Computations have been carried out for simulating supersonic flow through a set of converging-diverging nozzles with their expanding jets forming a laser cavity and flow patterns through diffusers, past the cavity. A thorough numerical investigation with 3-D RANS code is carried out to capture the flow distribution which comprises of shock patterns and multiple supersonic jet interactions. The analysis of pressure recovery characteristics during the flow through the diffusers is an important parameter of the simulation and is critical for the performance of the laser device. The results of the computation have shown a close agreement with the experimentally measured parameters as well as other established results indicating that the flow analysis done is found to be satisfactory.

Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. This paper considers the degrees of freedom (DOF) for a K user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) M x N interference channel using interference alignment (IA). A new performance metric for evaluating the efficacy of IA algorithms is proposed, which measures the extent to which the desired signal dimensionality is preserved after zero-forcing the interference at the receiver. Inspired by the metric, two algorithms are proposed for designing the linear precoders and receive filters for IA in the constant MIMO interference channel with a finite number of symbol extensions. The first algorithm uses an eigenbeamforming method to align sub-streams of the interference to reduce the dimensionality of the interference at all the receivers. The second algorithm is iterative, and is based on minimizing the interference leakage power while preserving the dimensionality of the desired signal space at the intended receivers. The improved performance of the algorithms is illustrated by comparing them with existing algorithms for IA using Monte Carlo simulations.

In this paper, we report on the concept and the design principle of ultrafast Raman loss spectroscopy (URLS) as a structure-elucidating tool. URLS is an analogue of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) but more sensitive than SRS with better signal-to-noise ratio. It involves the interaction of two laser sources, namely, a picosecond (ps) Raman pump pulse and a white-light (WL) continuum, with a sample, leading to the generation of loss signals on the higher energy (blue) side with respect to the wavelength of the Raman pump unlike the gain signal observed on the lower energy (red) side in SRS. These loss signals are at least 1.5 times more intense than the SRS signals. An experimental study providing an insight into the origin of this extra intensity in URLS as compared to SRS is reported. Furthermore, the very requirement of the experimental protocol for the signal detection to be on the higher energy side by design eliminates the interference from fluorescence, which appears on the red side. Unlike CARS, URLS signals are not precluded by the non-resonant background and, being a self-phase-matched process, URLS is experimentally easier. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Low complexity decoders called Partial Interference Cancellation (PIC) and PIC with Successive Interference Cancellation (PIC-SIC), which include the Zero Forcing (ZF) and ZF-SIC receivers as special cases, were given by Guo and Xia along with sufficient conditions for a Space-Time Block Code (STBC) to achieve full diversity with PIC/PIC-SIC decoding for point-to-point MIMO channels. In Part-I of this two part series of papers, we give new conditions for an STBC to achieve full diversity with PIC and PIC-SIC decoders, which are equivalent to Guo and Xia's conditions, but are much easier to check. We then show that PIC and PIC-SIC decoders are capable of achieving the full cooperative diversity available in wireless relay networks and give sufficient conditions for a Distributed Space-Time Block Code (DSTBC) to achieve full diversity with PIC and PIC-SIC decoders. In Part-II, we construct new low complexity full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs and DSTBCs that achieve higher rates than the known full-diversity low complexity ML decodable STBCs and DSTBCs.

In this second part of a two part series of papers, we construct a new class of Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) for point-to-point MIMO channel and Distributed STBCs (DSTBCs) for the amplify-and-forward relay channel that give full-diversity with Partial Interference Cancellation (PIC) and PIC with Successive Interference Cancellation (PIC-SIC) decoders. The proposed class of STBCs include most of the known full-diversity low complexity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs as special cases. We also show that a number of known full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable STBCs that were constructed for the point-topoint MIMO channel can be used as full-diversity PIC/PIC-SIC decodable DSTBCs in relay networks. For the same decoding complexity, the proposed STBCs and DSTBCs achieve higher rates than the known low decoding complexity codes. Simulation results show that the new codes have a better bit error rate performance than the low ML decoding complexity codes available in the literature.

Past studies of memory interference in multiprocessor systems have generally assumed that the references of each processor are uniformly distributed among the memory modules. In this paper we develop a model with local referencing, which reflects more closely the behavior of real-life programs. This model is analyzed using Markov chain techniques and expressions are derived for the multiprocessor performance. New expressions are also obtained for the performance in the traditional uniform reference model and are compared with other expressions-available in the literature. Results of a simulation study are given to show the accuracy of the expressions for both models.

Bi-layered Aurivillius compounds prove to be efficient candidates of nonvolatile memories. SrBi2Nb2O9 thin films were deposited by excimer laser ablation at low substrate temperature (400 °C) followed by an ex situ annealing at 750 °C. The polarization hysteresis behavior was confirmed by variation of polarization with the external applied electric field and also verified with capacitance versus voltage characteristics. The measured values of spontaneous and remnant polarizations were, respectively, 9 and 6 μC/cm2 with a coercive field of 90 kV/cm. The measured dielectric constant and dissipation factors at 100 kHz were 220 and 0.02, respectively. The frequency analysis of dielectric and ac conduction properties showed a distribution of relaxation times due to the presence of multiple grain boundaries in the films. The values of activation energies from the dissipation factor and grain interior resistance were found to be 0.9 and 1.3 eV, respectively. The deviation in these values was attributed to the energetic conditions of the grain boundaries and bulk grains. The macroscopic relaxation phenomenon is controlled by the higher resistive component in a film, such as grain boundaries at lower temperatures, which was highlighted in the present article in close relation to interior grain relaxation and conduction properties.

The pulsed-laser ablation technique has been employed to deposit polycrystalline thin films of layered-structure ferroelectric BaBi2Nb2O9 (BBN). Low-substrate-temperature growth (Ts = 400 °C) followed by ex situ annealing at 800 °C for 30 min was performed to obtain a preferred orientation. Ferroelectricity in the films was verified by examining the polarization with the applied electric field and was also confirmed from the capacitance–voltage characteristics. The films exhibited well-defined hysteresis loops, and the values of saturation (Ps) and remanent (Pr) polarization were 4.0 and 1.2 μC/cm2, respectively. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 214 and 0.04, respectively, at a frequency of 100 kHz. A phase transition from a ferroelectric to paraelectric state of the BBN thin film was observed at 220 °C. The dissipation factor of the film was observed to increase after the phase transition due to a probable influence of dc conduction at high temperatures. The real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant also exhibited strong frequency dispersion at high temperatures.

Polycrystalline films of SrBi2Nb2O9 were grown using pulsed-laser ablation. The ferroelectric properties were achieved by low-temperature deposition followed by a subsequent annealing process. The lower switching voltage was obtained by lowering the thickness, which did not affect the insulating nature of the films. The hysteresis results showed an excellent square-shaped loop with results (Pr = 6 μC/cm2, Ec = 100 kV/cm) in good agreement with earlier reports. The films also exhibited a dielectric constant of 250 and a dissipation factor of 0.02. The transport studies indicated an ohmic behavior, while higher voltages induced a bulk space charge.

Niobium-modified lead zirconate stannate titanate antiferroelectric thin films with the chemical composition of (Pb0.99Nb0.02)(Zr0.57Sn0.38Ti0.05)0.98O3 were deposited by pulsed excimer laser ablation technique on Pt-coated Si substrates. Field-induced phase transition from antiferroelectric to ferroelectric properties was studied at different fields as a function of temperature. The field forced ferroelectric phase transition was elucidated by the presence of double-polarization hysteresis and double-butterfly characteristics from polarization versus applied electric field and capacitance and voltage measurements, respectively. The measured forward and reverse switching fields were 25 kV/cm and 77 kV/cm, respectively. The measured dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 540 and 0.001 at 100 kHz, respectively, at room temperature.

A detailed study of surface laser damage performed on a nonlinear optical crystal, urea L-malic acid, using 7 ns laser pulses at 10 Hz repetition rate from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at wavelengths of 532 and 1064 nm is reported. The single shot and multiple shot surface laser damage threshold values are determined to be 26.64±0.19 and 20.60±0.36 GW cm−2 at 1064 nm and 18.44±0.31 and 7.52±0.22 GW cm−2 at 532 nm laser radiation, respectively. The laser damage anisotropy is consistent with the Vickers mechanical hardness measurement performed along three crystallographic directions. The Knoop polar plot also reflects the damage morphology. Our investigation reveals a direct correlation between the laser damage profile and hardness anisotropy. Thermal breakdown of the crystal is identified as the possible mechanism of laser induced surface damage.
