An AlCrCuNiFeCo high entropy alloy (HEA), which has simple face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) solid solution phases as the microstructural constituents, was processed and its high temperature deformation behaviour was examined as a function of temperature (700-1030 degrees C) and strain rate (10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1)), so as to identify the optimum thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) conditions for hot working of this alloy. For this purpose, power dissipation efficiency and deformation instability maps utilizing that the dynamic materials model pioneered by Prasad and co-workers have been generated and examined. Various deformation mechanisms, which operate in different temperature-strain rate regimes, were identified with the aid of the maps and complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate two distinct deformation domains within the range of experimental conditions examined, with the combination of 1000 degrees C/10(-3) s(-1) and 1030 degrees C/10(-2) s(-1) being the optimum for hot working. Flow instabilities associated with adiabatic shear banding, or localized plastic flow, and or cracking were found for 700-730 degrees C/10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1) and 750-860 degrees C/10(-1.4)-10(-1) s(-1) combinations. A constitutive equation that describes the flow stress of AlCrCuNiFeCo alloy as a function of strain rate and deformation temperature was also determined. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A sound weld was obtained between 2024-T3 Al alloy and AZ31B-O Mg alloy dissimilar metal plates of 5 mm thickness, at a rotational speed of 300 rev min(-1) and at a welding speed of 50 mm min(-1). One of the parameter studied was, the effect of interface offset variation, on the quality and properties of the welded samples and on the thickness of intermetallic layer formed in the welded samples. The intermetallic layer at the midst of the weld volume contains intermetallic compounds Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2. Highest tensile strength of 106.86 MPa, corresponding tensile joint efficiency of 44.52% and corresponding elongation 1.33% were obtained for the tensile sample, with interface offset of 0.66 mm from zero interface offset in retreating side and with approximate least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. Dissimilar friction stir welded joint samples had failed completely in brittle fracture mode; the position of tensile fracture was located at the midst of intermetallic layer, which had maximum hardness and minimum ductility. The nano hardness values fluctuate in the weld nugget owing to dynamic recrystallization of alloy materials and formation of brittle intermetallic compounds of alloy materials in the weld nugget; maximum hardness of 10.74 GPa occurred for the sample with least intermetallic thickness of 1.2 mu m. When dropped, electronic packages often undergo failure by propagation of an interfacial crack in solder joints under a combination of tensile and shear loading. Hence, it is crucial to understand and predict the fracture behavior of solder joints under mixed-mode high-rate loading conditions. In this work, the effects of the loading conditions (strain rate and loading angle) and microstructure interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) morphology and solder yield strength] on the mixed-mode fracture toughness of Sn-3.8 wt.%Ag-0.7 wt.%Cu solder joints sandwiched between two Cu substrates with electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) metallization have been studied, and compared with the fracture behavior of joints attached to bare Cu. Irrespective of the surface finish, the fracture toughness of the solder joints decreased monotonically with strain rate and mode-mixity, both resulting in increased fracture proportion through the interfacial IMC layer. Furthermore, the proportion of crack propagation through the interfacial IMC layer increased with increase in the thickness and the roughness of the interfacial IMC layer and the yield strength of the solder, resulting in a decrease in the fracture toughness of the joint. However, under most conditions, solder joints with ENIG finish showed higher resistance to fracture than joints attached directly to Cu substrates without ENIG metallization. Based on the experimental observations, a fracture mechanism map is constructed correlating the yield strength of the solder, the morphology and thickness of the interfacial IMC, and the fracture mechanisms as well as the fracture toughness values for different solder joints under mode I loading.

The retention of the desired combination of mechanical/tribological properties in ultrafine grained materials presents important challenges in the field of bulk metallic composites. In order to address this aspect, the present work demonstrates how one can achieve a good combination of hardness and wear resistance in Cu-Pb-TiB2 composites, consolidated by spark plasma sintering at low temperatures ( < 500 degrees C). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies reveal ultrafine grains of Cu (100-400 nm) with coarser TiB2 particles (1-2 mu m) along with fine scale Pb dispersoid at triple junctions or at the grain boundaries of Cu. Importantly, a high hardness of around 2.2 GPa and relative density of close to 90% relative density (rho(theo)) have been achieved for Cu-15 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composite. Such property theo, combination has never been reported for any Cu-based nanocomposite, by conventional processing route. In reference to the tribological performance, fretting wear tests were conducted on the sintered nanocomposites and a good combination of steady state COF (0.6-0.7) and wear rate (10-4 mm(3)/N m) were measured. An inverse relationship between wear rate and hardness was recorded and this commensurates well with Archard's relationship of abrasive wear. The formation of a wear-resistant delaminated tribolayer consisting of TiB2 particles and ultrafine oxide debris, (Cu, Fe, Ti)(x)O-y as confirmed from subsurface imaging using focused ion beam microscopy has been identified as the key factors for the low wear rate of these composites. Friction stir processing (FSP) is emerging as one of the most competent severe plastic deformation (SPD) method for producing bulk ultra-fine grained materials with improved properties. Optimizing the process parameters for a defect free process is one of the challenging aspects of FSP to mark its commercial use. For the commercial aluminium alloy 2024-T3 plate of 6 mm thickness, a bottom-up approach has been attempted to optimize major independent parameters of the process such as plunge depth, tool rotation speed and traverse speed. Tensile properties of the optimum friction stir processed sample were correlated with the microstructural characterization done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD). Optimum parameters from the bottom-up approach have led to a defect free FSP having a maximum strength of 93% the base material strength. Micro tensile testing of the samples taken from the center of processed zone has shown an increased strength of 1.3 times the base material. Measured maximum longitudinal residual stress on the processed surface was only 30 MPa which was attributed to the solid state nature of FSP. Microstructural observation reveals significant grain refinement with less variation in the grain size across the thickness and a large amount of grain boundary precipitation compared to the base metal. The proposed experimental bottom-up approach can be applied as an effective method for optimizing parameters during FSP of aluminium alloys, which is otherwise difficult through analytical methods due to the complex interactions between work-piece, tool and process parameters. Precipitation mechanisms during FSP were responsible for the fine grained microstructure in the nugget zone that provided better mechanical properties than the base metal. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The development of high-strength aluminum alloys that can operate at 250 degrees C and beyond remains a challenge to the materials community. In this paper we report preliminary development of nanostructural Al-Cu-Ni ternary alloys containing alpha-Al, binary Al2Cu and ternary Al2Cu4Ni intermetallics. The alloys exhibits fracture strength of similar to 1 GPa with similar to 9% fracture strain at room temperature. At 300 degrees C, the alloy retains the high strength. The reasons for such significant mechanical properties are rationalized by unraveling the roles and response of various microstructural features. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Intergrowth polymorphism refers to the existence of distinct structural domains within a single crystal of a compound. The phenomenon is exhibited by form II of the active pharmaceutical ingredient felodipine, and the associated microstructure is a significant feature of the compound's structural identity. Employing the technique of nanoindentation on form II reveals a bimodal mechanical response on specific single-crystal faces, demonstrating distinct properties for two polymorphic forms within the same crystal.

The preparation of semisolid slurry of A356 aluminum alloy using an oblique plate was investigated. A356 alloy melt undergoes partial solidification when it flows down on an oblique plate cooled from underneath by counter flowing water. It results in continuous formation of columnar dendrites on plate wall. Due to forced convection, these dendrites are sheared off into equiaxed/fragmented grains and then washed away continuously to produce semisolid slurry at plate exit. Melt pouring temperature provides required condition of solidification whereas plate inclination enables necessary shear for producing semisolid slurry of desired quality. Slurry obtained was solidified in metal mould to produce semisolid-cast billets of desired microstructure. Furthermore, semisolid-cast billets were heat treated to improve surface quality. Microstructures of both semisolid-cast and heat-treated billets were analyzed. Effects of melt pouring temperature and plate inclination on solidification and microstructure of billets produced using oblique plate were described. The investigations involved four different melt pouring temperatures (620, 625, 630 and 635 degrees C) associated with four different plate inclinations (30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 75 degrees). Melt pouring temperature of 625 degrees C with plate inclination of 60 degrees shows fine and globular microstructures and it is the optimum.

The stress states in Si particles of cast Al-Si based alloys depend on its morphology and the heat treatment given to the alloy. The Si particles fracture less on modification and fracture more in the heat treated condition. An attempt has been made in this work to study the effect of heat treatment and Si modification on the stress states of the particles. Such understanding will be valuable for predicting the ductility of the alloy. The stress states of Si particles are estimated by Raman technique and compared with the microstructure-based FEM simulations. Combination of Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and frequency shift, polarized micro-Raman technique is applied to determine the stress states in Si particles with (111) orientations. Stress states are measured in the as-received state and under uniaxial compression. The residual stress, the stress in the elastic-plastic regime and the stress which causes fracture of the particles is estimated by Raman technique. FEM study demonstrates that the stress distribution is uniform in modified Si, whereas the unmodified Si shows higher and more complex stress states. The onset of plastic flow is observed at sharp corners of the particles and is followed by localization of strain between particles. Clustering of particles generates more inhomogeneous plastic strain in the matrix. Particle stress estimated by Raman technique is in agreement with FEM calculations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The work presented in this paper involves the stochastic finite element analysis of composite-epoxy adhesive lap joints using Monte Carlo simulation. A set of composite adhesive lap joints were prepared and loaded till failure to obtain their strength. The peel and shear strain in the bond line region at different levels of load were obtained using digital image correlation (DIC). The corresponding stresses were computed assuming a plane strain condition. The finite element model was verified by comparing the numerical and experimental stresses. The stresses exhibited a similar behavior and a good correlation was obtained. Further, the finite element model was used to perform the stochastic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation. The parameters influencing stress distribution were provided as a random input variable and the resulting probabilistic variation of maximum peel and shear stresses were studied. It was found that the adhesive modulus and bond line thickness had significant influence on the maximum stress variation. While the adherend thickness had a major influence, the effect of variation in longitudinal and shear modulus on the stresses was found to be little. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A simple method employing an optical probe is presented to measure density variations in a hypersonic flow obstructed by a test model in a typical shock tunnel. The probe has a plane light wave trans-illuminating the flow and casting a shadow of a random dot pattern. Local slopes of the distorted wavefront are obtained from shifts of the dots in the pattern. Local shifts in the dots are accurately measured by cross-correlating local shifted shadows with the corresponding unshifted originals. The measured slopes are suitably unwrapped by using a discrete cosine transform based phase unwrapping procedure and also through iterative procedures. The unwrapped phase information is used in an iterative scheme for a full quantitative recovery of density distribution in the shock around the model through refraction tomographic inversion. Hypersonic flow field parameters around a missile shaped body at a free-stream Mach number of 5.8 measured using this technique are compared with the numerically estimated values. In the present work, effect of pouring temperature (650 degrees C, 655 degrees C, and 660 degrees C) on semi-solid microstructure evolution of in-situ magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) reinforced aluminum (Al) alloy composite has been studied. The shear force exerted by the cooling slope during gravity driven flow of the melt facilitates the formation of near spherical primary Mg2Si and primary Al grains. Shear driven melt flow along the cooling slope and grain fragmentation have been identified as the responsible mechanisms for refinement of primary Mg2Si and Al grains with improved sphericity. Results show that, while flowing down the cooling slope, morphology of primary Mg2Si and primary Al transformed gradually from coarse dendritic to mixture of near spherical particles, rosettes, and degenerated dendrites. In terms of minimum grain size and maximum sphericity, 650 degrees C has been identified as the ideal pouring temperature for the cooling slope semi-solid processing of present Al alloy composite. Formation of spheroidal grains with homogeneous distribution of reinforcing phase (Mg2Si) improves the isotropic property of the said composite, which is desirable in most of the engineering applications.

Background: Coats plus syndrome is an autosomal recessive, pleiotropic, multisystem disorder characterized by retinal telangiectasia and exudates, intracranial calcification with leukoencephalopathy and brain cysts, osteopenia with predisposition to fractures, bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension. It is caused by compound heterozygous mutations in the CTC1 gene. Case presentation: We encountered a case of an eight-year old boy from an Indian family with manifestations of Coats plus syndrome along with an unusual occurrence of dextrocardia and situs inversus. Targeted resequencing of the CTC1 gene as well as whole exome sequencing (WES) were conducted in this family to identify the causal variations. The identified candidate variations were screened in ethnicity matched healthy controls. The effect of CTC1 variation on telomere length was assessed using Southern blot. A novel homozygous missense mutation c.1451A > C (p.H484P) in exon 9 of the CTC1 gene and a rare 3'UTR known dbSNP variation (c.*556 T > C) in HES7 were identified as the plausible candidates associated with this complex phenotype of Coats plus and dextrocardia. This CTC1 variation was absent in the controls and we also observed a reduced telomere length in the affected individual's DNA, suggesting its likely pathogenic nature. The reported p.H484P mutation is located in the N-terminal 700 amino acid regionthat is important for the binding of CTC1 to ssDNA through its two OB domains. WES data also showed a rare homozygous missense variation in the TEK gene in the affected individual. Both HES7 and TEK are targets of the Notch signaling pathway. Conclusions: This is the first report of a genetically confirmed case of Coats plus syndrome from India. By means of WES, the genetic variations in this family with unique and rare complex phenotype could be traced effectively. We speculate the important role of Notch signaling in this complex phenotypic presentation of Coats plus syndrome and dextrocardia. The present finding will be useful for genetic diagnosis and carrier detection in the family and for other patients with similar disease manifestations.

We present here observations on diurnal and seasonal variation of mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2, from an urban station-Bangalore (BLR), India, monitored between October 2008 and December 2011. On a diurnal scale, higher mixing ratio with depleted delta C-13 of air CO2 was found for the samples collected during early morning compared to the samples collected during late afternoon. On a seasonal scale, mixing ratio was found to be higher for dry summer months (April-May) and lower for southwest monsoon months (June-July). The maximum enrichment in delta C-13 of air CO2 (-8.04 +/- 0.02aEuro degrees) was seen in October, then delta C-13 started depleting and maximum depletion (-9.31 +/- 0.07aEuro degrees) was observed during dry summer months. Immediately after that an increasing trend in delta C-13 was monitored coincidental with the advancement of southwest monsoon months and maximum enrichment was seen again in October. Although a similar pattern in seasonal variation was observed for the three consecutive years, the dry summer months of 2011 captured distinctly lower amplitude in both the mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2 compared to the dry summer months of 2009 and 2010. This was explained with reduced biomass burning and increased productivity associated with prominent La Nina condition. While compared with the observations from the nearest coastal and open ocean stations-Cabo de Rama (CRI) and Seychelles (SEY), BLR being located within an urban region captured higher amplitude of seasonal variation. The average delta C-13 value of the end member source CO2 was identified based on both diurnal and seasonal scale variation. The delta C-13 value of source CO2 (-24.9 +/- 3aEuro degrees) determined based on diurnal variation was found to differ drastically from the source value (-14.6 +/- 0.7aEuro degrees) identified based on seasonal scale variation. The source CO2 identified based on diurnal variation incorporated both early morning and late afternoon sample; whereas, the source CO2 identified based on seasonal variation included only afternoon samples. Thus, it is evident from the study that sampling timing is one of the important factors while characterizing the composition of end member source CO2 for a particular station. The difference in delta C-13 value of source CO2 obtained based on both diurnal and seasonal variation might be due to possible contribution from cement industry along with fossil fuel / biomass burning as predominant sources for the station along with differential meteorological conditions prevailed.
