Combining site of WBAI is extended and encompasses all the residues of blood group A-reactive trisaccharide [GalNAcalpha3Galbeta4Glc]. Though both of the fucose residues of A-pentasaccharide [GalNAcalpha(Fucalpha2)3Galbeta(Fucalpha3)4Glc] do not directly interact, with the combining site they thermodynamically favour the interaction of GalNAcalpha3Galbeta4Glc part of the molecule by imposing a sterically favourable orientation of the binding epitope viz. GalNAcalpha3Galbeta4Glc of the saccharide. Binding of sugars is driven by enthalpy and is devoid of heat capacity changes. This together with enthalpy-entropy compensation observed for these processes underscore the importance of water reorganization as being one of the principal determinant of protein-sugar interactions.

Molecular dynamics investigation of model diatomic species confined to the alpha-cages of zeolite NaY is reported. The dependence of self-diffusivity on the bond length of the diatomic species has been investigated. Three different sets of runs have been carried out. In the first set, the two atoms of the diatomic molecule interact with the zeolite atoms with equal strength (example, O-2, the symmetric case). In the second and third sets which correspond to asymmetric cases, the two atoms of the diatomic molecule interact with unequal strengths (example, CO). The result for the symmetric case exhibits a well-defined maximum in self-diffusivity for an intermediate bond length. In contrast to this, the intermediate asymmetry leads to a less pronounced maximum. For the large asymmetric case, the maximum is completely absent. These findings are analyzed by computing a number of related properties. These results provide a direct confirmation at the microscopic level of the suggestion by Derouane that the supermobility observed experimentally by Kemball has its origin in the mutual cancellation of forces. The maximum in diffusivity from molecular dynamics is seen at the value predicted by the levitation effect. Further, these findings suggest a role for symmetry in the existence of a diffusivity maximum as a function of diameter of the diffusant often referred to as the levitation effect. The nature of the required symmetry for the existence of anomalous diffusivity is interaction symmetry which is different from that normally encountered in crystallography.

Interaction of CO with Cu clusters deposited on a ZnO(0001) crystal and on ZnO/Zn surfaces (prepared in the electron spectrometer) has been examined by UV and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The interaction is stronger with the small Cu clusters deposited on ZnO/Zn surfaces. Interaction of CO is evert stronger with annealed Cu/ZnO/Zn surfaces where Cu-Zn alloy particles are present. An interaction analysis of an axially loaded single pile and pile group with and without a pile cap in a layered soil medium has been investigated using the two-dimensional photoelastic method. A study of the pile or pile group behaviour has been made, varying the pile cap thickness as well as the embedded length of the pile in the hard stratum. The shear stress distribution along the pile-soil interface, non-dimensionalized settlement values of the single pile and the interaction factor for the pile group have been presented. Wherever possible, the results of the present analysis have been compared with available numerical solutions.

The partial thermodynamic functions of the solvent component of a ternary system have been deduced in terms of the interaction parameters by integration of several series which emerge from the Maclaurin infinite series based on the integral property of the system and subjected to appropriate boundary conditions. The series integration shows that the resulting partial functions are suitable for interpreting the thermodynamic properties of the system and are independent of compositional paths. In the present analysis, the higher order terms of these series are found to make insignificant contributions.

The variation of the viscosity as a function of the sequence distribution in an A-B random copolymer melt is determined. The parameters that characterize the random copolymer are the fraction of A monomers f, the parameter lambda which determines the correlation in the monomer identities along a chain and the Flory chi parameter chi(F) which determines the strength of the enthalpic repulsion between monomers of type A and B. For lambda>0, there is a greater probability of finding like monomers at adjacent positions along the chain, and for lambda<0 unlike monomers are more likely to be adjacent to each other. The traditional Markov model for the random copolymer melt is altered to remove ultraviolet divergences in the equations for the renormalized viscosity, and the phase diagram for the modified model has a binary fluid type transition for lambda>0 and does not exhibit a phase transition for lambda<0. A mode coupling analysis is used to determine the renormalization of the viscosity due to the dependence of the bare viscosity on the local concentration field. Due to the dissipative nature of the coupling. there are nonlinearities both in the transport equation and in the noise correlation. The concentration dependence of the transport coefficient presents additional difficulties in the formulation due to the Ito-Stratonovich dilemma, and there is some ambiguity about the choice of the concentration to be used while calculating the noise correlation. In the Appendix, it is shown using a diagrammatic perturbation analysis that the Ito prescription for the calculation of the transport coefficient, when coupled with a causal discretization scheme, provides a consistent formulation that satisfies stationarity and the fluctuation dissipation theorem. This functional integral formalism is used in the present analysis, and consistency is verified for the present problem as well. The upper critical dimension for this type of renormaliaation is 2, and so there is no divergence in the viscosity in the vicinity of a critical point. The results indicate that there is a systematic dependence of the viscosity on lambda and chi(F). The fluctuations tend to increase the viscosity for lambda<0, and decrease the viscosity for lambda>0, and an increase in chi(F) tends to decrease the viscosity. We study the complexation of nontoxic, native poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The interaction was monitored by measuring the quenching of inherent fluorescence of the dendrimer. The dendrimer-nanotube binding also resulted in the increased electrical resistance of the hole doped SWNT, due to charge-transfer interaction between dendrimer and nanotube. This charge-transfer interaction was further corroborated by observing a shift in frequency of the tangential Raman modes of SWNT. We also report the effect of acidic and neutral pH conditions on the binding affinities. Experimental studies were supplemented by all atom molecular dynamics simulations to provide a microscopic picture of the dendrimer-nanotube complex. The complexation was achieved through charge transfer and hydrophobic interactions, aided by multitude of oxygen, nitrogen, and n-propyl moieties of the dendrimer. Mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4 and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses. Mass spectrometry and other techniques have been employed to identify products of the nucleophilic addition of aliphatic amines to C60 and C70 in solution phase.

In this paper, a plane stress solution for the interaction analysis of strip footing resting on (i) a non-homogeneous elastic half-plane and (ii) a non-homogeneous elastic layer resting on a rigid stratum has been presented. The analysis has been done using a combined analytical and FEM method in which the discretization of the half-plane is not required and thereby minimizes the computational efforts considerably. The contact pressure distribution and the settlement profile for the selected cases of varying modulus half-plane, which has more relevance to foundation engineering, have been given. Experimental verification through a photoelastic method of stress analysis has been carried out for the case of footing on Gibson elastic half-plane, and the contact pressure distribution thus obtained has been compared with the theoretical results. Sheep liver serine hydroxymethyltransferase (EC 2.1.2.1) is a homotetramer of M(r) 213,000 requiring pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) as cofactor, Removal of PLP from the holoenzyme converted the enzyme to the apo form which, in addition to being inactive, was devoid of the characteristic absorption spectrum. Upon the addition of PLP to the apoenzyme, complete activity was restored and the visible absorption spectrum with a maximum at 425 nm was regained. The interaction of PLP with the apoenzyme revealed two phases of reaction with pseudo-first-order rate constants of 20 +/- 5 s(-1) and 12.2 +/- 2.0 x 10(-3) s(-1), respectively. However, addition of PLP to the apoenzyme did not cause gross conformational changes as evidenced by circular dichroic and fluorescence spectroscopy. Although conformationally apoenzyme and holoenzyme were indistinguishable, they had distinct apparent melting temperatures of 51 +/- 2 and 58 +/- 2 degrees C, respectively, and the reconstituted holoenzyme was thermally as stable as the native holoenzyme. These results suggested that there was no apparent difference in the secondary structure of holoenzyme, apoenzyme, and reconstituted holoenzyme, However, sedimentation analysis of the apoenzyme revealed the presence of two peaks of S-20,S-w values of 8.7 +/- 0.5 and 5.7 +/- 0.3 S, respectively. A similar pattern was observed when the apoenzyme was chromatographed on a calibrated Sephadex G-150 column. The first peak corresponded to the tetrameric form (M(r) 200,000 +/- 15,000) while the second peak had a M(r) of 130,000 +/- 10,000. Reconstitution experiments revealed that only the tetrameric form of the apoenzyme could be converted into an active holoenzyme while the dimeric form could not be reconstituted into an active enzyme. These results demonstrate that PLP plays an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of the enzyme by preventing the dissociation of the enzyme into subunits, in addition to its function in catalysis. Interaction between two conical sheets of liquid formed by a coaxial swirl injector has been studied using water in the annular orifice and potassium permanganate solution in the inner orifice. Experiments using photographic techniques have been conducted to study the influence of the inner jet on outer conical sheet spray characteristics such as spray cone angle and break-up length. The core spray has a strong influence on the outer sheet when the pressure drop in the latter is low. This is attributed to the pressure variations caused by ejector effects. This paper also discusses the merging and separation behavior of the liquid sheets which exhibits hysteresis effect while injector pressure drop is varied.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

Kinetic constants of MAb-hCG interactions have been determined using solid phase binding of I-125[hCG] to immobilized MAb. While association has been shown to follow the expected pattern, dissociation consists of at least two reversible steps, one with a rate constant of 0.0025 min(-1), and a second with a rate constant of 0.00023 min(-1). Validity of affinity constant measurements in the light of the complex reaction kinetics is discussed, A comparison between the method of surface plasmon resonance technology (BIAcore) and solid phase binding (SPB) for determination of kinetic parameters shows that SPB provides not only a cost-effective approach for determination of realtime kinetic parameters of macromolecular ligand-ligate interaction but also a method with several advantages over the BIAcore system in investigating the mechanism of antigen-antibody interaction.
