The thermal degradation of a series of para-substituted poly(styrene peroxide)s with electron-donating [CH3, C(CH3)(3)] and electron-attracting (Br) substitutents are investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicate that the Hammett relationship can describe quantitatively the trends in maximum rate of polymer decomposition (T-max) observed in TGA and thus thermostability of substituted poly(styrene peroxide)s depends only on the electronic nature of substituents and their ability to stabilize macroradicals formed during chain scission. The experimental results are also substantiated by thermochemical calculations. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was carried out in several solvents and some mixtures of solvents. The time evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD), determined by gel permeation chromatography, is analysed by continuous distribution kinetics. The rate coefficients for polymer degradation are determined for each solvent. The variation of rate coefficients is correlated with the vapour pressure of the solvent, kinematic viscosity of the solution and solvent-polymer interaction parameters. The vapour pressure and the kinematic viscosity of the solution are found to be more critical than other parameters (such as the Huggins and Flory-Huggins constants) in determining the degradation rates. Absorption due to immersion in aqueous media consisting of either saline or seawater or due to exposure to water vapor conditions and the attendant effect on the compressive properties of syntactic foam reinforced with E-glass fibers in the form of chopped strands were studied. Whereas the compressive strength decreased in samples exposed to water vapor, the saline or seawater immersed samples showed increase when compared to the dry sample. The decrease in strength in the vapor-exposed case is ascribed to higher absorption of water and to debonding and damaged features for interfaces. The enhancement of strength values for the samples immersed in saltish media is traced to the larger size of the chloride ion and resultant changes in the stress state around the fiber-bearing regions. Recourse to an analysis of scanning electron microscopic pictures of the compression-failed samples is taken to explain the observed trends.

The ultrasonic degradation of poly(vinyl acetate) was carried out in six different solvents and two mixtures of solvents. The evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD) with time was determined with gel permeation chromatography. The observed MWDs were analyzed by continuous distribution kinetics. A stoichiometric kernel that accounts for preferential mid-point breakage of the polymer chains was used. The degradation rate coefficient of the polymer in each solvent was determined from the model. The variations of rate coefficients were correlated with vapor pressure of the solvent, the Flory–Huggins polymer–solvent interaction parameter and the kinematic viscosity of the solution. A lower saturation vapor pressure resulted in higher degradation rates of the polymer. The degradation rate increased with increasing kinematic viscosity.

Poly(methacrylonitrile peroxide) (PMNP) has been synthesized from methacrylonitrile by free radical initiated oxidative polymerization and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the alternating copolymer structure with labile peroxy bonds in the main chain. The extreme instability of PMNP was noted from FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal degradation studies by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry have revealed that PMNP degrades highly exothermically and the heat of degradation, 42.5 kcal mol−1, is of the same order as that reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. Mass spectral fragmentation pattern under electron impact (EI) condition has also been investigated. The mechanism of the primary exothermic degradation has been substantiated by thermochemical calculations. The chain dynamics of the polyperoxide chain has been studied by means of 13C spin–lattice relaxation times (T1) of the main chain as well as the side chain carbons. The temperature dependence of the spin–lattice relaxation times shows that the PMNP is more flexible compared to the analogous poly(styrene peroxide).

Seismic design of reinforced soil structures involves many uncertainties that arise from the backfill soil properties and tensile strength of the reinforcement which is not addressed in current design guidelines. This paper highlights the significance of variability in the internal stability assessment of reinforced soil structures. Reliability analysis is applied to estimate probability of failure and pseudo‐static approach has been used for the calculation of the tensile strength and length of the reinforcement needed to maintain the internal stability against tension and pullout failures. Logarithmic spiral failure surface has been considered in conjunction with the limit equilibrium method. Two modes of failure namely, tension failure and pullout failure have been considered. The influence of variations of the backfill soil friction angle, the tensile strength of reinforcement, horizontal seismic acceleration on the reliability index against tension failure and pullout failure of reinforced earth structure have been discussed.

Current-voltage (I-V) and impedance measurements were carried out in doped poly(3-methylthiophene) devices by varying the carrier density. As the carrier concentration reduces the I-V characteristics indicate that the conduction mechanism is limited by metal-polymer interface, as also observed in impedance data. The temperature dependence of I-V in moderately doped samples shows a trap-controlled space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC); whereas in lightly doped devices injection-limited conduction is observed at lower bias and SCLC at higher voltages. The carrier density-dependent quasi-Fermi level adjustment and trap-limited transport could explain this variation in conduction mechanism. Capacitance measurements at lower frequencies and higher bias voltages show a sign change in values due to the significant variations in the relaxation behaviour for lightly and moderately doped samples. The electrical hysteresis increases as carrier density is reduced due to the time scales involved in the de-trapping of carriers.

Biphasic calcium phosphates have received considerable attention due to their optimum dissolution rate in the human body after implantation. These materials are composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and resorbable tricalcium phosphate (TCP). In the present investigation, HA whiskers are reinforced into TCP to enhance the mechanical properties of this biphasic composite. Various amounts (30-50 wt%) HA whiskers are reinforced in TCP matrix. Microstructural characterization has been carried out using field-emission scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties have been investigated by microindentation in a universal testing machine (UTM). As TCP is resorbable, it will dissolve in body fluid and there is a strong possibility for the faceted HA whiskers to interact with functional groups present in the body fluid surroundings.

The objective of the present in vitro research was to investigate cardiac tissue cell functions (specifically cardiomyocytes and neurons) on poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) (50:50 wt.%)-carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites to ascertain their potential for myocardial tissue engineering applications. CNF were added to biodegradable PLGA to increase the conductivity and cytocompatibility of pure PLGA. For this reason, different PLGA:CNF ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50,25:75, and 0:100 wt.%) were used and the conductivity as well as cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neurons were assessed. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis characterized the microstructure, chemistry, and crystallinity of the materials of interest to this study. The results show that PLGA:CNF materials are conductive and that the conductivity increases as greater amounts of CNF are added to PLGA, from OS m(-1) for pure PLGA (100:0 wt.%) to 5.5 x 10(-3) S m(-1) for pure CNF (0:100 wt.%). The results also indicate that cardiomyocyte density increases with greater amounts of CNF in PLGA (up to 25:75 wt.% PLGA:CNF) for up to 5 days. For neurons a similar trend to cardiomyocytes was observed, indicating that these conductive materials promoted the adhesion and proliferation of two cell types important for myocardial tissue engineering applications. This study thus provides, for the first time, an alternative conductive scaffold using nanotechnology which should be further explored for cardiovascular applications. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. In literature we find broadly two types of shape memory alloy based motors namely limited rotation motor and unlimited rotation motor. The unlimited rotation type SMA based motor reported in literature uses SMA springs for actuation. An attempt has been made in this paper to develop an unlimited rotation type balanced poly phase motor based on SMA wire in series with a spring in each phase. By isolating SMA actuation and spring action we are able achieve a constant force by the SMA wire through out its range of operation. The Poly phase motor can be used in stepping mode for generating incremental motion and servo mode for generating continuous motion. A method of achieving servo motion by micro stepping is presented. Micro stepping consists of controlling single-phase temperature with a position feedback. The motor has been modeled with a new approach to the SMA wire Hysterysis model. Motor is simulated for different responses and the results are compared with the experimental data.
