A diaphragm-type pressure transducer with a sputtered platinum film strain gauge (sensing film) has been designed and fabricated. The various steps followed to prepare thin film strain gauges on the diaphragm are described. M-bond 450 adhesive (Measurements Group, USA) has been employed as the insulating layer. A detailed procedure to cure this layer is given. A d.c. sputtering method is employed to prepare the platinum films. This paper also includes details of the strain gauge pattern and its location on the diaphragm. A description of the output characteristics and overall behaviour of the platinum thin film pressure transducer is reported.
Effect of High Pressure on the Electrical Conductivity of TlInX2 (X = Se, Te) Layered Semiconductors
Resumo:
The dc electrical conductivity of TlInX2 (X = Se, Te) single crystals, parallel and perpendicular to the (001) c-axis is studied under high quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 7.0 GPa, at room temperature. Conductivity measurements parallel to the c-axis are carried out at high pressures and down to liquid nitrogen temperatures. These materials show continuous metallization under pressure. Both compounds have almost the same pressure coefficient of the electrical activation energy parallel to the c-axis, d(ΔE∥)/dP = −2.9 × 10−10 eV/Pa, which results from the narrowing of the band gap under pressure. The results are discussed in the light of the band structure of these compounds.

A fairly comprehensive computer program incorporating explicit expressions for the four-pole parameters of concentric-tube resonators, plug mufflers, and three-duct cross-flow perforated elements has been used for parametric studies. The parameters considered are hole diameter, the center-to-center distance between consecutive holes (which decides porosity), the incoming mean flow Mach number, the area expansion ratio, the number of partitions of chambers within a given overall shell length, and the relative lengths of these partitions or chambers, all normalized with respect to the exhaust pipe diameter. Transmission loss has been plotted as a function of a normalized frequency parameter. Additionally, the effect of the tail pipe length on insertion loss for an anechoic source has also been studied. These studies have been supplemented by empirical expressions for the normalized static pressure drop for different types of perforated-element mufflers developed from experimental observations.

Wide-line proton NMR spectra of ammonium thiocyanate have been recorded at 77 K as a function of external hydrostatic pressure. Contrary to expectations the line-width and the second moment decrease with the increase of pressure. This, however, is in accordance with the anomalous behaviour observed in other magnetic resonance studies of this compound and can be understood in terms of the change of electron density around the nitrogen atom of the SCN- group.

The characteristics of the high pressure oxygen-sputtering plasma in the pressure range 0.8–2.4 mbar have been studied using the Langmuir probe technique. The variation in plasma parameters such as positive ion density, electron density, mean electron energy and floating potential with pressure and temperature has been investigated. It has been observed that the positive ion density increases at high substrate temperatures whereas the negative ion density decreases. The study of the variation in mean electron energy and floating potential also indicated the possibility that the number of negative ions is less when the substrates are at elevated temperatures. Since the negative ions are supposed to cause re-sputtering and make the films off-stoichiometric, the reduction in the negative ion density as observed at elevated substrate temperatures is better suited for depositing stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconducting thin films.

Room-temperature Raman spectra of LiRbSO4 were studied as a function of pressure up to 170 kbar for two different orientations of the crystal. Four pressure-induced phase transitions at about 2, 17, 32 and 57 kbar were observed. The transitions at 17 and 57 kbar have slow kinetics, taking about 4 h for their completion. These phase transitions are associated with the orientations of the SO4 ions in the unit cell.

larity solution is obtained for laminar 3D constant pressure flow with lateral streamline divergence. The similarity solution is shown to reduce to a Blasius solution for 2D flow over a flat plate. Measurements of velocity profiles are made to compare the similarity solution and are found to be in excellent agreement with the prediction

Design, fabrication and preliminary testing of a flat pump with millimetre thickness are described in this paper. The pump is entirely made of polymer materials barring the magnet and copper coils used for electromagnetic actuation. The fabrication is carried out using widely available microelectronic packaging machinery and techniques. Therefore, the fabrication of the pump is straightforward and inexpensive. Two types of prototypes are designed and built. One consists of copper coils that are etched on an epoxy plate and the other has wound insulated wire of 90 mu m diameter to serve as a coil. The overall size of the first pump is 25 mm x 25 mm x 3.6 mm including the 3.1 mm-thick NdFeB magnet of diameter 12 mm. It consists of a pump chamber of 20 mm x 20 mm x 0.8 mm with copper coils etched from a copper-clad epoxy plate using dry-film lithography and milled using a CNC milling machine, two passive valves and the pump-diaphragm made of Kapton film of 0.089 mm thickness. The second pump has an overall size of 35 mm x 35 mm x 4.4 mm including the magnet and the windings. A breadboard circuit and DC power supply are used to test the pump by applying an alternating square-wave voltage pulse. A water slug in a tube attached to the inlet is used to observe and measure the air-flow induced by the pump against atmospheric pressure. The maximum flow rate was found to be 15 ml/min for a voltage of 2.5 V and a current of 19 mA at 68 Hz.

High-pressure resistivity measurements have been performed on G37.5AsxTe92.5-x (x = 20, 40, 45, 50 and 55) and Ge10AsxTe90-x (x = 15, 20, 35, 40, 45 and 50) glasses. The glasses show reversible metallization behaviour under pressure. The pressure derivative of the logarithm of the resistivity of the glasses is a minimum at glass compositions corresponding to the average coordination number [r] = 2.60. This behaviour is interpreted on the basis of the existence of a critical composition in glasses with a layered structure.

he effect of pressure on the conductivity of AgI-Ag2 O-MoO3 glasses has been reexamined. A conductivity maximum is observed around 0.7 GPa. No variation of the sample temperature is noted under pressure. The results are found to agree well with the cluster-tissue model.

The thermopower (TEP) and electrical resistance of stoichiometric Fe3O4 crystals have been measured up to pressures of 6 GPa over the temperature range of 80-160 K. The resistance decreases markedly with increasing pressure below the Verwey transition temperature TV and TV decreases linearly with increasing pressure. The magnitude of the TEP as well as the discontinuity at TV decrease with increasing pressure. The thermopower of Fe3O4 shows an interesting upswing at low temperatures (lt;100 K) which is affected significantly by pressure.

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of conductivity has been used to probe the inter-tube transport in multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The scanning electron microscopy images show highly aligned and random distribution of MWNTs. The conductivity in aligned carbon nanotube (ACNT) and random carbon nanotube (RCNT) samples at low temperature follows T-1/2 (at T < 8 K) and T-3/4 (at T > 8 K) dependence in accordance with the weak localization and electron-electron (e-e) interaction model. The values of diffusion coefficient in ACNT and RCNT are 0.25 x 10(-2) and 0.71 x 10(-2) cm(2) s(-1), respectively, indicating that larger number of inter-tube junctions in later enhances the bulk transport. The positive magnetoconductance (MC) data in both samples show that the weak localization contribution is dominant. However, the saturation of MC at higher fields and lower temperatures indicate that e-e interaction is quite significant in RCNT. The T-3/4 and T-1/2 dependence of inelastic scattering length (l(in)) in ACNT and RCNT samples show that the inelastic e-e scattering is more important in aligned tubes. Photoluminescence and Raman scattering experiments have been carried out on single crystals of C70 up to 31 GPa to investigate the effect of pressure on the optical band gap, vibrational modes and stability of the molecule. The photoluminescence band shifts to lower energies and the pressure dependence of the band maxima yields the hydrostatic deformation potential to be 2.15 eV. The slope changes in the pressure dependence of peak positions and linewidths of the Raman modes associated with the intramolecular vibrations at 1 GPa mark the known face-centred cubic-->rhombohedral orientational ordering transition. The reversible amorphization in C70 at P > 20 GPa has been compared with the irreversible amorphization in C60 at P > 22 GPa in terms of carbon-carbon distance between the neighbouring molecules at the threshold transition pressures, in conjunction with the interplay between the intermolecular and intramolecular interactions.
