A hybrid simulation technique for identification and steady state optimization of a tubular reactor used in ammonia synthesis is presented. The parameter identification program finds the catalyst activity factor and certain heat transfer coefficients that minimize the sum of squares of deviation from simulated and actual temperature measurements obtained from an operating plant. The optimization program finds the values of three flows to the reactor to maximize the ammonia yield using the estimated parameter values. Powell's direct method of optimization is used in both cases. The results obtained here are compared with the plant data.

The work reported here is concerned with a detailed thermochemical evaluation of the flaming mode behaviour of a gasifier based stove. Determination of the gas composition over the fuel bed, surface and gas temperatures in the gasification process constitute principal experimental features. A simple atomic balance for the gasification reaction combined with the gas composition from the experiments is used to determine the CH(4) equivalent of higher hydrocarbons and the gasification efficiency (eta g). The components of utilization efficiency, namely, gasification-combustion and heat transfer are explored. Reactive flow computational studies using the measured gas composition over the fuel bed are used to simulate the thermochemical flow field and heat transfer to the vessel; hither-to-ignored vessel size effects in the extraction of heat from the stove are established clearly. The overall flaming mode efficiency of the stove is 50-54%; the convective and radiative components of heat transfer are established to be 45-47 and 5-7% respectively. The efficiency estimates from reacting computational fluid dynamics (RCFD) compare well with experiments. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The numerical solutions are obtained for skin friction, heat transfer to the wall and growth of boundary layer along the flat plate by employing two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations governing the hypersonic flow coupled with species continuity equations. Flow fields have been computed along the flat plate in CO2 atmosphere in the presence of transpiration cooling using air and carbon dioxide.

In this paper, we present a modified k - epsilon model capable of addressing turbulent weld-pool convection in a GMAW process, taking into account the morphology of the phase change interface during a Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. A three-dimensional turbulence mathematical model has been developed to study the heat transfer and fluid flow within the weld pool by considering the combined effect of three driving forces, viz., buoyancy, Lorentz force and surface tension (Marangoni convection). Mass and energy transports by the droplets are considered through the thermal analysis of the electrode. The falling droplet's heat addition to the molten pool is considered to be a volumetric heat source distributed in an imaginary cylindrical cavity ("cavity model") within the weld pool. This nature of heat source distribution takes into account the momentum and the thermal, energy of the falling droplets. The numerically predicted weld pool dimensions both from turbulence and laminar models are then compared with the experimental post-weld results sectioned across the weld axis. The above comparison enables us to analyze the overall effects of turbulent convection on the nature of heat and fluid flow and hence on the weld pool shape/size during the arc welding processes.

Thermal management of distributed electronics similar to data centers is studied using a bi-disperse porous medium (BDPM) approach. The BDPM channel comprises heat generating micro-porous square blocks, separated by macro-pores. Laminar forced convection cooling fluid of Pr = 0.7 saturates both the micro- and macro-pores. Bi-dispersion effect is induced by varying the macro-pore volume fraction phi(E), and by changing the number of porous blocks N-2, both representing re-distribution of the electronics. When 0.2 <= phi(E) <= 0.86, the heat transfer No is enhanced twice (from similar to 550 to similar to 1100) while the pressure drop Delta p* reduces almost eightfold. For phi(E) < 0.5, No reduces quickly to reach a minimum at the mono -disperse porous medium (MDPM) limit (phi(E) -> 0). Compared to N-2 = 1 case, No for BDPM configuration is high when N-2 >> 1, i.e., the micro-porous blocks are many and well distributed. The Nu increase with Re changes from non-linear to linear as N-2 increases from 1 to 81, with corresponding insignificant pumping power increase. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Study of laminar boundary layer in mixed convection from vertical plates is carried out. The surface temperature along the vertical plate is assumed to vary arbitrarily with vertical distance. Perturbation technique is used to solve the governing boundary layer equations. The differentials of the wall temperature are used as perturbation elements, which are functions of vertical distance, to obtain universal functions. The universal functions are valid for any type of vertical wall temperature variation. Heat transfer rates and fluid velocity inside the boundary layer can be expressed and calculated using these universal functions. Heat transfer rates are obtained for the special cases of power-law variation of the wall temperature. The effect of the governing parameter (Gr(y)/Re-y(2)) and the power index of the power-law wall temperature variation on heat transfer rates is studied. For the purpose of validation, the mixed convection results obtained by the present technique pertaining to the special cases of isothermal vertical wall are compared with those obtained by similarity analysis reported in literature, and the agreement is found to be good. Three-dimensional numerical study of natural convection in a vertical channel with flush-mounted discrete heaters on opposite conductive substrate walls is carried out in the present work. Detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer effects on one wall by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall is examined. It is found that heat transfer rates on one wall are increased by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall. The thermal boundary layers on the opposite walls complement each other for enhanced heat transfer. The effects of spacing between the heated walls, spacings between heaters and substrate conductivity on flow and heat transfer are examined. Existence of optimum spacings between the heated walls for maximum heat transfer and mass flow are observed. It is found that the heat transfer and fluid flow do not follow the same optimum spacings. Mass flow rate reaches maximum value at a wall spacing greater than the spacing for maximum heat transfer. This is because the interaction of thermal boundary layers on individual walls ceases at a lower spacing before the velocity boundary layers separate each other. It is found that increased spacings between heaters reduce individual heater temperatures provided the heaters close to exit on both substrates avail sufficient substrate potions on the exit side. Insufficient substrate portions between the exit heaters and the exit cause abnormal local temperature rise in the exit heaters which are the hottest ones among all the heaters. Optimal heater spacings exist for minimum hottest heater temperature rise. Correlations are presented for dimensionless mass flow rate, temperature maximum, and average Nusselt number.

This paper presents an investigation of the fluid flow in the fully developed portion of a rectangular channel (Aspect Ratio of 2) with dimples applied to one wall at channel Reynolds numbers of 20,000, 30,000, and 40,000. The dimples are applied in a staggered-row, racetrack configuration. Results for three different dimple geometries are presented: a large dimple, small dimple, and double dimple. Heat transfer and aerodynamic results from preceding works are presented in Nusselt number and friction factor augmentation plots as determined experimentally. Using particle image velocimetry, the region near the dimple feature is studied in detail in the location of the entrainment and ejection of vortical packets into and out of the dimple; the downstream wake region behind each dimple is also studied to examine the effects of the local flow phenomenon that result in improved heat transfer in the areas of the channel wall not occupied by a feature. The focus of the paper is to examine the secondary flows in these dimpled channels in order to support the previously presented heat transfer trends. The flow visualization is also intended to improve the understanding of the flow disturbances in a dimpled channel; a better understanding of these effects would lead the development of more effective channel cooling designs. This article reports experimental results on supersonic combustion in a new facility. The facility is a combustion-driven shock tunnel, which is cheaper to build than the facilities in which such experiments are carried out conventionally. The observation region is a zone between two parallel flat plates with a 33 degrees wedge attached to the upstream end of the bottom plate. Gaseous hydrogen is injected at an angle of 45 degrees into an oncoming supersonic flow of Mach 2 (approximate) from a port on the bottom plate. The resulting flow field is visualized by a high speed camera in a dark background. Three different test gases, namely nitrogen, air, and oxygen-rich air are used, and the results are compared. A distinct luminosity due to combustion for oxygen-containing test gases is observed. Heat-transfer rates on a probe placed at the downstream end of the observation region and midway between the parallel plates are measured and compared for the three cases. Wall static pressure at 28 mm downstream of the injection port on the bottom plate is also presented.

Laminar natural convection between two coaxial vertical rectangular cylinders is numerically studied in this work. The outer cylinder is connected with vertical rectangular inlet and outlet pipes. The inner cylinder dissipates volumetric heat. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics between the cylinders are analyzed in detail for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer rates on the individual faces of the inner cylinder are reported. The bottom face of the inner cylinder is found to associate with much higher heat rates than those of the other faces. The average Nusselt number on bottom face is more than 2.5 times of the Nusselt number averaged on all the faces. At a given elevation, local Nusselt number on the inner cylinder faces increases towards cylinder edges. The effect of thermal condition of the walls of outer cylinder, inlet and outlet on the natural convection is analyzed. The thermal condition shows strong qualitative and quantitative impact on the fluid flow and heat transfer. The variation of induced flow rate, dimensionless maximum temperature and average Nusselt numbers with Grashof number is studied. Correlations for dimensionless buoyancy-induced mass flow rate and temperature maximum are presented. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Laminar natural convection in a series of thermally interacting cavities is numerically studied. Each cavity consists of a conducting bottom wall with a surface mounted heater. The side walls of the cavities are isothermally cooled. Each cavity thermally interacts with its adjacent cavities through the conducting walls. Flow and heat transfer characteristics are studied in detail for various Rayleigh numbers. The convection characteristics in multiple cavities are compared with those in single independent cavity. The thermal interaction between the cavities results in lower temperatures compared with those in independent cavities. While heat is rejected into the adjacent upper cavity through some portion of the conducting wall, heat is received from the adjacent cavity through the remaining portion of the wall. The influence of substrate conductivity on heat exchange between adjacent cavities are examined. Substrate conductivity shows strong effect on temperature distribution. When cooling at both vertical sides is changed to one side cooling, the heat transfer characteristics are changed drastically and many interesting flow features are observed. Effects of cavity aspect ratio is studied and higher heat transfer rates are observed at higher aspect ratios. Correlations for dimensionless temperature maximum and average Nusselt number are presented in terms of Rayleigh number.

Porous zirconia ceramic monoliths have been extensively used in thermo-structural applications due to their inherent low thermal conductivity in combination with their adaptability to form complicated shapes through advanced ceramic processing techniques. However, extruded cellular honeycomb structures made from these materials have been less explored for thermal management applications. There exist large potential applications due to their unique configurations, resulting in better heat-management mechanisms. Some of the studies carried out on zirconia honeycombs are safeguarded through patents due to its technical importance, or the information is not in the public domain. In the present study, for the sake of comparison, honeycomb specimens with varying wall thicknesses and unit cell lengths maintaining almost same bulk density of around 90% theoretical and relative density of 0.34-0.37 were prepared and subjected to thermal conductivity evaluation along with the solid samples with relative density of 1.0 using monotonic heating regime methodology. In addition, the effect of channel shape was also evaluated using square and triangular channeled honeycombs with the same relative densities. The results obtained from these specimens were correlated with their configurations to bring out the advantages accrued by using the honeycomb with these configurations. It was observed that a significant decrease in thermal conductivity was achieved in honeycombs, which can be attributed to the behavior of various heat transfer mechanisms that are operative at high temperatures in combination with the considerable reduction in thermal mass and the consequent conduction through the solids.

The configuration of hemoglobin in solution and confined inside silica nanotubes has been studied using synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering and electrochemical activity. Confinement inside submicron tubes of silica aid in preventing protein aggregation, which is vividly observed for unconfined protein in solution. The radius of gyration (R-g) and size polydispersity (p) of confined hemoglobin was found to be lower than that in solution. This was also recently demonstrated in case of confined hemoglobin inside layered polymer capsules. The confined hemoglobin displayed a higher thermal stability with Rg and p showing negligible changes in the temperature range 25-75 degrees C. The differences in configuration between the confined and unconfined protein were reflected in their electrochemical activity. Reversible electrochemical response (from cyclic voltammograms) obtained in case of the confined hemoglobin, in contrary to the observance of only a cathodic response for the unconfined protein, gave direct indication of the differences between the residences of the electroactive heme center in a different orientation compared to that in solution state. The confined Hb showed loss of reversibility only at higher temperatures. The electron transfer coefficient (alpha) and electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) were also different, providing additional evidence regarding structural differences between the unconfined and confined states of hemoglobin. Thus, absence of any adverse effects due to confinement of proteins inside the inorganic matrices such as silica nanotubes opens up new prospects for utilizing inorganic matrices as protein ``encapsulators'', as well as sensors at varying temperatures.

Managing heat produced by computer processors is an important issue today, especially when the size of processors is decreasing rapidly while the number of transistors in the processor is increasing rapidly. This poster describes a preliminary study of the process of adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to a standard silicon paste covering a CPU. Measurements were made in two rounds of tests to compare the rate of cool-down with and without CNTs present. The silicon paste acts as an interface between the CPU and the heat sink, increasing the heat transfer rate away from the CPU. To the silicon paste was added 0.05% by weight of CNTs. These were not aligned. A series of K-type thermocouples was used to measure the temperature as a function of time in the vicinity of the CPU, following its shut-off. An Omega data acquisition system was attached to the thermocouples. The CPU temperature was not measured directly because attachment of a thermocouple would have prevented its automatic shut-off A thermocouple in the paste containing the CNTs actually reached a higher temperature than the standard paste, an effect easily explained. But the rate of cooling with the CNTs was about 4.55% better.

This article aims at seeking the universal behavior of propagation rate variation with air superficial velocity (V-s) in a packed bed of a range of biomass particles in reverse downdraft mode while also resolving the differing and conflicting explanations in the literature. Toward this, measurements are made of exit gas composition, gas phase and condensed phase surface temperature (T-g and T-s), and reaction zone thickness for a number of biomass with a range of properties. Based on these data, two regimes are identified: gasificationvolatile oxidation accompanied by char reduction reactions up to 16 +/- 1cm/s of V-s and above this, and char oxidationsimultaneous char oxidation and gas phase combustion. In the gasification regime, the measured T-s is less than T-g; a surface heat balance incorporating a diffusion controlled model for flaming combustion gives and matches with the experimental results to within 5%. In the char oxidation regime, T-g and T-s are nearly equal and match with the equilibrium temperature at that equivalence ratio. Drawing from a recent study of the authors, the ash layer over the oxidizing char particle is shown to play a critical role in regulating the radiation heat transfer to fresh biomass in this regime and is shown to be crucial in explaining the observed propagation behavior. A simple model based on radiation-convection balance that tracks the temperature-time evolution of a fresh biomass particle is shown to support the universal behavior of the experimental data on reaction front propagation rate from earlier literature and the present work for biomass with ash content up to 10% and moisture fraction up to 10%. Upstream radiant heat transfer from the ash-laden hot char modulated by the air flow is shown to be the dominant feature of this model.
