Palladacycles 7a/7b and 8a/ 8b, upon reflux in PhC1 separately for 6 h, or palladacycles 5a/5b and 6a/6b, upon treatment with AgOTf in CH2Cl2/Me2C(O) (7/3, v/v) mixture for 15 min, afforded Pd{(eta(2)-Ph)C5Ph2(C(O)OR)kappa(2)(C,N)-C(C(O)OR)C6H3Me-3(N=C(NHAr) (2))-2}(OTf)] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; R = Me (9a/9h), Et (10a/10b)) in >= 87% yields. Palladacycles 9a/9b, upon stirring in MeCN in the presence of excess NaOAc followed by crystallization of the reaction mixture in the same solvent, afforded Pd{kappa(3)(N,C,C)-(C6H4)C5Ph2(C(O)OMe)(2)C(C(O)OMe)(2)C6H3Me-3(N=C( NHAr)(2))-2}(NCMe)] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; 11a/11b) in 82% yield. The new palladacycles were characterized by analytical, IR, and NMR (H-1 and C-13) spectroscopic techniques, and the molecular structures of 2, 3a, 4a, 4b, 5a, 6a, 7a, 9a, 10a, and 11a-d(3) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The frameworks in the aforementioned palladacycles, except that present in 2, are unprecedented. Plausible pathways for the formation of new palladacycles and the influence of the guanidine unit in 1, substituents in alkynes, reaction conditions, and electrophilicity of the bromide and the triflate upon the frameworks of the insertion products have been discussed.

We report the growth of carbon nanoflakes (CNFs) on Si substrate by the hot filament chemical vapor deposition without the substrate bias or the catalyst. CNFs were grown using the single wall carbon nanotubes and the multiwall carbon nanotubes as the nucleation center, in the Ar-rich CH4-H-2-Ar precursor gas mixture with 1% CH4, at the chamber pressure and the substrate temperature of 7.5 Ton and 840 degrees C, respectively. In the H-2-rich condition, CNF synthesis failed due to severe etch-removal of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) while it was successful at the optimized Ar-rich condition. Other forms of carbon such as nano-diamond or mesoporous carbon failed to serve as the nucleation centers for the CNF growth. We proposed a mechanism of the CNF synthesis from the CNTs, which involved the initial unzipping of CNTs by atomic hydrogen and subsequent nucleation and growth of CNFs from the unzipped portion of the graphene layers. We demonstrate the electrical transport behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) upon exposure to organic analytes (namely ethanol, benzene, acetone and toluene). The resulting nonlinear current-voltage characteristics revealed a power law dependence of the differential conductivity on the applied bias voltage. Moreover, suppression of differential conductivity at zero bias is found to be dependent on different selective analytes. The power law exponent values have been monitored before, during and after exposure to the chemicals, which revealed a reversible change in the number of electron conducting channels. Therefore, the reduction in the number of conductive paths can be attributed to the interaction of the chemical analyte on the CNT surfaces, which causes a decrease in the differential conductivity of the CNT sample. These results demonstrate chemical selectivity of CNTs due to varying electronic interaction with different chemical analytes.

Solvent polarity has been known to influence the triplet state structure and reactivity. Here, we present our experimental and theoretical study on the effect of solvent on the lowest triplet excited state structure of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX). Time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy has been employed to understand the triplet state electronic structure; whereas solvent-induced structural changes have been studied using time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy. Both the DFT and TD-DFT calculations have been performed in the solution phase employing self-consistent reaction field implicit solvation model to support the experimental data. It has been observed that CO stretching frequencies of the excited triplet state are sensitive to the solvent polarity and increase with the increase in the solvent polarity. Both TA and TR3 studies reveal that specific solvent effect (H-bonding) is more pronounced in comparison to the nonspecific solvent effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

NiTi thin-films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering from single alloy target (Ni/Ti: 45/55 aL.%). The rate of deposition and thickness of sputter deposited films were maintained to similar to 35 nm min(-1) and 4 mu m respectively. A set of sputter deposited NiTi films were selected for specific chemical treatment with the solution comprising of de-ionized water, HF and HNO3 respectively. The influence of chemical treatment on surface characteristics of NiTi films before and after chemical treatment was investigated for their structure, micro-structure and composition using different analytical techniques. Prior to chemical treatment, the composition of NiTi films using energy dispersive X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), were found to be 51.8 atomic percent of Ti and 48.2 atomic percent of Ni. The structure and morphology of these films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD investigations, demonstrated the presence of dominant Austenite (110) phase along with Martensite phase, for untreated NiTi films whereas some additional diffraction peaks viz. (100), (101), and (200) corresponding to Rutile and Anatase phase of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) along with parent Austenite (110) phase were observed for chemically treated NiTi films. FTIR studies, it can be concluded that chemically treated films have higher tendency to form metal oxide/hydroxide than the untreated NiTi films. XPS investigations, demonstrated the presence of Ni-free surface and formation of a protective metal oxide (TiO2) layer on the surface of the films, in both the cases. The extent of the formation of surface oxide layer onto the surface of NiTi films has enhanced after chemical treatment. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated under identical experimental conditions, except by varying the solvent polarity used for spin coating the active layer components and their performance was evaluated systematically. Results showed that presence of nitrobenzene-chlorobenzene composition governs the morphology of active layer formed, which is due to the tuning of solvent polarity as well as the resulting solubility of the P3HT:PCBM blend. Trace amount of nitrobenzene favoured the formation of better organised P3HT domains, as evident from conductive AFM, tapping mode AFM and surface, and cross-sectional SEM analysis. The higher interfacial surface area thus generated produced cells with high efficiency. But, an increase in the nitrobenzene composition leads to a decrease in cell performance, which is due to the formation of an active layer with larger size polymer domain networks with poor charge separation possibility. Gray water treatment and reuse is an immediate option to counter the upcoming water shortages in various parts of world, especially urban areas. Anaerobic treatment of gray water in houses is an alternative low cost, low energy and low sludge generating option that can meet this challenge. Typical problems of fluctuating VFA, low pH and sludge washout at low loading rates with gray water feedstock was overcome in two chambered anaerobic biofilm reactors using natural fibers as the biofilm support. The long term performance of using natural fiber based biofilms at moderate and low organic loading rates (OLR) have been examined. Biofilms raised on natural fibers (coir, ridge-gourd) were similar to that of synthetic media (PVC, polyethylene) at lower OLR when operated in pulse fed mode without effluent recirculation and achieved 80-90% COD removal at HRT of 2 d showing a small variability during start-up. Confocal microscopy of the biofilms on natural fibers indicated thinner biofilms, dense cell architecture and low extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS) compared to synthetic supports and this is believed to be key factor in high performance at low OLR and low strength gray water. Natural fibers are thus shown to be an effective biofilm support that withstand fluctuating characteristic of domestic gray water. (C) 2013 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. Transparent glasses in CaO-Bi2O3-B2O3 system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) carried out on the as-quenched samples confirmed their amorphous and glassy nature respectively. The surface crystallization behaviour of these glasses with and without ultrasonic surface treatment (UST) was monitored using XRD, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The volume fraction, depth of crystallization and the (001) orientation factor for the heat treated samples with and without UST were compared. The ultrasonically-treated samples on subsequent heat treatment were found to crystallize at lower temperatures associated with the highest degree of orientation factor (0.95) in contrast with those of non-UST samples. These surface crystallized glasses were found to exhibit nonlinear optical behaviour emitting green light (532 nm) when they were exposed to the infrared radiation (1064 nm) using Nd:YAG laser.

Elucidation of possible pathways between folded (native) and unfolded states of a protein is a challenging task, as the intermediates are often hard to detect. Here, we alter the solvent environment in a controlled manner by choosing two different cosolvents of water, urea, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and study unfolding of four different proteins to understand the respective sequence of melting by computer simulation methods. We indeed find interesting differences in the sequence of melting of alpha helices and beta sheets in these two solvents. For example, in 8 M urea solution, beta-sheet parts of a protein are found to unfold preferentially, followed by the unfolding of alpha helices. In contrast, 8 M DMSO solution unfolds alpha helices first, followed by the separation of beta sheets for the majority of proteins. Sequence of unfolding events in four different alpha/beta proteins and also in chicken villin head piece (HP-36) both in urea and DMSO solutions demonstrate that the unfolding pathways are determined jointly by relative exposure of polar and nonpolar residues of a protein and the mode of molecular action of a solvent on that protein.

As-prepared graphene oxide (GO) contains oxidative debris which can be washed using basic solutions. We present the isolation and characterization of these debris. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is used to monitor the separation of the debris in various solvents in the presence of different protic and aprotic alkylamino bases. The study reveals that the debris are rich in carbonyl functional groups and water is an essential component for separation and removal of the debris from GO under oxidative reaction conditions.

Current interferon alpha-based treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection fails to cure a sizeable fraction of patients treated. The cause of this treatment failure remains unknown. Here using mathematical modelling, we predict treatment failure to be a consequence of the emergent properties of the interferon-signalling network. HCV induces bistability in the network, creating a new steady state where it can persist. Cells that admit the new steady state alone are refractory to interferon. Using a model of viral kinetics, we show that when the fraction of cells refractory to interferon in a patient exceeds a critical value, treatment fails. Direct-acting antivirals that suppress HCV replication can eliminate the new steady state, restoring interferon sensitivity and improving treatment response. Our study thus presents a new conceptual basis of HCV persistence and treatment response, elucidates the origin of the synergy between interferon and direct-acting antivirals, and facilitates rational treatment optimization.

In this investigation transparent conducting properties of as-deposited and annealed ZnO:Sn:F films deposited using different spray flux density by changing the solvent volume (10 mL, 20 mL ... 50 mL) of the starting solutions have been studied and reported. The structural analyses of the films indicate that all the films have hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO with preferential orientation along (002) plane irrespective of the solvent volume and annealing treatment whereas, the overall crystalline quality of the films is found to be enhanced with the increase in solvent volume as well as with annealing. This observed enhancement is strongly supported by the optical and surface morphological results. From the measurements of electrical parameters, it is seen that, the annealed films exhibit better electrical properties compared to the as-deposited ones. Annealing has caused agglomeration of grains as confirmed by the surface morphological studies. Also, the annealing process has led to an improvement in the optical transparency as well as band gap. It is found from the analyses of the characteristics of the as- deposited and annealed films that the annealed film deposited from starting solution having solvent volume of 50 mL is optimal in all respects, as it possesses all the desirable characteristics including the quality factor (1.60 x 10(-4) (Omega/sq.)(-1)). Two new 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzimidazole-based HSO4- ion selective receptors, 6-(4-nitrophenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c]quinazoline (L1H) and 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c] quinazoline (L2H), and their 1 : 1 molecular complexes with HSO4- were prepared in a facile synthetic method and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques along with the detailed structural analysis of L1H by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Both receptors (L1H and L2H) behave as highly selective chemosensor for HSO4- ions at biological pH in ethanol-water HEPES buffer (1/5) (v/v) medium over other anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, H2PO4-, N-3(-) and ClO4-. Theoretical and experimental studies showed that the emission efficiency of the receptors (L1H and L2H) was tuned successfully through single point to ratiometric detection by employing the substituent effects. Using 3 sigma method the LOD for HSO4- ions were found to be 18.08 nM and 14.11 nM for L1H and L2H, respectively, within a very short responsive time (15-20 s) in 100 mM HEPES buffer (ethanol-water: 1/5, v/v). Comparison of the utility of the probes (L1H and L2H) as biomarkers for the detection of intracellular HSO4- ions concentrations under a fluorescence microscope has also been included and both probes showed no cytotoxic effect.

In several species including the buffalo cow, prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha is the key molecule responsible for regression of corpus luteum (CL). Experiments were carried out to characterize gene expression changes in the CL tissue at various time points after administration of luteolytic dose of PGF(2 alpha) in buffalo cows. Circulating progesterone levels decreased within 1 h of PGF(2 alpha) treatment and evidence of apoptosis was demonstrable at 18 h post treatment. Microarray analysis indicated expression changes in several of immediate early genes and transcription factors within 3 h of treatment. Also, changes in expression of genes associated with cell to cell signaling, cytokine signaling, steroidogenesis, PG synthesis and apoptosis were observed. Analysis of various components of LH/CGR signaling in CL tissues indicated decreased LH/CGR protein expression, pCREB levels and PKA activity post PGF(2 alpha) treatment. The novel finding of this study is the down regulation of CYP19A1 gene expression accompanied by decrease in expression of E-2 receptors and circulating and intra luteal E-2 post PGF(2 alpha) treatment. Mining of microarray data revealed several differentially expressed E-2 responsive genes. Since CYP19A1 gene expression is low in the bovine CL, mining of microarray data of PGF(2 alpha)-treated macaques, the species with high luteal CYP19A1 expression, showed good correlation between differentially expressed E-2 responsive genes between both the species. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that PGF(2 alpha) interferes with luteotrophic signaling, impairs intraluteal E-2 levels and regulates various signaling pathways before the effects on structural luteolysis are manifest.
