Differently hydrated sodium p-nitrophenolate (NPNa) crystals were obtained while growing them from different solvents such as methanol and water. Thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction studies were carried out on these crystals. Kurtz powder SHG technique was used for qualitative assessment of their nonlinear optical (NLO) activity. From the detailed single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies it is established that NPNa has three different forms, of which only one is found to possess NLO activity. Additionally, a new NLO active crystal was also found to grow from aqueous solution. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new series of twin nonlinear optical (NLO) molecules, having two 4-nitrophenol chromophores that are linked via a flexible polymethylene spacer of varying length [(CH2)(n), n = 1-12], were synthesized. Powder second harmonic generation measurements of these twin samples indicated a pronounced odd-even oscillation, with the odd twins exhibiting a high SHG value while the even ones gave no measurable SH signal. This behavior reflects the crystal packing preferences in such twin NLO systems that have odd and even numbers of atoms linking them - the even ones appear to prefer a centrosymmetric packing arrangement. The orientational/disordering dynamics of these twin NLO molecules, doped in a polymer (poly(methyl methacrylate)) matrix, has also been studied using SHG in electric field poled samples. Interestingly, the maximum attainable SH signal, chi((2)), in, the poled samples also showed an odd-even oscillation; the odd ones again having a higher value of chi((2)) This unprecedented odd-even oscillation in such molecularly doped systems is rationalized as being due to the intrinsically greater ease of a parallel alignment of the two chromophores in the twins with an odd spacer than in those with an even one. Further, the temporal stability of the SHG intensity at 70 degrees C, after the removal of the applied corona, was also studied. The relaxation of all the twin chromophores followed a biexponential decay; the characteristic relaxation time (tau(2)) for the slow decay component suggests that while the twin with a single methylene unit relaxes relatively slowly, the relaxation is significantly faster in cases where n = 2 and 3. In the twins with even longer spacer segments, the relaxation again becomes slower and reaches a saturation value. The observed minimum appears to reflect the interplay of two competing factors that affect the chromophore alignment in such twin systems, namely, the electrostatic repulsion between neighboring oriented dipoles and the intrinsic flexibility of the spacer.

Glasses in the system (1 - x)Li2B4O7-xBi(2)WO(6) (0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35) were prepared by splat quenching technique. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were employed to characterize the as-quenched glasses. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR TEM) revealed the presence of fine, nearly spherical crystallites of Bi2WO6 varying from 1.5 to 20 nm in size, depending on x in the as-quenched glasses. The glasses (corresponding to x = 0.3) heat-treated at 723 K for 6 h gave rise to a clear crystalline phase of Bi2WO6 embedded in the Li2B4O7 glass matrix, as observed by X-ray studies. The dielectric constants of the as-quenched glasses as well as the glass-ceramics decreased with increase in frequency (40Hz-100 kHz) at 300 K, and the value obtained for the glass-ceramic (x = 0.2) is in agreement with the values predicted using Maxwell's model and the logarithmic mixture rule. The dielectric constants for both the as-quenched glass and the glass-ceramic increased with increase in temperature (300 - 873 K) and exhibited anomalies close to the onset of the crystallization temperature of the host glass matrix. The optical transmission properties:of these glass-ceramics were found to be compositional dependant. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Two methods based on wavelet/wavelet packet expansion to denoise and compress optical tomography data containing scattered noise are presented, In the first, the wavelet expansion coefficients of noisy data are shrunk using a soft threshold. In the second, the data are expanded into a wavelet packet tree upon which a best basis search is done. The resulting coefficients are truncated on the basis of energy content. It can be seen that the first method results in efficient denoising of experimental data when scattering particle density in the medium surrounding the object was up to 12.0 x 10(6) per cm(3). This method achieves a compression ratio of approximate to 8:1. The wavelet packet based method resulted in a compression of up to 11:1 and also exhibited reasonable noise reduction capability. Tomographic reconstructions obtained from denoised data are presented. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved,

A series of aryl monosulphides and disulphides have been synthesized and characterized. Their molecular hyperpolarizability (beta) has been measured in solution with the hyper-Rayleigh Scattering technique and also calculated by semiempirical AMI method. The trend in the observed and calculated values of first hyperpolarizability of these compounds has been found to be in good agreement. These compounds show moderate P values and excellent transparency in the visible region.

Crystallization behaviors of the glass with a composition of 25Li(2)O.25B(2)O(3).50GeO(2) corresponding to lithium borogermanate LiBGeO4 have been examined. It has been confirmed that the LiBGeO4 crystalline phase is formed at the surface of heat-treated glasses. The second harmonic (SH) generation is found from transparent surface crystallized glasses, demonstrating for the first time that the LiBGeO4 phase shows optical nonlinearity. The SH intensity of LiBGeO4 crystallites (powdered state) prepared through crystallization is about ten times as large as that of pulverized alpha-quartz. The SH intensity of transparent crystallized glasses (bulk state) with crystalline layers of 3-4.5 mum thickness increases with increasing heat treatment temperature (540-560degreesC) and time (1-6 h), and the maximum SH intensity among the samples studied is in the order of 1/10 in comparison with that of alpha-quartz single crystal. The transparent crystallized glass obtained by heat treatment at 550alphaC for 3 h exhibits a clear and fine Maker fringe pattern, indicating a highly orientation of LiBGeO4 crystals at the surface.

Glass nanocomposites in the system (1-x)Li2B4O7-xBi(2)WO(6) (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were X-ray amorphous. Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA) confirmed their glassy nature. The composites on heat-treatment at 720 K yielded monophasic crystalline bismuth tungstate in lithium borate glass matrix. The average size and the spherical nature of the dispersed crystallites were assessed via High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The dielectric constants (epsilon(r)) of both the as-quenched and post heat-treated composites were found to increase with increase in x (bismuth tungstate content) at all the frequencies (100 Hz-40 MHz) in the temperature range 300 K-870 K. While the dielectric loss (D) decreased with increasing x. The pyroelectric coefficients of the as-quenched (consisting 20 nm sized crystallites) and 720 K heat-treated sample (x = 0.3) were determined as a function of temperature (300 K-873 K) and the values obtained at room temperature were 20 and 60 muC/m(2) K respectively. The as-quenched and heat-treated (720 K) glass nanocomposites exhibited ferroelectric (P Vs E) hysteresis loops. The remnant polarization and coercive field of the heat-treated glass nanocomposite at 300 K were respectively 2.597 muC/cm(2) and 543 V/cm. These glass nanocomposites were birefringent in the 300-873 K temperature range.

Single crystal (100) wafers of n-InSb were implanted with 50 MeV Li3+ ions at various fluences ranging from 10(10) to 10(14) ions/cm(2) at room temperature. Investigations of the optical, electrical, and structural properties of the as-grown, irradiated, annealed wafers were carried out by infrared and Raman spectroscopies, Hall measurements, and high resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD). In the case of samples irradiated with an ion fluence of 1.6x10(14) ions/cm(2), electrical measurements at 80 K reveal that there is a decrease in carrier concentration from 8.5x10(15) (for unirradiated) to 1.1x10(15)/cm(3) and an increase in mobility from 5.4x10(4) to 1.67x10(5) cm(2)/V s. The change in carrier concentration is attributed to the creation of electron trap centers induced by ion beam irradiation and the increase in mobility to the formation of electrical inactive complexes. Nevertheless, even with the irradiation at 1.6x10(14) ions/cm(2) fluence the crystalline quality remains largely unaffected, as is seen from HRXRD and Raman studies. Single crystals of a-hopeite exhibiting high transparency were grown by single diffusion gel growth technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the crystal belongs to orthorhombic system. The values of several structural and physical parameters have been determined for the grown crystal. The optical absorption study reveals the transparency of the crystal and is noticed in the entire visible region and the cut-off wavelength was found to be 230 nm. The optical band gap found to be at 3.25 eV. The dependence of extinction co-efficient (k) and the refractive index (n) on the wavelength was also shown. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the crystal was studied as a function of frequency and temperature. Transport properties of the grown crystal have been studied from the Cole-Cole plot. Structural, optical and nanomechanical properties of nanocrystalline Zinc Telluride (ZnTe) films of thickness upto 10 microns deposited at room temperature on borosilicate glass substrates are reported. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that the films were preferentially oriented along the (1 1 1) direction. The maximum refractive index of the films was 2.74 at a wavelength of 2000 nm. The optical band gap showed strong thickness dependence. The average film hardness and Young's modulus obtained from load-displacement curves and analyzed by Oliver-Pharr method were 4 and 70 GPa respectively. Hardness of (1 1 1) oriented ZnTe thin films exhibited almost 5 times higher value than bulk. The studies show clearly that the hardness increases with decreasing indentation size, for indents between 30 and 300 nm in depth indicating the existence of indentation size effect. The coefficient of friction for these films as obtained from the nanoscratch test was ~0.4.

We explore a pseudodynamic form of the quadratic parameter update equation for diffuse optical tomographic reconstruction from noisy data. A few explicit and implicit strategies for obtaining the parameter updates via a semianalytical integration of the pseudodynamic equations are proposed. Despite the ill-posedness of the inverse problem associated with diffuse optical tomography, adoption of the quadratic update scheme combined with the pseudotime integration appears not only to yield higher convergence, but also a muted sensitivity to the regularization parameters, which include the pseudotime step size for integration. These observations are validated through reconstructions with both numerically generated and experimentally acquired data. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Conjugated polymers are intensively pursued as candidate materials for emission and detection devices with the optical range of interest determined by the chemical structure. On the other hand the optical range for emission and detection can also be tuned by size selection in semiconductor nanoclusters. The mechanisms for charge generation and separation upon optical excitation, and light emission are different for these systems. Hybrid systems based on these different class of materials reveal interesting electronic and optical properties and add further insight into the individual characteristics of the different components. Multilayer structures and blends of these materials on different substrates were prepared for absorption, photocurrent (Iph), photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminscence (EL) studies. Polymers chosen were derivatives of polythiophene (PT) and polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) along with nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide of average size 4.4 nm (CdS-44). The photocurrent spectral response in these systems followed the absorption response around the band edges for each of the components and revealed additional features, which depended on bias voltage, thickness of the layers and interfacial effects. The current-voltage curves showed multi-component features with emission varying for different regimes of voltage. The emission spectral response revealed additive features and is discussed in terms of excitonic mechanisms.
