We report the formation omega phase in the remelted layers during laser cladding and remelting of quasicrystal forming Al65Cu23.3Fe11.7 alloy on pure aluminum. The omega phase is absent in the clad layers. In the remelted layer, the phase nucleates at the periphery of the primary icosahedral phase particles. A large number of omega phase particles forms enveloping the icosahedral phase growing into aluminum rich melt, which solidify as alpha-Al solid solution. On the other side it develops an interface with aluminum. A detailed transmission electron microscopic analysis shows that omega phase exhibits orientation relationship with icosahedral phase. The composition analysis performed using energy dispersive x-ray analyzer suggests that this phase has composition higher aluminum than the icosahedral phase. The analysis of the available phase diagram information indicates that the present results represent large departure from equilibrium conditions. A possible scenario of the evolution of the omega phase has been suggested.

An efficient load flow solution technique is required as a part of the distribution automation (DA) system for taking various control and operations decisions. This paper presents an efficient and robust three phase power flow algorithm for application to radial distribution networks. This method exploits the radial nature of the network and uses forward and backward propagation to calculate branch currents and node voltages. The proposed method has been tested to analyse several practical distribution networks of various voltage levels and also having high R/X ratio. The results for a practical distribution feeder are presented for illustration purposes. The application of the proposed method is also extended to find optimum location for reactive power compensation and network reconfiguration for planning and day-to-day operation of distribution networks.

Electric power utilities are installing distribution automation systems (DAS) for better management and control of the distribution networks during the recent past. The success of DAS, largely depends on the availability of reliable database of the control centre and thus requires an efficient state estimation (SE) solution technique. This paper presents an efficient and robust three-phase SE algorithm for application to radial distribution networks. This method exploits the radial nature of the network and uses forward and backward propagation scheme to estimate the line flows, node voltage and loads at each node, based on the measured quantities. The SE cannot be executed without adequate number of measurements. The extension of the method to the network observability analysis and bad data detection is also discussed. The proposed method has been tested to analyze several practical distribution networks of various voltage levels and also having high R:X ratio of lines. The results for a typical network are presented for illustration purposes. © 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The present report illustrates the phenomenon of phase separation leading to the splitting of solid solution structured Ag-Co nanoparticles into pure Ag and pure Co nanoparticles upon isothermal annealing inside a transmission electron microscope. In bulk, Ag-Co system shows negligible mutual solubility into a single phase solid solution structure upto a very high temperature. The Ag-Co nanoparticle splitting revealed that room temperature, solid solution atomic configuration, between bulk immiscible Ag and Co atoms coexisting in a nano-sized particle, is a kinetically frozen atomic arrangement and not a thermodynamically stable structure. The observed phase separation behavior resulting in particle splitting at high temperatures can be used to produce devices for sensor applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study provides an electrodeposition based synthesis method for producing solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles. It was also observed that the room temperature stable solid solution configuration for the electrodeposited Ag-Ni nanoparticle was a kinetically frozen atomic arrangement and not a thermodynamically stable structure as upon annealing of the Ag-Ni nanoparticles in the ambient atmosphere the solid solution structure decomposed producing phases that were oxides of Ag and Ni. Three new solution processable quinoxaline based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type molecules have been synthesized for application in field effect transistors. These molecules were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculation gives deeper insight into the electronic structure of these molecules. The crystallinity and morphology features of thin film were investigated using X-ray diffraction. These molecules show liquid crystalline phase confirmed by DSC and optical polarizing microscopy. Investigation of their field effect transistor performance indicated that these molecules exhibited p-type mobility up to 9.7 x 10 (4) cm(2) V (1) s (1) and on/off ratio of 10(4). Nano sized copper chromite, which is used as a burn rate accelerator for solid propellants, was synthesized by the solution combustion process using citric acid and glycine as fuel. Pure spinel phase copper chromite (CuCr2O4) was synthesized, and the effect of different ratios of Cu-Cr ions in the initial reactant and various calcination temperatures on the final properties of the material were examined. The reaction time for the synthesis with glycine was lower compared to that with citric acid. The synthesized samples from both fuel cycles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), BET surface area analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Commercial copper chromite that is currently used in solid propellant formulation was also characterized by the same techniques. XRD analysis shows that the pure spinel phase compound is formed by calcination at 700 degrees C for glycine fuel cycle and between 750 and 800 degrees C for citric acid cycle. XPS results indicate the variation of the oxidation state of copper in the final compound with a change in the Cu-Cr mole ratio. SEM images confirm the formation of nano size spherical shape particles. The variation of BET surface area with calcination temperature was studied for the solution combusted catalyst. Burn rate evaluation of synthesized catalyst was carried out and compared with the commercial catalyst. The comparison between BET surface area and the burn rate depicts that surface area difference caused the variation in burn rate between samples. The reason behind the reduction in surface area and the required modifications in the process are also described.

In the present study, electrodeposition technique was used to produce Ag-Ni nanowires. Ag-Ni system shows extremely high bulk immiscibility. Nanowire morphology was achieved by employing an anodic alumina membrane having pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Microstructure of as-deposited wire was composed of nano-sized solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of pure Ag phase. It is proposed that the two phase microstructure resulted from an initial formation of solid solution structured nanoparticles in the alumina template pore followed by nucleation of pure Ag phase over the particles which eventually grew to form the matrix phase. In this article, we have reported the controlled synthesis of uniformly grown zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) films by a simple, low-cost, and scalable pulsed spray pyrolysis technique. From the surface analysis it is noticed that the as-deposited films have uniformly dispersed NPs-like morphology. The structural studies reveal that these NPs films have highly crystalline hexagonal crystal structure, which are preferentially orientated along the (001) planes. The size of the NPs varied between 5 and 100 nm, and exhibited good stoichiometric chemical composition. Raman spectroscopic analysis reveals that these ZnO NPs films have pure single phase and hexagonal crystal structure. These unique nanostructured films exhibited a low electrical resistivity (5 Omega cm) and high light transmittance (90 %) in visible region.

The amplitude-modulation (AM) and phase-modulation (PM) of an amplitude-modulated frequency-modulated (AM-FM) signal are defined as the modulus and phase angle, respectively, of the analytic signal (AS). The FM is defined as the derivative of the PM. However, this standard definition results in a PM with jump discontinuities in cases when the AM index exceeds unity, resulting in an FM that contains impulses. We propose a new approach to define smooth AM, PM, and FM for the AS, where the PM is computed as the solution to an optimization problem based on a vector interpretation of the AS. Our approach is directly linked to the fractional Hilbert transform (FrHT) and leads to an eigenvalue problem. The resulting PM and AM are shown to be smooth, and in particular, the AM turns out to be bipolar. We show an equivalence of the eigenvalue formulation to the square of the AS, and arrive at a simple method to compute the smooth PM. Some examples on synthesized and real signals are provided to validate the theoretical calculations.

This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and kinetics of steam reforming of methane and water gas shift (WGS) reactions over highly active and coke resistant Zr0.93Ru0.05O2-delta. The catalyst showed high activity at low temperatures for both the reactions. For WGS reaction, 99% conversion of CO with 100% H-2 selectivity was observed below 290 degrees C. The detailed kinetic studies including influence of gas phase product species, effect of temperature and catalyst loading on the reaction rates have been investigated. For the reforming reaction, the rate of reaction is first order in CH4 concentration and independent of CO and H2O concentration. This indicates that the adsorptive dissociation of CH4 is the rate determining step. The catalyst also showed excellent coke resistance even under a stoichiometric steam/carbon ratio. A lack of CO methanation activity is an important finding of present study and this is attributed to the ionic nature of Ru species. The associative mechanism involving the surface formate as an intermediate was used to correlate experimental data. Copyright (C) 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The paper reports phase evolution in mechanically driven Ag-15 at. pct Sn alloy powder starting with elemental powders in order to establish the feasibility of designing nanocomposites of a Ag-Sn solid solution. This alloy lies in the phase field of the hexagonal zeta-phase which is a well-known Hume-Rothery electron compound with an electron-to-atom ratio of about 1.45 and hexagonal crystal structure (a = 0.2966 nm, c = 0.4782 nm). Through a systematic use of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, the results establish the formation of the zeta-phase which co-exists with the Ag solid solution during the initial phase of milling. Mechanical milling for long duration (55 hours) destabilizes the zeta-phase. A complete solid solution of Ag with a grain size of similar to 8 nm could be achieved after 60 hours of milling. Additional milling can induce decomposition of the solid solution that results in a reappearance of zeta-phase. We present a detailed thermodynamic calculation which indicates that complete Ag solid solution of the present alloy composition would be possible if the crystallites size can be reduced below a certain critical size. In particular, we show that both Ag and zeta-phase grain sizes need to be taken into account for determining the metastable equilibrium and the phase change that has been experimentally observed. Finally, we argue that recrystallization processes set a limit to the achievable size of the nanoparticles with metastable Ag solid solution.

Solution combustion synthesis technique was adopted to synthesize V2O5, and Mo doped phases, The as-synthesized V2O5, has been reduced by a novel reduction technique to form VO2 typephase. The monophasic nature of the samples as revealed by XRD data and systematic shift in peak position indicated solid solubility up to 2 at % of Mo in VO2 lattice. The crystallite size was found to similar to 40 nm. Particle size measurement carried out using Transmission electron microscope ( TEM) agreed with XRD experiments. Scanning electron microscope revealed the morphology of the particles to be plate like and bimodal. Variation in the metal- insulator transition temperature as a function of doping was investigated by 4-probe electrical resistivity measurement on sintered ceramics.

Here we present digestive ripening facilitated interatomic diffusion for the phase controlled synthesis of homogeneous intermetallic nanocrystals of Au-Sn system. Au and Sn metal nanoparticles synthesized by a solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method are employed as precursors for the fabrication of AuSn and Au5Sn which are Au-rich Au-Sn intermetallic nanocrystals. By optimizing the stoichiometry of Au and Sn in the reaction mixture, and by employing growth directing agents, the formation of phase pure intermetallic AuSn and Au5Sn nanocrystals could be realized. The as-prepared Au and Sn colloidal nanoparticles and the resulting intermetallic nanocrystals are thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM and STEM-EDS), and optical spectroscopy. The results obtained here demonstrate the potential of solution chemistry which allows synthesizing phase pure Au-Sn intermetallics with tailored morphology.
