Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based molecular semiconductors have emerged as promising materials for high performance active layers in organic solar cells. It is imperative to comprehend the origin of such a property by investigating the fundamental structure property correlation. In this report we have investigated the role of the donor group in DPP based donor-acceptor- donor (D-A-D) structure to govern the solid state, photophysical and electrochemical properties. We have prepared three derivatives of DPP with varying strengths of the donor groups, such as phenyl (PDPP-Hex), thiophene (TDPP-Hex) and selenophene (SeDPP-Hex). The influence of the donor units on the solid state packing was studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysical, electrochemical and density functional theory ( DFT) results were combined to elucidate the structural and electronic properties of three DPP derivatives. We found that these DPP derivatives crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c and show herringbone packing in the crystal lattice. The derivatives exhibit weak p-p stacking interactions as two neighboring molecules slip away from each other with varied torsional angles at the donor units. The high torsional angle of 32 degrees ( PDPP-Hex) between the phenyl and lactam ring results in weak intramolecular interactions between the donor and acceptor, while TDPP-Hex and SeDPP-Hex show lower torsional angles of 9 degrees and 12 degrees with a strong overlap between the donor and acceptor units. The photophysical properties reveal that PDPP-Hex exhibits a high Stokes shift of 0.32 eV and SeDPP- Hex shows a high molar absorption co-efficient of 33 600 L mol -1 1 cm -1 1 with a low band gap of similar to 2.2 eV. The electrochemical studies of SeDPP- Hex indicate the pronounced effect of selenium in stabilizing the LUMO energy levels and this further emphasizes the importance of chalcogens in developing new n-type organic semiconductors for optoelectronic devices.

Flower-like hierarchical architectures of layered SnS2 have been synthesized ionothermally for the first time, using a water soluble EMIM]BF4 ionic liquid (IL) as the solvent medium. At lower reaction temperatures, the hierarchical structures are formed of few-layered polycrystalline 2D nanosheet-petals composed of randomly oriented nanoparticles of SnS2. The supramolecular networks of the IL serve as templates on which the nanoparticles of SnS2 are glued together by combined effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, hydrophobic and imidazolium stacking interactions of the IL, giving rise to polycrystalline 2D nanosheet-petals. At higher reaction temperatures, single crystalline plate-like nanosheets with well-defined crystallographic facets are obtained due to rapid inter-particle diffusion across the IL. Efficient surface charge screening by the IL favors the aggregation of individual nanosheets to form hierarchical flower-like architectures of SnS2. The mechanistic aspects of the ionothermal bottom-up hierarchical assembly of SnS2 nanosheets are discussed in detail. Li-ion storage properties of the pristine SnS2 samples are examined and the electrochemical performance of the sample synthesized at higher temperatures is found to be comparable to that reported for pristine SnS2 samples in the literature.

The formation and growth of continental crust in the Archean have been evaluated through models of subduction-accretion and mantle plume. The Nilgiri Block in southern India exposes exhumed Neoarchean lower crust, uplifted to heights of 2500 m above sea level along the north western margin of the Peninsula. Major lithologies in this block include charnockite with or without garnet, anorthosite-gabbro suite, pyroxenite, amphibolite and hornblende-biotite gneiss (TTG). All these rock types are closely associated as an arc magmatic suite, with diffuse boundaries and coeval nature. The charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) show SiO2 content varying from 64 to 73 wt.%. The hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) are high-Al type with Al2O3 >15 wt.% whereas the charnockites show Al2O3 <15 wt.%. The composition of charnockite is mainly magnesian and calcic to calc-alkaline. The mafic-ultramafic rocks show composition close to that of tholeiitic series. The low values of K(2)o (<3 wt.%), (K/Rb)/K2O (<500), Zr/Ti, and trace element ratios like (La/Yb)n/(Sr/Y), (Y/Nb), (Y + Nb)/Rb, (Y+Ta)/Rb, Yb/Ta indicate a volcanic arc signature for these rocks. The geochemical signature is consistent with arc magmatic rocks generated through oceanic plate subduction. The primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns of these rocks display enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and comparable high field strength elements (HFSE) in charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) consistent with subduction-related origin. Primitive mantle normalized REE pattern displays an enrichment in LREE in the chamockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) as compared to a flat pattern for the mafic rocks. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of zircons of all the rock types reveal cores with high HREE formed at ca. 2700 Ma and rims with low HREE formed at 2500-2450 Ma. Log-transformed La/Th-Nb/Th-Sm/Th-Yb/Th discrimination diagram for the mafic and ultramafic rocks from Nilgiri displays a transition from mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) to island arc basalt (IAB) suggesting a MORB source. The U-Pb zircon data from the charnockites, mafic granulites and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) presented in our study show that the magma generation during subduction and accretion events in this block occurred at 2700-2500 Ma. Together with the recent report on Neoarchean supra-subduction zone ophiolite suite at its southern margin, the Nilgiri Block provides one of the best examples for continental growth through vertical stacking and lateral accretion in a subduction environment during the Neoarchean. Vacancy, void incorporation and Si-H-x configuration in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films was studied. Films were grown by Direct Current (DC), pulsed DC and Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis has been carried out on the films and found that, the a-Si: H films grown by DC magnetron sputtering are of good quality compared to pulsed DC and RF deposited films. The effect of Substrate temperature (T-S) on the total hydrogen concentration (C-H), configuration of hydrogen bonding, density (decided by the vacancy and void incorporation) and the microstructure factor (R*) was studied. T-S is found to be an active parameter in affecting the above said properties of the films. The films contain both vacancies and voids. At low hydrogen dilutions the films are vacancy dominated and at high hydrogen dilutions they are void dominated. It is found that T-S favors monohydride (Si-H) bonding at the cost of dihydride (Si-H-2) bonding. This dividing line is at C-H=14 at.% H for DC sputter deposited films. The microstructure structure factor R* is found to be zero for as deposited DC films at T-S=773K. The threshold C-H for void dominated region is found to be C-H=23 at.% H for RF, C-H=18 at.% H for PDC and C-H similar to 14 at.%H for DC sputter deposited films.

We report on the systematic comparative study of highly c-axis oriented and crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films deposited on four different flexible substrates for vibration sensing application. The flexible substrates employed for present experimental study were namely a metal alloy (Phynox), metal (aluminum), polyimide (Kapton), and polyester (Mylar). ZnO thin films were deposited by an RF reactive magnetron sputtering technique. ZnO thin films of similar thicknesses of 700 +/- 30 nm were deposited on four different flexible substrates to have proper comparative studies. The crystallinity, surface morphology, chemical composition, and roughness of ZnO thin films were evaluated by respective material characterization techniques. The transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value for assessing the piezoelectric property of ZnO thin films on different flexible substrates was measured by a four-point bending method. ZnO thin films deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed relatively better material characterization results and a higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value as compared to ZnO films on metal and polymer substrates. In order to experimentally verify the above observations, vibration sensing studies were performed. As expected, the ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed better vibration sensing performance. It has generated the highest peak to peak output voltage amplitude of 256 mV as compared to that of aluminum (224 mV), Kapton (144 mV), and Mylar (46 mV). Therefore, metal alloy flexible substrate proves to be a more suitable, advantageous, and versatile choice for integrating ZnO thin films as compared to metal and polymer flexible substrates for vibration sensing applications. The present experimental study is extremely important and helpful for the selection of a suitable flexible substrate for various applications in the field of sensor and actuator technology.

Three new NPI-BODIPY dyads 1-3 (NPI = 1,8-naphthalimide, BODIPY = boron-dipyrromethene) were synthesized, characterized, and studied. The NPI and BODIPY moieties in these dyads are electronically separated by oxoaryl bridges, and the compounds only differ structurally with respect to methyl substituents on the BODIPY fluorophore. The NPI and BODIPY moieties retain their optical features in molecular dyads 1-3. Dyads 1-3 show dual emission in solution originating from the two separate fluorescent units. The variations of the dual emission in these compounds are controlled by the structural flexibilities of the systems. Dyads 13, depending on their molecular flexibilities, show considerably different spectral shapes and dissimilar intensity ratios of the two emission bands. The dyads also show significant aggregation-induced emission switching (AIES) on formation of nano-aggregates in THF/H2O with changes in emission color from green to red. Whereas the flexible and aggregation-prone compound 1 shows AIES, rigid systems with less favorable intermolecular interactions (i.e., 2 and 3) show aggregation-induced quenching of emission. Correlations of the emission intensity and structural flexibility were found to be reversed in solution and aggregated states. Photophysical and structural investigations suggested that intermolecular interactions (e. g., pi-pi stacking) play a major role in controlling the emission of these compounds in the aggregated state.

The subiculum is a structure that forms a bridge between the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex (EC), and plays a major role in the memory consolidation process. Here, we demonstrate spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) at the proximal excitatory inputs on the subicular pyramidal neurons of juvenile rat. Causal (positive) pairing of a single EPSP with a single back-propagating action potential (bAP) after a time interval of 10 ms (+10 ms) failed to induce plasticity. However, increasing the number of bAPs in a burst to three, at two different frequencies of 50 Hz (bAP burst) and 150 Hz, induced long-term depression (LTD) after a time interval of +10 ms in both the regular-firing (RF), and the weak burst firing (WBF) neurons. The LTD amplitude decreased with increasing time interval between the EPSP and the bAP burst. Reversing the order of the pairing of the EPSP and the bAP burst induced LTP at a time interval of -10 ms. This finding is in contrast with reports at other synapses, wherein prebefore postsynaptic (causal) pairing induced LTP and vice versa. Our results reaffirm the earlier observations that the relative timing of the pre- and postsynaptic activities can lead to multiple types of plasticity profiles. The induction of timing-dependent LTD (t-LTD) was dependent on postsynaptic calcium change via NMDA receptors in the WBF neurons, while it was independent of postsynaptic calcium change, but required active L-type calcium channels in the RF neurons. Thus the mechanism of synaptic plasticity may vary within a hippocampal subfield depending on the postsynaptic neuron involved. This study also reports a novel mechanism of LTD induction, where L-type calcium channels are involved in a presynaptically induced synaptic plasticity. The findings may have strong implications in the memory consolidation process owing to the central role of the subiculum and LTD in this process.

The present study investigates the critical role of deformation twinning and Bs-type shear bands in the evolution of deformation texture in a low stacking fault energy Ni-60Co alloy up to very large rolling strain (epsilon(t) approximate to 4). The alloy develops a strong brass-type rolling texture, and its formation is initiated at the early stages of deformation. Extensive twinning is observed at the intermediate stages of deformation, which causes significant texture reorientation towards alpha-fiber. A pseudo-in-situ electron back-scattered diffraction technique adopted to capture orientation changes within individual grains during the early stages suggests that twinning should be subsequently aided by crystallographic slip to attain alpha-fiber (< 1 1 0 >parallel to ND) orientations. Beyond 40% reduction, deformation is dominated by Bs-type shear bands, and the banding coincides with the evolution of < 1 1 1 >parallel to ND components. The volume fraction of shear bands is significant at higher strains, and crystallites within the bands preferentially show < 1 1 0 >parallel to ND components. The absence of the Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > component in the initial texture, and subsequently during rolling, indicates that, for the evolution of a brass-type texture, the presence of the Cu component is not a necessary condition. The final rolling texture is a synergistic effect of deformation twinning and shear banding. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An investigation of a series of seven angular ``V'' shaped NPIs (1-7) is presented. The effect of substitution of these structurally similar NPIs on their photophysical properties in the solution-state and the solid-state is presented and discussed in light of experimental and computational findings. Compounds 1-7 show negligible to intensely strong emission yields in their solid-state depending on the nature of substituents appended to the oxoaryl moiety. The solution and solid-state properties of the compounds can be directly correlated with their structural rigidity, nature of substituents and intermolecular interactions. The versatile solid-state structures of the NPI siblings are deeply affected by the pendant substituents. All of the NPIs (1-7) show antiparallel dimeric pi-pi stacking interactions in their solid-state which can further extend in a parallel, alternate, orthogonal or lateral fashion depending on the steric and electronic nature of the C-4' substituents. Structural investigations including Hirshfeld surface analysis methods reveal that where strongly interacting systems show weak to moderate emission in their condensed states, weakly interacting systems show strong emission yields under the same conditions. The nature of packing and extended structures also affects the emission colors of the NPIs in their solid-states. Furthermore, DFT computational studies were utilized to understand the molecular and cumulative electronic behaviors of the NPIs. The comprehensive studies provide insight into the condensed-state luminescence of aggregationprone small molecules like NPIs and help to correlate the structure-property relationships.

Two-component super-hydrogelation triggered by the acid-base interaction of a L-histidine appended pyrenyl derivative (PyHis) and phthalic acid (PA) was reported. The use of isomeric isophthalic or terephthalic acid or other comparable acids in place of PA does not lead to salt formation and therefore hydrogelation is not observed. Excimer formation of the pyrenyl unit has not been detected although the PyHis : PA = 1: 1 system undergoes extensive self-assembly in aqueous solution. The synergistic effect of intermolecular H-bonding forces, pi-pi stacking, electrostatic interactions, etc. is found to be responsible for robust hydrogel formation. Development of chiral supramotecular assemblies has been verified through circular dichroism spectroscopy. Morphological investigations involving the PyHis : PA = 1: 1 system show vesicular nano-structures with a definite bilayer width at relatively low concentrations. The latter fuses to construct coiled-coil left-handed helical fibers upon increase in the concentrations of the gelators. The intertwining of the resultant helical fibers eventually results in hydrogel formation. The probable bilayer packing in the self-assembled structures has been probed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and lanthanide sensitization, which suggests that the polar imidazolium hydrogen phthalate unit of the gelator forms the head group and faces the hydrophilic water environment while the hydrophobic pyrenyl units sit inside the hydrophobic core of the bilayer. The hydrogel exhibits multi-stimuli responsiveness including thixotropic behavior. In addition, shape-persistent as well as rapid self-healing behaviour of the hydrogel was established. Furthermore load-bearing characteristics of the hydrogel have also been demonstrated.

A comprehensive analysis of the crystal packing and the energetic features of a series of four biologically active molecules belonging to the family of substituted 4-(benzylideneamino)-3-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-(4 H)-thione derivatives have been performed based on the molecular conformation and the supramolecular packing. This involves the formation of a short centrosymmetric R-2(2)(8) NH...S supramolecular synthon in the solid state, including the presence of CH...S, CH...O, CH...N, CH...F, CH...Cl, CF...FC, CCl...ClC, and CH...pi intermolecular interactions along with pp stacking to evaluate the role of noncovalent interactions in the crystal. The presence of such synthons has a substantial contribution toward the interaction energy (-18 to -20 kcal/mol) as obtained from the PIXEL calculation, wherein the Coulombic and polarization contribution are more significant than the dispersion contribution. The geometrical characteristics of such synthons favor short distance, and the population of related molecules having these geometries is rare as has been obtained from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Furthermore, their interaction energies have been compared with those present in our molecules in the solid state. The topological characteristics of the NH...S supramolecular synthon, in addition to related weak interactions, CH...N, CH...Cl, CF...FC, and CCl...ClC, have been estimated using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). In addition, an analysis of the Hirshfeld surface and associated fingerprint plots of these four molecules also have provided a platform for the evaluation of the contribution of different atom...atom contacts, which contribute toward the packing of the molecules in solids.

Amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) is well-known material in the global semiconductor industry. The quality of the a-Si:H films is generally decided by silicon and hydrogen bonding configuration (Si-H-x, x=1,2) and hydrogen concentration (C-H). These quality aspects are correlated with the plasma parameters like ion density (N-i) and electron temperature (T-e) of DC, Pulsed DC (PDC) and RF plasmas during the sputter-deposition of a-Si:H thin films. It was found that the N-i and T-e play a major role in deciding Si-H-x bonding configuration and the C-H value in a-Si:H films. We observed a trend in the variation of Si-H and Si-H-2 bonding configurations, and C-H in the films deposited by DC, Pulsed DC and RF reactive sputtering techniques. Ion density and electron energy are higher in RF plasma followed by PDC and DC plasma. Electrons with two different energies were observed in all the plasmas. At a particular hydrogen partial pressure, RF deposited films have higher C-H followed by PDC and then DC deposited films. The maximum energy that can be acquired by the ions was found to be higher in RF plasma. Floating potential (V-f) is more negative in DC plasma, whereas, plasma potential (V-p) is found to be more positive in RF plasma. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bi1-xCaxMnO3 (BCMO) thin films with x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 are successfully deposited on the n-type Si (100) substrate at two different temperatures of 400 degrees C and 800 degrees C using RF magnetron sputtering. The stoichiometry of the films and oxidation state of the elements have been described by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Dielectric measurement depicts the insulating property of BCMO films. Magnetic and ferroelectric studies confirm the significant enhancement in spin orientation as well as electric polarization at room temperature due to incorporation of Ca2+ ions into BiMnO3 films. The BCMO (x = 0.2) film grown at 400 degrees C shows better magnetization (M-sat) and polarization (P-s) with the measured values of 869 emu / cc and 6.6 mu(C)/cm(2) respectively than the values of the other prepared films. Thus the realization of room temperature ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Ca2+ ions substituted BMO films makes potentially interesting for spintronic device applications. First-principles density functional theory has been used to evaluate the shear and cleavage strength in terms of Griffith work and generalized stacking fault energy (GSF) of (001) plane for gamma, gamma' and gamma-gamma' system as a function of distance from the gamma/gamma' interface. Calculation of Griffith work suggests higher cleavage energy for bulk gamma as compared to gamma' while the GSF calculation suggests higher shear strength for bulk gamma' as compared to gamma. It has been found that the shear strength of the cubic plane of the gamma/gamma' interface is marginally lower than those of bulk gamma and gamma' phases. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Package-board co-design plays a crucial role in determining the performance of high-speed systems. Although there exist several commercial solutions for electromagnetic analysis and verification, lack of Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools for SI aware design and synthesis lead to longer design cycles and non-optimal package-board interconnect geometries. In this work, the functional similarities between package-board design and radio-frequency (RF) imaging are explored. Consequently, qualitative methods common to the imaging community, like Tikhonov Regularization (TR) and Landweber method are applied to solve multi-objective, multi-variable package design problems. In addition, a new hierarchical iterative piecewise linear algorithm is developed as a wrapper over LBP for an efficient solution in the design space.
