An experimental characterization of three-phase equilibria in Fe--V--O and Fe--Nb--O systems at 1823, 1873 and 1923K has been carried out using a solid state cell and by analysis of quenched samples. The oxygen potentials corresponding to these three-phase equilibria were monitored by a solid state cell incorporating Y sub 2 O sub 3 doped ThO sub 2 with Cr + Cr sub 2 O sub 3 as reference electrode. Similar measurements were carried out for Fe--Nb--O alloys in equilibrium with a mixture of FeNb sub 2 O sub 6 and NbO sub 2 . These measurements permit evaluation of interaction parameters (e exp V sub O = --6590/T + 2.892 and e exp Nb sub O = --4066/T + 1.502) and activity coefficients of vanadiun and niobium in dilute solution (ln gamma exp O sub V = --35 320/T + 12.68 and ln gamma sub Nb exp O = --12 386/T + 4.34) in liquid iron. The results obtained in this study resolve a number of discrepancies in thermodynamic data reported in the literature, especially regarding the activity coefficients of V and Nb and the stability ranges for V sub 2 O sub 3 and VO sub 1+x . 18 ref.--AA

On lowering the oxygen potential, the tetragonal phase of YBa2Cu3O7−δ was found to decompose into a mixture of Y2BaCuO5, BaCuO2 and BaCu2O2 in the temperature range 773–1173 K. The 123 compound was contained in a closed crucible of yttria-stabilized zirconia in the temperature range 773–1073 K. Oxygen was removed in small increments by coulometric titration through the solid electrolyte crucible at constant temperature. The oxygen potential was calculated from the open circuit e.m.f. of the solid state cell after successive titrations. Pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa was used as the reference electrode. The decomposition of the 123 compound manifested as a plateau in oxygen potential. The decomposition products were identified by X-ray diffraction. At temperatures above 1073 K there was some evidence of reaction between the 123 compound, solid electrolyte crucible and platinum. For measurements above 1073 K, the 123 compound was contained in a magnesia crucible placed in a closed outer silica tube. The oxygen potential in the gas phase above the 123 compound was controlled and measured by a solid state cell based on yttria-stabilized zirconia which served both as a pump and sensor. The lower oxygen potential limit for the stability of the 123 compound is given by View the MathML source The oxygen non-stoichiometric parameter δ for the 123 compound has a value of 0.98 (View the MathML source) at dissociation.

The variation of equilibrium oxygen potential with oxygen concentration inYBa 2Cu3O7-δhas been measured in the temperature range of 773 to 1223 K. For temperatures up to 1073 K, the oxygen content of theYBa 2Cu3O7-δsample, held in a stabilized-zirconia crucible, was altered by coulometric titration. The compound was in contact with the electrolyte, permitting direct exchange of oxygen ions. For measurements above 1073 K, the oxide was contained in a magnesia crucible placed inside a closed silica tube. The oxygen potential in the gas phase above the 123 compound was controlled and measured by a solid-state cell based on yttria-stabilized zirconia, which served both as a pump and sensor. Pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa was used as the reference electrode. The oxygen pressure over the sample was varied from 10-1 to 105 Pa. The oxygen concentrations of the sample equilibrated with pure oxygen at 1.01 × 105 Pa at different temperatures were determined after quenching in liquid nitrogen by hydrogen reduction at 1223 K. The plot of chemical potential of oxygen as a function of oxygen non-stoichiometry shows an inflexion at δ ∼ 0.375 at 873 K. Data at 773 K indicate tendency for phase separation at lower temperatures. The partial enthalpy and entropy of oxygen derived from the temperature dependence of electromotive force (emf ) exhibit variation with composition. The partial enthalpy for °= 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 also appears to be temperature dependent. The results are discussed in comparison with the data reported in the literature. An expression for the integral free energy of formation of YBa2Cu3O6.5 is evaluated based on measurements reported in the literature. By integration of the partial Gibbs’ energy of oxygen obtained in this study, the variation of integral property with oxygen concentration is obtained at 873 K.

The standard Gibbs energies of formation of SrIrO3, Sr2IrO4 and Sr4IrO6 have been determined in the temperature range from 975 to 1400 K using solid-state cells with (Y2O3) ZrO2 as the electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. For the design of appropriate working electrodes, phase relations in the ternary system Sr–Ir–O were investigated at 1350 K. The only stable oxide detected along the binary Ir–O was IrO2. Three ternary oxides, SrIrO3, Sr2IrO4 and Sr4IrO6, compositions of which fall on the join SrO–IrO2, were found to be stable. Each of the oxides coexisted with pure metal Ir. Therefore, three working electrodes were prepared consisting of mixtures of Ir+SrO+Sr4IrO6, Ir+Sr4IrO6+Sr2IrO4, and Ir+Sr2IrO4+SrIrO3. These mixtures unambiguously define unique oxygen chemical potentials under isothermal and isobaric conditions. Used for the measurements was a novel apparatus, in which a buffer electrode was introduced between reference and working electrodes to absorb the electrochemical flux of oxygen through the solid electrolyte. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the compounds, obtained from the emf of the cells, can be represented by the following equations: View the MathML sourcem View the MathML source View the MathML source where Δf (ox)Go represents the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the ternary compound from its component binary oxides SrO and IrO2. An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Nd-Pd-O at 1350 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 13 different compositions and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. The binary oxides PdO and NdO were not stable at 1350 K. Two ternary oxides Nd4PdO7 and Nd2Pd2O5 were identified. Solid and liquid alloys, as well as the intermetallics NdPd3 and NdPd5, were found to be in equilibrium with Nd2O3. Based on the phase relations, three solidstate cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of PdO and the two ternary oxides. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MP a as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements, conducted from 950 to 1425 K, indicated the presence of a third ternary oxide Nd2PdO4, stable below 1135 (±10) K. Additional cells were designed to study this compound. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of PdO (†f G 0) was measured from 775 to 1125 Kusing two separate cell designs against the primary reference standard for oxygen chemical potential. Based on the thermodynamic information, chemical potential diagrams for the system Nd-Pd-O were also developed.

An advanced design of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode has been developed for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between reference and working electrodes, was to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevented polarization of the measuring electrode and ensured accurate data. The application of the novel design and its advantages have been demonstrated by measuring the standard Gibbs energies of formation of ternary oxides of the system Sm–Pd–O. Yttria-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. For the design of appropriate working electrodes, phase relations in the ternary system Sm–Pd–O were investigated at 1273 K. The two ternary oxides, Sm4PdO7 and Sm2Pd2O5, compositions of which fall on the Sm2O3–PdO join, were found to coexist with pure metal Pd. The thermodynamic properties of the ternary oxides were measured using three-phase electrodes in the temperature range 950–1425 K. During electrochemical measurements a third ternary oxide, Sm2PdO4, was found to be stable at low temperature. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Δf(ox)Go) of the compounds from their component binary oxides Sm2O3 and PdO, can be represented by the equations: Sm4PdO7: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−34,220+0.84T(K) (±280); Sm2PdO4: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−33,350+2.49T(K) (±230); Sm2Pd2O5: Δf(ox)Go (J mol−1)=−59,955+1.80T(K) (±320). Based on the thermodynamic information, three-dimensional P–T–C and chemical potential diagrams for the system Sm–Pd–O were developed.

A new design for the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode for high-temperature thermodynamic measurements is presented. The function of the buffer electrode, placed between the reference and working electrodes, is to absorb the electrochemical flux of the mobile species through the solid electrolyte caused by trace electronic conductivity. The buffer electrode prevents polarization of the measuring electrode and ensures accurate data. The chemical potentials of CaO in two-phase fields (TiO2 + CaTiO3), (CaTiO3 + Ca4Ti3O10), and (Ca4Ti3O10 + Ca3Ti2O7) of the pseudo-binary system (CaO + TiO2) have been measured in the temperature range (900 to 1250) K, relative to pure CaO as the reference state, using solid-state galvanic cells incorporating single crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cells were operated under pure oxygen at ambient pressure. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of calcium titanates, CaTiO3, Ca4Ti3O10, and Ca3Ti2O7, from their component binary oxides were derived from the reversible e.m.f.s. The results can be summarised by the following equations: CaO(solid) + TiO2(solid) → CaTiO3(solid), ΔG° ± 85/(J · mol−1) = −80,140 − 6.302(T/K); 4CaO(solid) + 3TiO2(solid) → Ca4Ti3O10(solid), ΔG° ± 275/(J · mol−1) = −243,473 − 25.758(T/K); 3CaO(solid) + 2TiO2(solid) → Ca3Ti2O7(solid), ΔG° ± 185/(J · mol−1) = −164,217 − 16.838(T/K). The reference state for solid TiO2 is the rutile form. The results of this study are in good agreement with thermodynamic data for CaTiO3 reported in the literature. For Ca4Ti3O10 Gibbs free energy of formation obtained in this study differs significantly from that reported by Taylor and Schmalzried at T = 873 K. For Ca3Ti2O7 experimental measurements are not available in the literature for direct comparison with the results obtained in this study. Nevertheless, the standard entropy for Ca3Ti2O7 at T = 298.15 K estimated from the results of this study using the Neumann–Koop rule is in fair agreement with the value obtained from low-temperature heat capacity measurements.

We have studied the isothermal, magnetic field (H‖c) dependent rf power P(H) dissipation (Hrf‖a) in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals prior to and after irradiation with 250 MeV 107Ag17+ ions. In the pristine state, P(H) shows an initial decrease with increase in field, reaches a minimum at HM(T) and increases monotonically for H>HM(T). This behavior arises when the electromagnetic coupling between the pancake vortices in adjacent CuO layers becomes dominant on increasing the field and minimizes the distortions of the flux lines by confining the 2D vortices. In the post irradiated state, such an initial decrease and the minimum in P(H) is not observed but only a much reduced rf dissipation that monotonically increases with field from H = 0 onwards is seen. We attribute this difference to the strong enhancement of the tilt modulus C44 of the flux lines on irradiation when the pancake vortices in adjacent CuO bilayers are pinned along the track forming a well-stacked flux line in the field direction (‖c). We have also observed that the rf dissipation disappears at a certain temperature Tsf, at which the normal core of the flux line becomes commensurate with the columnar track diameter.

Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.

Colossal electroresistance and current induced resistivity switching have been measured in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state of single crystal manganite La0.82Ca0.18MnO3. The sample has a Curie transition temperature TC = 165 K and the FMI state is realized for temperatures T<100 K. The electroresistance (ER), arising from a strong nonlinear resistivity, attains a large value ( ≈ 100%) in the FMI state. However, this is accompanied by a collapse of the magnetoresistance (MR) to a small value even in magnetic field (H) of 10 T. This demonstrates that the mechanisms that give rise to ER and MR are effectively decoupled.

The 2p 6d feature in the Bi L3 spectra has different energies in the semiconducting (0.0≤x<0.7) and the superconducting (x=0.75) compositions of BaBi1−xPbxO3. The Bi 4f core level spectrum shows distinct features ascribable to Bi III and Bi V in BaBiO3 and in the semiconducting compositions; the width of the 4f peaks is also considerably larger in these compositions compared to that in BaBi0.25Pb0.75O3, which shows a single sharp Bi 4f feature.

Substrate temperature and ion bombardment during deposition have been observed to modify significantly the optical and structural properties of dielectric thin films. Single‐layer films of CeO2 have been deposited by electron beam evaporation with simultaneous oxygen‐ion bombardment using a Kaufman broad beam ion source and maintaining the substrates at elevated temperature. A systematic study has been made on the influence of (a) substrate temperature in the range ambient to 300 °C, (b) ion energy in the range 300–700 eV, and (c) ion current density 100–220 μA/cm2 on optical properties such as refractive index, extinction coefficient, inhomogeneity, packing density, and structural properties. The refractive index increased with in increase in substrate temperature: ion energy up to 600 eV and ion current density. Homogeneous, absorption free and high index (2.48) films have been obtained at 600 eV, 220 μA/cm2 and at substrate temperature of 300 °C. The packing density of the films was observed to be unity for the same deposition conditions. Substrate temperature with simultaneous ion bombardment modified the structure of the films from highly ordered to fine grain structure.

The subject of transients in polyphase induction motors and synchronous machines has been studied in very great detail by several investigators, but no published literature exists dealing exclusively with the analysis of the problem of transients in single-phase induction motors. This particular problem has been studied in this paper by applying the Laplace transform. The results of actual computation of the currents and developed electrical torque are compared with the data obtained by setting up the integro-differential equations of the machine on an electronic differential analyzer. It is shown that if the motor is switched on to the supply when the potential passes through its zero value, there is a pulsating fundamental frequency torque superimposed on the average steady-state unidirectional torque. If, on the other hand, the switch is closed when the applied potential passes through its maximum value, the developed electrical torque settles down to its final steady-state value during the first cycle of the supply voltage.
