Two storey bilinear hysteretic structures have been studied with a view to exploring the possibility of using the dynamic vibration absorber concept in earthquake-resistant design. The response of the lower storey has been optimized for the Taft 1952, S69°E accelerogram with reference to parameters such as frequency ratio, yield strength ratio and mass ratio. The influence of viscous damping has also been examined.

Modelling of city traffic involves capturing of all the dynamics that exist in real-time traffic. Probabilistic models and queuing theory have been used for mathematical representation of the traffic system. This paper proposes the concept of modelling the traffic system using bond graphs wherein traffic flow is based on energy conservation. The proposed modelling approach uses switched junctions to model complex traffic networks. This paper presents the modelling, simulation and experimental validation aspects.

We observe a sharp feature in the ultra-low-temperature magnetoconductivity of degenerately doped Ge:Sb at H∼25 kOe, which is robust up to at least three times the critical density for the insulator-metal transition. This field corresponds to a low-energy scale characteristic of the special nature of antimony donors in germanium. Its presence and sensitivity to uniaxial stress confirm the notion of metallic impurity bands in doped germanium.

Various factore controlling the preferred facial selectivity in the reductions of a number of sterically unbiased ketones have been evaluated using a semiempirical MO procedure. MNDO optimized geometries do not reveal any significant ground-state distortions which can be correlated with the observed face selectivities. Electrostatic effecta due to an approaching reagent were modeled by placing a test negative charge at a fixed distance from the carbonyl carbon on each of the two faces. A second series of calculations was carried out using the hydride ion as a test nucleophile. The latter calculations effectively include orbital interactions involving the u and u* orbitals of the newly formed bond in the reaction. The computed energy differences with the charge model are generally much larger compared to those with the hydride ion. However, both models lead to predictions which are qualitatively consistent with the experimentally determined facial preferences for most of the systems. Thus, electrostatic interactions between the nucleophile and the substrate seem to effectively determine the face selectivities in these molecules. However, there are a few exceptions in which orbital interactions are found to contribute significantly and occasionally reverse the preference dictated by electrostatic effecta. The remarkable succew of the hydride model calculations, in spite of retaining the unperturbed geometries of the substrates, points to the unimportance of torsional effeds and orbital distortions associated with the pyramidalized carbonyl unit in the transition state in most of the substrates considered. Additional experimental results are reported which provide useful calibration for the present computational approach.

Both semiempirical and ab initio calculations are reported for conformational studies of a series of alpha-substituted acetones CH3COCH2XCH3 where X = CH2, O or S and of phenacyl sulfide PhCOCH2SCH3. For conformational studies in the lowest triplet state of these molecules, the MINDO/3 method was employed in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock frame. Results reveal that rotation around a bond alpha to the carbonyl group is more favourable than that around the beta bond. The preferred conformations in the lowest triplet state are nearly the same as in the ground state.

The electronic excitations and fluorescence of conjugated polymers are related to large or small alternation ? of the transfer integrals t(1 ± ?) along the backbone. The fluorescence of polysilanes (PSs) and poly (para-phenylenevinylene (PPV) is linked to large ?, which places the one-photon gap Eg below the lowest two-photon gap Ea and reduces distortions due to electron-phonon (e-p) coupling. In contrast to small ? not, vert, similar 0.1 in ?-conjugated polymers, such as polyacetylene (PA), para-conjugated phenyls lead to an extended ?-system with increased alternation, to states localized on each ring and to charge-transfer excitations between them. Surprisingly good agreement is found between semiempirical parametric method 3 (PM3) bond lengths and exact Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) ?-bond orders for trans-stilbene, where the PPV bipolarons are confined to two phenyls. Stilbene spectra are consistent with increased alternation and small e-p distortions.

We have investigated the electronic structure of well-characterized samples of La1-xSrxFeO3 (x=0.00.4) by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, bremsstrahlung isochromat (BI) spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. We find systematic behavior in the occupied and unoccupied density of states reflecting changes in the electronic structure on hole doping via Sr substitution as well as providing estimates for different interaction strengths. The spectral features, particularly of the unoccupied states obtained from BI spectra, indicate the probable reason for the absence of an insulator-metal transition in this series. Analysis of the Auger spectra provides the estimates of the on-site effective Coulomb interaction strengths in Fe 3d and O 2p states. The parameter values for the bare charge-transfer energy ? and the Fe 3dO 2p hybridization strength t? for LaFeO3 are obtained from an analysis of the Fe 2p core-level XPS in terms of a model many-body calculation. We discuss the character of the ground state in LaFeO3 as well as the nature of the doped hole states in La1-xSrxFeO3, based on these parameter values.

We study the electronic structure of La1-xSrxMnO3+δ, x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4, across the semiconductor-metal transition, using various electron spectroscopy techniques. The negligible intensity seen at EF using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy (BIS) indicate an unusual semiconductor-metal transition observed for x≥0.2, consistent with the resistivity data. The BIS spectra show doped hole states developing about 1.4 eV above EF as a function of x. Auger electron spectroscopy gives an estimate of the intra-atomic Coulomb energy in the O 2p manifold to be about 6.8 eV. The Mn 2p core-level spectrum of LaMnO3, analyzed in terms of a configuration-interaction calculation, gives parameter values of the charge-transfer energy Δ=5.0 eV, the hybridization strength between Mn 3d and O 2p states, t=3.8 eV, and the on-site Coulomb energy in Mn 3d states Udd=4.0 eV, suggesting a mixed character for the ground state of LaMnO3.

The pi-electronic structure of anthracene is discussed by combining exact solutions of the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and semiempirical PM3 calculations. Symmetry adaptation of the 2.8 million singlet valence-bond (VB) diagrams is explicitly demonstrated for D2h and electron-hole symmetry. Standard PPP parameters provide a comprehensive fit to one- and two-photon anthracene spectra and intensities up to the strong 1 B-1(3u)-absorption at 5.24 eV, the 10th excited state in the dense correlated spectrum, and indicate a reassignment of two-photon absorptions. The singlet-triplet gap and fine-structure constants also agree with experiment. Fully-relaxed PM3 geometries are obtained for the anthracene ground state and for singlet, triplet, and charged bipolarons. The PM3 bond lengths correlate well with PPP bond orders for the idealized structure. Single-determinantal PM3 excitation and relaxation energies for bipolarons are consistent with exact PPP results and contrast all-valence electron with pi-electron calculations. Several correlation effects are noted in the rich pi-spectra of anthracene in connection with improved PPP modeling of conjugated molecules and polymers.

The π-electronic excitations and excited-state geometries of trans-stilbene (tS) are found by combining exact solutions of the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and semiempirical Parametric Method 3 (PM3) calculations. Comprehensive comparisons with tS spectra are obtained and related to the fluorescence and topological alternation of poly(paraphenylenevinylene) (PPV). The one-photon absorption and triplet of tS correspond, respectively, to singlet and triplet bipolarons confined to two phenyls, while the tS2- ground state is a confined charged bipolaron. Independent estimates of the relaxation energy between vertical and adiabatic excitation show the bipolaron binding energy to depend on both charge and spin, as expected for interacting π electrons in correlated or molecular states. Complete configuration interaction within the PPP model of tS accounts for the singlet-triplet gap, for the fine-structure constants and triplet-triplet spectra, for two-photon transitions and intensities, and for one-photon spectra and the radiative lifetime, although the relative position of nearly degenerate covalent and ionic singlets is not resolved. The planar PM3 geometry and low rotational barrier of tS agree with resolved rotational and vibrational spectra in molecular beams. PM3 excitation and relaxation energies for tS bipolarons are consistent with experiment and with PPP results. Instead of the exciton model, we interpret tS excitations in terms of states that are localized on each ring or extended over an alternating chain, as found exactly in Hückel theory, and find nearly degenerate transitions between extended and localized states in the singlet, triplet, and dianion manifolds. The large topological alternation of the extended system increases the ionicity and interchanges the order of the lowest one- and two-photon absorption of PPV relative to polyenes.

Ab initio computations Predict a minimum for a carbon-carbon quadruple bond in C2. While the computed C-C separation, 1.128 angstrom, fits Pauling's bond order-bond length relationship well, this result is an artifact of the restricted Hartree Fock theory.

NDDO-based (AM1) configuration interaction (CI) calculations have been used to calculate the wavelength and oscillator strengths of electronic absorptions in organic molecules and the results used in a sum-over-states treatment to calculate second-order-hyperpolarizabilities. The results for both spectra and hyperpolarizabilities are of acceptable quality as long as a suitable CI-expansion is used. We have found that using an active space of eight electrons in eight orbitals and including all single and pair-double excitations in the CI leads to results that agree well with experiment and that do not change significantly with increasing active space for most organic molecules. Calculated second-order hyperpolarizabilities using this type of CI within a sum-over-states calculation appear to be of useful accuracy.
