The present study focuses on developing functionally graded syntactic foams (FGSFs) based on a layered co-curing technique. The FGSFs were characterized for compressive and flexural properties and compared with plain syntactic foams. The results showed that the specific compressive modulus was 3-67% higher in FGSFs compared to plain syntactic foams. FGSF exhibited 5-34% and 34-87% higher specific modulus and strength, respectively in flexural mode. The microscopic examinations of comparative responses of the filler and matrix to deformation suggest that the failure is dominated by the matrix. The gradient in the composition of syntactic foams helps in effectively distributing the stress throughout the microstructure and results in improved mechanical performance of syntactic foams. From the microscopy studies, it is evident that, the failure mechanism in the FGSF under flexural loading is governed by a crack that initiated on the tensile side of the specimen and propagated through the thickness to cause complete fracture. The microscopic observations further clearly demonstrate the existence of seamless interfaces between the layers and a clear difference in the cenosphere concentration across the interface, affirming the gradation in the prepared samples. The results show that appropriate compositions of FGSFs can be selected to develop materials with improved mechanical performance. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:685-693, 2015. A rainbow matching of an edge-colored graph G is a matching in which no two edges have the same color. There have been several studies regarding the maximum size of a rainbow matching in a properly edge-colored graph G in terms of its minimum degree 3(G). Wang (2011) asked whether there exists a function f such that a properly edge-colored graph G with at least f (delta(G)) vertices is guaranteed to contain a rainbow matching of size delta(G). This was answered in the affirmative later: the best currently known function Lo and Tan (2014) is f(k) = 4k - 4, for k >= 4 and f (k) = 4k - 3, for k <= 3. Afterwards, the research was focused on finding lower bounds for the size of maximum rainbow matchings in properly edge-colored graphs with fewer than 4 delta(G) - 4 vertices. Strong edge-coloring of a graph G is a restriction of proper edge-coloring where every color class is required to be an induced matching, instead of just being a matching. In this paper, we give lower bounds for the size of a maximum rainbow matching in a strongly edge-colored graph Gin terms of delta(G). We show that for a strongly edge-colored graph G, if |V(G)| >= 2 |3 delta(G)/4|, then G has a rainbow matching of size |3 delta(G)/4|, and if |V(G)| < 2 |3 delta(G)/4|, then G has a rainbow matching of size |V(G)|/2] In addition, we prove that if G is a strongly edge-colored graph that is triangle-free, then it contains a rainbow matching of size at least delta(G). A triangulated d-manifold K, satisfies the inequality for da parts per thousand yen3. The triangulated d-manifolds that meet the bound with equality are called tight neighbourly. In this paper, we present tight neighbourly triangulations of 4-manifolds on 15 vertices with as an automorphism group. One such example was constructed by Bagchi and Datta (Discrete Math. 311 (citeyearbd102011) 986-995). We show that there are exactly 12 such triangulations up to isomorphism, 10 of which are orientable.

Nanocomposites of hard (SrFe12O19) and soft ferrite (CoFe2O4) are prepared by mixing individual ferrite components at appropriate weight ratio and subsequent heat treatment. The magnetization of the composites showed hysteresis loop that is characteristic of the exchange spring system. The variation of J(r)/J(r)(infinity) vs. J(d)/J(r)(infinity) for these nanocomposites are investigated to understand the presence of both the interacting field and the disorder in the system. This is further corroborated with the First Order Reversal Curve analysis (FORC) on the nanocomposites of 1:4 (Cobalt Ferrite: Strontium Ferrite) and 1:16 (Cobalt Ferrite: Strontium Ferrite). The FORC distribution reveals that the pinning mechanism is stronger in the nanocomposite of 1:4 compared to 1:16. However, the nanocomposite of 1:16 exhibit superior exchange coupling strength in contrast to 1:4. The asymmetric nature of the FORC distribution at H-c = 0 Oe for both the nanocomposites validates the intercoupling between the reversible and irreversible magnetization. (C) 2015 Author(s).

The inhibition performance of ibuprofen triazole (IT) on mild steel (MS) corrosion in 1.0 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 has been investigated by using electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), gravimetric, and quantum chemical studies. Electrochemical investigation indicates that IT hampers MS corrosion via adsorption through a mixed inhibition mechanism. The protection ability of IT increases with an increasing concentration of inhibitor and decreases with increasing temperature. The adsorption of IT molecules on MS surface follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Certain quantum chemical parameters were calculated to ascertain the correlation between inhibitive effect and molecular structure of IT.

Two new Cu(I) compounds, namely Cu-2(bds)(bpy)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (1) and Cu-4(bds)(2)(azpy)(4)]center dot 6H(2)O (3) (where bds = benzene-1,3-disulfonate, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine and azpy = 4,4'-azopyridine), and four Ag(I) compounds, namely Ag-2(bds)(bpy)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (2), Ag-2(bds)(azpy)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (4), Ag(bds)(1/2)(bpe)]center dot 3H(2)O (5), and Ag-4(bds)(2)(tmdp)(4)]center dot 9H(2)O (6) (where bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethylene and tmdp = 4,4'trimethylenedipyridine), have been synthesized, and their structures were determined and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis and thermal studies. The structure of the compounds changed from 1D (1 and 2) to 2D (3-5) and interpenetrated 3D (6). In the case of 5, a solid-state 2 + 2] photochemical cycloaddition reaction has been performed. Compound 2 exhibits a reversible anion exchange for perchlorate and permanganate, whereas the other compounds (1, 3-6) exhibit an irreversible anion exchange behaviour for perchlorate. Catalytic studies on 2 indicate Lewis acidity.

This paper reports microwave spectroscopic and theoretical investigations on the interaction of water with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP). The HFIP monomer can exist in two conformations, antiperiplanar (AP) and synclinical (SC). The former is about 5 kJ mol(-1) more stable than the latter. Theoretical calculations predicted three potential minima for the complex, two having AP and one having SC conformations. Though, the binding energy for the HFIP(SC)...H2O turned out to be larger than that for the other two conformers having HFIP in the AP form, the global minimum for the complex in the potential energy hypersurface had HFIP in the AP form. Experimental rotational constants for four isotopologues measured using a pulsed nozzle Fourier transform microwave spectrometer, correspond to the global minimum in the potential energy hypersurface. The structural parameters and the internal dynamics of the complex could be determined from the rotational spectra of the four isotopologues. The global minimum has the HFIP(AP) as a hydrogen bond donor forming a strong hydrogen bond with H2O. To characterize the strength of the bonding and to probe the other interactions within the complex, atoms in molecules, non-covalent interaction index and natural bond orbital theoretical analyses have been performed.

Magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) forms an interesting system having tetrahedral and octahedral voids filled with near similar sized divalent Mg2+ and trivalent Al3+ cations. Structural disorder (e.g., Mg-Al antisite defects) can be tuned by synthetic conditions. This study reports the evolution of Mg/Al disorder in MgAl2O4 prepared by combustion synthesis using different types of fuels. The effect of nature of fuel and the final calcination temperature (600 degrees C-900 degrees C for 9h) on degree of cation ordering has been investigated combining powder X-ray (XRD) and neutron (NPD) diffraction. The results indicate very high degree of inversion in the samples crystallized at low annealing temperature, which on further annealing reduces toward the thermodynamically stable values. Raman spectroscopy, probing MgO4, and AlO4 tetrahedral bonds, confirmed the results at a local level.

Quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling provide a unique opportunity to simultaneously control the coupling strength and the screened Coulomb interactions where new exotic phases of matter can be explored. Here we report on the observation of an exotic spin-orbit density wave in Pb-atomic wires on Si(557) surfaces by mapping out the evolution of the modulated spin-texture at various conditions with spin-and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The results are independently quantified by surface transport measurements. The spin polarization, coherence length, spin dephasing rate and the associated quasiparticle gap decrease simultaneously as the screened Coulomb interaction decreases with increasing excess coverage, providing a new mechanism for generating and manipulating a spin-orbit entanglement effect via electronic interaction. Despite clear evidence of spontaneous spin-rotation symmetry breaking and modulation of spin-momentum structure as a function of excess coverage, the average spin polarization over the Brillouin zone vanishes, indicating that time-reversal symmetry is intact as theoretically predicted.

We report the diffusion characteristics of water vapor through two different porous media, viz., membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) in a nonoperational fuel cell. Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) was employed for measuring water vapor concentration in the test channel. Effects of the membrane pore size and the inlet humidity on the water vapor transport are quantified through mass flux and diffusion coefficient. Water vapor transport rate is found to be higher for GDL than for MEA. The flexibility and wide range of application of TDLAS in a fuel cell setup is demonstrated through experiments with a stagnant flow field on the dry side.

Rates of hydrogen/deuterium (H/D) exchange determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy are utilized to derive the strength of hydrogen bonds and to monitor the electronic effects in the site-specific halogen substituted benzamides and anilines. The theoretical fitting of the time dependent variation of the integral areas of H-1 NMR resonances to the first order decay function permitted the determination of HID exchange rate constants (k) and their precise half-lives (t(1/2)) with high degree of reproducibility. The comparative study also permitted the unambiguous determination of relative strength of hydrogen bonds and the contribution from electronic effects on the HID exchange rate. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. We observe exchange bias (EB) in a single magnetic film Fe3O4 at temperature T < 200 K. Irrespective of crystallographic orientations of grown Fe3O4; they exhibit similar nature of EB for (100) epitaxial, (111) oriented and polycrystalline Fe3O4 thin films. Growth induced defects such as anti-phase boundaries (APBs) in epitaxial Fe3O4 thin film is known to have an influence on the magnetic interaction. But, it is noticed that according to the common consensus of APBs alone cannot explain the origin of EB. If majority of APBs end up with mainly anti-ferromagnetic interactions across these boundaries together with the internal ordering modification in Fe3O4, then EB can emerge at low temperatures. Hence, we propose the idea of directional anti-ferromagnetic APB induced EB in Fe3O4 triggered by internal ordering for T <= 200 K. Similar arguments are extended to (111) oriented as well as polycrystalline Fe3O4 films where the grain boundaries can impart same consequence as that of APBs. (C) 2015 Author(s).

Iron-based superconductors have been found to exhibit an intimate interplay of orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom, dramatically affecting their low-energy electronic properties, including superconductivity. Albeit the precise pairing mechanism remains unidentified, several candidate interactions have been suggested to mediate the superconducting pairing, both in the orbital and in the spin channel. Here, we employ optical spectroscopy (OS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), ab initio band-structure, and Eliashberg calculations to show that nearly optimally doped NaFe0.978Co0.022As exhibits some of the strongest orbitally selective electronic correlations in the family of iron pnictides. Unexpectedly, we find that the mass enhancement of itinerant charge carriers in the strongly correlated band is dramatically reduced near the Gamma point and attribute this effect to orbital mixing induced by pronounced spin-orbit coupling. Embracing the true band structure allows us to describe all low-energy electronic properties obtained in our experiments with remarkable consistency and demonstrate that superconductivity in this material is rather weak and mediated by spin fluctuations.
