Geopolymers are an alternative binder to portland cement in the manufacture of mortars and concrete, as its three-dimensional aluminosilicate network imparts excellent mechanical properties. Use of geopolymers in place of ordinary portland cement is favored owing to the possible energy and carbon dioxide savings. River sand is another construction industry material that needs development of a sustainable alternate in India. Geopolymerization of fly ash amorphous silica mixtures is employed to produce fine aggregates as a possible replacement to river sand. Geopolymerization of fly ash amorphous silica mixtures in 10M NaOH solution at 100 degrees C for 7days produced fine aggregates termed fly ash geopolymer sand (FAPS)] that had comparable grain size distribution, specific gravity, and improved frictional resistance with river sand. The FAPS particles exhibited more alkaline pH (12.5) and higher total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration (TDS=747 mg/L) in comparison to the river sand specimen (pH=7.9 and TDS=32.5 mg/L). However, when used as fine aggregate in mortar, FAPS-mortar specimens develop similar pH, lower TDS, similar compressive strength, and modulus in relation to river sand-mortar specimens. The experimental results suggest that FAPS particles have the potential to replace river sand in the manufacture of mortar and concrete.

We report the design and synthesis of an amide functionalized microporous organic polymer (Am-MOP) prepared from trimesic acid and p-phenylenediamine using thionyl chloride as a reagent. Polar amide (CONH) functional groups act as a linking unit between the node and spacer and constitute the pore wall of the continuous polymeric network. The strong covalent bonds between the building blocks (trimesic acid and p-phenylenediamine) through amide bond linkages provide high thermal and chemical stability to Am-MOP. The presence of a highly polar pore surface allows selective CO2 uptake at 195 K over other gases such as N-2, Ar, and O-2. The CO2 molecule interacts with amide functional groups via Lewis acid base type interactions as demonstrated through DFT calculations. Furthermore, for the first time Am-MOP with basic functional groups has been exploited for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction between aldehydes and active methylene compounds. Availability of a large number of catalytic sites per volume and confined microporosity gives enhanced catalytic efficiency and high selectivity for small substrate molecules.

Non-pedogenic carbonates, such as carbonate cement and nodules in the sandstones, are quite common in the terrestrial geological record. Unlike pedogenic carbonates, their stable isotope ratios lack investigations for paleo-climatic reconstructions. The present investigation therefore, explores the possibility of use of stable isotope studies of non-pedogenic carbonates from the Mb-Pleistocene Siwalik Group of sediments exposed in the Ramnagar sub-basin of the NW Himalaya. Petrographic studies reveal the dominance of micrite fabric in carbonate nodules both of pedogenic and non-pedogenic samples irrespective of specific stratigraphic unit However, calcite as cement in the sandstones shows the dominance of micrite fabric in the younger in age sediments. Seventy-two non-pedogenic carbonate samples from the carbonate nodules and cement in the Siwalik sandstones, ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 12.2 Ma, were analyzed for delta C-13 and delta O-18 values. The delta C-13 values vary from -24.77 parts per thousand to -1.1 parts per thousand and delta O-18 values vary from -15.34 parts per thousand to -7.81 parts per thousand. Pedogenic and non-pedogenic carbonates ranging in age between similar to 1 Ma and 6 Ma have largely similar delta C-13 values and the range of delta C-13 values indicate the dominance of C-4 type of vegetation. However, unlike pedogenic carbonates which showed the dominance of C-3 type of vegetation pre- 7 Ma on the basis of delta C-13 -depleted isotopic values (Singh et al., 2011), delta C-13 values are largely enriched in the corresponding aged non-pedogenic carbonates revealing no information on specific type of vegetation. Likewise, paleoprecipitational reconstructions from delta O-18 values in pedogenic carbonates showed a progressive increase in aridity from similar to 12 Ma to recent excluding short term increases in rainfall/monsoon intensity at around 10 Ma, 5 Ma, and 1.8 Ma (Singh et al., 2012). On the contrary, such reconstructions are not possible from the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates and indeed the delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates are largely depleted to as much as 6 parts per thousand from the corresponding pedogenic carbonates. Such differences in delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates from pedogenic carbonates are primarily due to the dependence of the former on groundwater conditions responsible for precipitating carbonate. Further, a comparison of isotopic values between non-pedogenic and pedogenic carbonates can be interpreted that post-6 Ma and pre-6 Ma non-pedogenic carbonates were largely formed by shallow and deep groundwater conditions respectively. The result of these investigative studies therefore, suggests that the stable delta C-13 and delta O-18 values of non-pedogenic carbonates, unlike the pedogenic carbonates and irrespective of nature of calcite fabric, showed their little importance in paleoclimatic and paleoecological reconstructions. This commentary highlights the effectiveness of optoelectronic properties of polymer semiconductors based on recent results emerging from our laboratory, where these materials are explored as artificial receptors for interfacing with the visual systems. Organic semiconductors based polymer layers in contact with physiological media exhibit interesting photophysical features, which mimic certain natural photoreceptors, including those in the retina. The availability of such optoelectronic materials opens up a gateway to utilize these structures as neuronal interfaces for stimulating retinal ganglion cells. In a recently reported work entitled ``A polymer optoelectronic interface provides visual cues to a blind retina,'' we utilized a specific configuration of a polymer semiconductor device structure to elicit neuronal activity in a blind retina upon photoexcitation. The elicited neuronal signals were found to have several features that followed the optoelectronic response of the polymer film. More importantly, the polymer-induced retinal response resembled the natural response of the retina to photoexcitation. These observations open up a promising material alternative for artificial retina applications.

A series of spectral analyses of surface waves (SASW) tests were conducted on a cement concrete pavement by dropping steel balls of four different values of diameter (D) varying between 25.4 and 76.2 mm. These tests were performed (1) by using different combinations of source to nearest receiver distance (S) and receiver spacing (X), and (2) for two different heights (H) of fall, namely, 0.25 and 0.50 m. The values of the maximum wavelength (lambda(max)) and minimum wavelength (lambda(min)) associated with the combined dispersion curve, corresponding to a particular combination of D and H, were noted to increase almost linearly with an increase in the magnitude of the input source energy (E). A continuous increase in strength and duration of the signals was noted to occur with an increase in the magnitude of D. Based on statistical analysis, two regression equations have been proposed to determine lambda(max) and lambda(min) for different values of source energy. It is concluded that the SASW technique is capable of producing nearly a unique dispersion curve irrespective of (1) diameters and heights of fall of the dropping masses used for producing the vibration, and (2) the spacing between different receivers. The results presented in this paper can be used to provide guidelines for deciding about the input source energy based on the required exploration zone of the pavement. Hybrid nanocomposites of polycaprolactone (PCL) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and silver nanoparticles (nAg) were prepared by melt mixing. Synergetic effect of the two nanofillers (MWNT and nAg) in PCL matrix was evaluated for dielectric and antibacterial properties. Dielectric results showed that the addition of nAg as filler in PCL matrix (PCL/nAg) had no effect on conductivity, whereas addition of MWNT in PCL matrix (PCL/MWNT) caused a sharp increase in conductivity of PCL. Interestingly, the hybrid nanocomposite (PCL/MWNT/nAg) incorporating MWNT and nAg also exhibited high electrical conductivity. The hybrid composite was found to have antibacterial property similar to that of PCL/nAg composite for lower loading of nAg. This study demonstrates that the synergetic interaction of the nanofillers in the hybrid nanocomposite improves both electrical conductivity and antibacterial properties of PCL.

Polymer nanocomposites constitute an important class of materials whose properties depend on the state of dispersion of the nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. Here we report the first observations of confinement-induced enhancement of dispersion in nanoparticle-polymer blend films. Systematic variation in the dispersion of nanoparticles with confinement for various compositions and matrix polymer chain dimensions has been observed. For fixed composition, strong reduction in glass transition temperature, T-g, is observed with decreasing blend-film thickness. The enhanced dispersion occurs without altering the polymer-particle interactions and seems to be driven by enhanced matrix-chain orientation propensity and a tendency to minimize the density gradients within the matrix. This implies the existence of two different mechanisms in polymer nanocomposites, which determines their state of dispersion and glass transition.

The average time tau(r) for one end of a long, self-avoiding polymer to interact for the first time with a flat penetrable surface to which it is attached at the other end is shown here to scale essentially as the square of the chain's contour length N. This result is obtained within the framework of the Wilemski-Fixman approximation to diffusion-limited reactions, in which the reaction time is expressed as a time correlation function of a ``sink'' term. In the present work, this sink-sink correlation function is calculated using perturbation expansions in the excluded volume and the polymer-surface interactions, with renormalization group methods being used to resum the expansion into a power law form. The quadratic dependence of tau(r) on N mirrors the behavior of the average time tau(c) of a free random walk to cyclize, but contrasts with the cyclization time of a free self-avoiding walk (SAW), for which tau(r) similar to N-2.2. A simulation study by Cheng and Makarov J. Phys. Chem. B 114, 3321 (2010)] of the chain-end reaction time of an SAW on a flat impenetrable surface leads to the same N-2.2 behavior, which is surprising given the reduced conformational space a tethered polymer has to explore in order to react. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are present in our every day used products such as plastics, cosmetics, air fresheners, paint, etc. The determination of amount of VOC present in atmosphere can be carried out via various sensors. In this work a nanocomposite of a novel thiophene based conducting polymer and carbon black is used as a volatile organic compound sensor. The fabricated 2 lead chemiresistor sensor was tested for vapours of toluene, acetone, cylcohexane, and carbon tetrachloride. The sensor responds to all the vapours, however, exhibit maximum response to toluene vapours. The sensor was evaluated for various concentrations of toluene. The lower limit of detection of the sensor is 15 +/- 10 ppm. The study of the effect of humidity on senor response to toluene showed that the response decreases at higher humidity conditions. The surface morphology of the nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used to investigate the absorption of vapours by the nanocomposite film. Contact angle measurements were used to present the effect of water vapour on the toluene response of nanocomposite film. Solubility parameter of the conducting polymer is predicted by molecular dynamics. The sensing behaviour of the conducting polymer is correlated with solubility parameter of the polymer. Dispersion interaction of conducting polymer with toluene is believed to be the reason for the selective response towards toluene. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present detailed results from a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of phase-separation kinetics in polymer mixtures. Our MD simulations naturally incorporate hydrodynamic effects. We find that polymeric phase separation (with dynamically symmetric components) is in the same universality class as segregation of simple fluids: the degree of polymerization only slows down the segregation kinetics. For d = 2 polymeric fluids, the domain growth law is L(t) similar to t(phi) with phi showing a crossover from 1/3 -> 1/2 -> 2/3. For d = 3 polymeric fluids, we see the crossover phi = 1/3 -> 1. Our MD simulations do not yet access the inertial hydrodynamic regime (with L similar to t(2/3)) of phase separation in 3-d fluids. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The paper deals with experimental investigations aiming at specifying optimum soil grading limits for the production of cement stabilised soil bricks (CSSB). Wide range of soil grading curves encompassing both fine and coarse grained soils were considered. Strength, durability and absorption characteristics of CSSB were examined considering 14 different types of soil grading curves and three cement contents. The investigations show that there is optimum clay content for the soil mix which yields maximum compressive strength for CSSB and the optimum clay content is about 10 and 14 % for fine grained and coarse grained soils respectively. Void ratio of the compacted specimens is the lowest at the optimum clay content and therefore possesses maximum strength at that point. CSSB using fine grained soils shows higher strength and better durability characteristics when compared to the bricks using coarse grained soils.

The demixing of polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl methylether) (PVME) was systematically investigated in the presence of surface functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by melt rheology. As PS-PVME blends are weakly interacting blends, the contribution of conformational entropy increases, resulting in thermo-rheological complexity wherein the concentration fluctuation persists even beyond the critical demixing temperature. These phenomenal changes were followed here in the presence of MWNTs with different surface functional groups. Polystyrene was synthesised by atom transfer radical polymerization and was immobilized onto carboxyl acid functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWNTs) via nitrene chemistry in order to improve the phase miscibility in PS-PVME blends. Interestingly, blends with 0.25 wt% polystyrene grafted multiwall carbon nanotubes (PS-g-MWNTs) delayed the spinodal decomposition temperature in the blends by similar to 33 degrees C with respect to both control blends and those with COOH-MWNTs. While the localization of COOH-MWNTs in PVME was explained from a thermodynamic point of view, the localization of PS-g-MWNTs was understood to result from favorable PS-PVME contact and the degree of surface coverage of PS on the surface of MWNTs. The length of the cooperative rearranging region (xi) decreased in presence of PS-g-MWNTs, suggesting confinement effects on large scale motions and enhanced interchain concentration fluctuation.

We report on the fabrication of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanogratings on silicon (Si) and glass substrates using electron beam lithography technique. Various aspects of proximity corrections using Monte Carlo simulation have been discussed. The fabrication process parameters such as proximity gap of exposure, exposure dosage and developing conditions have been optimized for high-density PMMA nanogratings structure on Si and glass substrates. Electron beam exposure is adjusted in such a way that PMMA acts as a negative tone resist and at the same time resolution loss due to proximity effect is minimum. Both reflection and transmission-type, nanometre period gratings have been fabricated and their diffraction characteristics are evaluated.

The compressive behavior of graphene foam (GF) and its polymer (polydimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) infiltrated structure are presented. While GF showed an irreversible compressibility, the GF/PDMS structure revealed a highly reversible mechanical behavior up to many cycles of compression and also possesses a six times higher compressive strength. In addition, the strain rate demonstrated a negligible effect on both the maximum achieved stress and energy absorption in the GF/PDMS structure. The mechanical responses of both GF and GF/PDMS structure are compared with carbon nanotubes based cellular structure and its composite with PDMS, where GF/PDMS presented a dominant mechanical characteristic among other carbon based micro foam structures. Therefore, the improved mechanical properties of GF/PDMS suggest its potential for dampers, cushions, packaging, etc.

There is increasing interest in the use of nanoparticles as fillers in polymer matrices to develop biomaterials which mimic the mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of bone tissue for orthopaedic applications. The objective of this study was to prepare poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) nanocomposites incorporating three different perovskite ceramic nanoparticles, namely, calcium titanate (CT), strontium titanate (ST) and barium titanate (BT). The tensile strength and modulus of the composites increased with the addition of nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that dispersion of the nanoparticles scaled with the density of the ceramics, which in turn played an important role in determining the enhancement in mechanical properties of the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy revealed improved permittivity and reduced losses in the composites when compared to neat PCL. Nanofibrous scaffolds were fabricated via electrospinning. Induction coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy indicated the release of small quantities of Ca+2, Sr+2, Ba+2 ions from the scaffolds. Piezo-force microscopy revealed that BT nanoparticles imparted piezoelectric properties to the scaffolds. In vitro studies revealed that all composites support osteoblast proliferation. Expression of osteogenic genes was enhanced on the nanocomposites in the following order: PCL/CT>PCL/ST>PCL/BT>PCL. This study demonstrates that the use of perovskite nanoparticles could be a promising technique to engineer better polymeric scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
