On lowering the oxygen potential, the tetragonal phase of YBa2Cu3O7−δ was found to decompose into a mixture of Y2BaCuO5, BaCuO2 and BaCu2O2 in the temperature range 773–1173 K. The 123 compound was contained in a closed crucible of yttria-stabilized zirconia in the temperature range 773–1073 K. Oxygen was removed in small increments by coulometric titration through the solid electrolyte crucible at constant temperature. The oxygen potential was calculated from the open circuit e.m.f. of the solid state cell after successive titrations. Pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa was used as the reference electrode. The decomposition of the 123 compound manifested as a plateau in oxygen potential. The decomposition products were identified by X-ray diffraction. At temperatures above 1073 K there was some evidence of reaction between the 123 compound, solid electrolyte crucible and platinum. For measurements above 1073 K, the 123 compound was contained in a magnesia crucible placed in a closed outer silica tube. The oxygen potential in the gas phase above the 123 compound was controlled and measured by a solid state cell based on yttria-stabilized zirconia which served both as a pump and sensor. The lower oxygen potential limit for the stability of the 123 compound is given by View the MathML source The oxygen non-stoichiometric parameter δ for the 123 compound has a value of 0.98 (View the MathML source) at dissociation.

Uranium-Plutonium mixed carbide with a Pu/(U+Pu) ratio of 0.55 is to be used as the fuel in the Fast Breeder Test Reaotor - (PBTRj at Kalpakkam, India. carbur ization of the stainlese steel clad by this fuel is determined by its carbon potential. - i. Because the carbon potential of this fuel composition is not 1 available in the literature, it was meadured by the methanehydrogen gas equilibration technique. The sample was equilibrated with purified hydrogen and the equilibrium methane-tohydrogen ratio in the gas phase was measured with a flame ionization detector. The carbon potential of the ThC-ThCz as well as Mo-Mo2C system, whiah is an important binary in the aotinide-fission product-carbon systems, were also measured by this technique, in the temperature range 973 K to 1173 K. The data for ! the Mo-MozC system are in agreement with values reported in the literature. The results for the ThC-ThC2 system are different from estimated values with large unaertainty limits given in the literature. The data on (U,Pu) mixed carbide indicates possibility of stainlesss steel clad attack under isothermal equilibrium conditions.

We show that a fluid under strong spatially periodic confinement displays a glass transition within mode-coupling theory at a much lower density than the corresponding bulk system. We use fluctuating hydrodynamics, with confinement imposed through a periodic potential whose wavelength plays an important role in our treatment. To make the calculation tractable we implement a detailed calculation in one dimension. Although we do not expect simple 1d fluids to show a glass transition, our results are indicative of the behavior expected in higher dimensions. In a certain region of parameter space we observe a three-step relaxation reported recently in computer simulations [S. H. Krishnan, Ph.D. thesis, Indian Institute of Science (2005); Kim et al., Eur. Phys. J. Special Topics 189, 135 (2010)] and a glass-glass transition. We compare our results to those of Krakoviack [Phys. Rev. E 75, 031503 (2007)] and Lang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 125701 (2010)].

Chemotherapy is a very important therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment. The failure of conventional and molecularly targeted chemotherapeutic regimes for the treatment of pancreatic cancer highlights a desperate need for novel therapeutic interventions. Chemotherapy often fails to eliminate all tumor cells because of intrinsic or acquired drug resistance, which is the most common cause of tumor recurrence. Overexpression of RAD51 protein, a key player in DNA repair/recombination has been observed in many cancer cells and its hyperexpression is implicated in drug resistance. Recent studies suggest that RAD51 overexpression contributes to the development, progression and drug resistance of pancreatic cancer cells. Here we provide a brief overview of the available pieces of evidence in support of the role of RAD51 in pancreatic tumorigenesis and drug resistance, and hypothesize that RAD51 could serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. We discuss the possible involvement of RAD51 in the drug resistance associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition and with cancer stem cells. Finally, we speculate that targeting RAD51 in pancreatic cancer cells may be a novel approach for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Prebreakdown currents in a coaxial cylindrical geometry in nitrogen have been measured with and without a crossed magnetic field. The range of parameters used in the investigation are 2.6 ÿ p ÿ 14.5 torr, 50 ÿ (E/p) ÿ 420 V cm-1 torr-1, and 43.0 ÿ H/p ÿ 1185 Oe torr-1 (p is the pressure, E is the electric field, and H is the magnetic field). The initial photoelectric current is obtained by allowing photons produced in an auxiliary glow discharge to strike the cathode. Ions and electrons produced in the auxiliary discharge are prevented from reaching the main gap by suitable shielding. By modifying the Rice equation for back diffusion, the measured ionization current multiplication without a crossed magnetic field is compared with the multiplication predicted by the Townsend growth equation for nonuniform electric fields. It is observed that over the range of 50 Ã¿ (E/P)max Ã¿ 250 [(E/P)max is the value of E/p at the central electrode of the coaxial system] measured and calculated multiplication of current agree with each other. With a crossed magnetic field the prebreakdown currents have been measured and compared with the theoretically calculated currents using the equivalent pressure concept. Agreement between the calculated and measured currents is not satisfactory, and this has been attributed more to the uncertainty in the collision frequency data available than nonuniformity of the electric field. Sparking potentials have been measured with and without a crossed magnetic field.

This paper advocates the use of active current and potential transducers for proper utilisation of fast protective relays. The active current transducer faithfully transforms the primary current containing a slowly decaying d.c. component, thereby providing a good transient response. The active potential transducer helps in fast extinction of ferroresonance oscillations. Results oflaboratory investigations are also presented.

Introduction: Extensive studies have gone into understanding the differential role of the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system in the context of various diseases. Receptor-ligand interactions are responsible for mediating cross-talk between the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system, so as to effectively counter the pathogenic challenge. While TLRs remain the best studied innate immune receptor, many other receptor families are now coming to the fore for their role in various pathologies. Research has focused on the discovery of novel agonists and antagonists for these receptors as potential therapeutics. Areas covered: In this review, we present an overview of the recent advances in the discovery of drugs targeting important receptors such as G-protein coupled receptors, TRAIL-R, IL-1 beta receptor, PPARs, etc. All these receptors play a critical role in the modulation of the immune response. We focus on the recent paradigms applied for the generation of specific and effective therapeutics for these receptors and their status in clinical trials. Expert opinion: Non-specific activation by antagonist/agonist is a difficult problem to dodge. This demands innovation in ligand designing with the use of strategies such as allosterism and dual-specific ligands. Rigorous preclinical and clinical studies are required in transforming a compound to a therapeutic.

L-PGlu-(2-proPyl)-L-His-L-ProNH(2) (NP-647) is a CNS active thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analog with potential application in various CNS disorders including seizures. In the present study, mechanism of action for protective effect of NP-647 was explored by studying role of NP-647 on epileptiform activity and sodium channels by using patch-clamp methods. Epileptiform activity was induced in subicular pyramidal neurons of hippocampal slice of rat by perfusing 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) containing Mg(+2)-free normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid (nACSF). Increase in mean firing frequency was observed after perfusion of 4-AP and zero Mg(+2) (2.10+/-0.47 Hz) as compared with nACSF (0.12+/-0.08 Hz). A significant decrease in mean firing frequency (0.61+/-0.22 Hz), mean frequency of epileptiform events (0.03+/-0.02 Hz vs. 0.22+/-0.05 Hz of 4-AP+0 Mg), and average number of action potentials in paroxysmal depolarization shift-burst (2.54+/-1.21 Hz vs. 8.16+/-0.88 Hz of 4-AP +0 Mg) was observed. A significant reduction in peak dV/dt (246+/-19 mV ms(-1) vs. 297 18 mV ms-1 of 4-AP+0 Mg) and increase (1.332+/-0.018 ms vs. 1.292+/-0.019 ms of 4-AP+0 Mg) in time required to reach maximum depolarization were observed indicating role of sodium channels. Concentration-dependent depression of sodium current was observed after exposure to dorsal root ganglion neurons to NP-647. NP-647 at different concentrations (1, 3, and 10 mu M) depressed sodium current (15+/-0.5%, 50+/-2.6%, and 75+/-0.7%, respectively). However, NP-647 did not show change in the peak sodium current in CNa18 cells. Results of present study demonstrated potential of NP-647 in the inhibition of epileptiform activity by inhibiting sodium channels indirectly. (C) 2011 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The boronic acid (pS)-1,2-NpFcB(OH)(2) (1) was obtained by treatment of the lithiated species (pS)-1,2-NpFcLi with B(O(i)Pr)(3), followed by acidic workup; subsequent dehydration gave the enantiomerically pure boroxine [(pS)-1,2-NpFcBO](3) (2) in 49% isolated yield. Multinuclear and 2D NMR spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis served to confirm the structure of 2. In the solid-state structure, all three of the naphthyl groups point in one direction and all of the ferrocenyl moieties are placed on the opposite face of the boroxine ring, which is also the preferred conformation in solution according to a (1)H, (1)H-NOESY experiment. Cyclic voltammetry revealed three separate reversible oxidation events, which suggests significant communication between the ferrocenyl moieties. These redox processes experience a cathodic shift upon addition of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as a Lewis base. The six-membered ring is opened upon treatment with hot CHCl(3)/MeOH to form the methoxy species (pS)-1,2-NpFcB(OH)(OMe) (3), which can be converted back to the cycle 2 by dissolution in wet CHCl(3), followed by column chromatography on silica gel.

Abstract | The importance of well-defined inorganic porous nanostructured materials in the context of biotechnological applications such as drug delivery and biomolecular sensing is reviewed here in detail. Under optimized conditions, the confinement of “bio”-relevant molecules such as pharmaceutical drugs, enzymes or proteins inside such inorganic nanostructures may be remarkably beneficial leading to enhanced molecular stability, activity and performance. From the point of view of basic research, molecular confinement inside nanostructures poses several formidable and intriguing problems of statistical mechanics at the mesoscopic scale. The theoretical comprehension of such non-trivial issues will not only aid in the interpretation of observed phenomena but also help in designing better inorganic nanostructured materials for biotechnological applications.

Protein-protein interactions are crucial for many biological functions. The redox interactome encompasses numerous weak transient interactions in which thioredoxin plays a central role. Proteomic studies have shown that thioredoxin binds to numerous proteins belonging to various cellular processes, including energy metabolism. Thioredoxin has cross talk with other redox mechanisms involving glutathionylation and has functional overlap with glutaredoxin in deglutathionylation reactions. In this study, we have explored the structural and biochemical interactions of thioredoxin with the glycolytic enzyme, triosephosphate isomerase. Nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shift mapping methods and molecular dynamics-based docking have been applied in deriving a structural model of the thioredoxin-triosephosphate isomerase complex. The spatial proximity of active site cysteine residues of thioredoxin to reactive thiol groups on triosephosphate isomerase provides a direct link to the observed deglutathionylation of cysteine 217 in triosephosphate isomerase, thereby reversing the inhibitory effect of S-glutathionylation of triosephosphate isomerase.

We develop a framework for understanding the difference between strong and fragile behavior in the dynamics of glass-forming liquids from the properties of the potential energy landscape. Our approach is based on a master equation description of the activated jump dynamics among the local minima of the potential energy (the so-called inherent structures) that characterize the potential energy landscape of the system. We study the dynamics of a small atomic cluster using this description as well as molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate the usefulness of our approach for this system. Many of the remarkable features of the complex dynamics of glassy systems emerge from the activated dynamics in the potential energy landscape of the atomic cluster. The dynamics of the system exhibits typical characteristics of a strong supercooled liquid when the system is allowed to explore the full configuration space. This behavior arises because the dynamics is dominated by a few lowest-lying minima of the potential energy and the potential energy barriers between these minima. When the system is constrained to explore only a limited region of the potential energy landscape that excludes the basins of attraction of a few lowest-lying minima, the dynamics is found to exhibit the characteristics of a fragile liquid.
