Altitude profile of aerosol Single Scattering Albedo (SSA), derived from simultaneous in-situ airborne measurements of the coefficients of aerosol absorption and scattering off the west coast of India over the Arabian Sea (AS), during January 2009 is presented. While both the absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with altitude, their vertical structure differed significantly. Consequently, the derived SSA, with a surface value of 0.94, decreased with altitude, illustrating increasing relative dominance of aerosol absorption at higher altitudes. Altitude profile of SSA, when examined in conjunction with that of hemispheric backscatter fraction, revealed that the continental influence on the aerosol properties was higher at higher altitude, rather than the effect of marine environment. During an east-west transect across the peninsular India at an altitude of similar to 2500 m (free troposphere), it was found that the aerosol scattering coefficients remained nearly the same over both east and west coasts. In this paper we address the problem of distributed transmission of functions of correlated sources over a fast fading multiple access channel (MAC). This is a basic building block in a hierarchical sensor network used in estimating a random field where the cluster head is interested only in estimating a function of the observations. The observations are transmitted to the cluster head through a fast fading MAC. We provide sufficient conditions for lossy transmission when the encoders and decoders are provided with partial information about the channel state. Furthermore signal side information maybe available at the encoders and the decoder. Various previous studies are shown as special cases. Efficient joint-source channel coding schemes are discussed for transmission of discrete and continuous alphabet sources to recover function values.

Nanocrystalline Fe powders were synthesized by transmetallation reaction and embedded in silica to form Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite. Thermomagnetic study of the as-prepared Fe sample indicates the presence of Fe3O4 and Fe particles. Oxidation studies of Fe and Fe-SiO2 show an increased thermal stability of Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite over pure Fe. The Fe-SiO2 shows an enhanced oxidation temperature (i.e., 780 K) and a maximum saturation magnetization value of (135 emu/g) with 64 wt.% of Fe content in silica. Electrical and dielectric behaviour of the Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite has been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. Low frequency ac conductivity and dielectric constants were found to be influenced by desorptions of chemisorbed moisture. High saturation magnetization, thermal stability, frequency-dependent conductivity and low power loss make Fe-silica a promising material for high frequency applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. It is well known that n-length stabilizer quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) can be obtained via n-length classical error correction codes (CECCs) over GF(4), that are additive and self-orthogonal with respect to the trace Hermitian inner product. But, most of the CECCs have been studied with respect to the Euclidean inner product. In this paper, it is shown that n-length stabilizer QECCs can be constructed via 371 length linear CECCs over GF(2) that are self-orthogonal with respect to the Euclidean inner product. This facilitates usage of the widely studied self-orthogonal CECCs to construct stabilizer QECCs. Moreover, classical, binary, self-orthogonal cyclic codes have been used to obtain stabilizer QECCs with guaranteed quantum error correcting capability. This is facilitated by the fact that (i) self-orthogonal, binary cyclic codes are easily identified using transform approach and (ii) for such codes lower bounds on the minimum Hamming distance are known. Several explicit codes are constructed including two pure MDS QECCs.

Oxidation of representative halophenols and halonaphthols by peroxidisulphate has been examined. The influence of metallic ions, viz. Cu2+, Fe3+, Ag+, on the above reaction has been studied. Cu2+ ion-catalyzed oxidation gives halo-1, 4-quinones in excellent yield. Potassium bis(biureto)cuprate(III) complex also oxidises halophenols to halo-1, 4-quinones.

The combined effects of the permeability of the medium, magnetic field, buoyancy forces and dissipation on the unsteady mixed convection flow over a horizontal cylinder and a sphere embedded in a porous medium have been studied. The nonlinear coupled partial differential equations with three independent variables have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer increase with the permeability of the medium, magnetic field and buoyancy parameter. The heat and mass transfer continuously decrease with the stream-wise distance, whereas the skin friction increases from zero, attains a maximum and then decreases to zero. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are significantly affected by the free stream velocity distribution. The effect of dissipation parameter is found to be more pronounced on the heat transfer than on the skin friction and mass transfer

A numerical solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations under similarity assumptions is obtained. The solution represents the three-dimensional unsteady fluid motion caused by the time-dependent stretching of a flat boundary. It has been shown that a self-similar solution exists when either the rate of stretching is decreasing with time or it is constant. Three different numerical techniques are applied and a comparison is made among them as well as with earlier results. Analysis is made for various situations like deceleration in stretching of the boundary, mass transfer at the surface, saddle and nodal point flows, and the effect of a magnetic field. Both the constant temperature and constant heat flux conditions at the wall have been studied.

Liquid-phase homogeneous catalytic oxidation of styrene with Wilkinson complex by molecular oxygen in toluene medium gave selectively benzaldehyde and formaldehyde as the primary products. Higher temperatures and styrene conversions eventually led to acid formation due to co-oxidation of aldehyde.A reaction induction period and an initiation period, typical of free-radical reactions, characterized the oxidation process. The effects of temperature and catalyst and styrene concentrations on the conversion of styrene to benzaldehyde and acid formation have been studied. The optimum reaction parameters have been determined as a styrene-to-solvent mole ratio of 0.5, a catalyst-to-styrene mole ratio of 5.0 X lo4, and a reaction temperature of 75 "C. A reaction scheme based upon free-radical mechanism yielded a pseudo-first-order model which agreed well with the observed kinetic data in the absence of co-oxidation of aldehyde. A second-order model was found to fit the experimental data better in the case of aldehyde conversion to acid.

Chemically modified microporous materials can be prepared as robust catalysts suitable for application in vapor phase processes such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation. In the present paper we have investigated the use of rare earth metal (Ce3+, La3+, RE3+, and Sm3+) exchanged Na-Y zeolites as catalysts for the alkylation of benzene with long chain linear 1-olefin; 1-dodecene. Thermodesorption studies of 2,6-dimethylpyridine adsorbed catalysts (in the temperature range 573 to 873 K) show that the rare earth zeolites are highly Bronsted acidic in nature. A perfect correlation between catalyst selectivity towards the desired product (2-phenyldodecane) and Bronsted acid sites amount has been observed. (c) 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

Long-range transport of continental dust makes these particles a significant constituent even at locations far from their sources. It is important to study the temporal variations in dust loading over desert regions and the role of meteorology, in order to assess its radiative impact. In this paper, infrared radiance (10.5-12.5 mu m), acquired by the METEOSAT-5 satellite (similar to 5-km resolution) during 1999 and 2003 was used to quantify wind dependence of dust aerosols and to estimate the radiative forcing. Our analysis shows that the frequency of occurrence of dust events was higher during 2003 compared to 1999. Since the dust production function depends mainly on the surface wind speed over regions which are dry and without vegetation, the role of surface wind on IDDI was examined in detail. It was found that an increase of IDDI with wind speed was nearly linear and the rate of increase in IDDI with surface wind was higher during 2003 compared to 1999. It was also observed that over the Indian desert, when wind speed was the highest during monsoon months (June to August), the dust production rate was lower because of higher soil moisture (due to monsoon rainfall). Over the Arabian deserts, when the wind speed is the highest during June to August, the dust production rate is also highest, as soil moisture is lowest during this season. Even though nothing can be said precisely on the reason why 2003 had a greater number of dust events, examination of monthly mean soil moisture at source regions indicates that the occurrence of high winds simultaneous with high soil moisture could be the reason for the decreased dust production efficiency in 1999. It appears that the deserts of Northwest India are more efficient dust sources compared to the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Northeast Africa (excluding Sahara). The radiative impact of dust over various source regions is estimated, and the regionally and annually averaged top of the atmosphere dust radiative forcing (short wave, clear-sky and over land) over the entire study region (0-35 degrees N; 30 degrees-100 degrees E) was in the range of -0.9 to +4.5 W m(-2). The corresponding values at the surface were in the range of -10 to -25 W m(-2). Our studies demonstrate that neglecting the diurnal variation of dust can cause errors in the estimation of long wave dust forcing by as much as 50 to 100%, and nighttime retrieval of dust can significantly reduce the uncertainties. A method to retrieve dust aerosols during nighttime is proposed. The regionally and annually averaged long wave dust radiative forcing was +3.4 +/- 1.6 W m(-2).

Making use of aerosol optical depths (AOD) derived from MODIS (onboard TERRA satellite) and winds from NCEP, and the fact that sea-salt optical depth over ocean is determined primarily by sea-surface wind speed, we examine the contribution of sea-salt to the composite aerosol optical depth ( AOD) over Arabian Sea ( AS), by developing empirical models for characterizing wind-speed dependence of sea-salt optical depth. We show that at high wind speeds, sea-salt contributes 81% to the coarse mode and 42% to the composite AOD in the southern AS. In contrast to this, over the northern AS, share of sea-salt to coarse mode and composite optical depth is only 35% and 16% respectively. Comparison of the sea-salt optical depth and coarse mode optical depth ( MODIS) showed excellent agreement. The sea-salt optical depth over AS at moderate to high wind speed is comparable to the anthropogenic AOD reported for this region during winter.

A completely automated temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) system for carrying out gas-solid catalytic reactions under atmospheric flow conditions is fabricated to study CO and hydrocarbon oxidation, and NO reduction. The system consists of an all-stainless steel UHV system, quadrupole mass spectrometer SX200 (VG Scientific), a tubular furnace and micro-reactor, a temperature controller, a versatile gas handling system, and a data acquisition and analysis system. The performance of the system has been tested under standard experimental conditions for CO oxidation over well-characterized Ce1-x-y(La/Y)(y)O2-delta catalysts. Testing of 3-way catalysis with CO, NO and C2H2 to convert to CO2, N-2 and H2O is done with this catalyst which shows complete removal of pollutants below 325 degrees C. Fixed oxide-ion defects in Pt substituted Ce1-y(La/Y)(y)O2-y/2 show higher catalytic activity than Pt ion-substituted CeO2

In this paper we address the problem of transmission of correlated sources over a fast fading multiple access channel (MAC) with partial channel state information available at both the encoders and the decoder. We provide sufficient conditions for transmission with given distortions. Next these conditions are specialized to a Gaussian MAC (GMAC). We provide the optimal power allocation strategy and compare the strategy with various levels of channel state information.

This paper describes a theoretical model for the growth of titanium oxide by thermal oxidation of titanium. It is shown that this model can explain the formation of layers of different oxides of titanium and the changes in these layers with variations in the conditions of oxidation. Some experimental X-ray diffraction results which support the model are also given.
