Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes Li(H2O)(3)(CH3OH)](4)Cu2Br4]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)](4)(OH)(2) (1), Cu (H2O)(4)]Cu-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CC6H5)](2)Cl-2 center dot 5H(2)O (2), and a dinuclear zinc(II) complex Zn-2(cpdp)(mu-O2CCH3)] (3) have been synthesized using pyridine and benzoate functionality based new symmetrical dinucleating ligand, N, N'-Bis2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N, N'-Bis2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol (H(3)cpdp). Complexes 1, 2 and 3 have been synthesized by carrying out reaction of the ligand H3cpdp with stoichiometric amounts of Cu-2(O2CCH3)(4)(H2O)(2)], CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O/C6H5COONa, and Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively, in methanol in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature. Characterizations of the complexes have been done using various analytical techniques including single crystal X-ray structure determination. The X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the copper(II) ions in complexes 1 and 2 are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Cu-Cu separation of 3.455(8) angstrom and 3.492(1)angstrom, respectively. The DFT optimized structure of complex 3 indicates that two zinc(II) ions are in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with Zn-Zn separation of 3.492(8)angstrom. UV-Vis and mass spectrometric analyses of the complexes confirm their dimeric nature in solution. Furthermore, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopic investigations authenticate the integrity of complex 3 in solution. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the copper centers, with J = -26.0 cm(-1) and -23.9 cm(-1) ((H) over cap = -2JS(1)S(2)) in complexes 1 and 2, respectively. In addition, glycosidase-like activity of the complexes has been investigated in aqueous solution at pH similar to 10.5 by UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique using p-nitrophenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (4) and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5) as model substrates. Tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires are synthesized by Au catalyzed chemical vapor deposition of Sn and C mixture at 900 degrees C by employing a continuous flow of Ar: O-2 (10:1) for an hour. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies indicate that the as-grown SnO2 nanowires are crystalline in nature with tetragonal rutile phase. Electron microscopy studies reveal towards high aspect ratio of nanowires. The field emission studies show that SnO2 nanowires grown on Si substrate exhibit low turn-on field of 1.75 V/mu m (at 0.1 mu A/cm(2)) and long-term emission stability over a period of more than 50 h with a current density of 4 mu A/cm(2) at a constant electric field of 2.25 V/mu m. Hardly any considerable degradation in the emission current is noticed even after 50 h which may be attributed to the high crystallinity of SnO2 nanowires. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Undoped and Cr (3% and 5%) doped CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. The synthesized nanocrystalline particles are characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Raman spectroscopy. XRD studies indicate that Cr doping in host CdS result a structural change from Cubic phase to mixed (cubic + hexagonal) phase. Due to quantum confinement effect, widening of the band gap is observed for undoped and Cr doped CdS nanoparticles compared to bulk CdS. The average particle size calculated from band gap values is in good agreement with the TEM study calculation and it is around 4-5 nm. A strong violet emission band consisting of two emission peaks is observed for undoped CdS nanoparticles, whereas for CdS:Cr nanoparticles, a broad emission band ranging from 420 nm to 730 nm with a maximum at similar to 587 nm is observed. The broad emission band is due to the overlapped emissions from variety of defects. EPR spectra of CdS:Cr samples reveal resonance signal at g = 2.143 corresponding to interacting Cr3+ ions. VSM studies indicate that the diamagnetic CdS nanoparticles are transform to ferromagnetic for 3% Cr3+ doping and the ferromagnetic nature is diminished with increasing the doping concentration to 5%. Energy storage devices based on sodium have been considered as an alternative to traditional lithium based systems because of the natural abundance, cost effectiveness and low environmental impact of sodium. Their synthesis, and crystal and electronic properties have been discussed, because of the importance of electronic conductivity in supercapacitors for high rate applications. The density of states of a mixed sodium transition metal phosphate (maricite, NaMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3PO4) has been determined with the ab initio generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+Hubbard term (U) method. The computed results for the mixed maricite are compared with the band gap of the parent NaFePO4 and the electrochemical experimental results are in good agreement. A mixed sodium transition metal phosphate served as an active electrode material for a hybrid supercapacitor. The hybrid device (maricite versus carbon) in a nonaqueous electrolyte shows redox peaks in the cyclic voltammograms and asymmetric profiles in the charge-discharge curves while exhibiting a specific capacitance of 40 F g(-1) and these processes are found to be quasi-reversible. After long term cycling, the device exhibits excellent capacity retention (95%) and coulombic efficiency (92%). The presence of carbon and the nanocomposite morphology, identified through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies, ensures the high rate capability while offering possibilities to develop new cathode materials for sodium hybrid devices.

High-kappa TiO2 thin films have been fabricated from a facile, combined sol-gel spin - coating technique on p and n type silicon substrate. XRD and Raman studies headed the existence of anatase phase of TiO2 with a small grain size of 18 nm. The refractive index `n' quantified from ellipsometry is 2.41. AFM studies suggest a high quality, pore free films with a fairly small surface roughness of 6 angstrom. The presence of Ti in its tetravalent state is confirmed by XPS analysis. The defect parameters observed at the interface of Si/TiO2 were studied by capacitance - voltage (C - V) and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). The flat - band voltage (V-FB) and the density of slow interface states estimated are -0.9, -0.44 V and 5.24x10(10), 1.03x10(11) cm(-2); for the NMOS and PMOS capacitors, respectively. The activation energies, interface state densities and capture cross -sections measured by DLTS are E-V + 0.30, E-C - 0.21 eV; 8.73x10(11), 6.41x10(11) eV(-1) cm(-2) and 5.8x10(-23), 8.11x10(-23) cm(2) for the NMOS and PMOS structures, respectively. A low value of interface state density in both P-and N-MOS structures makes it a suitable alternate dielectric layer for CMOS applications. And also very low value of capture cross section for both the carriers due to the amphoteric nature of defect indicates that the traps are not aggressive recombination centers and possibly can not contribute to the device operation to a large extent. Synthesis of In2O3 octahedrons is carried out successfully by heating Indium metal pieces in air ambient. The sample is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The as-prepared In2O3 octahedrons are highly crystalline and exhibit body centered cubic structure. Room temperature and temperature (293-453K) dependence photoluminescence reveals a deep levelbroad emission of yellowish-orange spectra centered around 605 nm. The emission is due to the presence of defect levels in the band gap of materials.

GdxZn1-xO (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) nanostructures have been synthesized using sol-gel technique and characterized to understand their structural and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that Gd (0, 2, 4 and 6 %)-doped ZnO nanostructures crystallized in the wurtzite structure having space group C3(v) (P6(3)mc). Photoluminescence and Raman studies of Gd-doped ZnO powder show the formation of singly ionized oxygen vacancies. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that Gd replaces the Zn atoms in the host lattice and maintains the crystal symmetry with slight lattice distortion. Gd L-3-edge spectra reveal charge transfer between Zn and Gd dopant ions. O K-edge spectra also depict the charge transfer through the oxygen bridge (Gd-O-Zn). Weak magnetic ordering is observed in all Gd-doped ZnO samples.

Nanocrystalline powders of Ba1-xMgxZr0.1Ti0.9O3 (x = 0.025-0.1) were synthesized via citrate assisted sol-gel method. Interestingly, the one with x = 0.05 in the system Ba1-xMgxZr0.1Ti0.9O3 exhibited fairly good piezoelectric response aside from the other physical properties. The phase and structural confirmation of synthesized powder was established by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopic techniques. Two distinct Raman bands i.e., 303 and 723 cm(-1) characteristic of tetragonal phase were observed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to evaluate the phase decomposition of the as-synthesized Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 sample as a function of temperature. The average crystallite size associated with Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 was calculated using Scherrer formula based on the XRD data and was found to be 25 nm. However, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy studies revealed the average crystallite size to be in the range of 30-40 nm, respectively. Kubelka-Munk function was employed to determine the optical band gap of these nanocrystallites. A piezoelectric response of 26 pm/V was observed for Ba0.95Mg0.05Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 nanocrystal by Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) technique. Photoluminescence (PL) study carried out on these nanocrystals exhibited a blue emission (470 nm) at room temperature.

Hippocampal pyramidal neurons express an intraneuronal map of spectral tuning mediated by hyperpolarization-activated cyclic-nucleotide-gated nonspecific-cation channels. Modeling studies have predicted a critical regulatory role for A-type potassium (KA) channels towards augmenting functional robustness of this map. To test this, we performed patch-clamp recordings from soma and dendrites of rat hippocampal pyramidal neurons, and measured spectral tuning before and after blocking KA channels using two structurally distinct pharmacological agents. Consistent with computational predictions, we found that blocking KA channels resulted in a significant reduction in resonance frequency and significant increases in input resistance, impedance amplitude and action-potential firing frequency across the somato-apical trunk. Furthermore, across all measured locations, blocking KA channels enhanced temporal summation of postsynaptic potentials and critically altered the impedance phase profile, resulting in a significant reduction in total inductive phase. Finally, pair-wise correlations between intraneuronal percentage changes (after blocking KA channels) in different measurements were mostly weak, suggesting differential regulation of different physiological properties by KA channels. Our results unveil a pivotal role for fast transient channels in regulating theta-frequency spectral tuning and intrinsic phase response, and suggest that degeneracy with reference to several coexisting functional maps is mediated by cross-channel interactions across the active dendritic arbor.

3D porous membranes were developed by etching one of the phases (here PEO, polyethylene oxide) from melt-mixed PE/PEO binary blends. Herein, we have systematically discussed the development of these membranes using X-ray micro-computed tomography. The 3D tomograms of the extruded strands and hot-pressed samples revealed a clear picture as to how the morphology develops and coarsens over a function of time during post-processing operations like compression molding. The coarsening of PE/PEO blends was traced using X-ray micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of annealed blends at different times. It is now understood from X-ray micro-computed tomography that by the addition of a compatibilizer (here lightly maleated PE), a stable morphology can be visualized in 3D. In order to anchor biocidal graphene oxide sheets onto these 3D porous membranes, the PE membranes were chemically modified with acid/ethylene diamine treatment to anchor the GO sheets which were further confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and surface Raman mapping. The transport properties through the membrane clearly reveal unimpeded permeation of water which suggests that anchoring GO on to the membranes does not clog the pores. Antibacterial studies through the direct contact of bacteria with GO anchored PE membranes resulted in 99% of bacterial inactivation. The possible bacterial inactivation through physical disruption of the bacterial cell wall and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) is discussed herein. Thus this study opens new avenues in designing polyolefin based antibacterial 3D porous membranes for water purification.
