Studies on the phase relations in the system Nd-Mn-O at 1223 K showed two stable ternary compounds, NdMnO3 and NdMn2O5. An isothermal section of the ternary phase diagram for the system Nd-Mn-O was constructed based on phase analysis of samples quenched after equilibration using XRPD and EDS. An advanced version of the solid-state cell incorporating a buffer electrode was used to determine the Gibbs energies of decomposition of NdMnO3 and NdMn2O5 in the temperature range from 925 to 1400 K. Pure oxygen gas at 0.1 MPa was used as the reference electrode, and yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. The buffer electrode was designed to prevent polarization of the three-phase electrode and ensure accurate data. The measured oxygen potential corresponding to the reaction,2 Nd2O3 + 4 MnO + O-2 --> 4 NdMnO3 can be represented by the equation,Amu(o2) / J.mol(-1) (+/-580) = -523 960 + 170.96 (T/K)Similarly, for the formation of NdMn2O5 according to the reaction,3 NdMnO3 + Mn3O4 + O-2 --> 3 NdMn2O5 Amu(o2) / J.mol(-1) (+/-660) = - 269 390 + 181.74 (T/K) (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Isothermal sections of the phase diagrams for the systems Ln-Pd-O (with Ln = Tb or Er) have been established by equilibration of samples at T = 1223 K, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM, SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Two oxide phases were stable along the binary Tb-O: Tb2O3+x, a phase of variable composition, and Tb7O12 at T = 1223K. The oxide PdO was not stable at this temperature. Only one ternary oxide Tb2Pd2O5 was identified in the Tb-Pd-O system. No ternary compound was found in the system Er-Pd-O at T = 1223K. However, the compound Er2Pd2O5 could be synthesized at T = 1075 K by the hydrothermal route. In both systems, the alloys and inter-metallic compounds were all found to be in equilibrium with the lanthanide sesquioxide Ln(2)O(3) (where Ln is either Tb or Er). Two solid-state cells, each incorporating a buffer electrode, were designed to measure the Gibbs energy of formation of the ternary oxides, using yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas as the reference electrode. Electromotive force measurements were conducted in the temperature range (900-1275) K for Th-Pd-O system, and at temperatures from (900-1075) K for the system Er-Pd-O. The standard Gibbs energy of formation Delta(f)G(m)degrees,, of the inter-oxide compounds from their component binary oxides Ln(2)O(3) and PdO are represented by equations linear in temperature. Isothermal chemical potential diagrams for the systems Ln-Pd-O (with Ln = Tb or Er) are developed based on the thermodynamic information. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ordered double perovskite oxides of the general formula A2BB′O6 have been known for several decades to have interesting electronic and magnetic properties. However, a recent report of a spectacular negative magnetoresistance effect in a specific member of this family, namely Sr2FeMoO6, has brought this class of compounds under intense scrutiny. It is now believed that the origin of the magnetism in this class of compounds is based on a novel kinetically-driven mechanism. This new mechanism is also likely to be responsible for the unusually high temperature ferromagnetism in several other systems, such as dilute magnetic semiconductors, as well as in various half-metallic ferromagnetic systems, such as Heussler alloys.

Thermodynamic properties of Li3N dissolved in the molten LiCl salt at 900 K were explored using electrochemical methods. It was difficult to determine precisely the decomposition voltage of Li3N dissolved in the molten salt by cyclic voltammetry. The oxidation wave of N3– ion could not be located with high accuracy. However, the lithium activity of the Pb-Li alloy in equilibrium with the molten salt containing dissolved Li3N under nitrogen atmosphere could be measured electrochemically with high accuracy using the Li/Li + reference electrode. Under the conditions used in this study, the potential of the Li-Pb electrode is equal to the decomposition voltage of Li3N. The activity of Li3N in molten LiCl was determined for anionic fractions of N3– ranging from xN3– = 10–4 to 0.028. The nitride ion concentration in the salt was determined by chemical titration. The activity coefficient of the Li3N at high dilution was found to be very low, around 10–4. The activity coefficient increases sharply with composition and has a value of 0.25 at xN3– = 0.028. ©2001 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Several variants of hydrated sodium cadmium bisulfate, Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3) center dot 3H(2)O, Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O, and Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 4H(2)O have been synthesized, and their thermal properties followed by phase transitions have been invesigated. The formation of these phases depends on the stochiometry and the time taken for crystallization from water. Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O, which crystallizes in the trigonal system, space group P3c, is grown from the aqueous solution in about four weeks. The krohnkite type mineral Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O and the mineral astrakhanite, also known as blodite, Na(2)Cd (SO(4))(2)center dot 4H(2)O, crystallize concomittantly in about 24 weeks. Both these minerals belong to the monoclinic system(space group P2(1)/c). Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O loses water completely when heated to 250 degrees C and transforms to a dehydrated phase (cubic system, space group I (4) over bar 3d) whose structure has been established using ab initio powder diffration techniques. Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2)center dot 2H(2)O transforms to alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (space group C2/c) on heating to 150 degrees C which is a known high ionic conductor and remains intact over prolonged periods of exposure to moisture (over six months). However, when alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) is heated to 570 degrees C followed by sudden quenching in liquid nitrogen beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (P2(1)/c) is formed. beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) takes up water from the atmosphere and gets converted completely to the krohnkite type mineral in about four weeks. Further, beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) has a conductivity behavior comparable to the a-form up to 280 degrees C, the temperature required for the transformation of the beta- to alpha-form. These experiments demonstrate the possibility of utilizing the abundantly available mineral sources as precursors to design materials with special properties.

A new beam element is developed to study the thermoelastic behavior of functionally graded beam structures. The element is based on the first-order shear deformation theory and it accounts for varying elastic and thermal properties along its thickness. The exact solution of static part of the governing differential equations is used to construct interpolating polynomials for the element formulation. Consequently, the stiffness matrix has super-convergent property and the element is free of shear locking. Both exponential and power-law variations of material property distribution are used to examine different stress variations. Static, free vibration and wave propagation problems are considered to highlight the behavioral difference of functionally graded material beam with pure metal or pure ceramic beams. Metallic Ru has been found to coexist separately with CaO, RuO2, and the interoxide phases, Ca2RuO4, Ca3Ru2O7, and CaRuO3, present along the pseudobinary system CaO-RuO2. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Df((ox))G(o)) of the three calcium ruthenates from their component oxides have been measured in the temperature range 925-1350 K using solid-state cells with yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and Ru+RuO2 as the reference electrode. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Deltaf((ox))G(o)) of the compounds can be represented by Ca2RuO4:Deltaf((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-38,340-6.611 T (+/-120), Ca3Ru2O7 : Df((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-75,910-11.26 T (+/-180), and CaRuO3 : Deltaf((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-35,480-3.844 T(+/-70). The data for Ca2RuO4 corresponds to the stoichiometric composition, which has an orthorhombic structure, space group Pbca, with short c axis ("S'' form). The structural features of the ternary oxides responsible for their mild entropy stabilization are discussed. A three-dimensional oxygen potential diagram for the system Ca-Ru-O is developed as a function of composition and temperature from the results obtained. Using the Neumann-Kopp rule to estimate the heat capacity of the ternary oxides relative to their constituent binary oxides, the standard enthalpies of formation of the three calcium ruthenates from the elements and their standard entropies at 298.15 K are evaluated. A continuum model based on the critical-state theory of soil mechanics is used to generate stress, density, and velocity profiles, and to compute discharge rates for the flow of granular material in a mass flow bunker. The bin–hopper transition region is idealized as a shock across which all the variables change discontinuously. Comparison with the work of Michalowski (1987) shows that his experimentally determined rupture layer lies between his prediction and that of the present theory. However, it resembles the former more closely. The conventional condition involving a traction-free surface at the hopper exit is abandoned in favour of an exit shock below which the material falls vertically with zero frictional stress. The basic equations, which are not classifiable under any of the standard types, require excessive computational time. This problem is alleviated by the introduction of the Mohr–Coulomb approximation (MCA). The stress, density, and velocity profiles obtained by integration of the MCA converge to asymptotic fields on moving down the hopper. Expressions for these fields are derived by a perturbation method. Computational difficulties are encountered for bunkers with wall angles θw [gt-or-equal, slanted] 15° these are overcome by altering the initial conditions. Predicted discharge rates lie significantly below the measured values of Nguyen et al. (1980), ranging from 38% at θw = 15° to 59% at θw = 32°. The poor prediction appears to be largely due to the exit condition used here. Paradoxically, incompressible discharge rates lie closer to the measured values. An approximate semi-analytical expression for the discharge rate is obtained, which predicts values within 9% of the exact (numerical) ones in the compressible case, and 11% in the incompressible case. The approximate analysis also suggests that inclusion of density variation decreases the discharge rate. This is borne out by the exact (numerical) results – for the parameter values investigated, the compressible discharge rate is about 10% lower than the incompressible value. A preliminary comparison of the predicted density profiles with the measurements of Fickie et al. (1989) shows that the material within the hopper dilates more strongly than predicted. Surprisingly, just below the exit slot, there is good agreement between theory and experiment.

Lead ruthenate is used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution and reduction and as a conducting component in thick-film resistors. It also has potential applications in supercapacitors and solid oxide fuel cells. However, thermodynamic properties of the compound have not been reported in the literature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation has now been determined in the temperature range from 873 to 1123 K using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as the electrolyte, a mixture of PbO + Pb2Ru2O6.5 + Ru as the measuring electrode, and Ru + RuO2 as the reference. The design of the measuring electrode is based on a study of phase relations in the ternary system Pb–Ru–O at 1123 K. For the reaction,S0884291400095625_eqnU1 the standard enthalpy of formation and standard entropy at 298.15 K are estimated from the high-temperature measurements. An oxygen potential diagram for the system Pb–Ru–O is composed based on data obtained in this study and auxiliary information from the literature

The tendency of granular materials in rapid shear ow to form non-uniform structures is well documented in the literature. Through a linear stability analysis of the solution of continuum equations for rapid shear flow of a uniform granular material, performed by Savage (1992) and others subsequently, it has been shown that an infinite plane shearing motion may be unstable in the Lyapunov sense, provided the mean volume fraction of particles is above a critical value. This instability leads to the formation of alternating layers of high and low particle concentrations oriented parallel to the plane of shear. Computer simulations, on the other hand, reveal that non-uniform structures are possible even when the mean volume fraction of particles is small. In the present study, we have examined the structure of fully developed layered solutions, by making use of numerical continuation techniques and bifurcation theory. It is shown that the continuum equations do predict the existence of layered solutions of high amplitude even when the uniform state is linearly stable. An analysis of the effect of bounding walls on the bifurcation structure reveals that the nature of the wall boundary conditions plays a pivotal role in selecting that branch of non-uniform solutions which emerges as the primary branch. This demonstrates unequivocally that the results on the stability of bounded shear flow of granular materials presented previously by Wang et al. (1996) are, in general, based on erroneous base states.

Structural transformation and ionic transport properties are investigated on wet-chemically synthesized La1-xMnO3 (X=0.0-0.18) compositions. Powders annealed in oxygen/air at 1000-1080 K exhibit cubic symmetry and transform to rhombohedral on annealing at 1173-1573 K in air/oxygen. Annealing above 1773 K in air or in argon/helium at 1473 K stabilized distorted rhombohedral or orthorhombic symmetry. Structural transformations are confirmed from XRD and TEM studies. The total conductivity of sintered disks, measured by four-probe technique, ranges from 5 S cm(-1) at 298 K to 105 S cm(-1) at 1273 K. The ionic conductivity measured by blocking electrode technique ranges from 1.0X10(-6) S cm(-1) at 700 K to 2.0X10(-3) S cm(-1) at 1273 K. The ionic transference number of these compositions ranges from 3.0X10(-5) to 5.0X10(-5) at 1273 K. The activation energy deduced from experimental data for ionic conduction and ionic migration is 1.03-1.10 and 0.80-1.00 eV, respectively. The activation energy of formation, association and migration of vacancies ranges from 1.07 to 1.44 eV. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Deposition of durable thin film coatings by vacuum evaporation on acrylic substrates for optical applications is a challenging job. Films crack upon deposition due to internal stresses and leads to performance degradation. In this investigation, we report the preparation and characterization of single and multi-layer films of TiO2, CeO2, Substance2 (E Merck, Germany), Al2O3, SiO2 and MgF2 by electron beam evaporation on both glass and PMMA substrates. Optical micrographs taken on single layer films deposited on PMMA substrates did not reveal any cracks. Cracks in films were observed on PMMA substrates when the substrate temperature exceeded 80degreesC. Antireflection coatings of 3 and 4 layers have been deposited and characterized. Antireflection coatings made on PMMA substrate using Substance2 (H2) and SiO2 combination showed very fine cracks when observed under microscope. Optical performance of the coatings has been explained with the help of optical micrographs.

In this paper, the effects of T -stress on steady, dynamic crack growth in an elastic-plastic material are examined using a modified boundary layer formulation. The analyses are carried out under mode I, plane strain conditions by employing a special finite element procedure based on moving crack tip coordinates. The material is assumed to obey the J (2) flow theory of plasticity with isotropic power law hardening. The results show that the crack opening profile as well as the opening stress at a finite distance from the tip are strongly affected by the magnitude and sign of the T -stress at any given crack speed. Further, it is found that the fracture toughness predicted by the analyses enhances significantly with negative T -stress for both ductile and cleavage mode of crack growth.
