The details of the first total synthesis of a natural thapsane lg containing three contiguous quaternary carbon atoms, starting from cyclogeraniol (9) '5 described. The Claisen rearrangement of 9 with methoxypropene in the presence of a catalytic amount of propionic acid produced ketone 10. Rhodium acetate-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation of a-diazo-&keto ester 12, obtained from 10 via 8-keto ester 8, furnished cyclopropyl keto ester 7. Lithium in liquid ammonia reductive cleavage of cyclopropyl compound 7 gave a 1:l mixture of hydrindanone 6 and keto1 13. Wittig methylenation of 6 furnished ester 21. Epoxidation of 21, followed by BF3-OEt2-catalyzed rearrangement of epoxide 23 afforded hemiacetal 25. Treatment of hemiacetal 25 with triethylsilane in trifluoroacetic acid furnished lactone 22, a degradation product of various thapsanes. Finally, DIBAH reduction of lactone 22 generated the thapsane

Nanostructured carbon nitride films were prepared by pyrolysis assisted chemical vapour deposition(CVD). A two zone furnace with a temperature profile having a uniform temperature over a length of 20 cm length has been designed and developed. The precursor Azabenzimidazole was taken in a quartz tube and evaporated at 400 degrees C. The dense vapours enter the pyrolysis zone kept at a desired temperature and deposit on the quartz substrates. The FTIR spectrum of the prepared samples shows peaks at 1272 cm(-1) (C-N stretching) and 1600 cm(-1) (C=N) confirms the bonding of nitrogen with carbon. Raman D and G peaks, are observed at 1360 cm(-1) and 1576 cm(-1) respectively. XPS core level spectra of C 1s and N 1s show the formation of pi bonding between carbon and nitrogen atoms. The size of the nano crystals estimated from the SEM images and XRD is similar to 100 nm. In some regions of the sample a maximum of 57 atom % of nitrogen has been observed.

Bispropargyl sulfones equipped with aromatic rings of dissimilar nature were synthesized. Under basic conditions, these sulfones isomerized to the bisallenic sulfones, creating a competitive scenario between two alternate Garratt-Braverman (GB) cyclization pathways. The observed product distribution ruled out the involvement of any ionic intermediate and supported the diradical mechanism with greater involvement of the electron-rich aromatic ring via the more nucleophilic radical. DFT-based calculations supported the diradical mechanism along with the observed selectivity.

A short access to homocalystegine analogues silylated at C7 is described. The synthesis involves the desymmetrization of a (phenyldimethylsilyl)methylcycloheptatriene using osmium-mediated dihydroxylation, followed by the diol protection and a cycloaddition involving the remaining diene moiety and an acylnitroso reagent. Additions of the osmium and acylnitroso reagents were shown, through X-ray diffraction studies of the resulting major isomers, to occur anti and syn, respectively, relative to the SiCH2 substituent. N-O bond cleavage on the resulting cycloadduct then produces the aminopolyol having a silylmethyl substituent. Oxidation of the C-Si bond also afforded an access to unusual amino-heptitols having five contiguous stereogenic centers. In the course of this work, we finally observed a unusual rearrangement taking place on cycloheptanone 18 substituted by two acetyl groups and a neighboring Boc-protected amine. A profound reorganization of the substituents on the seven-membered ring effectively took place under acidic conditions (TFA) leading to the thermodynamically more stable homocalystegine-type compound., DFT calculations of the conformational energy of isomeric silyl homocalystegines indicated that the product observed upon the acid-mediated rearrangement was the most stable of a series of analogues with various distributions of substituents along the seven-membered ring backbone. A tentative mechanism is proposed to rationalize the acetate migrations and inversions of the stereochemistry at various stereocenters.

Queens of the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata appear to maintain reproductive monopoly through pheromone rather than through physical aggression. Upon queen removal, one of the workers (potential queen, PQ) becomes extremely aggressive but drops her aggression immediately upon returning the queen. If the queen is not returned, the PQ gradually drops her aggression and becomes the next queen of the colony. In a previous study, the Dufour's gland was found to be at least one source of the queen pheromone. Queen-worker classification could be done with 100% accuracy in a discriminant analysis, using the compositions of their respective Dufour's glands. In a bioassay, the PQ dropped her aggression in response to the queen's Dufour's gland macerate, suggesting that the queen's Dufour's gland contents mimicked the queen herself. In the present study, we found that the PQ also dropped her aggression in response to the macerate of a foreign queen's Dufour's gland. This suggests that the queen signal is perceived across colonies. This also suggests that the Dufour's gland in R. marginata does not contain information about nestmateship, because queens are attacked when introduced into foreign colonies, and hence PQ is not expected to reduce her aggression in response to a foreign queen's signal. The latter conclusion is especially significant because the Dufour's gland chemicals are adequate to classify individuals correctly not only on the basis of fertility status (queen versus worker) but also according to their colony membership, using discriminant analysis. This leads to the additional conclusion (and precaution) that the ability to statistically discriminate organisms using their chemical profiles does not necessarily imply that the organisms themselves can make such discrimination. MnO/C composite coatings were grown by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition process on ceramic alumina in argon ambient. Characterization by various techniques confirms that these coatings are homogeneous composites comprising nanometer-sized MnO particles embedded in a matrix of nanometer-sized graphite. Components of the MnO/C composite coating crystalline disordered, but are electrically quite conductive. Resistance vs. temperature measurements show that coating resistance increases exponentially from a few hundred ohms at room temperature to a few megaohms at 30 K. Logarithmic plots of reduced activation energy vs. temperature show that the coating material undergoes a metal-insulator transition. The reduced activation energy exponent for the film under zero magnetic field was 2.1, which is unusually high, implying that conduction is suppressed at much faster rate than the Mott or the Efros-Shklovskii hopping mechanism. Magnetoconductance us. magnetic field plots obtained at various temperatures show a high magnetoconductance (similar to 28.8%) at 100 K, which is unusually large for a disordered system, wherein magnetoresistance is attributed typically to weak localization. A plausible explanation for the unusual behavior observed in the carbonaceous disordered composite material is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chemical methods of synthesis play a crucial role in designing and discovering new and novel materials and in providing less cumbersome methods for preparing known materials. Chemical methods also enable the synthesis of metastable materials which are otherwise difficult to prepare. In this presentation, the various innovative chemical methods of synthesising oxide materials will be briefly reviewed with emphasis on soft-chemical routes. Electrochemical synthesis, ion-exchange method, alkali-flux method and some of the interaction reactions will be highlighted, besides topochemical aspects of solid state synthesis. Cuprate superconductors as well as intergrowth structures will also be examined.

Nanostructured carbon nitride films were prepared by pyrolysis assisted chemical vapour deposition. A two zone furnace with a uniform temperature over a length of 20 cm in both the zones was built. The precursor Azabenzimidazole (C6H5N3) taken in a quartz tube was evaporated at zone A and pyrolysed at zone B at a temperature of 800 degrees C. The FTIR spectrum of the prepared sample shows peaks at 1272 cm(-1) and 1591 cm(-1) corresponding to C-N stretching and C=N respectively, which confirms the bonding of nitrogen with carbon. Raman D and G peaks are observed at 1357 cm(-1) and 1560 cm(-1) respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows the formation of pi bonding between carbon and nitrogen atoms. These observations along with XRD analysis show the formation of crystallites of alpha-C3N4 and beta-C3N4 in the background of graphitic C3N4. The size of the nanocrystals estimated from the SEM images is similar to 100 nm.

The absorption spectrum in the visible range and the, ESR spectrum of vanadyl sulfate were lost on addition of diperoxovanadate. The V-51-NMR spectra revealed that diperoxovanadate was reduced to vanadate and its oligomers. With excess vanadyl, tetrameric vanadate was found to be the major product, During this reaction oxygen was released into the medium. The oxygen-release reaction was inhibited by a variety of organic ligands-imidazole, benzoate, formate, mannitol, ethanol, Tris, DMPO, malate, and asparagine. An oxygen-consuming reaction emerged at high concentrations of some of these compounds, e.g. benzoate and ethanol. Using DMPO as the spin-trap, an oxygen-radical species with a 1:2:2:1 type of ESR spectrum was detected in the reaction mixtures resulting from vanadyl oxidation by diperoxovanadate which was unaffected by addition of catalase or ethanol. The results showed that secondary oxygen-exchange reactions occur which depend on and utilize the intermediates in the primary reaction during diperoxovanadate-dependent oxidation of vanadyl sulfate.

Precipitation in small droplets involving emulsions, microemulsions or vesicles is important for Producing multicomponent ceramics and nanoparticles. Because of the random nature of nucleation and the small number of particles in a droplet, the use of a deterministic population balance equation for predicting the number density of particles may lead to erroneous results even for evaluating the mean behavior of such systems. A comparison between the predictions made through stochastic simulation and deterministic population balance involving small droplets has been made for two simple systems, one involving crystallization and the other a single-component precipitation. The two approaches have been found to yield quite different results under a variety of conditions. Contrary to expectation, the smallness of the population alone does not cause these deviations. Thus, if fluctuation in supersaturation is negligible, the population balance and simulation predictions concur. However, for large fluctuations in supersaturation, the predictions differ significantly, indicating the need to take the stochastic nature of the phenomenon into account. This paper describes the stochastic treatment of populations, which involves a sequence of so-called product density equations and forms an appropriate framework for handling small systems.

The reaction between Fe foil and a disc of ilmenite solid solution (Co-0.48 Ni-0.52) TiO3 was studied at 1273 K. At the metal/oxide interface, the displacement reaction, Fe + (Co,Mg)TiO3 = Co + (Fe,Mg)TiO3 occurs, resulting in an ilmenite solid solution containing three divalent cations. Ferrous ions diffuse into the oxide solid solution and cause the precipitation of Co-Fe alloy as discrete particles inside the oxide matrix. The morphology of the product layer was characterized by SEM. Only two phases, alloy and ilmenite, were detected in the reaction zone. This suggests that the local flux condition imposed by ilmenite stoichiometry (Co + Fe + Mg):Ti = 1:1] was satisfied during the reactive diffusion: (J(Co) + J(Fe) + J(Mg)) = J(Ti). The composition of the alloy and the oxide was determined using EPMA as a function of distance in the direction of diffusion. Although Mg does not participate in the displacement reaction, its composition in the ilmenite phase was found to be position dependent inside the reaction zone. The up-hill diffusion of inert Mg is caused by the development of chemical potential gradients as a result of displacement reaction. The evolution of composition gradients inside the reaction zone and the diffusion path in a ternary composition diagram of the system CoTiO3-FeTiO3-MgTiO3 are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The development of new synthetic strategies to obtain mono-disperse metal nanoparticles on large scales is an attractive prospect in the context of sustainability. Recently, amine-boranes, the classical Lewis acid-base adducts, have been employed as reducing agents for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles. They offer several advantages over the traditional reducing agents like the borohydrides; for example, a much better control of the rate of reduction and, hence, the particle size distribution of metal nanoparticles; diversity in their reducing abilities by varying the substituents on the nitrogen atom; and solubility in various protic and aprotic solvents. Amine-boranes have not only been used successfully as reducing agents in solution but also in solventless conditions, in which along with the reduction of the metal precursor, they undergo in situ transformation to afford the stabilizing agent for the generated metal nanoparticles, thereby bringing about atom economy as well. The use of amine boranes for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles has experienced an explosive growth in a very short period of time. In this Minireview, recent progress on the use of amine boranes for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, with a focus towards the development of pathways for sustainability, is discussed.
