We report a Raman study of single crystal pyrochlore Er(2)Ti(2)O(7) as a function of temperature from 12 to 300 K. In addition to the phonons, various photoluminescence (PL) lines of Er(3+) in the visible range are also observed. Our Raman data show an anomalous red-shift of two phonons (one at similar to 200 cm(-1) and another at similar to 520 cm(-1)) upon cooling from room temperature which is attributed to phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions. However, the phonons at similar to 310, 330, and 690 cm(-1) initially show a blue-shift upon cooling from room temperature down to about 130 K, followed by a red-shift, indicating a structural deformation at similar to 130 K. The intensities of the PL bands associated with the transitions between the various levels of the ground state manifold ((4)I(15/2)) and the (2)H(11/2) as well as (4)S(3/2) excited state manifolds of Er(3+) show a change at similar to 130 K. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the peak position of the two PL bands shows a change in their slope (d(omega)/d(T)) at similar to 130 K, thus further strengthening the proposal of a structural deformation. The temperature dependence of the peak positions of the PL bands has been analyzed using the theory of optical dephasing in crystals.

Equations for the computation of integral and partial thermodynamic properties of mixing in quarternary systems are derived using data on constituent binary systems and shortest distance composition paths to the binaries. The composition path from a quarternary composition to the i-j binary is characterized by a constant value of (Xi − Xj). The merits of this composition path over others with constant values for View the MathML source or Xi are discussed. Finally the equations are generalized for higher order systems. They are exact for regular solutions, but may be used in a semiempirical mode for non-regular solutions.

New compos~tiong radient solid electrolytes are developed which have application in high temperature solid state galvanic sensors and provide a new tool for thermodynamic measurements. The electrolyte consists oi a solid solution between two ionic conductors with a common mobile ion and spatial variation in composition of otber coxup nents. Incorporation of the composite electrolyte in sensors permits the use oi dissimilar gas electrodes. It is demonsuated, both experimentall y and theoretically, that the composition gradient of the relativeiy immobile species does not give rise to a diffusion potential. The emi of a cell is determined by the activity of the mobile species at the two eiectrodes. The thermodynamic properties of solid solutions can be measured using the gradient solid electrolyte. The experimental stuay is based on model systems A?(COj)x(S04)l-x (A=Na,K),where S \.aria across the electrolyte. The functionally gradient solid electrolytes used for activity measurements consist of pure carbonate at one ena and the solid solution under stuav at the other. The identical vaiues of activity, obtained h m t hree different modes of operation of the ceil. indicate unit transport number for the ddi metal ion in the graciient electrolyte. Tlle activities in the solid solutions exhibit moderate positive deviations from Raoult 's law.

he thermodynamic acitivity of chromium in liquid Cu-Cr alloys is measured in the temperature range from 1473 to 1873 K using the solid state cell: Pt, W, Cr + Cr2O3 |(Y2O3) ThO2|Cu - Cr + Cr2O3, Pt The activity of copper and the Gibbs energy of mixing of the liquid alloy are derived. Activities exhibit large positive deviations from Raoult's law. The mixing properties can be represented by a pseudo-subregular solution model in which the excess entropy has the same type of functional dependence on composition as the enthalpy of mixing: ΔGE = XCr(1 - XCr)[60880 - 18750 XCr)-- T(16.25 - 7.55 XCr)]J mol-1 Pure liquid Cu and Cr are taken as the reference states. The results predict a liquid-liquid metastable miscibility gap, with TC = 1787 (±3) K and XCr = 0.436 (±0.02), lying below the liquidus. The results obtained in this study are in general agreement with experimental information reported in the literature, but provide further refinement of the thermodynamic parameters.

Microalgae are the most sought after sources for biofuel production due to their capacity to utilize carbon and synthesize it into high density liquid. Current energy crisis have put microalgae under scanner for economical production of biodiesel. Modifications like physiological stress and genetic variation is done to increase the lipid yield of the microalgae. A study was conducted using a microalgal consortium for a period of 15 days to evaluate the feasibility of algal biomass from laboratory as well as outdoor culture conditions. Native algal strains were isolated from a tropical freshwater lake. Preliminary growth studies indicated the relationship between the nitrates and phosphates to the community structure through the days. The lipid profile done using Gas chromatography – Mass spectrometry, revealed the profile of the algal community. Resource competition led to isolation of algae, aided in the lipid profile of a single alga. However, further studies on the application of the mixed population are required to make this consortium approach economically viable for producing algae biofuels.

Temperature dependence of the energy gap and free carrier absorption in a high-quality InAs0.05Sb0.95 single crystal was studied between 90 K and 430 K through the absorption spectra. At this alloy concentration, the room-temperature energy gap was measured to be 0.15 eV. Varshni- and the Bose–Einstein-type fit parameters were obtained from the measured temperature dependence of the energy gap, and the latter gave the zero-temperature gap to be 0.214 eV. It was found that although Weider’s empirical formula for the dependence of the energy gap on temperature and the alloy concentration agrees with the value of the gap at room temperature, it is inaccurate in describing its temperature dependence. From the free carrier absorption measurements, the phonon limited cross section of 7.35×10−16 cm2 at 15 μm was deduced at room temperature.

Highly (110) preferred orientated antiferroelectric PbZrO3 (PZ) and La-modified PZ thin films have been fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using sol-gel process. Dielectric properties, electric field induced ferroelectric polarization, and the temperature dependence of the dielectric response have been explored as a function of composition. The Tc has been observed to decrease by ∼ 17 °C per 1 mol % of La doping. Double hysteresis loops were seen with zero remnant polarization and with coercive fields in between 176 and 193 kV/cm at 80 °C for antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase transformation. These slim loops have been explained by the high orientation of the films along the polar direction of the antiparallel dipoles of a tetragonal primitive cell and by the strong electrostatic interaction between La ions and oxygen ions in an ABO3 perovskite unit cell. High quality films exhibited very low loss factor less than 0.015 at room temperature and pure PZ; 1 and 2 mol % La doped PZs have shown the room temperature dielectric constant of 135, 219, and 142 at the frequency of 10 kHz. The passive layer effects in these films have been explained by Curie constants and Curie temperatures. The ac conductivity and the corresponding Arrhenius plots have been shown and explained in terms of doping effect and electrode resistance.

Rapid solidification of Ag‐53 at. % Se alloy resulted in the formation of a composite mixture of Ag2.5Se and Se. The microstructure consists of spherical Se grains of 2–20 μm size, randomly distributed in a matrix of Ag2.5 Se. The Se grains were found to be layered hexagonal while the Ag2.5 Se had an orthorhombic crystal structure. The unit cell size of this phase, however, was twice that reported for the equilibrium orthorhombic Ag2 Se compound. The conductivity σ variation with temperature in the range 80–320 K was found to be similar to that observed in degenerate semiconductors. The σ decreased from 295 Ω−1 cm−1 at room temperature to a saturation value of 70 Ω−1 cm−1 for temperatures <80 K. The results are discussed in terms of percolation conduction in the Ag2.5 Se phase.

Electrodeposition produced features with a dendritic morphology and features with a branched wire like morphology made up of about 20 nm sized particles. Both the features contained Ag and Ni atoms in a solid solution arrangement. However, the feature made up of nanoparticles contained a greater concentration of Ni as compared to the Ni content in the dendritic feature. The greater Ni content in the Ag-Ni solid solution for the features with nanoparticles when compared to the dendritic morphology features strongly indicated the effect of curvature in increasing the extent of miscibility between bulk immiscible atoms. This study concerns the flow-acoustic characterisation of a cavity-based combustor configuration. A well-validated numerical tool has been used to simulate the unsteady, two-dimensional reacting flow. Initially, a conventional flow over a cavity with dimensions and conditions corresponding to a compact cavity combustor was studied. Cavity mass injections in the form of fuel and air injections required for trapped vortex formation were then employed and the resonance features of this configuration were studied. The results indicate that the cavity depth mode resonance mechanism is dominant at the conditions studied in this work and that the oscillation frequencies do not change with cavity air injection. This observation is important since it implies that the only important variable which can alter resonant frequencies is the cavity depth. With combustion, the pressure oscillation amplitude was observed to increases significantly due to periodic entrainment of the cavity air jet and fluctuation of fuel-air mixture composition to produce highly fluctuating heat-release rates. The underlying mechanisms of the unsteady flow in the cavity combustor identified in this study indicate the strong dependence of the acoustics on the cavity injection strategies.

The change in thermodynamic quantities (e. g., entropy, specific heat etc.) by the application of magnetic field in the case of the high-T-c superconductor YBCO system is examined phenomenological by the Ginzburg-Landau theory of anisotropic type-II superconductors. An expression for the change in the entropy (Delta S) and change in specific heat (Delta C) in a magnetic field for any general orientation of an applied magnetic field B-a with respect to the crystallographic c-axis is obtained. The observed large reduction of specific heat anomaly just below the superconducting transition and the observed variation of entropy with magnetic field are explained quantitatively.

During V(D)J recombination, RAG (recombination-activating gene) complex cleaves DNA based on sequence specificity. Besides its physiological function, RAG has been shown to act as a structure-specific nuclease. Recently, we showed that the presence of cytosine within the single-stranded region of heteroduplex DNA is important when RAGs cleave on DNA structures. In the present study, we report that heteroduplex DNA containing a bubble region can be cleaved efficiently when present along with a recombination signal sequence (RSS) in cis or trans configuration. The sequence of the bubble region influences RAG cleavage at RSS when present in cis. We also find that the kinetics of RAG cleavage differs between RSS and bubble, wherein RSS cleavage reaches maximum efficiency faster than bubble cleavage. In addition, unlike RSS, RAG cleavage at bubbles does not lead to cleavage complex formation. Finally, we show that the ``nonamer binding region,'' which regulates RAG cleavage on RSS, is not important during RAG activity in non-B DNA structures. Therefore, in the current study, we identify the possible mechanism by which RAG cleavage is regulated when it acts as a structure-specific nuclease. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In-filled and Ge-doped Co4Sb12 skutterudites materials were synthesized by an induction melting process which was followed by annealing at 650 degrees C for 7 days. A structural, compositional, and morphological study was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The formation of a single skutterudite phase (delta-CoSb3) was confirmed by XRD and the composition of all the samples was verified by EPMA. The homogeneity and morphology of the samples was observed by potential Seebeck microprobe (PSM) and SEM, respectively. The PSM result confirmed the inhomogeneity of the samples. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity were measured in the temperature range of 300-650 K. The samples of In0.16Co4Sb12-xGex (x = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2) show a negative Seebeck coefficient confirming an n-type conductivity and the In0.16Co4Sb11.7Ge0.3 sample shows a positive Seebeck coefficient confirming a p-type conductivity. There was a change in the Seebeck coefficient from an n-type to a p-type at the doping concentration of x = 0.3 due to the excess Ge which increases in hole carrier concentration. Electrical conductivity decreases with an increase in Ge doping concentrations and with increases in temperature due to the bipolar effect. Thermal conductivity increases with an increase in carrier concentration and decreases when the temperature is increased. The highest ZT = 0.58 was achieved by In0.16Co4 Sb11.95Ge0.05 at 673K and In-filled and Ge-doped Co4Sb12 was not effective in improving the figure of merit. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. In this paper we report resonance Raman scattering from graphite covering excitation energies in the range 2.4 eV to 6 eV. The Raman excitation profile shows a maximum at 4.94 eV (lambda = 251nm) for the G - band (1582 cm(-1)). The D-band at similar to 1350 cm(-1), attributed to disorder activated Raman scattering, does not show up in Raman spectra recorded with excitation wavelengths smaller than 257.3 nm, revealing that the resonance enhancements of the G and D-modes are widely different. Earlier Raman measurements in carbon materials have also revealed a very large and unusual dependence of the D - mode frequency on excitation laser wavelength. This phenomenon is also observed in carbon nanotubes. In this paper we show for the first time that the above unusual dependence arises from the disorder - induced double resonance mechanism.
