A simple method for the preparation of monophasic beta-SiAlON using nitridation of Si and AIN with an oxygen partial pressure of 10(-4) atm is described. The effect of the AlN/Si ratio in the initial mixture on the formation of beta-SiAlON is discussed. The likely mechanism of the formation of beta-SiAlON is outlined.

An account is given of the research that has been carried out on mechanical alloying/milling (MA/MM) during the past 25 years. Mechanical alloying, a high energy ball milling process, has established itself as a viable solid state processing route for the synthesis of a variety of equilibrium and non-equilibrium phases and phase mixtures. The process was initially invented for the production of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Ni-base superalloys and later extended to other ODS alloys. The success of MA in producing ODS alloys with better high temperature capabilities in comparison with other processing routes is highlighted. Mechanical alloying has also been successfully used for extending terminal solid solubilities in many commercially important metallic systems. Many high melting intermetallics that are difficult to prepare by conventional processing techniques could be easily synthesised with homogeneous structure and composition by MA. It has also, over the years, proved itself to be superior to rapid solidification processing as a non-equilibrium processing tool. The considerable literature on the synthesis of amorphous, quasicrystalline, and nanocrystalline materials by MA is critically reviewed. The possibility of achieving solid solubility in liquid immiscible systems has made MA a unique process. Reactive milling has opened new avenues for the solid state metallothermic reduction and for the synthesis of nanocrystalline intermetallics and intermetallic matrix composites. Despite numerous efforts, understanding of the process of MA, being far from equilibrium, is far from complete, leaving large scope for further research in this exciting field.

A novel phase of nickel hydroxide with an average interlayer spacing 5.4-5.6 Angstrom has been synthesized which is neither ct nor beta type but is an interstratification of both. It ages to the beta form in strong alkali. These observations have implications on the dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism suggested for the alpha-->beta transformation of nickel hydroxide.

Devitrification of spray pyrolysed, amorphous ZrO2-Al2O3 solid solution produces nanocrystalline microstructures (grain sizes 10-20 nm). In this study, spray pyrolysed amorphous ZrO2-40 mol% Al2O3 powder displayed good sinterability during decomposition, after spraying, of the nitrate precursors up to 1023K. Hot pressing of fully pyrolysed, pre-sintered (more than 70% dense) pellets at 923K and 750 MPa produced an amorphous pellet with less than 2% porosity. The results indicate the possibility of producing dense, amorphous pellets that can be heat treated further to produce nanocrystalline microstructures conducive for superplasticity.

We point out how fluctuation of the phase of the superconducting order parameter can play a key role in our understanding of high Te superconductors. A simple universal criterion is given which illustrates why all oxide superconductors in contrast to classical superconductors ought to behave as a lattice of cooper pairs. T-c is to be thought of as the temperature of phase coherence or the temperature above which the lattice of Cooperpair 'melts' into a phase of Cooper-pair droplets that starts forming at T approximate to T-* . This is the pseudo-gap region. Quantum fluctuation of the phase predicts a superconductor to insulator phase transition for all underdoped materials.

A layered double hydroxide (LDH) with chemical composition LiAl2(OH)(7) . 2H(2)O was prepared via a wet chemical route of gel to crystallite (G-C) conversion at 80 degrees C involving the reaction of hydrated alumina gel, Al2O3.yH(2)O (80 < y < 120) with LiOH (Li2O/Al2O3 greater than or equal to 0.5) in presence of hydrophilic solvents such as ethanol under refluxing conditions. The hydrothermal synthesis was carried out using the same reactants by heating to less than or equal to 140 degrees C in a Teflon-lined autoclave under autogenerated pressure (less than or equal to 20 MPa). Transmission electron microscopy showed needle-shaped aggregates of size 0.04-0.1 mu m for the gel to crystallite conversion product, whereas the hydrothermal products consisted of individual lamellar crystallites of size 0.2-0.5 mu m with hexagonal morphology. The LDH prepared through the gel to crystallite conversion could be converted into LiAl(OH)(4) . H2O or LiAl(OH)(3)NO3 . H2O by imbibition of LiOH or LiNO3, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. Thermal decomposition of LDH above 1400 degrees C gave rise to LiAl5O8 accompanied by the evaporation of Li2O. LiAl(OH)(4) . H2O and LiAl(OH)(3)NO3 . H2O decomposed in the temperature range 400-1000 degrees C to alpha- or beta-LiAlO2. The compositional dependence of the product, the intermediate phases formed during the heat treatment and the possible reactions involved are described in detail.

Nanometric granular materials represent a new class of materials with significant promise. We shall discuss in this paper two phase granular materials where one of the phases having nanometric dimension is embedded in a matrix of larger dimension. These materials show many interesting properties which include structural, magnetic and transport properties, The phase transformation of the embedded particles shows distinctive behavior and yields new insight. We shall first highlight the strategy of synthesis of these materials through rapid solidification. This will be followed by three examples where the nanoscale dimension of the embedded particles play a unique role. These are melting and solidification of the nanodispersed embedded particles and the superconducting transition. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Thermodynamic constraints on component chemical potentials in three-phase fields introduced by the various isograms suggested in the literature are derived for a ternary system containing compounds. When compositions of two compounds lie on an isogram, it is associated with specific characteristics which can be used to obtain further understanding of the interplay of thermodynamic factors that determine phase equilibria. When two compounds are shared by adjacent three-phase fields, the constraints are dictated by binary compositions generated by the intersection of a line passing through the shared compounds with the sides of the ternary triangle. Generalized expressions for an arbitrary line through the triangle are presented. These are consistent with special relations obtained along Kohler, Colinet and Jacob isograms. Five axioms are introduced and proved. They provide valuable tools for checking consistency of thermodynamic measurements and for deriving thermodynamic properties from phase diagrams. We perform computer simulations of a Cahn-Hilliard model of phase separation that has dynamical asymmetry between the two coexisting phases. The dynamical asymmetry is incorporated by considering a mobility function that is order parameter dependent. Simulations of this model reveal morphological features similar to those observed in viscoelastic phase separation. In the early stages, the minority phase domains form a percolating structure that shrinks with time, eventually leading to the formation of disconnected regions that are characterized by the presence of random interfaces as well as isolated droplets. The domains grow as L(t)similar to t(1/3) in the very late stages. Although dynamical scaling is violated in the area shrinking regime, it is restored at late times. However, the form of the scaling function is found to depend on the extent of dynamical asymmetry. [S1063-651X(99)12101-9].

Single crystals of Bi2V1-xGexO5.5-x/2 (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were grown by slow cooling of melts. Bismuth vanadate transforms from an orthorhombic to a tetragonal structure and subsequently to an orthorhombic system when the Ge4+ concentration was varied from x = 0.2 to x = 0.6. All of these compositions crystallized in polar space groups (Aba2, F4mm, and Fmm2 for x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6, respectively). The structures were fully determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Fine particles of willemite, alpha -Zn2SiO4, were prepared by both solution combustion and sol-gel methods. Both processes yield single-phase, large-surface area (26- and 78-m(2)/g), sinteractive willemite powders. Thermal evolution of crystalline phases was studied using X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The combustion method favors low-temperature formation of willemite compared to the sol-gel method. The powders, when uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1300 degreesC, achieved 78-80% theoretical density. The microstructures of the sintered body show the presence of equiaxed 0.5- to 4-mum grains. Blue pigments of willemite doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ were also prepared by the combustion process.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. Incremental diffusion couple experiments are conducted to determine the average interdiffusion coefficient and the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of the species in the Ni6Nb7 (mu phase) in the Ni-Nb system. Further, the tracer diffusion coefficients are calculated from the knowledge of thermodynamic parameters. The diffusion rate of Ni is found to be higher than that of Nb, which indicates higher defect concentration in the Ni sublattice.

Glasses of various compositions in the system (100 - x)Li-2 B-4 O-7 - x (SrO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (10 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 60) (in molar ratio) were prepared via a conventional melt-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopic (TEM) studies confirmed the amorphous nature of the as quenched and crystallinity in the heat-treated samples. The formation of nanocrystalline layered perovskite SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) phase, in the samples heat-treated at temperatures higher than 550degreesC, through an intermediate fluorite phase in the LBO glass matrix was confirmed by both the XRD and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The samples that were heat-treated at two different temperatures, 550 and 625degreesC, (containing 0.35 and 0.47 mum sized SBN crystallites) exhibited broad dielectric anomalies in the vicinity of ferroelectric to paraelectric transition temperature of the parent SBN ceramics. A downward shift in the phase transition temperature was observed with decreasing crystallite size of SBN. The observation of pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties for the present samples confirmed their polar nature.

An isothermal section of the phase diagram for the system Eu - Pd - O at 1223 K has been established by equilibration of samples representing 20 different compositions, and phase identification after quenching by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Three ternary oxides, Eu4PdO7, Eu2PdO4, and Eu2Pd2O5, were identified. Liquid alloys and the intermetallic compounds EuPd2 and EuPd3 were found to be in equilibrium with EuO. The compound EuPd3 was also found to coexist separately with Eu3O4 and Eu2O3. The oxide phase in equilibrium with EuPd5 and Pd rich solid solution was Eu2O3. Based on the phase relations, four solid state cells were designed to measure the Gibbs energies of formation of the three ternary oxides in the temperature range from 925 to 1350 K. Although three cells are sufficient to obtain the properties of the three compounds, the fourth cell was deployed to crosscheck the data. An advanced version of the solid state cell incorporating a buffer electrode with yttria stabilised zirconia solid electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at a pressure of 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode was used for high temperature thermodynamic measurements. Equations for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of the interoxide compounds from their component binary oxides Eu2O3 with C type structure and PdO have been established. Based on the thermodynamic information, isothermal chemical potential diagrams and isobaric phase diagrams for the system Eu - Pd - O have been developed.
