The standard Gibbs energies of formation of lanthanum orthoferrite (LaFeO3-delta) and hexaferrite (LaFe12O19)were determined using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at ambient pressure as the reference electrode. From emf of the solid-state cell, the Gibbs energy of formation of nonstoichiometric orthoferrite (LaFeO3-delta) is obtained. To derive values for the stoichiometric phase, variation of the oxygen nonstoichiometric parameter with oxygen partial pressure was measured using thermogravimetry under controlled gas mixtures. The results obtained for LaFeO3 and LaFe12O19 can be summarized by the following equations, which represent the formation of ternary oxides from their component binary oxides: 1/2 La2O3 + 1/2 Fe2O3 -> LaFeO3: Delta G degrees (LaFeO3) (+/- 450) (J mol(-1)) = -62920 - 2.12T (K), and 1/2 La2O3 + 9/2Fe(2)O(3) + Fe3O4 -> LaFe12O19; Delta G degrees (LaFe12O19) (+/- 200) (J mol(-1)) = -103900 + 21.25T (K). These data are discussed critically in comparison with thermodynamic values reported in the literature from a variety of measurements. The values obtained in this study are consistent with calorimetric entropy and enthalpy of formation of the perovskite phase and with some of the Gibbs energy measurements reported in the literature. For the lanthanum hexaferrite (LaFe12O19) there are no prior thermodynamic measurements for comparison. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The quest for novel two-dimensional materials has led to the discovery of hybrids where graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) occur as phase-separated domains. Using first-principles calculations, we study the energetics and electronic and magnetic properties of such hybrids in detail. The formation energy of quantum dot inclusions (consisting of n carbon atoms) varies as 1/root n, owing to the interface. The electronic gap between the occupied and unoccupied energy levels of quantum dots is also inversely proportional to the length scale, 1/root n-a feature of confined Dirac fermions. For zigzag nanoroads, a combination of the intrinsic electric field caused by the polarity of the h-BN matrix and spin polarization at the edges results in half-metallicity; a band gap opens up under the externally applied ``compensating'' electric field. For armchair nanoroads, the electron confinement opens the gap, different among three subfamilies due to different bond length relaxations at the interfaces, and decreasing with the width.

The present work deals with an ultrasonic type of wave propagation characteristics of monolayer graphene on silicon (Si) substrate. An atomistic model of a hybrid lattice involving a hexagonal lattice of graphene and surface atoms of diamond lattice of Si is developed to identify the carbon-silicon bond stiffness. Properties of this hybrid lattice model is then mapped into a nonlocal continuum framework. Equivalent force constant due to Si substrate is obtained by minimizing the total potential energy of the system. For this equilibrium configuration, the nonlocal governing equations are derived to analyze the ultrasonic wave dispersion based on spectral analysis. From the present analysis we show that the silicon substrate affects only the flexural wave mode. The frequency band gap of flexural mode is also significantly affected by this substrate. The results also show that, the silicon substrate adds cushioning effect to the graphene and it makes the graphene more stable. The analysis also show that the frequency bang gap relations of in-plane (longitudinal and lateral) and out-of-plane (flexural) wave modes depends not only on the y-direction wavenumber but also on nonlocal scaling parameter. In the nonlocal analysis, at higher values of the y-directional wavenumber, a decrease in the frequency band gap is observed for all the three fundamental wave modes in the graphene-silicon system. The atoms movement in the graphene due to the wave propagation are also captured for all the tree fundamental wave modes. The results presented in this work are qualitatively different from those obtained based on the local analysis and thus, are important for the development of graphene based nanodevices such as strain sensor, mass and pressure sensors, atomic dust detectors and enhancer of surface image resolution that make use of the ultrasonic wave dispersion properties of graphene. Geometry and energy of argon clusters confined in zeolite NaCaA are compared with those of free clusters. Results indicate the possible existence of magic numbers among the confined clusters. Spectra obtained from instantaneous normal mode analysis of free and confined clusters give a larger percentage of imaginary frequencies for the latter indicating that the confined cluster atoms populate the saddle points of the potential energy surface significantly. The variation of the percentage of imaginary frequencies with temperature during melting is akin to the variation of other properties. It is shown that confined clusters might exhibit inverse surface melting, unlike medium-to-large-sized free clusters that exhibit surface melting. Configurational-bias Monte Carte (CBMC) simulations of n-alkanes in zeolites Y and A are reported. CBMC method gives reliable estimates of the properties relating to the conformation of molecules. Changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and other longer n-alkanes such as n-hexane and n-heptane when they are confined in different zeolites are presented. The changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and n-hexane with temperature and concentration is discussed. In general, in zeolite Y as well as A, there is significant enhancement of the gauche population as compared to the pure unconfined fluid.

Optical and structural properties of reactive ion beam sputter deposited CeO2 films as a function of oxygen partial pressures (P-O2) and substrate temperatures (T-s) have been investigated. The films deposited at ambient temperature with P-O2 of 0.01 Pa have shown a refractive index of 2.36 which increased to 2.44 at 400 degrees C. Refractive index and extinction coefficient are sensitive up to a T-s of similar to 200 degrees C. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterise the structural properties. A preferential orientation of (220) was observed up to a T-s of 200 degrees C and it changed to (200) at 400 degrees C: and above. Raman line broadening, peak shift and XRD broadening indicate the formation of nanocrystalline phase for the films deposited up to a substrate temperature of 300 degrees C. However, crystallinity of the films were better for T-s values above 300 degrees C. In general both optical and structural properties were unusual compared to the films deposited by conventional electron beam evaporation, but were similar in some aspects to those deposited by ion-assisted deposition. Apart from thermal effects, this behavior is also attributed to the bombardment of backscattered ions/neutrals on the growing film as well as the higher kinetic energy of the condensing species, together resulting in increased packing density. Integral excess free energy of a quaternary system has been expressed in terms of the MacLaurin infinite series. The series is subjected to appropriate boundary conditions and each of the derivatives correlated to the corresponding interaction coefficients. The derivation of the partial functions involves extensive summation of various infinite series pertaining to the first order and quaternary parameters to remove any truncational error. The thermodynamic consistency of the derived partials has been established based on the Gibbs-Duhem relations. The equations are used to interpret the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-Cr-Ni-N system.

The methane-hydrogen gas equilibration technique has been used to measure the chemical potential of carbon associated with two three-phase fields of the system U-W-C in the temperature range 973 to 1173 K. By combining the values of the chemical potential of carbon in the three-phase fields UC + W + UWC1.75 and UC + UWC1.75 + UWC2 Obtained in this study with the data on the Gibbs energy of formation of UC available in the literature, expressions for the Gibbs energies of formation of the two ternary carbides were derived: Delta(f)G degrees [UWC1.75] = -131, 600 - 300 T (+/-8000) J mol(-1) Delta(f)G degrees [UWC2] = -144, 800 - 32.0 T (+/- 10,000) J mol(-1) Although estimates of Gibbs energies of formation of the two ternary carbides TSWC1.75 and UWC2 have been reported, there have been no previous experimental determinations of thermodynamic properties of these compounds.

foam, either stacked together as three layers (MC) or inserted at three different positions (3L) while arranging the stacking sequence during the fabrication of glass fiber-epoxy composites, form the subject of investigation. This stacking variation resulted in a different interfacial area between these foam materials and the glass-epoxy regions in the laminates. This area in designed to be maximum for the 3L variety. The energy of impact being high enough to cause development of the crack in the samples, how the change in interfacial area affects the traverse of the crack front and the failure feature of the laminated composite are reported in the form of photomacrographs in this work. The results point to significant changes for the impact data, like for instance the peak load attained by the different samples, through thickness crack propagation and tensile fracture features on the non-impacted end for the plain variety, separation about the mid-zone for the MC laminates and two or more layer separations for the 3L variety. The separation for the foam-bearing systems occur invariably at the interface and here again one of the (two identical) interfaces only is chosen for the separation.

The He I photoelectron spectra of bromine, methylamine, and their complex have been obtained, and the spectra show that lone-pair orbital energy of nitrogen in methylamine is stabilized by 1.8 eV and the bromine orbital energies are destabilized by about 0.5 eV due to complexation. Ab initio calculations have been performed on the charge-transfer complexes of Br-2 with ammonia and methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamines at the 3-21G*, 6-311G, and 6-311G* levels and also with effective core potentials. Calculations predict donor and acceptor orbital energy shifts upon complexation, and there is a reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Complexation energies have been corrected for BSSE. Frequency analysis has confirmed that ammonia and trimethylamine form complexes with C-3v symmetry and methylamine and dimethylamine with C-s symmetry. Calculations reveal that the lone-pair orbital of nitrogen in amine and the sigma* orbital of Br-2 are involved in the charge-transfer interaction. LANL1DZ basis seems to be consistent and give a reliable estimate of the complexation energy. The computed complexation energies, orbital energy shifts, and natural bond orbital analysis show that the strength of the complex gradually increases from ammonia to trimethylamine.

The chemical potentials of CaO in the two-phase fields Fe2O3 + CaFe2O4 and CaFe2O4 + Ca2Fe2O5 of the pseudobinary system CaO - Fe2O3 have been measured in the temperature range from 975 to 1275 K, relative to pure CaO as the reference state, using solid state galvanic cells incorporating single-crystal CaF2 as the solid electrolyte. The cell was operated under pure oxygen at ambient pressure. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of calcium ferrites, CaFe2O4 and Ca2Fe2O5, were derived from the reversible emfs. The results can be summarized by the following equations:CaO + Fe2O3 --> CaFe2O4;Delta G degrees = - 37,480 + 1.16 T (+/- 250) J/mol 2 CaO + Fe2O3 --> Ca2Fe2O5;Delta G degrees = - 45, 280 - 13.51 T (+/- 275) J/mol These values are compared with thermodynamic data reported in the literature. The results of this study are in excellent agreement with heat capacity data, and in reasonable agreement with earlier measurements of enthalpy and Gibbs energy of formation, but suggest significant revision of enthalpies of formation of calcium ferrites given in current thermodynamic compilations.

We have carried out symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group calculations to study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian. We have used the C-2 symmetry, the electron-hole symmetry, and the spin parity of the system in our calculations. We find that there is a crossover in the lowest dipole forbidden two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state with size of the oligomer. In the long system limit, the two-photon state lies below the lowest dipole allowed excited state. The triplet state lies well below the two-photon state and energetically does not correspond to its description as being made up of two triplets. These results are in agreement with the general trends in linear conjugated polymers. However, unlike in linear polyenes wherein the two-photon state is a localized excitation, we find that in polyacenes, the two-photon excitation is spread out over the system. We have doped the systems with a hole and an electron and have calculated the charge excitation gap. Using the charge gap and the optical gap, we estimate the binding energy of the 1(1)B(-) exciton to be 2.09 eV. We have also studied doubly doped polyacenes and find that the bipolaron in these systems, to be composed of two separated polarons, as indicated by the calculated charge-density profile and charge-charge correlation function. We have studied bond orders in various states in order to get an idea of the excited state geometry of the system. We find that the ground state, the triplet state, the dipole allowed state, and the polaron excitations correspond to lengthening of the rung bonds in the interior of the oligomer while the two-photon excitation corresponds to the rung bond lengths having two maxima in the system.

Neural network models of associative memory exhibit a large number of spurious attractors of the network dynamics which are not correlated with any memory state. These spurious attractors, analogous to "glassy" local minima of the energy or free energy of a system of particles, degrade the performance of the network by trapping trajectories starting from states that are not close to one of the memory states. Different methods for reducing the adverse effects of spurious attractors are examined with emphasis on the role of synaptic asymmetry. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.

The kinetics of thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in solution was investigated at various temperatures (210-250degreesC). The degradation rate coefficients were determined from the time evolution of the molecular weight distribution (MWD). The energy of activation, determined from the temperature dependence of the rate coefficient, was 26.6 kcal/mol. The degradation of PVC was also studied in the presence of a catalyst (HZSM-5 zeolite). The results indicated that increase of the degradation rate of PVC is first order with the HZSM-5 concentration up to 50 g/L and zero order at higher concentrations. The thermal degradation kinetics of PVC in the presence of 50 g/L of the catalyst was studied at various temperatures. The temperature dependency of the rate coefficient was used to calculate the activation energy (21.5 kcal/mol). This is consistent with the observation that the presence of a catalyst generally decreases the activation energy and promotes degradation. (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Inc.

The copolyperoxides of indene with methyl methacrylate and methacrylonitrile have been synthesized by the free-radical-initiated oxidative copolymerization of indene and the monomers. The compositions of copolyperoxides, obtained from H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, have been utilized to determine the reactivity ratios. The reactivity ratios indicate that the copolyperoxides contain a large proportion of the indene units in random placement. Thermal degradation studies of the copolyperoxides by differential scanning calorimetry and electron-impact mass spectroscopy support alternating peroxide units in the copolyperoxide chain. The energy of activation for thermal degradation suggests that the degradation is controlled by the dissociation of the peroxide (-O-O-) bonds in the copolyperoxide chain. The flexibility of copolyperoxide in terms of glass transition temperature (T-g) has also been examined. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
