An analytical solution of the heat transfer problem with viscous dissipation for non-Newtonian fluids with power-law model in the thermal entrance region of a circular pipe and two parallel plates under constant heat flux conditions is obtained using eigenvalue approach by suitably replacing one of the boundary conditions by total energy balance equation. Analytical expressions for the wall and the bulk temperatures and the local Nusselt number are presented. The results are in close agreement with those obtained by implicit finite-difference scheme. It is found that the role of viscous dissipation on heat transfer is completely different for heating and cooling conditions at the wall. The results for the case of cooling at the wall are of interest in the design of the oil pipe line.

The in vitro development of hamster preimplantation embryos is supported by non-glucose energy substrates. To investigate the importance of embryonic metabolism, influence of succinate and malate on the development of hamster 8-cell embryos to blastocysts was examined using a chemically defined protein-free modified hamster embryo culture medium-2 (HECM-2m). There was a dose-dependent influence of succinate on blastocyst development; 0.5 mM succinate was optimal (85.1% ± 3.9 vs. 54.5% ± 3.5). In succinate-supplemented HECM-2m, blastocyst development was reduced by omission of lactate (68.5% ± 7.2), but not pyruvate (85.8% ± 6.2) or glutamine (84.1% ± 2.1). Succinate along with either glutamine or lactate or pyruvate poorly supported blastocyst development (28%-58%). Malate also stimulated blastocyst development; 0.01 mM malate was optimal (86.3% ± 2.8). Supplementation of both succinate and malate to HECM-2m supported maximal (100%) blastocyst development, which was inhibited 4-fold by the addition of glucose/phosphate. The mean cell numbers (MCN) of blastocysts cultured in succinate-supplemented HECM-2m was higher (28.3 ± 1.1) than it was for those cultured in the absence of glutamine or pyruvate (range 20-24). The MCN was the highest (33.4 ± 1.6) for blastocysts cultured in succinate-malate-supplemented HECM-2m followed by those in succinate (28.3 ± 1.1) or malate (24.7 ± 0.5) supplemented HECM-2m. Embryo transfer experiments showed that 29.8% (±4.5) of transferred blastocysts cultured in succinate-malate-supplemented HECM-2m produced live births, similar (P > 0.1) to the control transfers of freshly recovered 8-cells (33.5% ± 2.0) or blastocysts (28.9% ± 3.0). These data show that supplementation of succinate and malate to HECM-2m supports 100% development of hamster 8-cell embryos to high quality viable blastocysts and that non-glucose oxidizable energy substrates are the most preferred components in hamster embryo culture medium. The rates of NADH oxidation in presence of xanthine oxidase increase to a small and variable extent on addition of high concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase and other dehydrogenases. This heat stable activity is similar to polyvanadate-stimulation with respect to pH profile and SOD sensitivity. Isocitric dehydrogenase (NADP-specific) showed heat labile, SOD-sensitive polyvanadate-stimulated NADH oxidation activity. Polyvanadate-stimulated SOD-sensitive NADH oxidation was also found to occur with riboflavin, FMN and FAD in presence of a non-specific protein, BSA, suggesting that some flavoproteins may possess this activity.

The effect of vectored mass transfer on the flow and heat transfer of the steady laminar incompressible nonsimilar boundary layer with viscous dissipation for two-dimensional and axisymmetric porous bodies with pressure gradient has been studied. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The computations have been carried out for a cylinder and a sphere. The skin friction is strongly influenced by the vectored mass transfer, and the heat transfer both by the vectored mass transfer and dissipation parameter. It is observed that the vectored suction tends to delay the separation whereas the effect of the vectored injection is just the reverse. Our results agree with those of the local nonsimilarity, difference-differential and asymptotic methods but not with those of the local similarity method.

The inßuence of the sperm motility stimulant pentoxifylline (PF) on preimplantation embryo development in hamsters was evaluated. Eight-cell embryos were cultured in hamster embryo culture medium (HECM)-2, with or without PF (0· 0233·6 mM). There was 90%, 37% and 29% inhibition of blastocyst development by 3·6 (used for human sperm), 0·9 and 0 ·45 mM PF, respectively. However, 23 µM PF (exposed to hamster oocytes during IVF) signicantly (P < 0·05) improved blastocyst development (63· 6% v. 51· 8%); morulae development was, however, not curtailed by 0·45 mM or 0·9 mM PF (51·8%±6·0 or 50·5%±11·3, respectively). Post-implantation viability of PF-treated embryos was assessed by embryo transfer; 43% of 80 PF-treated embryos implanted compared with 40% of 79 control embryos. Of the 9 recipients, 6 females delivered pups (19, i.e. 16% of transferred embryos or 53% of implanted embryos). These data show that in hamsters, continuous presence of PF at 0·45-3·6 mM is detrimental to 8-cell embryo development whereas 23 µM PF improves the development of embryos to viable blastocysts which produce live offspring.

Checkpoint-1 kinase plays an important role in the G(2)M cell cycle control, therefore its inhibition by small molecules is of great therapeutic interest in oncology. In this paper, we have reported the virtual screening of an in-house library of 2499 pyranopyrazole derivatives against the ATP-binding site of Chk1 kinase using Glide 5.0 program, which resulted in six hits. All these ligands were docked into the site forming most crucial interactions with Cys87, Glu91 and Leu15 residues. From the observed results these ligands are suggested to be potent inhibitors of Chk1 kinase with sufficient scope for further elaboration.

Deviations from the usual R (-6) dependence of the rate of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) on the distance between the donor and the acceptor have been a common scenario in the recent times. In this paper, we present a critical analysis of the distance dependence of FRET, and try to illustrate the non R (-6) type behaviour of the rate for the case of transfer from a localized electronic excitation on the donor, a dye molecule to three different energy acceptors with delocalized electronic excitations namely, graphene,two-dimensional semiconducting sheet and the case of such a semiconducting sheet rolled to obtain a nanotube. We use simple analytic models to understand the distance dependence in each case.

A mathematical model is developed to simulate oxygen consumption, heat generation and cell growth in solid state fermentation (SSF). The fungal growth on the solid substrate particles results in the increase of the cell film thickness around the particles. The model incorporates this increase in the biofilm size which leads to decrease in the porosity of the substrate bed and diffusivity of oxygen in the bed. The model also takes into account the effect of steric hindrance limitations in SSF. The growth of cells around single particle and resulting expansion of biofilm around the particle is analyzed for simplified zero and first order oxygen consumption kinetics. Under conditions of zero order kinetics, the model predicts upper limit on cell density. The model simulations for packed bed of solid particles in tray bioreactor show distinct limitations on growth due to simultaneous heat and mass transport phenomena accompanying solid state fermentation process. The extent of limitation due to heat and/or mass transport phenomena is analyzed during different stages of fermentation. It is expected that the model will lead to better understanding of the transport processes in SSF, and therefore, will assist in optimal design of bioreactors for SSF.

Three inorganic-organic hybrid framework cadmium thiosulfate phases have been investigated for adsorption and photodegradation of organic dye molecules. Different classes of organic dyes, viz., triaryl methane, azo, xanthene, anthraquinone, have been studied. The anionic dyes with sulfonate groups appear to readily adsorb on the cadmium thiosulfate compounds in an aqueous medium. The adsorption of the dye molecules, however, does not create any structural changes on the cadmium thiosulfate compounds, though weak electronic interactions have been observed. The adsorbed dyes have been desorbed partially in an alcoholic medium, suggesting possible applications in scavenging specific anionic dyes from the aqueous solutions. Langmuir adsorption/desorption isotherms have been used to model this behavior. UV-assisted (lambda(max) = 365 nm) photocatalytic decomposition studies on the cationic dyes indicate reasonable activity comparable with that of Degussa P-25 (TiO2) catalyst. Sunlight assisted photocatalyti studies have been carried out in detail employing hybrid framework compounds. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics model, employed to follow the degradation profile of the organic dyes, indicates that the photocatalytic degradation follows the order: triaryl methane > azo > xanthene.

This paper investigates numerically the heat transfer characteristics of confined slot jet impingement on a pin-fin heat sink. A variety of pin-fin heat sinks is investigated, and the resulting enhancement of heat transfer studied. The distribution of heat transfer coefficient on the top surface of the base plate and that along the fin height are examined. Both steady and pulsated jets are studied. It is observed that for a steady jet impingement on a pin-fin heat sink, the effective heat transfer coefficient increases with fin height, leading to a corresponding decrease in base plate temperature for the same heat flux. In the case of pulsated jets, the influence of pulse frequency and the Reynolds number is examined, and their effect on the effective heat transfer coefficient is studied.

A new and simple route for the synthesis of thioesters starting from carboxylic acids and alcohols is reported by using tetrathiomolybdate as the key sulfur transfer reagent. Triphenylphosphane and N-bromosuccinimide were used for the activation of the carboxylic acid and alcohol in the same pot followed by the transfer of sulfur from tetrathiomolybdate. Thioesters were obtained in good to moderate yields. Primary alcohols show excellent reactivity and gave good yields of the corresponding thioesters, whereas secondary alcohols gave moderate yields and tertiary alcohols were very less reactive and gave poor yields of the corresponding thioesters.

O6-Alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) repairs O6-methylguanine (O6mG) in DNA that is known to cause Mutation and cancer. On the basis of Calculations performed using density functional theory involving the active site of AGT, a mechanism for catalytic demethylation of O6mG to guanine has been proposed. In this mechanism, roles of six amino acids, i.e., Cys145, His 146, Glu172, Tyr114, Lys165, and Ser159 in catalytic demethylation of O6mG are involved. This mechanism has three steps as follows. At the first step, Cys145 in the Cys145-water-His146-Glu172 tetrad is converted to cysteine thiolate anion while at the second step, abstraction of the Tyr114 proton by the N3 site of O6mG occurs in a barrierless manner. In the third step, abstraction of Lys165 proton by deprotonated Tyr114 and transfer of the methyl group of O6mG to the thiolate group of Cys145 anion Occur simultaneously. As AGT is a major target in cancer therapy, identification of the roles of the different amino acids in demethylation of O6mG is expected to be useful in designing efficient AGT inhibitors.
