Poly(methacrylonitrile peroxide) (PMNP) has been synthesized from methacrylonitrile by free radical initiated oxidative polymerization and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the alternating copolymer structure with labile peroxy bonds in the main chain. The extreme instability of PMNP was noted from FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal degradation studies by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry have revealed that PMNP degrades highly exothermically and the heat of degradation, 42.5 kcal mol−1, is of the same order as that reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. Mass spectral fragmentation pattern under electron impact (EI) condition has also been investigated. The mechanism of the primary exothermic degradation has been substantiated by thermochemical calculations. The chain dynamics of the polyperoxide chain has been studied by means of 13C spin–lattice relaxation times (T1) of the main chain as well as the side chain carbons. The temperature dependence of the spin–lattice relaxation times shows that the PMNP is more flexible compared to the analogous poly(styrene peroxide).

The present study investigates the structural and pharmaceutical properties of different multicomponent crystalline forms of lamotrigine (LTG) with some pharmaceutically acceptable coformers viz. nicotinamide (1), acetamide (2), acetic acid (3), 4-hydroxy-benzoic acid (4) and saccharin (5). The structurally homogeneous phases were characterized in the solid state by DSC/TGA, FT-IR and XRD (powder and single crystal structure analysis) as well as in the solution phase. Forms 1 and 2 were found to be cocrystal hydrate and cocrystal, respectively, while in forms 3, 4 and 5, proton transfer was observed from coformer to drug. The enthalpy of formation of multicomponent crystals from their components was determined from the enthalpy of solution of the cocrystals and the components separately. Higher exothermic values of the enthalpy of formation for molecular complexes 3, 4 and 5 suggest these to be more stable than 1 and 2. The solubility was measured in water as well as in phosphate buffers of varying pH. The salt solvate 3 exhibited the highest solubility of the drug in water as well as in buffers over the pH range 7-3 while the cocrystal hydrate 1 showed the maximum solubility in a buffer of pH 2. A significant lowering of the dosage profile of LTG was observed for 1, 3 and 5 in the animal activity studies on mice.

Polyaniline functionalized with imidazole as strategically designed receptor group in its backbone was synthesized for copper binding. The synthesized polymer has been characterized using FTIR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The addition of copper (II) to the polymer distinctly changes the properties such as crystallinity, molecular weight, aggregation, and electronic properties. XRD, DLS, SEM, and four-point probe techniques have been used for study of these changes. It is observed that the secondary ion generated as a result of copper coordination results in the doping of the polyaniline backbone, which enhances the conductivity by one order of magnitude. This paper reports investigation of Na2O and ZnO modified borovanadate glasses in the highly modified regime of compositions. These glasses have been prepared by microwave route. Ultraviolet (UV) and visible, infrared (IR), Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopies have been used to characterize the speciation in the glasses. Together with the variation of properties such as molar volume and glass transition temperatures, spectroscopic data indicate that at high levels of modification, ZnO tends to behave like network former. It is proposed that the observed variation of all the properties can be reasonably well understood with a structural model. The model considers that the modification and speciation in glasses are strongly determined by the hierarchy of group electronegativities. Further, it is proposed that the width of the transitions of glasses obtained under same condition reflects the fragility of the glasses. An empirical expression has been suggested to quantify fragility on the basis of width of the transition regions. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Salmonella typhimurium DCyD (StDCyD) is a fold type II pyridoxal 5' phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of D-Cys to H2S and pyruvate. It also efficiently degrades beta-chloro-D-alanine (beta CDA). D-Ser is a poor substrate while the enzyme is inactive with respect to L-Ser and 1-amino-1-carboxy cyclopropane (ACC). Here, we report the X-ray crystal structures of StDCyD and of crystals obtained in the presence of D-Cys, beta CDA, ACC, D-Ser, L-Ser, D-cycloserine (DCS) and L-cycloserine (LCS) at resolutions ranging from 1.7 to 2.6 angstrom. The polypeptide fold of StDCyD consisting of a small domain (residues 48-161) and a large domain (residues 1-47 and 162-328) resembles other fold type II PLP dependent enzymes. The structures obtained in the presence of D-Cys and beta CDA show the product, pyruvate, bound at a site 4.0-6.0 angstrom away from the active site. ACC forms an external aldimine complex while D- and L-Ser bind non-covalently suggesting that the reaction with these ligands is arrested at C alpha proton abstraction and transimination steps, respectively. In the active site of StDCyD cocrystallized with DCS or LCS, electron density for a pyridoxamine phosphate (PMP) was observed. Crystals soaked in cocktail containing these ligands show density for PLP-cycloserine. Spectroscopic observations also suggest formation of PMP by the hydrolysis of cycloserines. Mutational studies suggest that Ser78 and Gln77 are key determinants of enzyme specificity and the phenolate of Tyr287 is responsible for C alpha proton abstraction from D-Cys. Based on these studies, a probable mechanism for the degradation of D-Cys by StDCyD is proposed.

The Zn-CeO 2 composite coatings through electrodeposition technique were successfully fabricated on mild steel substrate. As a comparison pure zinc coating was also prepared. The concentration of CeO 2 nanoparticles was varied in the electrolytic bath and the composites were electrodeposited both in the presence and absence of cetyltriammonium bromide (CTAB). The performance of the CeO 2 nanoparticles towards the deposition, crystal structure, texture, surface morphology and electrochemical corrosion behavior was studied. For characterizations of the electrodeposits, the techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Both the additives ceria and surfactant polarize the reduction processes and thus influence the deposition process, surface nature and the electrochemical properties. The electrochemical experiments like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies carried out in 3.5 wt. New ternary copper (II) complexes, Cu(L-orn)(B)(Cl)](Cl center dot 2H(2)O) (1-2) where L-orn is L-ornithine, B is an N,N-donor heterocyclic base, viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 1) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 2), were synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Complex 2 is characterized by the X-ray single crystallographic method. The complex shows a distorted square-pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3OCl coordination sphere. Binding interactions of the complexes with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were investigated by UV-Vis absorption titration, ethidium bromide displacement assay, viscometric titration experiment and DNA melting studies. Complex 2 shows appreciable chemical nuclease activity in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). The complexes were subjected to in vitro cytotoxicity studies against carcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A-549) and human epithelial (HEp-2) cells. The IC50 values of 1 and 2 are less than that of cisplatin against HEp-2 cell lines. MIC values for 1 against the bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are 0.5 mM. Lithium L-Ascorbate dihydrate (LLA) is a new metal organic nonlinear optical crystal belonging to the saccharide family. Single crystals of LLA were grown from aqueous solution. Solubility of the crystal has a positive temperature coefficient facilitating growth by slow cooling. Rietveld refinement was used to confirm the phase formation. The crystal has prismatic habit with (010), (001) and (10-1) prominent faces. Thermal analysis shows that the crystal is stable up to 102 degrees C. Transmission spectrum of the crystal extends from 302 nm to 1600 nm. Dielectric spectroscopic analysis revealed Cole Cole behaviour and prominent piezoelectric resonance peaks were observed in the range of 100-200 kHz. Second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of up to 2.56 times that of a phase matched KDP crystal was achieved when the (010) plate of LLA single crystal was rotated about the +ve c axis, by 9.4 degrees in the clockwise direction. We also observed SHG conical sections which were attributed to noncollinear phase matching. The observation of the third conical section suggests very high birefringence and large nonlinear coefficients. A detailed study of surface laser damage showed that the crystal has high multiple damage thresholds of 9.7 GW cm(-2) and 42 GW cm(-2) at 1064 nm and 532 nm radiation respectively. The solution conformations of the -hybrid oligopeptides Boc-Aib-4(R)Val]n-OMe (n = 1-8) in organic solvents have been probed by NMR, IR, and CD spectroscopic methods. In the solid state, this peptide series favors C12-helical conformations, which are backbone-expanded analogues of 310 helices in -peptide sequences. NMR studies of the six- (n = 3) and 16-residue (n = 8) peptides reveal that only two NH protons attached the N-terminus residues Aib(1) and 4(R)Val(2) are solvent-exposed. Sequential NiH-Ni+1H NOEs characteristic of local helical conformations are also observed at the residues. IR studies establish that chain extension leads to a large enhancement in the intensities of the hydrogen-bonded NH stretching bands (3343-3280 cm-1), which suggest elongation of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded structures. The development of C12-helical structures upon lengthening of the sequence is supported by the NMR and IR observations. The CD spectra of the ()n peptides reveal a negative maximum at ca. 206 nm and a positive maximum at ca. 192 nm, spectral feature that are distinct from those of 310 helices in -peptides.

We here report what we believe to be an important method for studying hydrogen bonding in systems containing a paramagnetic centre. The technique of electron-nuclear double resonance ( ENDOR) has been applied to study the hydrogen-bond network around the AsO44-. centre in X-ray irradiated KH2AsO4. ENDOR transitions from several sets of hydrogen nuclei surrounding the centre were observed at 4.2 degrees K and the spectra for two sets of neighbouring nuclei are identified. The angular dependences for these spectra are fitted with a spin-Hamiltonian to obtain the isotropic and anisotropic magnetic hyperfine constants. The results are discussed in terms of the available spectroscopic and crystallographic data on KH2AsO4 and the order-disorder model of ferroelectrictricity in this class of crystals.

In the current communication, we report the synthesis, spectroscopic, crystal structure, DFT and photophysical studies of a new nicotinonitrile derivative, viz. 2-methoxy-6-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-4-p-tolyl-nicotinonitrile (2) as a potential blue light emitting material. The compound 2 was synthesized in good yield via a simple route. The acquired spectral and elemental analysis data were in consistent with the chemical structure of 2. The single crystal study further confirms its three dimensional structure, molecular shape, and nature of short contacts. Its DFT calculations reveal that compound 2 possesses a non-planar structure and its theoretical IR spectral data are found to be in accordance with experimental values. In addition, its UV visible and fluorescence spectral measurements prove that the compound exhibits good absorption and fluorescence properties. Also, it shows positive solvatochromic effect when the solvent polarity was varied from non-polar to polar. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In composite solid propellants, the fuel and oxidizer are held together by a polymer binder. Among the different types of polymeric binders used in solid propellants, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is considered as the most versatile. HTPB is conventionally cured using isocyanates to form polyurethanes. However, the incompatibility of isocyanates with energetic oxidizers such as ammonium dinitramide and hydrazinium nitroformate, the short pot life of the propellant slurry, and undesirable side reactions with moisture are limiting factors which adversely affect the mechanical properties of HTPB based propellant. With an aim of resolving these problems, HTPB was chemically transformed to azidoethoxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene and propargyloxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene by adopting appropriate synthesis strategies and characterizing them by spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. This is the first report on 1,3-dipolar addition reaction involving azide and alkyne end groups for cross-linking HTPB. The blend of these two polymers underwent curing under mild temperature (60 degrees C) conditions through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction resulting in triazoletriazoline networks. The curing parameters were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameter, viz., activation energy, was computed to be 107.6 kJ/mol, the preexponential factor was 2.79 x 10(12) s-(1), and the rate constant at 60 degrees C was computed to be 3.64 x 10-(5) s-(1). The cure profile at a given temperature was predicted using the kinetic parameters. Rheological studies revealed that the gel time for curing through the 1,3-dipolar addition is 280 min compared to 120 min for curing through the urethane route. The mechanical properties of the resultant cured polybutadiene network were superior to those of polyurethanes. The cured triazolinetriazole polymer network exhibited biphasic morphology with two glass transitions (T-g) at -56 and 42 degrees C in contrast to the polyurethane which exhibited a single transition at -60 degrees C. This was corroborated by associated morphological changes observed by scanning probe microscopy. The propellant processed using this binder has the advantages of improved pot life as indicated by the end of the mix viscosity which is 165 Pas as compared with 352 Pas for the polyurethane system along with a slow build- up rate. The mechanical properties of the propellant are superior to polyurethane with an improvement of 14% in tensile strength, 22% enhancement in elongation at break, and 12% in modulus.

Solvent effects play a vital role in various chemical, physical, and biological processes. To gain a fundamental understanding of the solute-solvent interactions and their implications on the energy level re-ordering and structure, UV-VIS absorption, resonance Raman spectroscopic, and density functional theory calculation studies on 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) in different solvents of diverse solvent polarity has been carried out. The solvatochromic analysis of the absorption spectra of PQ in protic dipolar solvents suggests that the longest (1n-pi(1)*; S-1 state) and the shorter (1 pi-pi(1)*; S-2 state) wavelength band undergoes a hypsochromic and bathochromic shift due to intermolecular hydrogen bond weakening and strengthening, respectively. It also indicates that hydrogen bonding plays a major role in the differential solvation of the S-2 state relative to the ground state. Raman excitation profiles of PQ (400-1800 cm(-1)) in various solvents followed their corresponding absorption spectra therefore the enhancements on resonant excitation are from single-state rather than mixed states. The hyperchromism of the longer wavelength band is attributed to intensity borrowing from the nearby allowed electronic transition through vibronic coupling. Computational calculation with C-2 nu symmetry constraint on the S-2 state resulted in an imaginary frequency along the low-frequency out-of-plane torsional modes involving the C=O site and therefore, we hypothesize that this mode could be involved in the vibronic coupling. The synthesis of the heterobinuclear copper-zinc complex CuZn(bz)(3)(bpy)(2)]ClO4 (bz = benzoate) from benzoic acid and bipyridine is described. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the heterobinuclear complex reveals the geometry of the benzoato bridged Cu(II)-Zn(II) centre. The copper or zinc atom is pentacoordinate, with two oxygen atoms from bridging benzoato groups and two nitrogen atoms from one bipyridine forming an approximate plane and a bridging oxygen atom from a monodentate benzoate group. The Cu-Zn distance is 3.345 angstrom. The complex is normal paramagnetic having mu(eff) value equal to 1.75 BM, ruling out the possibility of Cu-Cu interaction in the structural unit. The ESR spectrum of the complex in CH3CN at RT exhibit an isotropic four line spectrum centred at g = 2.142 and hyperfine coupling constants A(av) = 63 x 10(-4) cm(-1), characteristic of a mononuclear square-pyramidal copper(II) complexes. At LNT, the complex shows an isotropic spectrum with g(parallel to) = 2.254 and g(perpendicular to) =2.071 and A(parallel to) = 160 x 10(-4) cm(-1). The Hamiltonian parameters are characteristic of distorted square pyramidal geometry. Cyclic voltammetric studies of the complex have indicated quasi-reversible behaviour in acetonitrile solution.
