This article presents the details of estimation of fracture parameters for high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Brief details about characterization of ingredients of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Experiments have been carried out on beams made up of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC considering various sizes and notch depths. Fracture characteristics such as size independent fracture energy (G(f)), size of fracture process zone (C-f), fracture toughness (K-IC) and crack tip opening displacement (CTODc) have been estimated based on the experimental observations. From the studies, it is observed that (i) UHSC has high fracture energy and ductility inspite of having a very low value of C-f; (ii) relatively much more homogeneous than other concretes, because of absence of coarse aggregates and well-graded smaller size particles; (iii) the critical SIF (K-IC) values are increasing with increase of beam depth and decreasing with increase of notch depth. Generally, it can be noted that there is significant increase in fracture toughness and CTODc. They are about 7 times in HSC1 and about 10 times in UHSC compared to those in HSC; (iv) for notch-to-depth ratio 0.1, Bazant's size effect model slightly overestimates the maximum failure loads compared to experimental observations and Karihaloo's model slightly underestimates the maximum failure loads. For the notch-to-depth ratio ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 for the case of UHSC, it can be observed that, both the size effect models predict more or less similar maximum failure loads compared to corresponding experimental values.

Lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li2MnO3) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing Pluronic acid (P123) as a soft template and studied as a positive electrode material. The as-prepared sample possesses good crystalline structure with a broadly distributed mesoporosity but low surface area. As expected, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge data indicate poor electrochemical activity. However, the sample gains surface area with narrowly distributed mesoporosity and also electrochemical activity after treating in 4 M H2SO4. A discharge capacity of about 160 mAh g(-1) is obtained. When the acid-treated sample is heated at 300 A degrees C, the resulting porous sample with a large surface area and dual porosity provides a discharge capacity of 240 mAh g(-1). The rate capability study suggests that the sample provides about 150 mAh g(-1) at a specific discharge current of 1.25 A g(-1). Although the cycling stability is poor, the high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the material.

We report the synthesis of Pr6O11 microspheres self-assembled from ultra-small nanocrystals formed by the microwave irradiation of a solution of a salt of Pr in ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared product consists of microspheres measuring 200 to 500 nm in diameter and made of <5 nm nano-crystallites. The surface of these microspheres/nanocrystals is covered/capped with an organic layer of ethylene glycol as shown by TEM analysis and confirmed by IR spectroscopy measurements. The as-prepared product shows blue-green emission under excitation, which changes to orange-red when the product is annealed in air at 600 degrees C for 2 h. This change in luminescence behaviour can be attributed to presence of ethylene glycol layer in the as-prepared product. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), IR Spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The fracture characteristics of Al-Si based eutectic alloy are investigated in the unmodified and modified conditions under compression. The investigations are carried out at different strain rates and temperatures. Fracture of the alloy starts with eutectic Si particle fracture and modification plays an important role in particle fracture. The fraction of fractured particles is found to be always lesser in the modified condition than in the unmodified condition. Particle fracture increases with increase in strain. It is found that the Si particle fracture shows an increase with increase in strain rate and decreases with increase in temperature at 10% strain. Large and elongated particles show a greater tendency for fracture in the unmodified and modified conditions. Particle orientation plays an important role on fracture and the cracks are found to occur almost in a direction normal to the tensile strain imposed upon the particles by the deforming matrix in the unmodified alloy. The modified alloy shows a random distribution of fractured particles and crack orientation. The criteria of fracture based on dislocation pile-up mechanism and fiber loading explain the observed difference in particle fracture characteristics due to modification. The particle fracture for the modified alloy is also discussed in terms of Weibull statistics and the existing models of dispersion hardening. Particle/matrix interface decohesion is observed at higher strain rates and temperatures in the modified alloy. Dendritic rotation of 10 degrees is also observed at higher strain rates, which can increase the amount of particle fracture. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A fracture mechanism map (FMM) is a powerful tool which correlates the fracture behavior of a material to its microstructural characteristics in an explicit and convenient way. In the FMM for solder joints, an effective thickness of the interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) layer (t (eff)) and the solder yield strength (sigma (ys,eff)) are used as abscissa and ordinate axes, respectively, as these two predominantly affect the fracture behavior of solder joints. Earlier, a definition of t (eff), based on the uniform thickness of IMC (t (u)) and the average height of the IMC scallops (t (s)), was proposed and shown to aptly explain the fracture behavior of solder joints on Cu. This paper presents a more general definition of t (eff) that is more widely applicable to a range of metallizations, including Cu and electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG). Using this new definition of t (eff), mode I FMM for SAC387/Cu joints has been updated and its validity was confirmed. A preliminary FMM for SAC387/Cu joints with ENIG metallization is also presented.

In this work, the fracture behavior of magnesium single crystals is studied by conducting experiments with notched three point bend specimens of three crystallographic orientations. In the first and second orientations, the c-axis is along the normal to the flat surface of the notch, while in the third it is aligned with the notch front. For all the orientations, in situ electron back scattered diffraction observations made around the notch root show profuse tensile twinning of {10 (1) over bar2} type. Further, in the first two orientations basal and prismatic slip traces are identified from optical metallography. The width of the most prominent twin saturates at around 120-150 mu m, while twins continue to nucleate farther away to accommodate plastic deformation. In all the orientations, crack initiation occurs before the attainment of peak load and the crack grows stably along twin-matrix interface before deflecting at twin-twin intersections. Results show that profuse tensile twinning is an important energy dissipating mechanism that enhances the fracture toughness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Rapid and facile synthesis of similar to 7 nm and similar to 100-400 nm nano-structures of anatase titania is achieved by exploiting the chemical nature of solvents through a microwave based approach. After using these nanostructures as a photoanode in dye-sensitized solar cells, a modest yet appreciable efficiency of 6.5% was achieved under the illumination of AM 1.5 G one sun (100 mW cm(-2)).

A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3O2 (composition: Li1.2Mn0.53Ni0.13Co0.13O2) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing a soft polymer template and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores of about 30 nm diameters. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as in surface area by increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C are about 250 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 40 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. A value of 225 mAh g(-1) is obtained at the end of 30 charge-discharge cycles. Both these composite samples possess high rate capability, but the 800 degrees C sample is marginally superior to the 900 degrees C sample. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a specific current of 1000 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite samples. Free-standing Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coats exhibit a linear stress strain response under tensile loading and undergo brittle cleavage fracture at temperatures below the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (BDTT). Above the BDTT, these coatings show yielding and fail in a ductile manner. In this paper, the various micromechanisms affecting the tensile fracture stress (FS) below the BDTT and yield strength (YS) above the BDTT in a PtAl bond coat have been ascertained and quantified at various temperatures. The micromechanisms have been identified by carrying out microtensile testing of stand-alone PtAl coating specimens containing different levels of Pt at temperatures between room temperature and 1100 degrees C and correlation of the corresponding fracture mechanisms with the deformation substructure in the coating. An important aspect of the influence of Pt on the tensile behavior, slip characteristics, FS/YS and BDTT in the PtAl coating has also been examined. The addition of Pt enhances the FS of the coating by Pt solid solution strengthening and imparts a concomitant increase in fracture toughness and yet causes a significant increase in the BDTT of the coating. Peripherally triarylborane decorated porphyrin (2) and its Zn(II) complex (3) have been synthesized. Compound 3 contains of two different Lewis acidic binding sites (Zn(II) and boron center). Unlike all previously known triarylborane based sensors, the optical responses of 3 toward fluoride and cyanide are distinctively different, thus enabling the discrimination of these two interfering anions. Metalloporphyrin 3 shows a multiple channel fluorogenic response toward fluoride and cyanide and also a selective visual colorimetric response toward cyanide. By comparison with model systems and from detailed photophysical studies on 2 and 3, we conclude that the preferential binding of fluoride occurs at the peripheral borane moieties resulting in the cessation of the EET (electronic energy transfer) process from borane to porphyrin core and with negligible negetive cooperative effects. On the other hand, cyanide binding occurs at the Zn(II) core leading to drastic changes in its absorption behavior which can be followed by the naked eye. Such changes are not observed when the boryl substituent is absent (e.g., Zn-TPP and TPP). Compounds 2 and 3 were also found to be capable of extracting fluoride from aqueous medium.

We report a novel, rapid, and low-temperature method for the synthesis of undoped and Eu-doped GdOOH spherical hierarchical structures, without using any structure-directing agents, through the microwave irradiation route. The as-prepared product consists of nearly monodisperse microspheres measuring about 1.3 mu m in diameter. Electron microscopy reveals that each microsphere is an assembly of two-dimensional nanoflakes (about 30 nm thin) which, in turn, result from the assembly of crystallites measuring about 9 nm in diameter. Thus, a three-level hierarchy can be seen in the formation of the GdOOH microspheres: from nanoparticles to 2D nanoflakes to 3D spherical structures. When doped with Eu3+ ions, the GdOOH microspheres show a strong red emission, making them promising candidates as phosphors. Finally, thermal conversion at modest temperatures leads to the formation of corresponding oxide structures with enhanced luminescence, while retaining the spherical morphology of their oxyhydroxide precursor.

Here we present digestive ripening facilitated interatomic diffusion for the phase controlled synthesis of homogeneous intermetallic nanocrystals of Au-Sn system. Au and Sn metal nanoparticles synthesized by a solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method are employed as precursors for the fabrication of AuSn and Au5Sn which are Au-rich Au-Sn intermetallic nanocrystals. By optimizing the stoichiometry of Au and Sn in the reaction mixture, and by employing growth directing agents, the formation of phase pure intermetallic AuSn and Au5Sn nanocrystals could be realized. The as-prepared Au and Sn colloidal nanoparticles and the resulting intermetallic nanocrystals are thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM and STEM-EDS), and optical spectroscopy. The results obtained here demonstrate the potential of solution chemistry which allows synthesizing phase pure Au-Sn intermetallics with tailored morphology.

We demonstrate diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS) in a localized region of a viscoelastically inhomogeneous object by measurement of the intensity autocorrelation g(2)(tau)] that captures only the decay introduced by the temperature-induced Brownian motion in the region. The region is roughly specified by the focal volume of an ultrasound transducer which introduces region specific mechanical vibration owing to insonification. Essential characteristics of the localized non-Markovian dynamics are contained in the decay of the modulation depth M(tau)], introduced by the ultrasound forcing in the focal volume selected, on g(2)(tau). The modulation depth M(tau(i)) at any delay time tau(i) can be measured by short-time Fourier transform of g(2)(tau) and measurement of the magnitude of the spectrum at the ultrasound drive frequency. By following the established theoretical framework of DWS, we are able to connect the decay in M(tau) to the mean-squared displacement (MSD) of scattering centers and the MSD to G*(omega), the complex viscoelastic spectrum. A two-region composite polyvinyl alcohol phantom with different viscoelastic properties is selected for demonstrating local DWS-based recovery of G*(omega) corresponding to these regions from the measured region specific M(tau(i))vs tau(i). The ultrasound-assisted measurement of MSD is verified by simulating, using a generalized Langevin equation (GLE), the dynamics of the particles in the region selected as well as by the usual DWS experiment without the ultrasound. It is shown that whereas the MSD obtained by solving the GLE without the ultrasound forcing agreed with its experimental counterpart covering small and large values of tau, the match was good only in the initial transients in regard to experimental measurements with ultrasound.
