CFD investigations are carried out to study the heat flux and temperature distribution in the calandria using a 3–Dimensional RANS code. Internal flow computations and experimental studies are carried out for a calandria embedded with a matrix of tubes working together as a reactor. Numerical investigations are carried on the Calandria reactor vessel with horizontal inlets and outlets located on top and the bottom to study the flow pattern and the associated temperature distribution. The computations have been carried out to simulate fluid flow and convective heat transfer for assigned near–to working conditions with different moderator injection rates and reacting heat fluxes. The results of computations provide an estimate of the tolerance bands for safe working limits for the heat dissipation at different working conditions by virtue of prediction of the hot spots in the calandria. The isothermal CFD results are validated by a set of experiments on a specially designed scaled model conducted over a range of flows and simulation parameters. The comparison of CFD results with experiments show good agreement.

We consider a fluid queue in discrete time with random service rate. Such a queue has been used in several recent studies on wireless networks where the packets can be arbitrarily fragmented. We provide conditions on finiteness of moments of stationary delay, its Laplace-Stieltjes transform and various approximations under heavy traffic. Results are extended to the case where the wireless link can transmit in only a few slots during a frame.

The thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) is an attractive alternative as a pressure wave generator to drive Pulse Tube Cryocoolers (PTCs), by the absence of moving parts, construction simplicity, reasonable efficiency, and environmental friendly. Decreasing the resonance frequency and improving the efficiency of the TAPM are important to drive the PTCs. These are controlled by the working gas parameters other than the dimensions of TAPM. In this technical note, the experimental studies carried out to evaluate the influence of different working fluids on the performances of a twin standing wave TAPM at various operating pressures have been compared with the simulation studies of the same system using DeltaEc wherever possible. The reasonably good agreement between them indicates the utility of DeltaEc for the optimal design of TAPM with the right working fluids for practical applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This article is concerned with a study of an unusual effect due to density of biomass pellets in modern stoves based on close-coupled gasification-combustion process. The two processes, namely, flaming with volatiles and glowing of the char show different effects. The mass flux of the fuel bears a constant ratio with the air flow rate of gasification during the flaming process and is independent of particle density; char glowing process shows a distinct effect of density. The bed temperatures also have similar features: during flaming, they are identical, but distinct in the char burn (gasification) regime. For the cases, wood char and pellet char, the densities are 350, 990 kg/m(3), and the burn rates are 2.5 and 3.5 g/min with the bed temperatures being 1380 and 1502 K, respectively. A number of experiments on practical stoves showed wood char combustion rates of 2.5 +/- 0.5 g/min and pellet char burn rates of 3.5 +/- 0.5 g/min. In pursuit of the resolution of the differences, experimental data on single particle combustion for forced convection and ambient temperatures effects have been obtained. Single particle char combustion rate with air show a near-d(2) law and surface and core temperatures are identical for both wood and pellet char. A model based on diffusion controlled heat release-radiation-convection balance is set up. Explanation of the observed results needs to include the ash build-up over the char. This model is then used to explain observed behavior in the packed bed; the different packing densities of the biomass chars leading to different heat release rates per unit bed volume are deduced as the cause of the differences in burn rate and bed temperatures.

Pulse Forming Line (PFL) based high voltage pulsed power systems are well suited for low impedance High Power Microwave (HPM) sources such as a virtual cathode oscillator (VIRCATOR) operating in nanosecond regimes. The system under development consists of a primary voltage source that charges the capacitor bank of a Marx pulser over a long time duration. The Marx pulser output is then conditioned by a PFL to match the requirement of the HPM diode load. This article describes the design and construction of an oil insulated pulse forming line for a REB (Relativistic Electron Beam) diode used in a VIRCATOR for the generation of high power microwaves. Design of a 250 kV/10 kA/60 ns PFL, including the PSPICE simulation for various load conditions are described.

We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, time-dependent and equal-time structure functions for the vorticity, in both quasi-Lagrangian and Eulerian frames, for the direct-cascade regime in two-dimensional fluid turbulence with air-drag-induced friction. We show that different ways of extracting time scales from these time-dependent structure functions lead to different dynamic-multiscaling exponents, which are related to equal-time multiscaling exponents by different classes of bridge relations; for a representative value of the friction we verify that, given our error bars, these bridge relations hold.
