Diglycidyl ether–bisphenol-A-based epoxies toughened with various levels (0–12%) of chemically reacted liquid rubber, hydroxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (HTBN) were studied for some of the mechanical and thermal properties. Although the ultimate tensile strength showed a continuous decrease with increasing rubber content, the toughness as measured by the area under the stress-vs.-strain curve and flexural strength reach a maximum around an optimum rubber concentration of 3% before decreasing. Tensile modulus was found to increase for concentrations below 6%. The glass transition temperature Tg as measured by DTA showed no variation for the toughened formulations. The TGA showed no variations in the pattern of decomposition. The weight losses for the toughened epoxies at elevated temperatures compare well with that of the neat epoxy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of a dual phase morphology with the spherical rubber particles precipitating out in the cured resin with diameter varying between 0.33 and 6.3 μm. In contrast, a physically blended rubber–epoxy showed much less effect towards toughening with the precipitated rubber particles of much bigger diameter (0.6–21.3 μm).

Different modes of binding of pyrimidine monophosphates 2'-UMP, 3'-UMP, 2'-CMP and 3'-CMP to ribonuclease (RNase) A are studied by energy minimization in torsion angle and subsequently in Cartesian coordinate space. The results are analysed in the light of primary binding sites. The hydrogen bonding pattern brings out roles for amino acids such as Asn44 and Ser123 apart from the well known active site residues viz., His12,Lys41,Thr45 and His119. Amino acid segments 43-45 and 119-121 seem to be guiding the ligand binding by forming a pocket. Many of the active site charged residues display considerable movement upon nucleotide binding.

Both semiempirical and ab initio calculations are reported for conformational studies of a series of alpha-substituted acetones CH3COCH2XCH3 where X = CH2, O or S and of phenacyl sulfide PhCOCH2SCH3. For conformational studies in the lowest triplet state of these molecules, the MINDO/3 method was employed in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock frame. Results reveal that rotation around a bond alpha to the carbonyl group is more favourable than that around the beta bond. The preferred conformations in the lowest triplet state are nearly the same as in the ground state.

Raman spectroscopic measurements in borate glasses have been reviewe. The review shows that the technique is useful in identifying the structural groups present in the borate on the basis of the Krogh-Moe hypothesis. Vitreous B2O3 and alkali borates are extensvvely studied and a satisfactory assignment of bands is possible by a careful consideration of the literature. A cation effect on the borate netwoork is observed. Availaable measurements on binary borates other than alkali borates and on ternary borates are limited and more work is required to identify the structural modifications that take place with composition. Mixed alkali effect is reported only lithium-caesium borade and shows the formation of non-bridging oxygens, destroying the six-membered rings when Li2O is replaced by Cs2O. Fast ionic glasses (alkali borates containing alkali halides) yield the same Raman spectra as the alkali borates, except when the alkali is a fluoride.

The variation in the exponent s in σa.c. agr ωs as a function of temperature is reported for lithium thioborate glasses. The origin of the observed minimum in s is discussed using the diffusion-controlled relaxation (DCR) model. An entirely new model for the a.c. conductivity of highly modified ionic glasses has been proposed and expressions for relaxation identical with those of the DCR model have been obtained, providing a new explanation for the temperature behaviour of s. The origin of two activation barriers generally observed in a.c. conductivity studies is examined in the light of the new model.

In order to study the efficiencies of catalytic moieties within and across dendrimer generations, partially and fully functionalized dendrimers were synthesized. Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers from zero to three generations, presenting 3 to 24 peripheral functionalities, were utilized to prepare as many as 12 catalysts. The dendrimer peripheries were partially and fully functionalized with triphenylphosphine in the first instance. A rhodium(I) metal complexation was performed subsequently to afford multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across generations. Upon synthesis, the dendritic catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of styrene, in a substrate-to-catalyst ratio of 1:0.001. Turn-over-numbers were evaluated for each catalyst, from which significant increases in the catalytic activities were identified for multivalent catalysts than monovalent catalysts, both within and across generations. Tri(amino)silanes were prepared by the condensation of trichlorosilane with secondary amines in 1:6 molar ratio. Reactions of trichlorosilane with pyrrolidine, piperidine, hexamethyleneimine, morpholine, N-methylpiperazine and diethylamine afford the tri(amino)silanes in nearly quantitative yields. Their physical and spectroscopic properties are discussed. All these compounds are highly sensitive to moisture and hydrolyse to silica and the respective amine with the evolution of hydrogen. The compounds have been characterised by IR, 1H NMR, [1H]29Si NMR spectroscopic methods and CHN elemental analysis.

he local order around molybdenum and tungsten atoms in various sodium molybdophosphate and sodium tungstophosphate glasses has been investigated using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Both molybdenum and tungsten atoms are present in six-coordinated environment in these glasses. Magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) of P-31 suggests that metaphosphate or neutral [POO3/2] groups are present in these glasses.

Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha, beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple and inexpensive one-step in situ polymerization method in the presence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. The structural, morphological, and electrical properties of the samples were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WAXD and SEM revealed the formation of polyaniline/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that there was some interaction between the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and polyaniline. The dc electrical conductivity measurements were carried in the temperature range of 80 to 300 K. With increase in the doping concentration of ZnFe2O4, the conductivity of the nanocomposites found to be decreasing from 5.15 to 0.92 Scm(-1) and the temperature dependent resistivity follows ln rho(T) similar to T-1/2 behavior. The nanocomposites (80 wt % of ZnFe2O4) show a more negative magnetoresistance compared with that of pure polyaniline (PANI). These results suggest that the interaction between the polymer matrix PANI and zinc nanoparticles take place in these nanocomposites. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silver nanoparticles are being extensively studied due to their widespread applications and unique properties. In the present study, the growth kinetics of silver nanoparticles as synthesized on reduction of silver nitrate solution by aqueous extract of Azadirachta indica leaves was investigated. The formation of silver nanoparticles was preliminarily monitored by measuring the absorption maxima at different time intervals after adding the reducing agent to the silver salt solution (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 h). At different time points characterization studies were conducted using X-ray diffraction studies, FT-IR techniques, zeta potential studies and transmission electron microscopy. The total available silver in the reaction medium was determined at different durations using ICP-OES. The changes in reduction potential in the medium were also monitored using potentiometric analysis. The results confirm a definite change in the medium pertaining to formation of the stable nanoparticles after 2 h, and a significant increase in the agglomeration tendency after 4 h of interaction. The growth kinetic data of the nanoparticles till 3.5 h was found to fit the LSW model confirming diffusion limited growth. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present investigation explores the adaptability of a microwave assisted route to obtain silver nanoparticles by the reduction of AgNO3 with vanillin, an environmentally benign material. Anionic surfactants such as AOT and SDS were used separately for encapsulating AgNPs and their role was compared. The UV-Visible absorption spectra present a broad SPR band consisting of two peaks suggesting the formation of silver nanoparticle with bimodal size distribution. The TEM image shows particles with spherical and hexagonal morphologies which confirms the results of UV-Vis studies. The anisotropy in the particle morphology can be attributed to the surface oxidation which in turn produces Ag@Ag2O core-shell nanostructures. Thus an intriguing feature of this system is that the obtained colloid is a mixture of AgNPs with and without Ag2O layers. Studies on the influence of pH on the stability of the synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the presence of excess Ag2O layers has a profound influence on it. Ag2O layers can be removed from AgNPs' surface by changing the solution pH to the acidic regime. The present study attests the enhanced ability of AOT in stabilizing the AgNPs in aqueous media. Films of (PEG)(x)NH4ClO4 (x = 5 to 1000) were prepared and characterized. The physical properties are observed to be a sensitive function of concentration. Hygroscopicity increases as salt content increases. Conductivity peaks (sigma = 2.7 x 10(-6) S/cm) at x = 46. The H-1 NMR line width has a minimum at x = 46, while that of Cl-35 monotonically increases with salt concentration, indicating that the complex is essentially a protonic conductor.
