corresponding value for the metasilicate solid solution is -220 (+/-150) J/mol, The derived activities for the orthosilicate solid solution are discussed in relation to the intracrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between M1 and M2 sites. The tie line information, in conjunction with the activity data for orthosilicate and metasilicate solid solutions, is used to calculate the Gibbs energy changes for the intercrystalline ion exchange reactions, Combining this with the known data for NiSi0.5O2, Gibbs energies of formation of MgSi0.5O2, MgSiO3, and metastable NiSiO3 are calculated, The Gibbs energy of formation of NiSiO3, from its component oxides, is equal to 7.67 (+/-0.6) kJ/mol at 1373 K.

Abstract: Activities in the spinel solid solution FexMg1-xAl2O4 saturated with alpha-Al2O3 have been measured for the compositional range 0 < X < 1 between 1100 and 1350 K using a bielectrolyte solid-state galvanic cell, which may be represented as Pt, Fe + FexMg1-xAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3//(Y2O3)ThO2/ (CaO)ZrO2//Fe + FeAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3, Pt Activities of ferrous and magnesium aluminates exhibit small negative deviations from Raoult's law. The excess free energy of mixing of the solid solution is a symmetric function of composition and is independent of temperature: Delta G(E) = -1990 X(1 - X J/mol. Theoretical analysis of cation distribution in spinel solid solution also suggests mild negative deviations from ideality. The lattice parameter varies linearly with composition in samples quenched from 1300 K. Phase relations in the FeO-MgO-Al2O3 system at 1300 K are deduced from the results of this study and auxiliary thermodynamic data from the literature. The calculation demonstrates the influence of intracrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between nonequivalent crystallographic sites in the spinel structure on intercrystalline ion exchange equilibrium between the monoxide and spinel solid solutions (tie-lines). The composition dependence of oxygen partial pressure at 1300 K is evaluated for three-phase equilibria involving the solid solutions Fe + FexMg1-xAl2O4 + alpha-Al2O3 and Fe + FeyMg1-yO + FexMg1-xAl2O4. Dependence of X, denoting the composition of the spinel solid solution, on parameter Y, characterizing the composition of the monoxide solid solution with rock salt structure, in phase fields involving the two solid solutions is elucidated. The tie-lines are slightly skewed toward the MgAl2O4 corner.

Mo3O5(OH)(2)(AsO4)(2) was prepared at 100 degrees C from an aqueous solution of MoO3 containing arsenic and nitric acids. It crystallises in the monoclinic system, a = 13.024(1)Angstrom, b = 7.2974 (2) Angstrom, c = 13.281(1) Angstrom, beta = 121.124(8)degrees, Z = 4, space group C2/c. The structure was determined by Rietveld refinement from X-ray powder diffraction data. The three-dimensional structure is built up from MoO6 and MoO5OH octahedra and AsO4 tetrahedra sharing corners. The octahedra share two opposite vertices forming zigzag chains that run parallel to [10(1) over bar]. Each AsO4 tetrahedron is connected to four octahedra, two of which belong to the same chain, thus linking three chains. The resulting covalent framework is similar to that of beta VOPO4 in which one tetrahedral P site for every three is empty. The two protons are likely to be bonded to two (out of four) unshared oxygen atoms surrounding this empty site. All the Mo atoms are strongly off-centred in the octahedra; and the off-centring is disordered. The disorder is discussed in terms of Mo shifts perturbed by a disordered hydrogen bonding scheme.

Non-exponential electron transfer kinetics in complex systems are often analyzed in terms of a quenched, static disorder model. In this work we present an alternative analysis in terms of a simple dynamic disorder model where the solvent is characterized by highly non-exponential dynamics. We consider both low and high barrier reactions. For the former, the main result is a simple analytical expression for the survival probability of the reactant. In this case, electron transfer, in the long time, is controlled by the solvent polarization relaxation-in agreement with the analyses of Rips and Jortner and of Nadler and Marcus. The short time dynamics is also non-exponential, but for different reasons. The high barrier reactions, on the other hand, show an interesting dynamic dependence on the electronic coupling element, V-el.

Several vanadium, tungsten, and molybdenum oxide bronzes have been prepared using microwave irradiation. Metal oxides and alkali metal iodides were used as starting materials, Intermittent grinding and inert atmosphere were found to be necessary for the synthesis of most of the bronzes, The reaction temperatures are remarkably lower than those employed for conventional synthetic techniques and the microwave assisted reactions proceed at extremely fast rates. The microwave synthesized bronzes consist of particles having long, rectangular rod-like morphology. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

In the absence of a reliable method for a priori prediction of structure and properties of inorganic solid materials, an experimental approach involving a systematic study of composition, structure and properties combined with chemical intuition based on previous experience is likely to be a viable alternative to the problem of rational design of inorganic materials. The approach is illustrated by taking perovskite lithium-ion conductors as an example.

Results on the performance of a 25 cm(2) liquid-feed solid-polymer-electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell (SPE-DMFC), operating under near-ambient conditions, are reported. The SPE-DMFC can yield a maximum power density of c. 200 mW cm(-2) at 90 C while operating with 1 M aqueous methanol and oxygen under ambient pressure. While operating the SPE-DMFC under similar conditions with air, a maximum power density of ca. 100 mW cm(-2) is achieved. Analysis of the electrode reaction kinetics parameters on the methanol electrode suggests that the reaction mechanism for methanol oxidation remains invariant with temperature. Durability data on the SPE-DMFC at an operational current density of 100 mA cm(-2) have also been obtained.

Ceria-supported Au catalyst has been synthesized by the solution combustion method for the first time and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Au is dispersed as Au as well as Au3+ states on CeO2 surface of 20-30 nm crystallites. On heating the as-prepared 1% Au/CeO2 in air, the concentration of Au3- ions on CeO2 increases at the expense of Au. Catalytic activities for CO and hydrocarbon oxidation and NO reduction over the as-prepared and the heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 have been carried out using a temperature-programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. The results are compared with nano-sized Au metal particles dispersed on alpha-Al2O3 substrate prepared by the same method. All the reactions over heat-treated Au/CeO2 occur at lower temperature in comparison with the as-prepared Au/CeO2 and Au/Al2O3. The rate of NO + CO reaction over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 are 28.3 and 54.0 mumol g(-1) s(-1) at 250 and 300 degreesC respeceively. Activation energy (E,) values are 106 and 90 kJ mol(-1) for CO + O-2 reaction respectively over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 respectively.

The utility of tetrathiomolybdate in a variety of organic transformations is presented in this account. The sulfur transfer ability of tetrathiomolybdate is exploited in the synthesis of organic disulfides under mild reaction conditions. The induced internal redox reactions associated with tetrathiomolybdate have been thoroughly exploited in developing various methodologies, which include the reduction of organic azides, synthesis of diselenides, cyclic imines, thioamides, and thiolactams. In addition, novel deprotection strategies using tetrathiomolybdate have been developed to cleave the propargyl and propargyloxy carbonyl (POC) protecting groups. Tetrathiomolybdate mediated tandem sulfur transfer-reduction-Michael reactions have been applied to the synthesis of sulfur containing bicyclic systems. Furthermore, the reactions in the solid state and the reactions in water medium assisted by tetrathiomolybdate have greatly simplified the synthesis of organic disulfides.

The crystal structure, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity of strontium-doped neodymium ferrite (Nd1-xSrxFeO3-delta where 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.4) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeO3-type orthorhombic perovskite structure. The lattice parameters were determined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The orthorhombic distortion decreases with increasing Sr substitution. The pseudocubic lattice parameter shows a minimum at x=0.3. The thermal expansion curves for x=0.2-0.4 displayed rapid increase in slope at higher temperatures. The electrical conductivity increased with Sr content and temperature. The calculated activation energies for electrical conduction decreased with increasing x. The electrical conductivity can be described by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The charge compensation for divalent ion on the A-site is provided by the formation of Fe4+ ions on the B site and vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The results indicate two defect domains: for low values of x, the predominant defect is Fe4+ ions, whereas for higher values of x, oxygen vacancies dominate. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A new diazotizing reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of nitrite is described. The method is based on diazotization-coupling reaction between dapsone and phloroglucinol in hydrochloric acid medium. The reactions were conducted at room temperature, the molor absorptivity at 425 nm is 4.28 x 10(4) 1 Mol, (1)cm(-1) and was stable for 50 h. Beer's law was obeyed in the nitrite range of 0.008 - 1.0 mug ml(-1). Tolerance limits were tested for 33 species. The method has been found to be applicable for the determination of nitrite in natural and wastewater.

We present a comparative study of the spin states and electronic properties of La1-xSrxCoO3 and La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 using X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy at both the O-K and Co-L-2.3 thresholds. In the La2-xSrxLi0.5Co0.5O4 system the CoO6 octahedra are isolated, the holes induced by Sr doping are trapped in the isolated Co(IV)O-6 octahedra, and a low-spin state is found for the Co ions, which does not change upon Sr doping. In the La1-xSrxCoO3 system, the interconnected CoO6 octahedra, with a 180degrees Co-O-Co bond angle, give rise to a transition from low-spin to intermediate-spin state with a ferromagnetic alignment of the Co spins. The double-exchange, ferromagnetic coupling between Co ions mediated by the 180degrees bond angle is responsible for suppressing the low spin-state. We find that the branching ratio of spectral intensities at the L-2 and L-3 thresholds in the Co-L-2.3 X-ray absorption spectra is sensitive to the spin state of the Co ions allowing its direct spectroscopic determination. Pd/CeO2 (1 at. %) prepared by the solution-combustion method shows a higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation and NO reduction than Pd metal, PdO, and Pd dispersed over CeO2 by the conventional method. To understand the higher catalytic properties, the structure of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 catalyst material has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The diffraction lines corresponding to Pd or PdO are not observed in the high-resolution XRD pattern of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2. The structure of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 could be refined for the composition of Ce0.99Pd0.01O1.90 in the fluorite structure with 5% oxide ion vacancy. Pd(3d) peaks in the XPS in I at. % Pd/CeO2 are shifted by 3 eV indicating that Pd is in a highly ionic +2 state. EXAFS studies show the average coordination number of 3 around Pd2+ ion in the first shell of 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 at a distance of 2.02 Angstrom, instead of 4 as in PdO. The second shell at 2.72 Angstrom is due to Pd-Pd correlation which is larger than 2.69 Angstrom in PdO. The third shell at 3.31 Angstrom having 7 coordination is absent either in Pd metal or PdO, which can be attributed to -Pd2+-Ce4+- correlation. Thus, 1 at. % Pd/CeO2 forms the Ce1-xPdxO2-delta type of solid solution having -Pd2+-O-2-Ce4+- kinds of linkages.
