There is a drop in the flutter boundary of an aeroelastic system placed in a transonic flow due to compressibility effects and is known as the transonic dip. Viscous effects can shift the lo-cation of the shock and depending on the shock strength the boundary layer may separate leading to changes in the flutter speed. An unsteady Euler flow solver coupled with the structural dynamic equations is used to understand the effect of shock on the transonic dip. The effect of various system parameters such as mass ratio, location of the center of mass, position of the elastic axis, ratio of uncoupled natural frequencies in heave and pitch are also studied. Steady turbulent flow results are presented to demonstrate the effect of viscosity on the location and strength of the shock.

A droplet introduced in an external convective flow field exhibits significant multimodal shape oscillations depending upon the intensity of the aerodynamic forcing. In this paper, a theoretical model describing the temporal evolution of normal modes of the droplet shape is developed. The fluid is assumed to be weakly viscous and Newtonian. The convective flow velocity, which is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, is incorporated in the model through the normal stress condition at the droplet surface and the equation of motion governing the dynamics of each mode is derived. The coupling between the external flow and the droplet is approximated to be a one-way process, i.e., the external flow perturbations effect the droplet shape oscillations and the droplet oscillation itself does not influence the external flow characteristics. The shape oscillations of the droplet with different fluid properties under different unsteady flow fields were simulated. For a pulsatile external flow, the frequency spectra of the normal modes of the droplet revealed a dominant response at the resonant frequency, in addition to the driving frequency and the corresponding harmonics. At driving frequencies sufficiently different from the resonant frequency of the prolate-oblate oscillation mode of the droplet, the oscillations are stable. But at resonance the oscillation amplitude grows in time leading to breakup depending upon the fluid viscosity. A line vortex advecting past the droplet, simulated as an isotropic jump in the far field velocity, leads to the resonant excitation of the droplet shape modes if and only if the time taken by the vortex to cross the droplet is less than the resonant period of the P-2 mode of the droplet. A train of two vortices interacting with the droplet is also analysed. It shows clearly that the time instant of introduction of the second vortex with respect to the droplet shape oscillation cycle is crucial in determining the amplitude of oscillation. A new evaluation of the elastic thickness (Te) structure of the Indian Shield, derived from isotropic fan wavelet methodology, documents spatial variations of lithospheric deformation in different tectonic provinces correlated with episodic tectono-thermal events. The Te variations corroborated by shear velocity, crustal thickness, and seismogenic thickness reveal the heterogeneous rheology of the Indian lithosphere. The thinned, attenuated lithosphere beneath Peninsular India is considered to be the reason for its mechanically weak strength (<30 km), where a decoupled crust-mantle rheology under different surface/subsurface loading structures may explain the prominent low Te patterns. The arcuate Te structure of the Western Dharwar province and a NNE-trending band of low Te anomaly in the Southern Granulite Terrane are intriguing patterns. The average Te values (40-50 km) of the Central Indian Tectonic Zone, the Bastar Craton, and the northern Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt are suggestive of old, stable, Indian lithosphere, which was not affected by any major tectono-thermal events after cratonic stabilization. We propose that the anomalously high Te (60-85 km) and high S-wave velocity zone to the north of the Narmada-Son Lineament, mainly in NW Himalaya, and the northern Aravalli and Bundelkhand Cratons, suggest that Archean lithosphere characterized by a high velocity mantle keel supports the orogenic topographic loads in/near the Himalaya. The Te map clearly segments the volcanic provinces of the Indian Shield, where the signatures of the Reunion, Marion, and Kerguelen hotspots are indicated by significantly low Te patterns that correlate with plume- and rift-related thermal and mechanical rejuvenation, magmatic underplating, and crustal necking. The correlations between Te variations and the occurrence of seismicity over seismically active zones reveal different causal relationships, which led to the current seismogenic zonation of the Indian Shield. In this paper, we analyse three commonly discussed `flaws' of linearized elasticity theory and attempt to resolve them. The first `flaw' concerns cylindrically orthotropic material models. Since the work of Lekhnitskii (1968), there has been a growing body of work that continues to this day, that shows that infinite stresses arise with the use of a cylindrically orthotropic material model even in the case of linearized elasticity. Besides infinite stresses, interpenetration of matter is also shown to occur. These infinite stresses and interpenetration occur when the ratio of the circumferential Young modulus to the radial Young modulus is less than one. If the ratio is greater than one, then the stresses at the center of a spinning disk are found to be zero (recall that for an isotropic material model, the stresses are maximum at the center). Thus, the stresses go abruptly from a maximum value to a value of zero as the ratio is increased to a value even slightly above one! One of the explanations provided for this extremely anomalous behaviour is the failure of linearized elasticity to satisfy material frame-indifference. However, if this is the true cause, then the anomalous behaviour should also occur with the use of an isotropic material model, where, no such anomalies are observed. We show that the real cause of the problem is elsewhere and also show how these anomalies can be resolved. We also discuss how the formulation of linearized elastodynamics in the case of small deformations superposed on a rigid motion can be given in a succinct manner. Finally, we show how the long-standing problem of devising three compatibility relations instead of six can be resolved.

A new partial integrated guidance and control design approach is proposed in this paper, which combines the benefits of both integrated guidance and control as well as the conventional guidance and control design philosophies. The proposed technique essentially operates in a two-loop structure. In the outer loop, an optimal guidance problem is formulated considering the nonlinear six degrees-of-freedom equation of motion of the interceptor. From this loop, the required pitch and yaw rates are generated by solving a nonlinear suboptimal guidance formulation in a computationally efficient manner while simultaneously assuring roll stabilization. Next, the inner loop tracks these outer loop body rate commands. This manipulation of the six degrees-of-freedom dynamics in both loops preserves the inherent time scale separation property between the translational and rotational dynamics, while retaining the philosophy of integrated guidance and control design as well. Because of this, the tuning process is quite straightforward and nontedious as well. Extensive six degrees-of-freedom simulations studies have been carried out, considering three-dimensional engagement geometry, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new design approach engaging high-speed ballistic targets. A variety of comparison studies have also been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We examine the role of thermal conduction and magnetic fields in cores of galaxy clusters through global simulations of the intracluster medium (ICM). In particular, we study the influence of thermal conduction, both isotropic and anisotropic, on the condensation of multiphase gas in cluster cores. Previous hydrodynamic simulations have shown that cold gas condenses out of the hot ICM in thermal balance only when the ratio of the cooling time (t(cool)) and the free-fall time (t(ff)) is less than approximate to 10. Since thermal conduction is significant in the ICM and it suppresses local cooling at small scales, it is imperative to include thermal conduction in such studies. We find that anisotropic (along local magnetic field lines) thermal conduction does not influence the condensation criterion for a general magnetic geometry, even if thermal conductivity is large. However, with isotropic thermal conduction cold gas condenses only if conduction is suppressed (by a factor less than or similar to 0.3) with respect to the Spitzer value.

In this paper we investigate the local flame surface statistics of constant-pressure turbulent expanding flames. First the statistics of local length ratio is experimentally determined from high-speed planar Mie scattering images of spherically expanding flames, with the length ratio on the measurement plane, at predefined equiangular sectors, defined as the ratio of the actual flame length to the length of a circular-arc of radius equal to the average radius of the flame. Assuming isotropic distribution of such flame segments we then convolute suitable forms of the length-ratio probability distribution functions (pdfs) to arrive at the corresponding area-ratio pdfs. It is found that both the length ratio and area ratio pdfs are near log-normally distributed and shows self-similar behavior with increasing radius. Near log-normality and rather intermittent behavior of the flame-length ratio suggests similarity with dissipation rate quantities which stimulates multifractal analysis. The tonic is a fundamental concept in Indian art music. It is the base pitch, which an artist chooses in order to construct the melodies during a rg(a) rendition, and all accompanying instruments are tuned using the tonic pitch. Consequently, tonic identification is a fundamental task for most computational analyses of Indian art music, such as intonation analysis, melodic motif analysis and rg recognition. In this paper we review existing approaches for tonic identification in Indian art music and evaluate them on six diverse datasets for a thorough comparison and analysis. We study the performance of each method in different contexts such as the presence/absence of additional metadata, the quality of audio data, the duration of audio data, music tradition (Hindustani/Carnatic) and the gender of the singer (male/female). We show that the approaches that combine multi-pitch analysis with machine learning provide the best performance in most cases (90% identification accuracy on average), and are robust across the aforementioned contexts compared to the approaches based on expert knowledge. In addition, we also show that the performance of the latter can be improved when additional metadata is available to further constrain the problem. Finally, we present a detailed error analysis of each method, providing further insights into the advantages and limitations of the methods.

Isochromatic patterns in the vicinity of frictional contacts furnish vital clues for characterizing friction. Though friction effects are evident in a diametrally loaded circular disk, three-point loading provides better results towards highlighting friction. In this paper, a new method of characterizing friction at loading contacts using photoelastic isochromatics patterns is presented. Location of isotropic points (IPs) formed in three-point and four-point loadings of circular disk is used as a main tool to quantify the friction component using theoretical analysis. Bifurcation of isochromatic fringe loops near the distributed loads is explained by the presence of anti-symmetric Hertzian shear traction in addition to Hertzian normal traction. The classical solution by Flamant for point load at the edge of half plane is used to derive stresses in circular disk for all required loading configurations. A semicircualr ring under three-point loading is examined using photoelasticity to understand the isochromatics pattern theoretically by considering normal and shear traction components at loaded regions.

Coupled wavenumbers in infinite fluid-filled isotropic and orthotropic cylindrical shells are considered. Using the Donnell-Mushtari (DM) theory for thin shells, compact and elegant asymptotic expansions for the wavenumbers are found at an intermediate fluid loading for both the coupled rigid-duct modes (''fluid-originated'') and the coupled structural wavenumbers (''structure-originated modes'') over the entire frequency range where DM theory is valid. The coupled rigid-duct expansions are found to be valid for O(1) orthotropy and for all circumferential orders, whereas the coupled structural wavenumber expansions are valid for small orthotropy and for low circumferential orders. These two above results are then used to derive the expansions for a set of multiple complex roots that display a locking behavior at this intermediate fluid-loading. The expansions are matched with the numerical solutions of the coupled dispersion relation and the match is found to be good over most of the frequency range. (C) 2014 Acoustical Society of America.

We present a detailed direct numerical simulation of statistically steady, homogeneous, isotropic, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Our study concentrates on the inverse cascade of the magnetic vector potential. We examine the dependence of the statistical properties of such turbulence on dissipation and friction coefficients. We extend earlier work significantly by calculating fluid and magnetic spectra, probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the velocity, magnetic, vorticity, current, stream-function, and magnetic-vector-potential fields, and their increments. We quantify the deviations of these PDFs from Gaussian ones by computing their flatnesses and hyperflatnesses. We also present PDFs of the Okubo-Weiss parameter, which distinguishes between vortical and extensional flow regions, and its magnetic analog. We show that the hyperflatnesses of PDFs of the increments of the stream function and the magnetic vector potential exhibit significant scale dependence and we examine the implication of this for the multiscaling of structure functions. We compare our results with those of earlier studies.

In this paper, we present the fabrication and characterization of Ti and Au coated hollow silicon microneedles for transdermal drug delivery applications. The hollow silicon microneedles are fabricated using isotropic etching followed by anisotropic etching to obtain a tapered tip. Silicon microneedle of 300 mu m in height, with 130 mu m outer diameter and 110 mu m inner diameter at the tip followed by 80 mu m inner diameter and 160 mu m outer diameter at the base have been fabricated. In order to improve the biocompatibility of microneedles, the fabricated microneedles were coated with Ti (500 nm) by sputtering technique followed by gold coating using electroplating. A breaking force of 225 N was obtained for the fabricated microneedles, which is 10 times higher than the skin resistive force. Hence, fabricated microneedles can easily be inserted inside the skin without breakage. The fluid flow through the microneedles was studied for different inlet pressures. A minimum inlet pressure of 0.66 kPa was required to achieve a flow rate of 50 mu l in 2 s with de-ionized water as a fluid medium. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the merging and splitting of quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with strong dipolar interactions. We observe that if the dipoles have a non-zero component in the plane of the condensate, the dynamics of merging or splitting along two orthogonal directions, parallel and perpendicular to the projection of dipoles on the plane of the condensate, are different. The anisotropic merging and splitting of the condensate is a manifestation of the anisotropy of the roton-like mode in the dipolar system. The difference in dynamics disappears if the dipoles are oriented at right angles to the plane of the condensate as in this case the Bogoliubov dispersion, despite having roton-like features, is isotropic.

Systematic experiments have been carried out by monitoring the in-situ pressure and thickness profiles for three different configurations, viz., flat plate, flat plate with a central circular hole, and an L-section using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. The effect of anisotropy on resin flow has been quantified by considering uni-directional carbon fiber preforms with 0 degrees and 90 degrees orientation to the flow direction for each configuration. A quasi-isotropic 45 degrees/0 degrees/-45 degrees/90 degrees](S) layup has also been included for flat plate case. Additionally, the study has been extended to understand the effect of using high permeability medium for each configuration. Fluid pressure profiles and thickness variation profiles have been obtained using an array of pressure sensors and linear variable differential transformers for each configuration. Experimental data reveal that anisotropy (due to changing fiber orientations), configuration, and gravity significantly change fluid pressure and displacement fields obtained during VARTM.

Cantilevers made out of PECVD grown SiC films are reported here. The cantilevers were realized in two different methods isotropic etch (Dry release) and combination of wet etch and critical point dry release. The dry release process for Silicon isotropic etch results in excellent etch selectivity against SiC, to provide released structures. The optimized wet release process is able to overcome stiction issues to provide excellent SiC cantilevers.
