Crystal data for 2a: triclinic, P (1) over bar, a 8.950(1) Angstrom, b = 12.089(3) Angstrom, c = 13.735(3) Angstrom, alpha 81.09(2)degrees, beta = 72.27(1)degrees, gamma = 83.15(2)degrees, V = 1394(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 1. The complexes consist of a diruthenium(III) unit held by two monoatomic and two three-atom bridging ligands. The 1-MeIm ligands are at the terminal sites of the [Ru-2(mu-L)(eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(eta(1):eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(2)](2+) core having a Ru-Ru single bond (L = OMe or eta(1)-O(2)CR). The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-Ru angle in the core of 1a' and 2a are 2.49 Angstrom and similar to 76 degrees. The complexes undergo one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in MeCN-0.1 M TBAP to form mixed-valence diruthenium species with Ru-Ru bonds of orders 1.5 and 0.5, respectively.

The absorption spectrum in the visible range and the, ESR spectrum of vanadyl sulfate were lost on addition of diperoxovanadate. The V-51-NMR spectra revealed that diperoxovanadate was reduced to vanadate and its oligomers. With excess vanadyl, tetrameric vanadate was found to be the major product, During this reaction oxygen was released into the medium. The oxygen-release reaction was inhibited by a variety of organic ligands-imidazole, benzoate, formate, mannitol, ethanol, Tris, DMPO, malate, and asparagine. An oxygen-consuming reaction emerged at high concentrations of some of these compounds, e.g. benzoate and ethanol. Using DMPO as the spin-trap, an oxygen-radical species with a 1:2:2:1 type of ESR spectrum was detected in the reaction mixtures resulting from vanadyl oxidation by diperoxovanadate which was unaffected by addition of catalase or ethanol. The results showed that secondary oxygen-exchange reactions occur which depend on and utilize the intermediates in the primary reaction during diperoxovanadate-dependent oxidation of vanadyl sulfate.

The reaction of the amino spirocyclic cyclotriphosphazene N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2CH2NH) (2) with palladium chloride gives the stable chelate complex [PdCl2.2] (4). An X-ray crystallographic study reveals that one of the nitrogen atoms of the diaminoalkane moiety and an adjacent phosphazene ring nitrogen atom are bonded to the metal. An analogous reaction with the phosphazene N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2NH) (1) gives initially a similar complex which undergoes facile hydrolysis to give the novel monometallic and bimetallic complexes [PdCl2.HN3P3(O)(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2NH2)] (5) and [PdCl{N3P3(NMe2)4(NCH2CH2NH2)}]2(O) (6), which have been structurally characterized; in the former, an (oxophosphazadienyl)ethylenediamine is chelated to the metal whereas, in the latter, an oxobridged bis(cyclotriphosphazene) acts as a hexadentate nitrogen donor ligand in its dianionic form. Crystal data for 4 : a = 14.137(1) angstrom, b = 8.3332(5) angstrom, c = 19.205(2) angstrom, beta = 96.108(7)degrees, P2(1)/c, Z = 4, R = 0.027 with 3090 reflections (F > 5sigma(F)). Anion-deficient perovskite oxides of the formula AM(1-x)Al(x)O(3-x) (A = Na or K; M = Nb or Ta) have been prepared for 0 < x less than or equal to 0.5. Diffraction experiments reveal that while the potassium compounds adopt orthorhombic/cubic perovskite structures similar to the parent KNbO3/KTaO3, the sodium compound, NaNb0.5Al0.5O2.5, possesses a brownmillerite/LaSr-CuAlO5-like superstructure. Al-27 NMR spectra show an exclusive tetrahedral oxygen coordination for AI(III) in Na-Nb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (I) and both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination for Al(III) in KNb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (II). The results suggest a long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in I and II respectively. Electrical conductivity measurements show a significant oxide ion conduction for KNb1-xAlxO3-x, with the conductivity increasing with x up to x = 0.5. The differences in the Arrhenius plots of the ionic conductivity of I and II have been rationalized in terms of the long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in the anion-deficient perovskite oxides.

Abstract: The dynamics of poly(2-vinylpyridine) in chloroform solution has been examined by C-13 spin-lattice relaxation time and NOE measurements as a function of temperature. The experiments were performed at 50.3 and 100.6 MHz. The backbone carbon relaxation data have been analyzed in terms of six motional models. Among these models, the models which consider conformational transitions and bond librations for the backbone were found to be more successful. Pyridyl ring motion has been modeled as a restricted rotation with the rotational amplitude varying with temperature. The activation energy parameters obtained from the relaxation data of the pyridyl ring carbon have been compared with the energy barrier for ring rotation estimated from conformational energy calculations using the AM1 semiempirical quantum chemical method. The results of the conformational energy calculations support the description of pyridyl ring motion as a restricted rotation.

Mo3O5(OH)(2)(AsO4)(2) was prepared at 100 degrees C from an aqueous solution of MoO3 containing arsenic and nitric acids. It crystallises in the monoclinic system, a = 13.024(1)Angstrom, b = 7.2974 (2) Angstrom, c = 13.281(1) Angstrom, beta = 121.124(8)degrees, Z = 4, space group C2/c. The structure was determined by Rietveld refinement from X-ray powder diffraction data. The three-dimensional structure is built up from MoO6 and MoO5OH octahedra and AsO4 tetrahedra sharing corners. The octahedra share two opposite vertices forming zigzag chains that run parallel to [10(1) over bar]. Each AsO4 tetrahedron is connected to four octahedra, two of which belong to the same chain, thus linking three chains. The resulting covalent framework is similar to that of beta VOPO4 in which one tetrahedral P site for every three is empty. The two protons are likely to be bonded to two (out of four) unshared oxygen atoms surrounding this empty site. All the Mo atoms are strongly off-centred in the octahedra; and the off-centring is disordered. The disorder is discussed in terms of Mo shifts perturbed by a disordered hydrogen bonding scheme.

A new class of photo-crosslinkable flame retardant arylphosphate ester polymers based on diarylidenecycloalkanone groups has been synthesized by polymerizing 2,5-divanillylidene cyclopentanone and 2,6-divanillylidenecyclohexanone with various arylphosphorodichloridates by interfacial polycondensation using a phase transfer catalyst. The resulting polymers were characterized by inherent viscosity, g.p.c., i.r., H-1, C-13, P-31 n.m.r. spectroscopy. These polymers were studied for their photochemical and flame retardant properties. The divanillylidene cycloalkanone group in the chain function as photoactive centres while arylphosphate ester groups impart flame retardancy. The photo-crosslinking proceeds via 2 pi + 2 pi cycloaddition reaction of the divanillylidene cycloalkanone moieties. The crosslinking rate, thermal stability and flammability characteristics of the polymers increase with decrease in the size of the cycloalkanone ring. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Diperoxovanadate is effective only in presence of free vanadate in vanadium-dependent bromoperoxidation at physiological pH. Peroxide in the form of bridged divanadate complex (VOOV-type), but not the bidentate form as in diperoxovanadate, is proposed to be the oxidant of bromide. In order to obtain direct evidence, peroxo-divanadate complexes with glycyl-glycine, glycyl-alanine and glycyl-asparagine as heteroligands were synthesized. By elemental analysis and spectral studies they were characterized to be triperoxo-divanadates, [V2O2(O-2)(3)(peptide)(3)]. H2O, with the two vanadium atoms bridged by a peroxide and a heteroligand. The dipeptide seems to stabilize the peroxo-bridge by inter-ligand interaction, possibly hydrogen bonding. This is indicated by rapid degradation of these compounds on dissolving in water with partial loss of peroxide accompanied by release of bubbles of oxygen. The V-51-NMR spectra of such solutions showed diperoxovanadate and decavanadate (oligomerized from vanadate) as the products. Additional oxygen was released on treating these solutions with catalase as expected of residual diperoxovanadate. The solid compounds when added to the reaction mixtures showed transient, rapid bromoperoxidation reaction, but not oxidation of NADH or inactivation of glucose oxidase, the other two activities shown by a mixture of diperoxovanadate and vanadyl. This demonstration of peroxide-bridged divanadate as powerful, selective oxidant of bromide, active at physiological pH, should make it a possible candidate of mimic in the action of vanadium in bromoperoxidase proteins.

A new class of epoxy resins having N-N bonds in the backbone has been synthesized with a view to explore their properties as energetic binders. The N-epoxidation of bis-dicarbonylhydrazones of adipic, azelaic and sebacic dihydrazides results in the formation of viscous resins having epoxide end groups. The resins have been characterized by the elemental and end group analyses, IR and NMR spectra. Relevant properties for their use as binders in solid propellants, such as thermal stability, heat of combustion, burn rate and performance parameters of AP-based propellant systems, have been evaluated. A significant increase in the burn rate of AP-based propellants noticed, is perhaps related to the exothermicity of the binder decomposition and the reactivity of N-N bonds with perchloric acid formed during the combustion of AP.

We present the first results of an observational programme undertaken to map the fine structure line emission of singly ionized carbon ([ CII] 157 : 7409 mum) over extended regions using a Fabry Perot spectrometer newly installed at the focal plane of a 100 cm balloon- borne far- infrared telescope. This new combination of instruments has a velocity resolution of similar to 200 km s(-1) and an angular resolution of 1.'5. During the first flight, an area of 30' x 15' in Orion A was mapped. These observations extend over a larger area than previous observations, the map is fully sampled and the spectral scanning method used enables reliable estimation of the continuum emission at frequencies adjacent to the [ CII] line. The total [ CII] line luminosity, calculated by considering up to 20% of the maximum line intensity is 0.04% of the luminosity of the far- infrared continuum. We have compared the [ CII] intensity distribution with the velocity- integrated intensity distributions of (CO)-C-13(1- 0), CI(1- 0) and CO( 3- 2) from the literature. Comparison of the [ CII], [ CI] and the radio continuum intensity distributions indicates that the largescale [ CII] emission originates mainly from the neutral gas, except at the position of M 43, where no [ CI] emission corresponding to the [ CII] emission is seen. Substantial part of the [ CII] emission from here originates from the ionized gas. The observed line intensities and ratios have been analyzed using the PDR models by Kaufman et al. ( 1999) to derive the incident UV flux and volume density at a few selected positions. The models reproduce the observations reasonably well at most positions excepting the [ CII] peak ( which coincides with the position of theta(1) Ori C). Possible reason for the failure could be the simplifying assumption of a homogeneous plane parallel slab in place of a more complicated geometry.

It is well known that enantiomers cannot be distinguished by NMR spectroscopy unless diastereomorphic interactions are imposed. Several chiral aligning media have therefore been reported for their visualization, although extensive studies are carried out using the liquid crystal made of polypeptide poly-γ-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) in organic solvent. In PBLG medium the spin systems are weakly coupled and the first order analyses of the spectra are generally possible. But due to large number of pair wise interactions of nuclear spins resulting in many degenerate transitions the 1H NMR spectra are not only complex but also broad and featureless, in addition to an indistinguishable overlap of the spectra of enantiomers. This enormous loss of resolution severely hinders the analyses of proton spectra, even for spin systems with 5–6 interacting protons, thereby restricting itsroutine application. In this review we discuss our recently developed several one and multidimensional NMR experiments to circumvent these difficulties taking specific examples of the molecules containing a single chiral centre.

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
