The present study reports the results of the detailed in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties of the hydroxyapatite (HA) and the HA-titanium (HA-Ti) composite with varying amount of Ti (5, 10, and 20 wt %), densified using spark plasma sintering process (SPS). Using this technique and tailoring suitable processing parameters, it has been possible to retain both HA and Ti in the sintered ceramics. Importantly, the uniquely designed SPS processing with suitably chosen parameters enables in achieving better mechanical properties, such as higher indentation fracture toughness (similar to 1.5 MPa m1/2) in HA-Ti composites compared with HA. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations reveal good bioactivity of the HA-Ti composites with the formation of thick, flaky, and porous apatite layer when immersed in simulated body fluid at 37 degrees C and pH of 7.4. Atomic absorption spectroscopic analysis of the simulated body fluid solution reveals dynamic changes in Ca+2 ion concentration with more dissolution of Ca+2 ion from the HA-20Ti composite. However, the measurements with inductively coupled plasma spectrometer do not record dissolution of Ti+4 ions. Transmission electron microscopic analysis indicates weak crystalline nature of the apatite and confirms the formation of fine-scale apatite crystals. MTT assay, fluorescence, and SEM study demonstrate good cell viability and cell adhesion/proliferation of the Saos -2 cells, cultured on the developed composites under standard culture condition, and the difference in cell viability has been discussed in reference to substrate composition and roughness. Overall, HA-Ti composites exhibit comparable and even better in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties than HA. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ceramic/Porcelain insulators are widely used in power transmission lines to provide mechanical support for High voltage conductors in addition to withstand electrical stresses. As a result of lightning, switching or temporary over voltages that could initiate flashover under worst weather conditions, and to operate within interference limits. Given that the useful life in service of the individual insulator elements making up the insulator strings is hard to predict, they must be verified periodically to ensure that adequate line reliability is maintained at all times. Over the years utilities have adopted few methods to detect defective discs in a string, subsequently replacement of the faulty discs are being carried out for smooth operation. But, if the insulator is found to be defective in a string at some location that may not create any changes in the field configuration, there is no need to replace to avoid manpower and cost of replacement. Due to deficiency of electric field data for the existing string configuration, utilities are forced to replace the discs which may not be essentially required. Hence, effort is made in the present work to simulate the potential and electric field along the normal and with faults induced discs in a string up to 765 kV system voltages using Surface Charge Simulation Method (SCSM). A comparison is made between simulated results, experimental and field data and it was found that the computed results are quite acceptable and useful.

The present work demonstrates the synthesis of Cu-10 wt% TiB2 composites with a theoretical density of more than 90% by tailoring the spark plasma sintering (SPS) conditions in the temperature range of 400-700 degrees C. Interestingly, 10 wt% Pb addition to Cu-10 wt% TiB2 lowers the sinter density and the difference in the densification behavior of the investigated compositions was discussed in reference to the current profile recorded during a SPS cycle. The sintering kinetics and phase assemblage were also discussed in reference to surface melting of the constituents prior to bulk melting temperature, temperature dependent wettability of Pb on Cu, diffusion kinetics of Cu as well as the formation of various oxides. An important result is that a high hardness of around 2 GPa and relative density close to 92% qtheoretical was achieved for the Cu-10 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composite, and such a combination has never been achieved before using any conventional processing route.

Carbonaceous nickel oxide powder samples have been synthesized from an adducted nickel beta-ketoester complex used as a ``single source precursor'' through a solution-based microwave-assisted chemical route. Comprehensive analysis of the resulting powder material has been carried out using various characterization techniques. These analysis reveal that, depending on the solvent used, either NiO/C or Ni/NiO/C composites are formed, wherein Ni and/or NiO nanocrystals are enveloped in amorphous carbon. As the components emerge from the same molecular source, the composites are homogeneous on a fine scale, making them promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Electrochemical capacitive behavior of these oxide composites is studied in a three-electrode configuration. With a specific capacitance of 113 F g(-1), Ni/NiO/C is superior to NiO/C as capacitor electrode material, in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. This is confirmed by impedance measurements, which show that charge-transfer resistance and equivalent series resistance are lower in Ni/NiO/C than in NiO/C, presumably because of the presence of metallic nickel in the former. The cyclic voltammograms are nearly rectangular and the electrodes display excellent cyclability in different electrolytes: Na2SO4, KOH and Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O. Specific capacitance as high as 143 F g(-1), is measured in Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O electrolyte.

A novel composite architecture consisting of a periodic arrangement of closely-spaced spheres of a stiff material embedded in a soft matrix is proposed for extremely high damping and shock absorption capacity. Efficacy of this architecture is demonstrated by compression loading a composite, where multiple steel balls were stacked upon each other in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, at a low strain-rate of 0.05 s(-1) and a very high strain-rate of >2400 s(-1). The balls slide over each other upon loading, and revert to their original position when the load is removed. Because of imposition of additional strains into the matrix via this reversible, constrained movement of the balls, the composite absorbs significantly larger energy and endures much lesser permanent damage than the monolithic PDMS during both quasi-static and impact loadings. During the impact loading, energy absorbed per unit weight for the composite was, 8 times larger than the monolithic PDMS.

Among various biologically compatible materials, hydroxyapatite (HA) has excellent bioactivity/osteointegration properties and therefore has been extensively investigated for biomedical applications. However, its inferior fracture toughness limits the wider applications of monolithic HA as a load-bearing implant. To this end, HA-based biocomposites have been developed to improve their mechanical properties (toughness and strength) without compromising biocompatibility. Despite significant efforts over last few decades, the toughness of HA-based composites could not be enhanced beyond 1.5-2 MPa m(1/2), even when measured using indentation techniques. In this perspective, the present work demonstrates how spark plasma sintering can be effectively utilized to develop hydroxyapatite titanium (HA-Ti) composites with varying amounts of Ti (5, 10 and 20 wt.%) with extremely high single edge V-notch beam fracture toughness (4-5 MPa m(1/2)) along with a good combination of elastic modulus and flexural strength. Despite predominant retention of HA and Ti, the combination of critical analysis of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigation confirmed the formation of the CaTi4(PO4)(6) phase with nanoscale morphology at the HA/Ti interface and the formation of such a phase has been discussed in reference to possible sintering reactions. The variations in the measured fracture toughness and work of fracture with Ti addition to the HA matrix were further rationalized using the analytical models of crack bridging as well as on the basis of the additional contribution from crack deflection. The present work opens up the opportunity to further enhance the toughness beyond 5 MPa m(1/2) by microstructural designing with the desired combination of toughening phases. Composites of graphene involving chemically bonded nano films of metal oxides have been prepared by reacting graphene containing surface oxygen functionalities with metal halide vapours followed by exposure to water vapour. The composites have been characterized by electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and other techniques. Magnetite particles chemically bonded to graphene dispersible in various solvents have been prepared and they exhibit fairly high magnetization.

Damaged articulating joints can be repaired or replaced with synthetic biomaterials, which can release wear debris due to articulation, leading to the osteolysis. In a recent work, it has been shown that it is possible to achieve a better combination of flexural strength/fracture toughness as well as in vitro bioactivity and cytocompatibility properties in spark plasma sintered hydroxyapatite-titanium (HA-Ti) composites. Although hydroxyapatite and titanium are well documented for their good biocompatibility, nanosized hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium (Ti) particles can cause severe toxicity to cells. In order to address this issue, fretting wear study of HA-Ti composites under dry and wet (1x SBF, supplemented with 5 g l(-1) bovine serum albumin (BSA)) condition was performed to assess the wear resistance as well as wear debris formation, in vitro. The experimental results reveal one order of magnitude lower wear rate for HA-10 wt% Ti (7.5 x 10(-5) mm(3) N-1 m(-1)) composite than monolithic HA (3.9 x 10(-4) mm(3) N-1 m(-1)) in simulated body fluid. The difference in the tribological properties has been analyzed in the light of phase assemblages and mechanical properties. Overall, the results suggest the potential use of HA-Ti composites over existing HA-based biocomposites in orthopedic as well as dental applications.

Electromagnetic field interactions with the composites made up of polyaniline (PANI) and single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) are simulated using the discrete dipole approximation. Recent observations on polymer nano-composites explain the interface interactions between the PANI host and the carbon nanostructures. These types of composite have potential applications in organic solar cell, gas sensor, bio-sensor and electro-chromic devices. Various nanostructures of PANI is possible in the form of nanowires, nanodisks, nanofibers and nanotubes have been reported. In the present study, we considered two types of composite, one is the PANI wrapped CNT and the other is CNT immersed in PANI nanotube. We use Modified Thole's parameters for calculating frequency dependent atomic polarizability of composites. Absorption spectra of the composites are studied by illuminating a wide range of electromagnetic energy spectrum. From the absorption spectra, we observe plasmon excitation in near-infrared region similar to that in SWCNTs reported recently. The interactions between the PANI and CNT in the composite, resulting electromagnetic absorptions are simulated.

Although HA is highly biocompatible, one of the major disadvantages of HA include the lack of antibacterial property. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the potential role of magnetic field stimulation on bactericidal property in vitro. Following this, it was hypothesized that antibacterial property can be realized if bacteria are grown on magnetic biocomposites in vitro. In addressing this issue, this study demonstrates the development of HA-Fe3O4-based magnetic substrate with multifunctional properties. For this purpose, HA-xFe(3)O(4) (x: 10, 20 and 40wt%) powder compositions were sintered using uniquely designed spark plasma sintering conditions (three stage sintering with final holding temperature of 1050 degrees C for 5min). A saturation magnetization of 24emu/g is measured with HA-40%Fe3O4. Importantly, all the HA-Fe3O4 composites demonstrated bactericidal property by rupturing the membrane of Escherichia coli bacteria, while supporting cell growth of metabolically active human fetal osteoblast cells over 8d culture. A systematic decrease in bacterial viability with Fe3O4 addition is consistent with a commensurate increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS).

In developing materials with better tribological properties, it is always conceived that the addition of softer phase would result in better frictional behavior. In order to address this issue, we report here the results of fretting wear study on Cu-10 wt% TiB2 and Cu-10 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composites, sintered using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. It was found out that the addition of softer phase i.e. 10 wt % Pb to Cu-10 wt% TiB2 composites has not resulted in the lowering of the coefficient of friction (COF). The combination of steady state COF (0.6) and wear rate (10(-3) mm(3)/N-m) was measured and such properties are even better than that obtained with TiB2 coatings reported in the literature. For Cu-10 wt% TiB2 sintered at different temperature, a lower wear resistance with increase in hardness is being measured. An attempt has been made to correlate the observed wear behavior with the surface and subsurface deformation. The formation of a wear-resistant delaminated tribolayer consisting of TiB2 particles and ultrafine oxide debris (Cu, Fe, Ti)(x)O-y was the reason assigned for the observed low wear rate of these composites. This work reports the processing-microstructure-property correlation of novel HA-BaTiO3-based piezobiocomposites, which demonstrated the bone-mimicking functional properties. A series of composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) with varying amounts of piezoelectric BaTiO3 (BT) were optimally processed using uniquely designed multistage spark plasma sintering (SPS) route. Transmission electron microscopy imaging during in situ heating provides complementary information on the real-time observation of sintering behavior. Ultrafine grains (0.50m) of HA and BT phases were predominantly retained in the SPSed samples. The experimental results revealed that dielectric constant, AC conductivity, piezoelectric strain coefficient, compressive strength, and modulus values of HA-40wt% BT closely resembles with that of the natural bone. The addition of 40wt% BT enhances the long-crack fracture toughness, compressive strength, and modulus by 132%, 200%, and 165%, respectively, with respect to HA. The above-mentioned exceptional combination of functional properties potentially establishes HA-40wt% BT piezocomposite as a new-generation composite for orthopedic implant applications.

Magneto-electric composites comprising Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) and MnFe2O4 (MFO) were fabricated using their fine powders obtained via sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy results confirmed the single-phase formation of NBT and MFO and the composite nature when these were mixed and sintered at appropriate temperatures. The dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and dielectric loss (D) decreased with increase in frequency (40-110 MHz). Room temperature magnetization measurements established these composites to be soft magnetic. Further, the nature of these composites were established to be magneto-electric at 300 K. The highest ME response of 0.19 % was observed in 30NBT-70MFO composite. The ME coefficient (alpha) was 240 mV/cm Oe for the same composition. The present study demonstrated the effectiveness of NBT/MFO as a lead-free multiferroic composite and provides an alternative for environment-friendly ME device applications.

In view of the fact that bone healing can be enhanced due to external electric field application, it is important to assess the influence of the implant conductivity on the bone regeneration in vivo. To address this issue, this study reports the in vivo biocompatibility property of multistage spark plasma sintered hydroxyapatite (HA)-80 wt % calcium titanate (CaTiO3) composites and monolithic HA, which have widely different conductivity property (14 orders of magnitude difference). The ability of bone regeneration was assessed by implantation in cylindrical femoral bone defects of rabbit animal model for varying time period of 1, 4, and 12 weeks. The overall assessment of the histology results suggests that the progressive healing of bone defects around HA-80 wt % CaTiO3 is associated with a better efficacy with respect to (w.r.t) early stage neobone formation, which is histomorphometrically around 140% higher than monolithic HA. Overall, this study demonstrates that the in vivo biocompatibility property of HA-80 wt % CaTiO3 with respect to local effects after 12 weeks of implantation is not compromised both qualitatively and quantitatively, and a comparison with control implant (HA) points toward the critical role of electrical conductivity on better early stage bone regeneration.
