Prohibitive test time, nonuniformity of excitation, and signal nonlinearity are major concerns associated with employing dc, sine, and triangular/ramp signals, respectively, while determining static nonlinearity of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with high resolution (i.e., ten or more bits). Attempts to overcome these issues have been examined with some degree of success. This paper describes a novel method of estimating the ``true'' static nonlinearity of an ADC using a low-frequency sine signal (for example, less than 10 Hz) by employing the histogram-based approach. It is based on the well-known fact that the variation of a sine signal is ``reasonably linear'' when the angle is small, for example, in the range of +/- 5 degrees to +/- 7 degrees. In the proposed method, the ADC under test has to be ``fed'' with this ``linear'' portion of the sinewave. The presence of any harmonics and offset in input excitation makes this linear part of the sine signal marginally different compared with that of an ideal ramp signal of equal amplitude. However, since it is a sinusoid, this difference can be accurately determined and later compensated from the measured ADC output. Thus, the corrected ADC output will correspond to the true ADC static nonlinearity. The implementation of the proposed method is discussed along with experimental results for two 8-b ADCs and one 10-b ADC which are then compared with the static characteristics estimated by the conventional DC method.

The problem of determining optimal power spectral density models for earthquake excitation which satisfy constraints on total average power, zero crossing rate and which produce the highest response variance in a given linear system is considered. The solution to this problem is obtained using linear programming methods. The resulting solutions are shown to display a highly deterministic structure and, therefore, fail to capture the stochastic nature of the input. A modification to the definition of critical excitation is proposed which takes into account the entropy rate as a measure of uncertainty in the earthquake loads. The resulting problem is solved using calculus of variations and also within linear programming framework. Illustrative examples on specifying seismic inputs for a nuclear power plant and a tall earth dam are considered and the resulting solutions are shown to be realistic.

A new water soluble cationic imidazopyridine species, viz. (1E)-1-((pyridin-2-yl)methyleneamino)-3-(3(pyridin-2-yl) imidazo1,5-a]pyridin-2(3H)-yl)propan-2-ol (1), as a metal chelator is prepared as its PF6 salt and characterized. Compound 1 shows fluorescence at 438 nm on excitation at 342 nm in Tris-HCl buffer giving a fluorescence quantum yield (phi) of 0.105 and a life-time of 5.4 ns. Compound 1, as an avid DNA minor groove binder, shows pUC19 DNA cleavage activity in UV-A light of 365 nm forming singlet oxygen species in a type-II pathway. The photonuclease potential of 1 gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+, Cu2+ or Zn2+. Compound 1 itself displays anticancer activity in HeLa, HepG2 and Jurkat cells with an enhancement on addition of the metal ions. Photodynamic effect of 1 at 365 nm also gets enhanced in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+. Fluorescence-based cell cycle analysis shows a significant dead cell population in the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle suggesting apoptosis via ROS generation. A significant change in the nuclear morphology is observed from Hoechst 33258 and an acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual nuclear staining suggesting apoptosis in cells when treated with 1 alone or in the presence of the metal ions. Apoptosis is found to be caspase-dependent. Fluorescence imaging to monitor the distribution of 1 in cells shows that 1 in the presence of metal ions accumulates predominantly in the cytoplasm. Enhanced uptake of 1 into the cells within 12 h is observed in the presence of Fe2+ and Zn2+.

The spin and charge excitation gaps and charge and spin density distributions have been studied in macrocyclic binuclear aza-amido copper (II) complexes employing a model Hamiltonian. The spin gaps depend on the σ-orbital occupancies, and for small gaps, the exchange integral between the σ orbitals of the bridging oxygen atoms, KOO, which is sensitive to geometry, determines the low-lying spin excitations. The singlet—singlet gaps also depend upon the σ-orbital occupancy but are weakly dependent upon KOO.

Multiple quantum-single quantum correlation experiments are employed for spectral simplification and determination of the relative signs of the couplings. In this study, we have demonstrated the excitation of three nuclei, triple quantum coherences and discussed the information obtainable from such experiments. The experiments have been carried out on doubly labeled acetonitrile and fluoroacetonitrile aligned in liquid crystalline media. The experiment is advantageous in providing many spectral parameters from a single experiment. The coherence pathways involved in the pulse sequence are described using product operators. We report here an easily reversible set-reset process in a new Ge15Te83Si2 glass that could be a promising candidate for phase change random access memory applications. The I-V characteristics of the studied sample show a comparatively low threshold electric field (E-th) of 7.3 kV/cm. Distinct differences in the type of switching behavior are achieved by means of controlling the on state current. It enables the observation of a threshold type for less than 0.7 mA beyond memory type (set) switching. The set and reset processes have been achieved with a similar magnitude of 1 mA, and with a triangular current pulse for the set process and a short duration rectangular pulse of 10 msec width for the reset operation. Further, a self-resetting effect is seen in this material upon excitation with a saw-tooth/square pulse, and their response of leading and trailing edges are discussed. About 6.5 x 10(4) set-reset cycles have been undertaken without any damage to the device. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi: 10.1063/1.3574659]

The symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group approach is applied within the extended Hubbard-Peierls model (with parameters U/t, V/t, and bond alternation delta) to study the ordering of the lowest one-photon (1(1)B(u)(-)) and two-photon (2(1)A(g)(+)) states in one-dimensional conjugated systems with chain lengths N up to N = 80 sites. Three different types of crossovers are studied, as a function of U/t, delta, and N. The ''U crossover'' emphasizes the larger ionic character of the 2A(g) state compared to the lowest triplet excitation. The ''delta crossover'' shows strong dependence on both N and U/t. the ''N crossover'' illustrates the more localized nature of the 2A(g) excitation relative to the 1B(u) excitation at intermediate correlation strengths.

We analyze the origin of de-enhancement for a number of vibrational modes in the 2(1)A(g) excited state of trans-azobenzene. We have used the time-dependent wave packet analysis of the RR intensities by including the multimode damping effects in the calculation. This avoids the use of unrealistically large values for the damping parameter. It is concluded that the de-enhancement is caused by the interference between the two uncoupled electronic states, and that the intensities observed under the so-called symmetry forbidden 2(1)A(g) <-- 1(1)A(g) transition are purely due to resonance excitation. It is also observed that the use of the time-dependent approach to study the de-enhancement effects caused by multiple electronic states on the RR intensities is not necessarily useful if one is interested in the structural dynamics.

Perfluoro substituted organic compounds have attracted attention owing to their unique structure and reactivity induced by the perfluoro effect. Fluoranil, a perfluoro derivative of p-benzoquinone, is the subject of this paper. Although the perfluoro effect in the ground state seems to have been well understood there is no information available about such effects on the excited state. Here, the time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of the triplet excited state of fluoranil are reported along with the Raman excitation profiles (REPs) of the various vibrational modes. The vibrational spectral analyses have been carried out by analogy with the fluoranil ground state, triplet benzoquinone, and triplet chloranil vibrational spectral assignments. Also, the assignments are further supported by the calculated frequencies using ab initio theoretical methods. It is observed that for fluoranil in the triplet excited state, due to the perfluoro effect, the structure is considerably less distorted than benzoquinone and also the electron delocalization in the pi* antibonding orbital is less than that of triplet excited state of benzoquinone.

The photochromic, electrochromic and x-ray irradiation damages (commonly called the gray tracks) produced in KTiOPO4 single crystals have been studied using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Gray tracks were produced in this material by exposure to high laser powers (similar to MW/cm(2)), application of electric fields (similar to kV), and exposure to x rays (30 kV). The PL spectra recorded for such gray tracked samples at 4.2 K, exhibited a luminescence band in the 1-1.8 eV range with a peak at 1.41 eV. Temperature and excitation intensity dependence of PL peaks were carried out to probe the exact nature of the broad emission band in the gray tracked samples. The observed photoluminescence is attributed to transitions in the Ti3+ levels, created on irradiation. The microscopic effects produced in the crystal by electric field, optical field, and x rays are similar, as can be concluded from the similarity of PL spectra as well as their intensity and temperature dependences. This is an exploratory study to illustrate the feasibility of detecting delamination type of damage in polymeric laminates with one layer of magnetostrictive particles. One such beam encircled with excitation and sensing coils is used for this study. The change in stress gradient of the magnetostrictive layer in the vicinity of delamination shows up as a change in induced voltage in the sensing coil, and therefore provides a means to sense the presence of delamination. Recognizing the constitutive behavior of the Terfenol-D material is highly nonlinear, analytical expressions for the constitutive relations are developed by using curve fitting techniques to the experimental data. Analytical expressions that relate the applied excitation field with the stress and magnetic flux densities induced in the magnetostrictive layer are developed. Numerical methods are used to find the relative change in the induced voltage in the sensing coil due to the presence of delamination. A typical example of unidirectional laminate, with embedded delaminations, is used for the simulation purposes. This exploratory study illustrates that the open-circuit voltage induced in the sensing coil changes significantly (as large of 68 millivolts) with the occurrence of delamination. This feature can be exploited for device off-line inspection techniques and/or linking monitoring procedures for practical applications.

This paper reports the TR3 spectral studies on perfluorinated organic systems with the objective to understand the influence of perfluorination on the excited states. We have recorded the TR3 spectra and Raman excitation profiles of the triplet excited states of decafluorobenzophenone and fluoranil. It is found that the influence of perfluorination is more pronounced in the triplet excited state than the ground state and thus leads to enhanced reactivity for perfluorinated compounds through larger structural distortions.

Use of microwaves in the synthesis of materials is gaining importance. Microwave-assisted synthesis is generally much faster, cleaner, and more economical than the conventional methods. A variety of materials such as carbides, nitrides, complex oxides, silicides, zeolites, apatite, etc. have been synthesized using microwaves. Many of these are of industrial and technological importance. An understanding of the microwave interaction with materials has been based on concepts of dielectric heating and of the resonance absorption due to rotational excitation. This review presents a summary of recent reports of microwave synthesis of inorganic materials. Various observations regarding microwave interaction with materials are also briefly discussed.

We have carried out symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group calculations to study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian. We have used the C-2 symmetry, the electron-hole symmetry, and the spin parity of the system in our calculations. We find that there is a crossover in the lowest dipole forbidden two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state with size of the oligomer. In the long system limit, the two-photon state lies below the lowest dipole allowed excited state. The triplet state lies well below the two-photon state and energetically does not correspond to its description as being made up of two triplets. These results are in agreement with the general trends in linear conjugated polymers. However, unlike in linear polyenes wherein the two-photon state is a localized excitation, we find that in polyacenes, the two-photon excitation is spread out over the system. We have doped the systems with a hole and an electron and have calculated the charge excitation gap. Using the charge gap and the optical gap, we estimate the binding energy of the 1(1)B(-) exciton to be 2.09 eV. We have also studied doubly doped polyacenes and find that the bipolaron in these systems, to be composed of two separated polarons, as indicated by the calculated charge-density profile and charge-charge correlation function. We have studied bond orders in various states in order to get an idea of the excited state geometry of the system. We find that the ground state, the triplet state, the dipole allowed state, and the polaron excitations correspond to lengthening of the rung bonds in the interior of the oligomer while the two-photon excitation corresponds to the rung bond lengths having two maxima in the system.

The trans- and cis-stilbenes upon inclusion in NaY zeolite are thermally stable. Direct excitation and triplet sensitization results in geometric isomerization and the excited state behavior under these conditions are similar to that in solution. Upon direct excitation, a photostationary state consisting of 65% cis and 35% trans isomers is established. Triplet sensitization with 2-acetonaphthone gave a photostationary state consisting of 63% cis and 37% trans isomers. These numbers are similar to the ones obtained in solution. Thus, the presence of cations and the confined space within the zeolite have very little influence on the overall chemistry during direct and triplet sensitization. However, upon electron transfer sensitization with N-methylacridinium (NMA) as the sensitizer within NaY, isomerization from cis-stilbene radical cation to trans-stilbene occurs and the recombination of radical ions results in triplet stilbene. Prolonged irradiation gave a photostationary state (65% cis and 35% trans) similar to triplet sensitization. This behavior is unique to the zeolite and does not take place in solution. Steady state fluorescence measurements showed that the majority of stilbene molecules are close to the N-methylacridinium sensitizer. Diffuse reflectance flash photolysis studies established that independent of the isomer being sensitized only trans radical cation is formed. Triplet stilbene is believed to be generated via recombination of stilbene radical cation and sensitizer radical anion. One should be careful in using acidic HY zeolite as a medium for photoisomerization of stilbenes. In our hands, in these acidic zeolites isomerization dominated the photoisomerization.
