A new solution for unbalanced and nonlinear loads in terms of power circuit topology and controller structure is proposed in this paper. A three-phase four-wire high-frequency ac-link inverter is adopted to cater to such loads. Use of high-frequency transformer results in compact and light-weight systems. The fourth wire is taken out from the midpoint of the isolation transformer in order to avoid the necessity of an extra leg. This makes the converter suitable for unbalanced loads and eliminates the requirements of bulky capacitor in half-bridge inverter. The closed-loop control is carried out in stationary reference frame using proportional + multiresonant controller (three separate resonant controller for fundamental, fifth and seventh harmonic components). The limitations on improving steady-state response of harmonic resonance controllers is investigated and mitigated using a lead-lag compensator. The proposed voltage controller is used along with an inner current loop to ensure excellent performance of the power converter. Simulation studies and experimental results with 1 kVA prototype under nonlinear and unbalanced loading conditions validate the proposed scheme.

Amphiphilic sugars exhibit both lyotropic and thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. Interestingly, in spite of the abundance of chiral centers in amphiphilic sugars, their liquid-crystalline phases do not exhibit macroscopic chirality. Herein, we report on the first observation of macroscopic chirality in sugar-based bolaamphiphiles containing free hydroxyl groups. The manifestation of the chiral smectic C* phase in these bolaamphiphiles has been observed to be critically dependent on the presence of the azobenzene moiety and the suitable length of the methylene spacer. These results imply that by suitable selection of linker groups, mesogenic bolaamphiphiles possessing macroscopic chirality can be designed using a variety of naturally available sugar derivatives.

We have characterized the phase behavior of mixtures of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the organic salt 3-sodium-2-hydroxy naphthoate (SHN) over a wide range of surfactant concentrations using polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A variety of liquid crystalline phases, such as hexagonal, lamellar with and without curvature defects, and nematic, are observed in these mixtures. At high temperatures the curvature defects in the lamellar phase are annealed gradually on decreasing the water content. However, at lower temperatures these two lamellar structures are separated by an intermediate phase, where the bilayer defects appear to order into a lattice. The ternary phase diagram shows a high degree of symmetry about the line corresponding to equimolar CTAB/SHN composition, as in the case of mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants.

In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) algorithms for a split-phase induction machine (SPIM) are established. An SPIM has two sets of three-phase stator windings, with a shift of thirty electrical degrees between them. The significant contributions of this paper are: 1) two new methods of DTC technique for an SPIM are developed, called Resultant Flux Control Method and Individual Flux Control Method and 2) advantages and disadvantages of both methods are discussed. High torque ripple is a disadvantage for three-phase DTC. It is found that torque ripple in an SPIM can be significantly reduced without increasing the switching frequency.

We investigate two equivalent, capacitively coupled semiconducting quantum dots, each coupled to its own lead, in a regime where there are two electrons on the double dot. With increasing interdot coupling, a rich range of behavior is uncovered: first a crossover from spin- to charge-Kondo physics, via an intermediate SU(4) state with entangled spin and charge degrees of freedom, followed by a quantum phase transition of Kosterlitz-Thouless type to a non-Fermi-liquid "charge-ordered" phase with finite residual entropy and anomalous transport properties. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization group methods are employed to obtain a detailed understanding of the problem.

The C→A transformation of Pr2O3 has been examined. The transformation is sluggish and takes place at and above 750°C. C-Pr2O3 is oxidized at a lower temperature than the A-form and oxidation proceeds in two stages in both cases. A hydrate Pr 2O3 . H2O, formed by the interaction of C-Pr2O3 and water at relatively high temperature, is described and its behaviour compared with that of Pr(OH)3. The C-form undergoes hydration at 40°C while the A-form does not. All the observations have been explained in terms of the defect structure of C-Pr2O 3.

The out-diffusion of germanium from the core of a photosensitive fiber under elevated temperature is exploited to form a Fabry-Perot filter within a single fiber Bragg grating, by subjecting the diffused region to a single exposure using the standard phase-mask technique. A key aspect of our work is the measurement of the out-diffusion through energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of the above single-grating filter for discrimination and simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. The proposed technique provides a significant advantage over other existing methods that require at least two gratings.

The extension of the superposition principle of the symmetries (P. Curie principle of symmetry) for the case of complete symmetry is given. The enumeration of all crystallographical groups of complete symmetry is presented, the number of elements having complete symmetry for each class of the crystals being indicated. The change of complete symmetry of the crystals under the phase transitions is obtained by superimposing the elements of complete symmetry of polar or axial vectors on the one hand, and the elements of complete symmetry of the crystals on the other. The tables of complete symmetry changes for the cubic, rhombic, monoclinic and triclinic crystals during the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phase transitions are given.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. A quantitative structural investigation was carried out on (1-y)PbZrxTi1-xO3-yPbZn(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3) where y=0.1 and 0.2 ((1-y)PZT-yPZN). High resolution XRD data have been used for quantitative phase analysis. The nominal compositions were prepared by a two-step low temperature calcining solid-state method. The sintered samples show an average grain size of 1-2 mu m. It is demonstrated that the increase in the concentration of PZN leads to the shift of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT towards the PbZrO3 end member. In the present work, an effort has been made to quantitatively determine the MPB phase contents and to regain the coexistence of tetragonal and monoclinic phases by varying the value of x(i.e. Zr/Ti ratio). The width of the MPB becomes considerably larger for y=0.10 and 0.20 as compared to pure PZT. This is attributed to the considerably lower grain size of our samples resulting from the adopted preparation method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed study of various reversed phase systems for the qualitative analysis of fatty acids has been made and it has been shown, among other things, that the liquid paraffin-aqueous methanol system is a most convenient one. The details of a fairly simple and rapid method for the quantitative estimation of higher fatty acids have also been discussed.

Expressions for the phase change Φ suffered by microwaves when transmitted through an artificial dielectric composed of metallic discs arranged in a three-dimensional array have been derived with different approaches as follows (i) molecular theory, (ii) electromagnetic theory and (iii) transmission line theory. The phase change depends on the distance t that the wave traverses inside the dielectric and also the spacing d between centre to centre of any two adjacent discs in the three principal directions. Molecular theory indicates Φ as an increasing function of t, whereas, the other two theories indicate Φ as an oscillatory function of t. The transmission line theory also exhibits Φ to be real or imaginary depending on t. Experimental values of Φ as a function of t have been obtained with the help of a microwave (3·2 cms wavelength) interferometer for two dielectrics having d as 1·91 cms and 2·22 cms respectively.
