In arriving at the ideal filter transfer function for an active noise control system in a duct, the effect of the auxiliary sources (generally loudspeakers) on the waves generated by the primary source has invariably been neglected in the existing literature, implying a rigid wall or infinite impedance. The present paper presents a fairly general analysis of a linear one-dimensional noise control system by means of block diagrams and transfer functions. It takes into account the passive as well as active role of a terminal primary source, wall-mounted auxiliary source, open duct radiation impedance, and the effects of mean flow and damping. It is proved that the pressure generated by a source against a load impedance can be looked upon as a sum of two pressure waves, one generated by the source against an anechoic termination and the other by reflecting the rearward wave (incident on the source) off the passive source impedance. Application of this concept is illustrated for both the types of sources. A concise closed-form expression for the ideal filter transfer function is thus derived and discussed. Finally, the dynamics of an adaptive noise control system is discussed briefly, relating its standing-wave variables and transfer functions with those of the progressive-wave model presented here.

In this paper, we deal with low-complexity near-optimal detection/equalization in large-dimension multiple-input multiple-output inter-symbol interference (MIMO-ISI) channels using message passing on graphical models. A key contribution in the paper is the demonstration that near-optimal performance in MIMO-ISI channels with large dimensions can be achieved at low complexities through simple yet effective simplifications/approximations, although the graphical models that represent MIMO-ISI channels are fully/densely connected (loopy graphs). These include 1) use of Markov random field (MRF)-based graphical model with pairwise interaction, in conjunction with message damping, and 2) use of factor graph (FG)-based graphical model with Gaussian approximation of interference (GAI). The per-symbol complexities are O(K(2)n(t)(2)) and O(Kn(t)) for the MRF and the FG with GAI approaches, respectively, where K and n(t) denote the number of channel uses per frame, and number of transmit antennas, respectively. These low-complexities are quite attractive for large dimensions, i.e., for large Kn(t). From a performance perspective, these algorithms are even more interesting in large-dimensions since they achieve increasingly closer to optimum detection performance for increasing Kn(t). Also, we show that these message passing algorithms can be used in an iterative manner with local neighborhood search algorithms to improve the reliability/performance of M-QAM symbol detection.

High voltage power supplies for radar applications are investigated, which are subjected to pulsed load (125 kHz and 10% duty cycle) with stringent specifications (<0.01% regulation, efficiency>85%, droop<0.5 V/micro-sec.). As good regulation and stable operation requires the converter to be switched at much higher frequency than the pulse load frequency, transformer poses serious problems of insulation failure and higher losses. This paper proposes a methodology to tackle the problems associated with this type of application. Synchronization of converter switching with load pulses enables the converter to switch at half the load switching frequency. Low switching frequency helps in ensuring safety of HV transformer insulation and reduction of losses due to skin and proximity effect. Phase-modulated series resonant converter with ZVS is used as the power converter.

Lagrange's equation is utilized to show the analogy of a lossless microwave cavity resonator with the conventional LC network. A brief discussion on the resonant frequencies of a microwave cavity resonator and the two degenerate companion modes H01 and E11 appearing in a cavity is given. The first order perturbation theory of a small deformation of the wall of a cavity is discussed. The effects of perturbation, such as the change in the resonant frequency and the Q of a cavity, the change in the electromagnetic field configurations and hence mixing of modes are also discussed. An expression for the coupling coefficient between the two degenerate modes H01 and E11 is derived with the help of the field equations. Results indicate that in the absence of perturbation the above two degenerate modes can co-exist without losing their individual identities. Several applications of the perturbation theory, such as the measurement of the dielectric properties of matter, study of ferromagnetic resonance, etc., are described.

The paper presents a graphical-numerical method for determining the transient stability limits of a two-machine system under the usual assumptions of constant input, no damping and constant voltage behind transient reactance. The method presented is based on the phase-plane criterion,1, 2 in contrast to the usual step-by-step and equal-area methods. For the transient stability limit of a two-machine system, under the assumptions stated, the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy, at the instant of fault clearing, should just be equal to the maximum value of the potential energy which the machines can accommodate with the fault cleared. The assumption of constant voltage behind transient reactance is then discarded in favour of the more accurate assumption of constant field flux linkages. Finally, the method is extended to include the effect of field decrement and damping. A number of examples corresponding to each case are worked out, and the results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the usual methods.

This study concerns the flow-acoustic characterisation of a cavity-based combustor configuration. A well-validated numerical tool has been used to simulate the unsteady, two-dimensional reacting flow. Initially, a conventional flow over a cavity with dimensions and conditions corresponding to a compact cavity combustor was studied. Cavity mass injections in the form of fuel and air injections required for trapped vortex formation were then employed and the resonance features of this configuration were studied. The results indicate that the cavity depth mode resonance mechanism is dominant at the conditions studied in this work and that the oscillation frequencies do not change with cavity air injection. This observation is important since it implies that the only important variable which can alter resonant frequencies is the cavity depth. With combustion, the pressure oscillation amplitude was observed to increases significantly due to periodic entrainment of the cavity air jet and fluctuation of fuel-air mixture composition to produce highly fluctuating heat-release rates. The underlying mechanisms of the unsteady flow in the cavity combustor identified in this study indicate the strong dependence of the acoustics on the cavity injection strategies.

This paper presents the development of a neural network based power system stabilizer (PSS) designed to enhance the damping characteristics of a practical power system network representing a part of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) system. The proposed PSS consists of a neuro-identifier and a neuro-controller which have been developed based on functional link network (FLN) model. A recursive on-line training algorithm has been utilized to train the two neural networks. Simulation results have been obtained under various operating conditions and severe disturbance cases which show that the proposed neuro-PSS can provide a better damping to the local as well as interarea modes of oscillations as compared to a conventional PSS

This paper deals with preparation of nanocomposites using modified nanoclay (organoclay) and polypropylene (PP), with, and without compatibilizer (m-TMI-g-PP) to study the effects of modified nanoclay and compatibilizer on viscoelastic properties. Nanocomposites were prepared in two steps; compounding of master batch of nanoclay, polypropylene and m-TMI-g-PP in a torque rheometer and blending of this master-batch with polypropylene in a twin-screw extruder in the specific proportions to yield 3-9% nanoclay by weight in the composite. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests were carried out to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of virgin polypropylene and nanocomposites. The dynamic mechanical properties such as storage modulus (E'), loss modulus (E `') and damping coefficient (tand) of PP and nano-composites were investigated with and without compatibilizer in the temperature range of -40 degrees C to 140 degrees C at a step of 5 degrees C and frequency range of 5 Hz to 100 Hz at a step of 10 Hz. Storage modulus and loss modulus of the nano-composites was significantly higher than virgin polypropylene throughout the temperature range. Storage modulus of the composites increased continuously with increasing nano-content from 3% to 9%. Composites prepared with compatibilizer exhibited inferior storage modulus than the composites without compatibilizer. Surface morphology such as dispersion of nanoclay in the composites with and without compatibilizer was analyzed through Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) that explained the differences in viscoelastic behavior of composites. The effect of base dissipation on the granular flow down an inclined plane is examined by altering the coefficient of restitution between the moving and base particles in discrete element (DE) simulations. The interaction laws between two moving particles are kept fixed, and the coefficient of restitution (damping constant in the DE simulations) between the base and moving particles are altered to reduce dissipation, and inject energy from the base. The energy injection does result in an increase in the strain rate by up to an order of magnitude, and the temperature by up to two orders of magnitude at the base. However, the volume fraction, strain rate and temperature profiles in the bulk (above about 15 particle diameters from the base) are altered very little by the energy injection at the base. We also examine the variation of h(stop), the minimum height at the cessation of flow, with energy injection from the base. It is found that at a fixed angle of inclination, h(stop) decreases as the energy dissipation at the base decreases.

Lamb wave type guided wave propagation in foam core sandwich structures and detectability of damages using spectral analysis method are reported in this paper. An experimental study supported by theoretical evaluation of the guided wave characteristics is presented here that shows the applicability of Lamb wave type guided ultrasonic wave for detection of damage in foam core sandwich structures. Sandwich beam specimens were fabricated with 10 mm thick foam core and 0.3 mm thick aluminum face sheets. Thin piezoelectric patch actuators and sensors are used to excite and sense guided wave. Group velocity dispersion curves and frequency response of sensed signal are obtained experimentally. The nature of damping present in the sandwich panel is monitored by measuring the sensor signal amplitude at various different distances measured from the center of the linear phased array. Delaminations of increasing width are created and detected experimentally by pitch-catch interrogation with guided waves and wavelet transform of the sensed signal. Signal amplitudes are analyzed for various different sizes of damages to differentiate the damage size/severity. A sandwich panel is also fabricated with a planer dimension of 600 mm x 400 mm. Release film delamination is introduced during fabrication. Non-contact Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) is used to scan the panel while exciting with a surface bonded piezoelectric actuator. Presence of damage is confirmed by the reflected wave fringe pattern obtained from the LDV scan. With this approach it is possible to locate and monitor the damages by tracking the wave packets scattered from the damages.

Despite their small size, some insects, such as crickets, can produce high amplitude mating songs by rubbing their wings together. By exploiting structural resonance for sound radiation, crickets broadcast species-specific songs at a sharply tuned frequency. Such songs enhance the range of signal transmission, contain information about the signaler's quality, and allow mate choice. The production of pure tones requires elaborate structural mechanisms that control and sustain resonance at the species-specific frequency. Tree crickets differ sharply from this scheme. Although they use a resonant system to produce sound, tree crickets can produce high amplitude songs at different frequencies, varying by as much as an octave. Based on an investigation of the driving mechanism and the resonant system, using laser Doppler vibrometry and finite element modeling, we show that it is the distinctive geometry of the crickets' forewings (the resonant system) that is responsible for their capacity to vary frequency. The long, enlarged wings enable the production of high amplitude songs; however, as a mechanical consequence of the high aspect ratio, the resonant structures have multiple resonant modes that are similar in frequency. The drive produced by the singing apparatus cannot, therefore, be locked to a single frequency, and different resonant modes can easily be engaged, allowing individual males to vary the carrier frequency of their songs. Such flexibility in sound production, decoupling body size and song frequency, has important implications for conventional views of mate choice, and offers inspiration for the design of miniature, multifrequency, resonant acoustic radiators.

We report on the Lamb wave type guided wave propagation in honeycomb core sandwich structures. An experimental study supported by theoretical evaluation of the guided wave characteristics is presented that proves the potential of Lamb wave type guided wave for detection of damage in sandwich structures. A sandwich panel is fabricated with planar dimension of 600 mm x 600 mm, having a core thickness of 7 mm, cell size of 5 mm and 0.1 mm thick aluminum face sheets. Thin piezoelectric patch actuators and sensors are used to excite and sense a frequency band limited guided wave with a central frequency. A linear phased array of piezoelectric patch actuators is used to achieve higher signal strength and directivity. Group velocity dispersion curves and corresponding frequency response of sensed signal are obtained experimentally. Linearity between the excitation signal amplitude and the corresponding sensed signal amplitude is found for certain range of parameters. The nature of damping present in the sandwich panel is monitored by measuring the sensor signal amplitude at various different distances measured from the center of the linear phased array. Indentation and low velocity impact induced damages of increasing diameter covering several honeycomb cells are created. Crushing of honeycomb core with rupture of face sheet is observed while introducing the damage. The damages are then detected experimentally by pitch-catch interrogation with guided waves and wavelet transform of the sensed signal. Signal amplitudes are analyzed for various different sizes of damages to differentiate the damage size/severity. Monotonic changes in the sensor signal amplitude due to increase in the damage size has been established successfully. With this approach it is possible to locate and monitor the damages with the help of phased array and by tracking the wave packets scattered from the damages. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We develop a coupled nonlinear oscillator model involving magnetization and strain to explain several experimentally observed dynamical features exhibited by forced magnetostrictive ribbon. Here we show that the model recovers the observed period-doubling route to chaos as function of the dc field for a fixed ac field and quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the ac field, keeping the dc field constant. The model also predicts induced and suppressed chaos under the influence of an additional small-amplitude near-resonant ac field. Our analysis suggests rich dynamics in coupled order-parameter systems such as magnetomartensitic and magnetoelectric materials.

We study the linear m= 1 counter-rotating instability in a two-component, nearly Keplerian disc. Our goal is to understand these slow modes in discs orbiting massive black holes in galactic nuclei. They are of interest not only because they are of large spatial scale and can hence dominate observations but also because they can be growing modes that are readily excited by accretion events. Self-gravity being non-local, the eigenvalue problem results in a pair of coupled integral equations, which we derive for a two-component softened gravity disc. We solve this integral eigenvalue problem numerically for various values of mass fraction in the counter-rotating component. The eigenvalues are in general complex, being real only in the absence of the counter-rotating component, or imaginary when both components have identical surface density profiles. Our main results are as follows: (i) the pattern speed appears to be non-negative, with the growth (or damping) rate being larger for larger values of the pattern speed; (ii) for a given value of the pattern speed, the growth (or damping) rate increases as the mass in the counter-rotating component increases; (iii) the number of nodes of the eigenfunctions decreases with increasing pattern speed and growth rate. Observations of lopsided brightness distributions would then be dominated by modes with the least number of nodes, which also possess the largest pattern speeds and growth rates.

The β-phase of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is well known for its piezoelectric properties. PVDF films have been developed using solvent cast method. The films thus produced are in α-phase. The α-phase is transformed to piezoelectric β-phase when the film is hot-stretched with various different stretching factors at various different temperatures. The films are then characterized in terms of their mechanical properties and surface morphological changes during the transformation from α- to β-phases by using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, Raman spectra, Infrared spectra, tensile testing, and scanning electron microscopy. The films showed increased crystallinity with stretching at temperature up to 80°C. The optimum conditions to achieve β-phase have been discussed in detail. The fabricated PVDF sensors have been tested for free vibration and impact on plate structure, and its response is compared with conventional piezoelectric wafer type sensor. The resonant and antiresonant peaks in the frequency response of PVDF sensor match well with that of lead zirconate titanate wafer sensors. Effective piezoelectric properties and the variations in the frequency response spectra due to free vibration and impact loading conditions are reported. POLYM. ENG.
