The complete amino acid sequence of a cytotoxin-like basic protein (CLBP) from the venom of Naja naja naja (Indian Cobra) was determined by manual degradation using a 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-isothiocyanate double-coupling method. Peptide fragments obtained by chemical cleavage with cyanogen bromide and enzymic cleavages with trypsin and Staphylococcus aureus proteases for sequence analysis were purified by reversed-phase chromatography. The total number of amino acid residues was 61, with leucine as the C-terminal residue. (C) Munksgaard 1995.

Violin strings are relatively short and stiff and are well modeled by Timoshenko beam theory. We use the static part of the homogeneous differential equation of violin strings to obtain new shape functions for the finite element analysis of rotating Timoshenko beams. For deriving the shape functions, the rotating beam is considered as a sequence of violin strings. The violin string shape functions depend on rotation speed and element position along the beam length and account for centrifugal stiffening effects as well as rotary inertia and shear deformation on dynamic characteristics of rotating Timoshenko beams. Numerical results show that the violin string basis functions perform much better than the conventional polynomials at high rotation speeds and are thus useful for turbo machine applications. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are search methods that are being employed in a multitude of applications with extremely large search spaces. Recently, there has been considerable interest among GA researchers in understanding and formalizing the working of GAs. In an earlier paper, we have introduced the notion of binomially distributed populations as the central idea behind an exact ''populationary'' model of the large-population dynamics of the GA operators for objective functions called ''functions of unitation.'' In this paper, we extend this populationary model of GA dynamics to a more general class of objective functions called functions of unitation variables. We generalize the notion of a binomially distributed population to a generalized binomially distributed population (GBDP). We show that the effects of selection, crossover, and mutation can be exactly modelled after decomposing the population into GBDPs. Based on this generalized model, we have implemented a GA simulator for functions of two unitation variables-GASIM 2, and the distributions predicted by GASIM 2 match with those obtained from actual GA runs. The generalized populationary model of GA dynamics not only presents a novel and natural way of interpreting the workings of GAs with large populations, but it also provides for an efficient implementation of the model as a GA simulator. This paper deals with the system oriented analysis, design, modeling, and implementation of active clamp HF link three phase converter. The main advantage of the topology is reduced size, weight, and cost of the isolation transformer. However, violation of basic power conversion rules due to presence of the leakage inductance in the HF transformer causes over voltage stresses across the cycloconverter devices. It makes use of the snubber circuit necessary in such topologies. The conventional RCD snubbers are dissipative in nature and hence inefficient. The efficiency of the system is greatly improved by using regenerative snubber or active clamp circuit. It consists of an active switching device with an anti-parallel diode and one capacitor to absorb the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the isolation transformer and to regenerate the same without affecting circuit performance. The turn on instant and duration of the active device are selected such that it requires simple commutation requirements. The time domain expressions for circuit dynamics, design criteria of the snubber capacitor with two conflicting constrains (over voltage stress across the devices and the resonating current duration), the simulation results based on generalized circuit model and the experimental results based on laboratory prototype are presented.

The present investigation analyses the thermodynamic behaviour of the surfaces and adsorption as a function of temperature and composition in the Fe-S-O melts based on the Butler's equations. The calculated-values of the surface tensions exhibit an elevation or depression depending on the type of the added solute at a concentration which coincides with that already present in the system. Generally, the desorption of the solutes as a function of temperature results in an initial increase followed by a decrease in the values of the surface tension. The observations are analyzed based on the surface interaction parameters which are derived in the present research.

The crystal structure of the saccharide-free form of the basic form of winged-bean agglutinin (WBAI) has been solved by the molecular-replacement method and refined at 2.3 Angstrom resolution The final R factor is 19.74b for all data in the resolution range 8.0-2.3 Angstrom. The asymmetric unit contains two half-dimers, each located on a crystallographic twofold axis. The structure of the saccharide-free form is compared with that of the complex of WBAI wi th methyl-alpha-D-galactoside. The complex is composed of two dimers in the asymmetric unit. The intersubunit interactions in the dimer are nearly identical in the two structures The binding site of the saccharide-free structure contains three ordered water molecules at positions similar to those of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate which an hydrogen bonded to the protein. Superposition of the saccharide-binding sites of the two structures shows that the major changes involve expulsion of these ordered water molecules and a shift of about 0.6 Angstrom of the main-chain atoms of the variable loop.

In this paper we consider the problem of learning an n × n kernel matrix from m(1) similarity matrices under general convex loss. Past research have extensively studied the m = 1 case and have derived several algorithms which require sophisticated techniques like ACCP, SOCP, etc. The existing algorithms do not apply if one uses arbitrary losses and often can not handle m > 1 case. We present several provably convergent iterative algorithms, where each iteration requires either an SVM or a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) solver for m > 1 case. One of the major contributions of the paper is to extend the well knownMirror Descent(MD) framework to handle Cartesian product of psd matrices. This novel extension leads to an algorithm, called EMKL, which solves the problem in O(m2 log n 2) iterations; in each iteration one solves an MKL involving m kernels and m eigen-decomposition of n × n matrices. By suitably defining a restriction on the objective function, a faster version of EMKL is proposed, called REKL,which avoids the eigen-decomposition. An alternative to both EMKL and REKL is also suggested which requires only an SVMsolver. Experimental results on real world protein data set involving several similarity matrices illustrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithms.

We study the exact one-electron propagator and spectral function of a solvable model of interacting electrons due to Schulz and Shastry. The solution previously found for the energies and wave functions is extended to give spectral functions that turn out to be computable, interesting, and nontrivial. They provide one of the few examples of cases where the spectral functions are known asymptotically as well as exactly.

A comprehensive scheme has been developed for the prediction of radiation from engine exhaust and its incidence on an arbitrarily located sensor. Existing codes have been modified for the simulation of flows inside nozzles and jets. A novel view factor computation scheme has been applied for the determination of the radiosities of the discrete panels of a diffuse and gray nozzle surface. The narrowband model has been used to model the radiation from the gas inside the nozzle and the nonhomogeneous jet. The gas radiation from the nozzle inclusive of nozzle surface radiosities have been used as boundary conditions on the jet radiation. Geometric modeling techniques have been developed to identify and isolate nozzle surface panels and gas columns of the nozzle and jet to determine the radiation signals incident on the sensor. The scheme has been validated for intensity and heat flux predictions, and some useful results of practical importance have been generated to establish its viability for infrared signature analysis of jets.

Instruction scheduling with an automaton-based resource conflict model is well-established for normal scheduling. Such models have been generalized to software pipelining in the modulo-scheduling framework. One weakness with existing methods is that a distinct automaton must be constructed for each combination of a reservation table and initiation interval. In this work, we present a different approach to model conflicts. We construct one automaton for each reservation table which acts as a compact encoding of all the conflict automata for this table, which can be recovered for use in modulo-scheduling. The basic premise of the construction is to move away from the Proebsting-Fraser model of conflict automaton to the Muller model of automaton modelling issue sequences. The latter turns out to be useful and efficient in this situation. Having constructed this automaton, we show how to improve the estimate of resource constrained initiation interval. Such a bound is always better than the average-use estimate. We show that our bound is safe: it is always lower than the true initiation interval. This use of the automaton is orthogonal to its use in modulo-scheduling. Once we generate the required information during pre-processing, we can compute the lower bound for a program without any further reference to the automaton.

The paper deals with the existence of a quadratic Lyapunov function V = x′P(t)x for an exponentially stable linear system with varying coefficients described by the vector differential equation S0305004100044777_inline1 The derivative dV/dt is allowed to be strictly semi-(F) and the locus dV/dt = 0 does not contain any arc of the system trajectory. It is then shown that the coefficient matrix A(t) of the exponentially stable sy

We derive the computational cutoff rate, R-o, for coherent trellis-coded modulation (TCM) schemes on independent indentically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading channels with (K, L) generalized selection combining (GSC) diversity, which combines the K paths with the largest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) among the L available diversity paths. The cutoff rate is shown to be a simple function of the moment generating function (MGF) of the SNR at the output of the (K, L) GSC receiver. We also derive the union bound on the bit error probability of TCM schemes with (K, L) GSC in the form of a simple, finite integral. The effectiveness of this bound is verified through simulations.
