Two new vanadium-tungsten oxide hydrates of the formulas, H0.125V0.125W0.875O3.1.5H2O (I) and Ho.33V0.33W0.67O3.1/3H2O (II), have been synthesized by acid-leaching of LiVWO6 with aqueous HNO3/HCl. While phase I obtained by treatment of LiVWO6 with dilute HNO3/HCl possesses an orthorhombic structure (a = 7.77(3), b = 13.87(6), c = 7.44(3) angstrom) related to WO3.2H2O, phase II, prepared by refluxing LiVWO6 with concentrated HNO3, is isostructural with WO3.1/3H2O. Dehydration of II around 330-degrees-C yields a hexagonal phase (III, a = 7.25(4), c = 7.74(3) angstrom) isotypic with hexagonal WO3. Both land III exhibit redox and acid-base intercalation reactivity characteristic of layered and tunnel structures.

Soft-chemical oxidation of KTiOPO4-like KM(0.5)(V)Ti(0.5)(III)OPO(4) (M = Nb, Ta) using chlorine in CHCl3 is accompanied by partial deintercalation of potassium, yielding K(0.5)MV(0.5)Ti(0.5)(IV)OPO(4) compounds which are new non-linear optical materials that exhibit efficient second-harmonic generation of 1064 nm radiation, as does KTiOPO4.

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON), the widely used solid electrolyte for thin film microbatteries, is not compatible with the ambient humid temperatures. The reasons for reduction in ionic conductivity of LiPON thin films from 2.8 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) to 9.9 x 10(-10) Scm(-1) when exposed to air are analyzed with the aid of AC impedance measurements, SEM, XPS and stylus profilometry. Initially, particulate-free film surfaces obtained soon after rf sputter deposition in N-2 ambient conditions becomes covered with microstructures, forming pores in the film when exposed to air. LiPON films are deposited on Ti coated silicon in addition to bare silicon, ruling out the possibility of stress-related rupturing from the LiPON/Si interface. The reduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and increased presence of lithium, oxygen and carbon over the film surface lowers the ionic conductivity of LiPON films when exposed to air. The spinning sidebands observed in the C-13 MAS NMR spectra of cis,cis-mucononitrile oriented in liquid-crystalline media and of the neat sample in the solid state are studied. There are differences in the sideband intensity patterns in the two cases. These differences arise because the order parameters which characterize the orientation of the solute in the liquid-crystalline media differ for different axes. It is shown that, in general, the relative intensities of the sidebands contain information on the sign and magnitude of an effective chemical-shift parameter which is a function of the sum of the products of the principal components of the chemical-shift tensor and the corresponding order parameters with respect to the director. A method for obtaining the orientation of the carbon chemical-shift tensor is proposed. The carbon chemical-shift tensors obtained from gauge-including atomic orbital calculations are also presented for comparison. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Chemical Degradation of Poly(styrene disulfide) and Poly(styrene tetrasulfide) by Triphenylphosphine
Resumo:
The chemical degradation of polysulfide polymers, viz., poly(styrene disulfide), PSD, and poly(styrene tetrasulfide), PST, has been achieved using triphenylphosphine, TPP. The reaction was monitored using P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The solubility analysis of the reaction residues reveals that while PSD degrades completely, PST on the other hand, undergoes complete degradation only when the concentration of TPP is increased. Moreover, the reaction of PST with TPP occurs at room temperature whereas PSD requires a higher temperature. The reaction products were analyzed using the direct pyrolysis mass spectrometric (DP-MS) technique, and their formation has been explained through an ionic mechanism.

At the heart of understanding cellular processes lies our ability to explore the specific nature of communication between sequential information carrying biopolymers. However, the data extracted from conventional solution phase studies may not reflect the dynamics of communication between recognized partners as they occur in the crowded cellular milieu. We use the principle of immobilization of histidine-tagged biopolymers at a Ni(II)-encoded Langmuir monolayer to study sequence-specific protein-protein interactions in an artificially crowded environment The advantage of this technique lies in increasing the surface density of one of the interacting partners that allows us to study macromolecular interactions in a controlled crowded environment, but without compromising the speed of the reactions. We have taken advantage of this technique to follow the sequential assembly process of the multiprotein complex Escherichia coil RNA polymerase at the interface and also deciphered the role of one of the proteins, omega (omega), in the assembly pathway. Our reconstitution studies indicate that in the absence of molecular chaperones or other cofactors, omega (omega) plays a decisive role in refolding the largest protein beta prime (beta') and its recruitment into the multimeric assembly to reconstitute an active RNA polymerase. It was also observed that the monolayer had the ability to distinguish between sequence-specific and -nonspecific interactions despite the immobilization of one of the biomacromolecules. The technique provides a universal two-dimensional template for studying protein-ligand interactions while mimicking molecular crowding.

Separation of dissolved heavy metals such-as Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from electroplating effluents using a new technique of emulsion-free liquid membrane (EFLM) has been studied. Experimental results show that nearly 95% extraction is obtained resulting in stripping phase enrichment up to 50 times relative to feed. It is also found that emulsion-free liquid membranes are highly efficient and superior to other types of liquid membranes.

Coarse BO2·xH2O (2 < x < 80) gels, free of anion contaminants react with A(OH)2 under refluxing conditions at 70100°C giving rise to crystallites of single phased, nanometer size powders of ABO3 perovskites (A = Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, Pb; B = Zr, Ti, Sn). Solid solutions of perovskites could be prepared from compositionally modified gels or mixtures of A(OH)2. Donor doped perovskites could also be prepared from the same method so that the products after processing are often semiconducting. Faster interfacial diffusion of A2+ ions into the gel generates the crystalline regions whose composition is controllable by the A/B ratio as well as the A(OH)2 concentration.

The antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure for the 3.5 copy Oxytricha telomeric sequence d(G(4)T(4))(3)G4 has been established using a combination of spectroscopic and chemical probing methods. In the presence of Naf ions, this sequence exhibits a circular dichroism spectrum with a positive band at 295 nm and a negative band around 265 nm, characteristic of an antiparallel G quartet structure. Further, we show that d(G(4)T(4))(3)G(4) adopts an antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure even in K+ unlike d(G(4)T(4)G(4)). KMnO4 probing experiments indicated the existence of intra and interloop interactions in the Na+ induced structure. We have found that K+ not only increases the thermal stability of,G quartet structure but also binds to the loop region and disrupts stacking and interloop interactions. Biological consequences of such cation-dependent conformational micro-heterogeneity in the loop region of G quartet structures is also discussed.

The H-1 NMR spectra of N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-pyridinecarboxamide and N-(4-methyl-phenyl)-3-pyridine carboxamide in CDCl3 and (CD3)(2)CO have been analysed with the help of the COSY spectra. Accurate H-1 chemical shifts and coupling constants have been obtained from the simulated spectra. From H-1 NMR and Nuclear Overhauser Enhancement (NOE) measurements the molecular conformations are inferred. The pyridyl ring is apparently coplanar with the amide group while the 3-pyridyl ring is nearly perpendicular to the amide plane so that the amide proton is nearer to the 2-pyridyl proton H2 than to H4. The orientation of the 4-methylphenyl group could not be determined.

The results of the structural and conformational studies carried out using C-13 CPMAS NMR technique on several glycine and alanine containing peptides in the solid state are reported. The study demonstrates the effects of variations in C-13 chemical shifts due to conformation and hydrogen bonding. The possibility of applying this technique to obtain insight into the conformational characteristics of peptides of unknown structures is discussed.
