We present evidence that the springtime western boundary current (WBC) in the Bay of Bengal is a continuous northward-flowing current from about 12 degrees N to 17 degrees N, which then separates from the coast at around 18 degrees N. We first revisit a hydrographic data set collected in 1987 from a potential vorticity perspective, and then analyze absolute dynamic height maps from satellite altimeters during the period 2000-2010. The altimetric maps suggest that the mean configuration of the WBC is that of an intense current with two anticyclonic eddies on the offshore side, which are part of the basin-wide anticyclonic circulation. The WBC consistently separates from the coast at around 18 degrees N in all years between 2000 and 2010. The path of the eastward-flowing mean stream after separation appears to be consistent with isolines of f/H and with Ertel's potential vorticity, based on an analysis of the hydrographic data from 1987.

CuIn1-xAlxSe2 (CIASe) thin films were grown by a simple sol-gel route followed by annealing under vacuum. Parameters related to the spin-orbit (Delta(SO)) and crystal field (Delta(CF)) were determined using a quasi-cubic model. Highly oriented (002) aluminum doped (2%) ZnO, 100 nm thin films, were co-sputtered for CuIn1-xAlxSe2/AZnO based solar cells. Barrier height and ideality factor varied from 0.63 eV to 0.51 eV and 1.3186 to 2.095 in the dark and under 1.38 A. M 1.5 solar illumination respectively. Current-voltage characteristics carried out at 300 K were confined to a triangle, exhibiting three limiting conduction mechanisms: Ohms law, trap-filled limit curve and SCLC, with 0.2 V being the cross-over voltage, for a quadratic transition from Ohm's to Child's law. Visible photodetection was demonstrated with a CIASe/AZO photodiode configuration. Photocurrent was enhanced by one order from 3 x 10(-3) A in the dark at 1 V to 3 x 10(-2) A upon 1.38 sun illumination. The optimized photodiode exhibits an external quantum efficiency of over 32% to 10% from 350 to 1100 nm at high intensity 17.99 mW cm(-2) solar illumination. High responsivity R-lambda similar to 920 A W-1, sensitivity S similar to 9.0, specific detectivity D* similar to 3 x 10(14) Jones, make CIASe a potential absorber for enhancing the forthcoming technological applications of photodetection.

Overmodulation introduces low-order harmonics in the output voltage of a voltage source inverter. This paper presents the effects of low-order harmonics in the stator voltage on the rotor currents of an induction motor. Rotor current waveforms are presented for various operating zones in overmodulation, including six-step mode. Harmonic spectra of stator and rotor currents are compared in six-step mode of operation. Pulsating torque is evaluated at various depths of modulation during overmodulation.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) due to its multifunctional characteristics has been presented as a flame sensor by combining both radiation and chemical sensitivity. Chemical functionalization enhances the sensitivity of CNT sensor toward any chemical modifications that are induced by the flame. Response of the sensor is revealed to be dependent on the measurement direction (longitudinal and transverse) as well as the radiation intensity. A nonlinear relation between the sensitivity and its distance from the source is used to calibrate the intensity of the flame. The present method allows a simpler approach for the flame detection by utilizing a calibration scheme to operate at any particular bias current and tune its sensitivity with respect to any working distance at a particular bias current. We report on the rectification properties from a single ZnS nanorod measured using the UHV-SPM technique. The rectification behavior is evidenced from the current-voltage characteristics measured on a single ZnS nanorod. We propose a tunneling mechanism where the direct tunneling mechanism is dominant at lower applied bias voltages followed by resonant tunneling through discrete energy levels of the nanorod. A further increase in the bias voltage changes the tunneling mechanism to the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling regime enabling rectification behavior. Realizing rectification from a single ZnS nanorod may provide a means of realizing a single nanorod based miniaturized device.

Long range, continuous flow of liquid metals occurs upon application of an electric current. Here, we report experimental results elucidating the mechanism of current-induced liquid metal flow, and its dependence on substrate surface condition. It is shown that the observed flow is diffusion-controlled, with the flow-rate depending linearly on applied current density, indicating that it is driven by electromigration. The effective charge number for liquid electromigration, Z*, of several pure metals, such as Al, Bi, Ga, Sn, and Pb, were deduced from the experimental results and were found to be close to the elemental valency. With the exception of liquid Pb, Z* for all liquid metals tested in this study were positive, indicating that: (i) electron wind contributes much less to Z* in liquid metals than in solids, and (ii) with a few exceptions, liquid metals generally flow in the direction of the electric current. On smooth substrates which are wetted well by the liquid metal, flow occurs in a thin, continuous stream. On rough surfaces which are poorly wetted, on the other hand, discrete beads of liquid form, with mass transport between adjacent beads occurring by surface diffusion on the substrate. A rationale for the role of substrate roughness in fostering this observed transition in flow mechanism is presented. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

The following paper presents a Powerline Communication (PLC) Method for Single Phase interfaced inverters in domestic microgrids. The PLC method is based on the injection of a repeating sequence of a specific harmonic, which is then modulated on the fundamental component of the grid current supplied by the inverters to the microgrid. The power flow and information exchange are simultaneously accomplished by the grid interacting inverters based on current programmed vector control, hence there is no need for dedicated hardware. Simulation results have been shown for inter-inverter communication under different operating conditions to propose the viability. These simulations have been experimentally validated and the corresponding results have also been presented in the paper.

A nearly constant switching frequency current hysteresis controller for a 2-level inverter fed induction motor drive is proposed in this paper: The salient features of this controller are fast dynamics for the current, inherent protection against overloads and less switching frequency variation. The large variation of switching frequency as in the conventional hysteresis controller is avoided by defining a current-error boundary which is obtained from the current-error trajectory of the standard space vector PWM. The current-error boundary is computed at every sampling interval based on the induction machine parameters and from the estimated fundamental stator voltage. The stator currents are always monitored and when the current-error exceeds the boundary, voltage space vector is switched to reduce the current-error. The proposed boundary computation algorithm is applicable in linear and over-modulation region and it is simple to implement in any standard digital signal processor: Detailed experimental verification is done using a 7.5 kW induction motor and the results are given to show the performance of the drive at various operating conditions and validate the proposed advantages.

PurposeTo extend the previously developed temporally constrained reconstruction (TCR) algorithm to allow for real-time availability of three-dimensional (3D) temperature maps capable of monitoring MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound applications. MethodsA real-time TCR (RT-TCR) algorithm is developed that only uses current and previously acquired undersampled k-space data from a 3D segmented EPI pulse sequence, with the image reconstruction done in a graphics processing unit implementation to overcome computation burden. Simulated and experimental data sets of HIFU heating are used to evaluate the performance of the RT-TCR algorithm. ResultsThe simulation studies demonstrate that the RT-TCR algorithm has subsecond reconstruction time and can accurately measure HIFU-induced temperature rises of 20 degrees C in 15 s for 3D volumes of 16 slices (RMSE = 0.1 degrees C), 24 slices (RMSE = 0.2 degrees C), and 32 slices (RMSE = 0.3 degrees C). Experimental results in ex vivo porcine muscle demonstrate that the RT-TCR approach can reconstruct temperature maps with 192 x 162 x 66 mm 3D volume coverage, 1.5 x 1.5 x 3.0 mm resolution, and 1.2-s scan time with an accuracy of 0.5 degrees C. ConclusionThe RT-TCR algorithm offers an approach to obtaining large coverage 3D temperature maps in real-time for monitoring MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound treatments. We develop iterative diffraction tomography algorithms, which are similar to the distorted Born algorithms, for inverting scattered intensity data. Within the Born approximation, the unknown scattered field is expressed as a multiplicative perturbation to the incident field. With this, the forward equation becomes stable, which helps us compute nearly oscillation-free solutions that have immediate bearing on the accuracy of the Jacobian computed for use in a deterministic Gauss-Newton (GN) reconstruction. However, since the data are inherently noisy and the sensitivity of measurement to refractive index away from the detectors is poor, we report a derivative-free evolutionary stochastic scheme, providing strictly additive updates in order to bridge the measurement-prediction misfit, to arrive at the refractive index distribution from intensity transport data. The superiority of the stochastic algorithm over the GN scheme for similar settings is demonstrated by the reconstruction of the refractive index profile from simulated and experimentally acquired intensity data. Multi-site damage need to be addressed and evaluated in order to assess the integrity of aging aircraft structures. One of the problems recognized in the recent times is the effect of interaction between two or more cracks in the close neighborhood in such structures. The present paper deals with such a problem and presents numerical estimates of stress intensity factors at a crack tip in an un-stiffened curved panel with a secondary crack in the vicinity of a primary crack. The results are presented in the form of design charts. These results should be useful in evaluation in the damage tolerance evaluation of aircraft structures with multi-site damage. A space vector-based hysteresis current controller for any general n-level three phase inverter fed induction motor drive is proposed in this study. It offers fast dynamics, inherent overload protection and low harmonic distortion for the phase voltages and currents. The controller performs online current error boundary calculations and a nearly constant switching frequency is obtained throughout the linear modulation range. The proposed scheme uses only the adjacent voltage vectors of the present sector, similar to space vector pulse-width modulation and exhibits fast dynamic behaviour under different transient conditions. The steps involved in the boundary calculation include the estimation of phase voltages from the current ripple, computation of switching time and voltage error vectors. Experimental results are given to show the performance of the drive at various speeds, effect of sudden change of the load, acceleration, speed reversal and validate the proposed advantages.

In this paper, a current error space vector (CESV) based hysteresis controller for a 12-sided polygonal voltage space vector inverter fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed, for the first time. An open-end winding configuration is used for the induction motor. The proposed controller uses parabolic boundary with generalized vector selection logic for all sectors. The drive scheme is first studied with a space vector based PWM (SVPWM) control and from this the current error space phasor boundary is obtained. This current error space phasor boundary is approximated with four parabolas and then the system is run with space phasor based hysteresis PWM controller by limiting the CESV within the parabolic boundary. The proposed controller has increased modulation range, absence of 5th and 7th order harmonics for the entire modulation range, nearly constant switching frequency, fast dynamic response with smooth transition to the over modulation region and a simple controller implementation.

The photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO is shown to be dependent on the excitation intensity (EI) of the laser, and the substantial shift observed in the band to band transition is attributed to the heating effect. In order to understand this phenomenon in detail, we investigate the EI dependent PL of various ZnO samples systematically from liquid nitrogen (LN) to room temperature by varying the laser power. Some of the samples exhibit substantial red shift in the band to band transition with increasing EI even in LN environment, negligible effect is observed for others. Hence, our results strongly suggest that the EI dependent PL is not a characteristic of all ZnO samples. This indicates that laser-induced heating effect is not the dominant factor that governs the shifts in the PL spectra. Rather, the defect level excitation accounts for such observation. Application of high electric-field between two points in a thin metallic film results in liquefaction and subsequent flow of the liquid-film from one electrode to another in a radially symmetric fashion. Here, we report the transition of the flow kinetics driven by the liquid film thickness varying from 3 to 100 nm. The mechanism of the flow behavior is observed to be independent of the film thickness; however, the kinetics of the flow depends on the film thickness and the applied voltage. An analytical model, incorporating viscosity and varying electrical resistivity with film thickness, is developed to explain the experimental observations. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
