The isoscalar axial-vector renormalization constant is reevaluated using the QCD sum-rule method. It is found to be substantially different from the anomaly-free octet axial-vector u¯γμγ5+d¯γμγ5-2s¯γμγ5 coupling. Combining this determination with the known values of the isovector coupling GA and the F/D ratio for the octet current, we find the integral of the polarized proton structure function to be Gp=Fgp1(x)dx=0.135, in agreement with recent measurement by the European Muon Collaboration.

Long-range transport of continental dust makes these particles a significant constituent even at locations far from their sources. It is important to study the temporal variations in dust loading over desert regions and the role of meteorology, in order to assess its radiative impact. In this paper, infrared radiance (10.5-12.5 mu m), acquired by the METEOSAT-5 satellite (similar to 5-km resolution) during 1999 and 2003 was used to quantify wind dependence of dust aerosols and to estimate the radiative forcing. Our analysis shows that the frequency of occurrence of dust events was higher during 2003 compared to 1999. Since the dust production function depends mainly on the surface wind speed over regions which are dry and without vegetation, the role of surface wind on IDDI was examined in detail. It was found that an increase of IDDI with wind speed was nearly linear and the rate of increase in IDDI with surface wind was higher during 2003 compared to 1999. It was also observed that over the Indian desert, when wind speed was the highest during monsoon months (June to August), the dust production rate was lower because of higher soil moisture (due to monsoon rainfall). Over the Arabian deserts, when the wind speed is the highest during June to August, the dust production rate is also highest, as soil moisture is lowest during this season. Even though nothing can be said precisely on the reason why 2003 had a greater number of dust events, examination of monthly mean soil moisture at source regions indicates that the occurrence of high winds simultaneous with high soil moisture could be the reason for the decreased dust production efficiency in 1999. It appears that the deserts of Northwest India are more efficient dust sources compared to the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Northeast Africa (excluding Sahara). The radiative impact of dust over various source regions is estimated, and the regionally and annually averaged top of the atmosphere dust radiative forcing (short wave, clear-sky and over land) over the entire study region (0-35 degrees N; 30 degrees-100 degrees E) was in the range of -0.9 to +4.5 W m(-2). The corresponding values at the surface were in the range of -10 to -25 W m(-2). Our studies demonstrate that neglecting the diurnal variation of dust can cause errors in the estimation of long wave dust forcing by as much as 50 to 100%, and nighttime retrieval of dust can significantly reduce the uncertainties. A method to retrieve dust aerosols during nighttime is proposed. The regionally and annually averaged long wave dust radiative forcing was +3.4 +/- 1.6 W m(-2).

Changes in MAPK activities were examined in the corpus luteum (CL) during luteolysis and pregnancy, employing GnRH antagonist (Cetrorelix)-induced luteolysis, stages of CL, and hCG treatment to mimic early pregnancy as model systems in the bonnet monkey. We hypothesized that MAPKs could serve to phosphorylate critical phosphoproteins to regulate luteal function. Analysis of several indices for structural (caspase-3 activity and DNA fragmentation) and functional (progesterone and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein expression) changes in the CL revealed that the decreased luteal function observed during Cetrorelix treatment and late luteal phase was associated with increased caspase-3 activity and DNA fragmentation. As expected, human chorionic gonadotropin treatment dramatically increased luteal function, but the indices for structural changes were only partially attenuated. All three MAPKs appeared to be constitutively active in the mid-luteal-phase CL, and activities of ERK-1/2 and p38-MAPK (p38), but not Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)-1/2, decreased significantly (P < 0.05) within 12 - 24 h after Cetrorelix treatment. During the late luteal phase, in contrast to decreased ERK-1/2 and p38 activities, JNK-1/2 activities increased significantly (P < 0.05). Although human chorionic gonadotropin treatment increased ERK-1/2 and p38 activities, it decreased JNK-1/2 activities. The activation status of p38 was correlated with the phosphorylation status of an upstream activator, MAPK kinase-3/6 and the expression of MAPK activated protein kinase-3, a downstream target. Intraluteal administration of p38 kinase inhibitor (SB203580), but not MAPK kinase-1/2 inhibitor (PD98059), decreased the luteal function. Together, these data suggest an important role for p38 in the regulation of CL function in primates.

The problem of denoising damage indicator signals for improved operational health monitoring of systems is addressed by applying soft computing methods to design filters. Since measured data in operational settings is contaminated with noise and outliers, pattern recognition algorithms for fault detection and isolation can give false alarms. A direct approach to improving the fault detection and isolation is to remove noise and outliers from time series of measured data or damage indicators before performing fault detection and isolation. Many popular signal-processing approaches do not work well with damage indicator signals, which can contain sudden changes due to abrupt faults and non-Gaussian outliers. Signal-processing algorithms based on radial basis function (RBF) neural network and weighted recursive median (WRM) filters are explored for denoising simulated time series. The RBF neural network filter is developed using a K-means clustering algorithm and is much less computationally expensive to develop than feedforward neural networks trained using backpropagation. The nonlinear multimodal integer-programming problem of selecting optimal integer weights of the WRM filter is solved using genetic algorithm. Numerical results are obtained for helicopter rotor structural damage indicators based on simulated frequencies. Test signals consider low order polynomial growth of damage indicators with time to simulate gradual or incipient faults and step changes in the signal to simulate abrupt faults. Noise and outliers are added to the test signals. The WRM and RBF filters result in a noise reduction of 54 - 71 and 59 - 73% for the test signals considered in this study, respectively. Their performance is much better than the moving average FIR filter, which causes significant feature distortion and has poor outlier removal capabilities and shows the potential of soft computing methods for specific signal-processing applications.

A novel method to account for the transmission line resistances in structure preserving energy functions (SPEF) is presented in this paper. The method exploits the equivalence of a lossy network having the same conductance to susceptance ratio for all its elements to a lossless network with a new set of power injections. The system equations and the energy function are developed using centre of inertia (COI) variables and the loads are modelled as arbitrary functions of respective bus voltages. The application of SPEF to direct transient stability evaluation is presented considering a realistic power system example.

The dependence of barrier height on the metal work function of metal-SiO2-p-Si Schottky barrier diodes was investigated and nonlinearity was found. This is explained by the theoretical model proposed recently by Chattopadhyay and Daw. The values of interface trap density and fixed charge density of the insulating layer of the diodes were calculated using this model and found to be appreciably different from those estimated by the usual method.

Abstract. In order to estimate the acoustic energy scattered when a unit volume of free turbulence, such as in free jets, interacts with a plane steady sound wave, theoretical expressions are derived for two simple models of turbulence: eddy model and isotropic model. The effect of convection by mean motion of the energy-bearing eddies on the incident sound wave and on the sound generated from wave-turbulence interaction is taken into account. Finally, by means of a representative calculation, the directionality pattern and Mach number dependence of the noise so generated is discussed.

A damage detection and imaging methodology based on symmetry of neighborhood sensor path and similarity of signal patterns with respect to radial paths in a circular array of sensors has been developed It uses information regarding Limb wave propagation along with a triangulation scheme to rapidly locate and quantify the severity of damage without using all of the sensor data. In a plate like structure, such a scheme can be effectively employed besides full field imaging of wave scattering pattern from the damage, if present in the plate. This new scheme is validated experimentally. Hole and corrosion type damages have been detected and quantified using the proposed scheme successfully. A wavelet based cumulative damage index has been studied which shows monotonic sensitivity against the severity of the damage. which is most desired in a Structural Health Monitoring system. Several investigators in the past have used the radiance depression (with respect to clear-sky infrared radiance), resulting from the presence of mineral dust aerosols in the atmosphere, as an index of dust aerosol load in the atmosphere during local noon. Here, we have used a modified approach to retrieve dust index during night since assessment of diurnal average infrared dust forcing essentially requires information on dust aerosols during night. For this purpose, we used infrared radiance (10.5-12.5 mu m), acquired from the METEOSAT-5 satellite (similar to 5 km resolution). We found that the `dust index' algorithm, valid for daytime, will no longer hold during the night because dust is then hotter than the theoretical dust-free reference. Hence we followed a `minimum reference' approach instead of a conventional `maximum reference' approach. A detailed analysis suggests that the maximum dust load occurs during the daytime. Over the desert regions of India and Africa, maximum change in dust load is as much as a factor of four between day and night and factor of two variations are commonly observed. By realizing the consequent impact on long wave dust forcing, sensitivity studies were carried out, which indicate that utilizing day time data for estimating the diurnally averaged long-wave dust radiative forcing results in significant errors (as much as 50 to 70%). Annually and regionally averaged long wave dust radiative forcing (which account for the diurnal variation of dust) at the top of the atmosphere over Afro-Asian region is 2.6 +/- 1.8 W m(-2), which is 30 to 50% lower than those reported earlier. Our studies indicate that neglecting diurnal variation of dust while assessing its radiative impact leads to an overestimation of dust radiative forcing, which in turn result in underestimation of the radiative impact of anthropogenic aerosols.

Recent X-ray observations have revealed that early-type galaxies (which usually produce extended double radio sources) generally have hot gaseous haloes extending up to approx102kpc1,2. Moreover, much of the cosmic X-ray background radiation is probably due to a hotter, but extremely tenuous, intergalactic medium (IGM)3. We have presented4–7 an analytical model for the propagation of relativistic beams from galactic nuclei, in which the beams' crossing of the pressure-matched interface between the IGM and the gaseous halo, plays an important role. The hotspots at the ends of the beams fade quickly when their advance becomes subsonic with respect to the IGM. This model has successfully predicted (for typical double radio sources) the observed8 current mean linear-size (approx2Dsime350 kpc)4,5, the observed8–11 decrease in linear-size with cosmological redshift4–6 and the slope of the linear-size versus radio luminosity10,12–14 relation6. We have also been able to predict the redshift-dependence of observed numbers and radio luminosities of giant radio galaxies7,15. Here, we extend this model to include the propagation of somewhat weaker beams. We show that the observed flattening of the local radio luminosity function (LRLF)16–20 for radio luminosity Papproximately 1024 W Hz-1 at 1 GHz can be explained without invoking ad hoc a corresponding break in the beam power function Phi(Lb), because the heads of the beams with Lb < 1025 W Hz-1 are decelerated to sonic velocity within the halo itself, which leads to a rapid decay of radio luminosity and a reduced contribution of these intrinsically weaker sources to the observed LRLF.

This paper deals with the development and performance evaluation of three modified versions of a scheme proposed for medium access control in local area networks. The original scheme implements a collision-free and fair medium arbitration by using a control wire in conjunction with a data bus. The modifications suggested in this paper are intended to realize the multiple priority function in local area networks.
