For the analysis and design of pile foundation used for coastal structures the prediction of cyclic response, which is influenced by the nonlinear behavior, gap (pile soil separation) and degradation (reduction in strength) of soil becomes necessary. To study the effect of the above parameters a nonlinear cyclic load analysis program using finite element method is developed, incorporating the proposed gap and degradation model and adopting an incremental-iterative procedure. The pile is idealized using beam elements and the soil by number of elastoplastic sub-element springs at each node. The effect of gap and degradation on the load-deflection behavior. elasto-plastic sub-element and resistance of the soil at ground-line have been clearly depicted in this paper.

Nonlinear analysis of batter piles in soft clay is performed using the finite element technique. As the batter piles are not only governed by lateral load but also axial load, the effect of P- Delta moment and geometric stiffness matrix is included in the analysis. For implementing the nonlinear soil behavior, reduction in soil strength (degradation), and formation of gap with number of load cycles, a numerical model is developed where a hyperbolic relation is adopted for the soil in static condition and hyperbolic relation considering degradation and gap for cyclic load condition. The numerical model is validated with published experimental results for cyclic lateral loading and the hysteresis loops are developed to predict the load-deflection behavior and soil resistance behavior during consecutive cycles of loading. This paper highlights the importance of a rigorous degradation model for subsequent cycles of loading on the pile-soil system by a hysteretic representation.

Retaining walls are one of the important structures in nearshore environment and are generally designed based on deterministic approaches. The present paper focuses on the reliability assessment of cantilever retaining walls with due consideration to the uncertainties in soil parameters. Reliability analysis quantifies the level of reliability associated with designs and the associated risk. It also gives the formalisation of a design situation that is normally recognised by experienced designers and provides a greater level of consistency in design. The results are also examined in terms of a simple cost function. The study shows that sliding mode is the critical failure mode and the consequent failure costs are also higher. The study also shows that provision of shear key results in improved reliability and reduction in expected costs.

The stability of slopes is a major problem in geotechnical engineering. Of the methods available for the analysis of soil slopes such as limit equilibrium methods, limit analysis and numerical methods such as FEM and FDM, limit equilibrium methods are popular and generally used, owing to their simplicity in formulation and in evaluating the overall factor of safety of slope. However limit equilibrium methods possess certain disadvantages. They do not consider whether the slope is an embankment or natural slope or an excavation and ignore the effect of incremental construction, initial stress, stress strain behavior etc. In the work reported in this paper, a comparative study of actual state of stress and actual factor of safety and Bishop's factor of safety is performed. The actual factor of safety is obtained by consideration of contours of mobilised shear strains. Using Bishop's method of slices, the critical slip surfaces of a number of soil slopes with different geometries are determined and both the factors of safety are obtained. The actual normal stresses and shear stresses are determined from finite difference formulation using FLAG (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continuaa) with Mohr-Coulomb model. The comparative study is performed in terms of parameter lambda(c phi) (= gamma H tan phi/c). I is shown that actual factor of safety is higher than Bishop's factor of safety depending on slope angle and lambda(c phi).

Precompression, wherein the probable settlements are achieved at an accelerated pace through preloading, well before the construction is take up, has been widely used in areas of ground improvement with respect to soft clays. By applying a temporary surcharge load in excess or less than the permanent load, the soil achieves higher initial effective stress and when the final load is applied, the soil experiences, lower load increment ratio or negative load increment ratio. In this paper, based on the laboratory experiments conducted on cochin marine clays and Mangalore marine clays, attempts have been made to analyse the volume change behaviour of preloaded clays. It has been brought out that for a preloaded clay, the final load increment ratio has an important role in its behaviour. Effective preloading not only reduces the final settlement due to primary, the secondary consolidation settlement also gets reduced.

The design of machine foundations are done on the basis of two principal criteria viz., vibration amplitude should be within the permissible limits and natural frequency of machine-foundation-soil system should be away from the operating frequency (i.e. avoidance of resonance condition). In this paper the nondimensional amplitude factor M-m or M-r m and the nondimensional frequency factor a(o m) at resonance are related using elastic half space theory and is used as a new approach for a simplified design procedure for the design of machine foundations for all the modes of vibration fiz. vertical, horizontal, rocking and torsional for rigid base pressure distribution and weighted average displacement condition. The analysis show that one need not know the value of Poisson's ratio for rotating mass system for all the modes of vibration.

The realistic estimation of the dynamic characteristics for a known set of loading conditions continues to be difficult despite many contributions in the past. The design of a machine foundation is generally made on the basis of limiting amplitude or resonant frequency. These parameters are in turn dependent on the dynamic characteristics of soil viz., the shear modulus/stiffness and damping. The work reported herein is an attempt to relate statistically the shear modulus of a soil to its resonant amplitude under a known set of static and dynamic loading conditions as well as wide ranging soil conditions. The two parameters have been statistically related with a good correlation coefficient and low standard error of estimate.

Compacted clay liners are widely used for waste contaminant facilities because of their low cost, large leachate attenuation capacity and resistance to damage and puncture. Commonly used bentonite possess many limitations such as high swelling and shrinkage potential, sensitivity to waste fluid characteristics etc. The paper proposes the use of bentonite-sand mixture containing optimal clay content as liner material. It has been brought out, based on detailed geotechnical investigations, that a mixture containing only about 20 to 39% of bentonite is more suited than the clay alone and they possess.

The vertical uplift resistance of a group of two horizontal coaxial strip anchors, embedded in a general c-phi soil (where c is the unit cohesion and phi is the soil friction angle), has been determined by using the lower bound finite element limit analysis. The variation of uplift factors F-c and F-gamma, due to the components of soil cohesion and unit weight, respectively, with changes in depth (H)/width (B) has been established for different values of vertical spacing (S)/B. As compared to a single isolated anchor, the group of two anchors provides a significantly greater magnitude of F-c for phi <= 20 degrees and with H/B >= 3. The magnitude of F-c becomes almost maximum when S/B is kept closer to 0.5H/B. On the other hand, with the same H/B, as compared to a single anchor, hardly any increase in F-gamma occurs for a group of two anchors.

A low strain shear modulus plays a fundamental role in earthquake geotechnical engineering to estimate the ground response parameters for seismic microzonation. A large number of site response studies are being carried out using the standard penetration test (SPT) data, considering the existing correlation between SPT N values and shear modulus. The purpose of this paper is to review the available empirical correlations between shear modulus and SPT N values and to generate a new correlation by combining the new data obtained by the author and the old available data. The review shows that only few authors have used measured density and shear wave velocity to estimate shear modulus, which were related to the SPT N values. Others have assumed a constant density for all the shear wave velocities to estimate the shear modulus. Many authors used the SPT N values of less than 1 and more than 100 to generate the correlation by extrapolation or assumption, but practically these N values have limited applications, as measuring of the SPT N values of less than 1 is not possible and more than 100 is not carried out. Most of the existing correlations were developed based on the studies carried out in Japan, where N values are measured with a hammer energy of 78%, which may not be directly applicable for other regions because of the variation in SPT hammer energy. A new correlation has been generated using the measured values in Japan and in India by eliminating the assumed and extrapolated data. This correlation has higher regression coefficient and lower standard error. Finally modification factors are suggested for other regions, where the hammer energy is different from 78%. The vertical uplift resistance for a group of two horizontal coaxial rigid strip anchors embedded in clay under undrained condition has been determined by using the upper bound theorem of limit analysis in combination with finite elements. An increase of undrained shear strength of soil mass with depth has been incorporated. The uplift factor F-c gamma has been computed. As compared to a single isolated anchor, a group of two anchors provides greater magnitude of the uplift resistance. For a given embedment ratio, the group of two anchors generates almost the maximum uplift resistance when the upper anchor is located midway between ground surface and the lower anchor. For a given embedment ratio, F-c gamma increases linearly with an increase in the normalized unit weight of soil mass up to a certain value before attaining a certain maximum magnitude; the maximum value of F-c gamma increases with an increase in embedment ratio. The mechanical properties of clays are highly dependent not only on the stress/strain ratio to which the material is subjected but also on the chemistry of the pore fluids which in turn affects the intergranular or the effective stresses. Atterberg limits and vane shear tests were performed with different pore fluids in order to observe how the fine-grained material mechanically responded. The diffuse double layer theory has been used to interpret the data of vane shear tests in order to explain the variation of geotechnical responses with the different clays. Van der Waals forces and double layer forces were obtained and capillary forces calculated. The results show that while for kaolinite and illite the chemistry of the pore fluids has no influence on the water content and hence on the mechanical behaviour of the material, Na-smectite shows a strong correlation between the dielectric constant of the pore fluids and an increase in undrained shear strength. The data obtained extends an understanding of the influence of the dielectric constant (epsilon) of the pore fluids on the geotechnical properties of fine-grained materials.
Assessment of seismic hazard and liquefaction potential of Gujarat based on probabilistic approaches
Resumo:
Gujarat is one of the fastest-growing states of India with high industrial activities coming up in major cities of the state. It is indispensable to analyse seismic hazard as the region is considered to be most seismically active in stable continental region of India. The Bhuj earthquake of 2001 has caused extensive damage in terms of causality and economic loss. In the present study, the seismic hazard of Gujarat evaluated using a probabilistic approach with the use of logic tree framework that minimizes the uncertainties in hazard assessment. The peak horizontal acceleration (PHA) and spectral acceleration (Sa) values were evaluated for 10 and 2 % probability of exceedance in 50 years. Two important geotechnical effects of earthquakes, site amplification and liquefaction, are also evaluated, considering site characterization based on site classes. The liquefaction return period for the entire state of Gujarat is evaluated using a performance-based approach. The maps of PHA and PGA values prepared in this study are very useful for seismic hazard mitigation of the region in future.

Proper analysis for safe design of tailings earthen dam is necessary under static loading and more so under earthquake conditions to reduce damages of important geotechnical structure. This paper presents both static and seismic analyses of a typical section of tailings earthen dam constructed by downstream method and located at a site in eastern part India to store non-radioactive nuclear waste material. The entire analysis is performed using geotechnical softwares FLAC(3D) and TALREN 4. Results are obtained for various possible conditions of the reservoir to investigate the stability under both static and seismic loading condition using 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake acceleration-time history. FLAC(3D) analyses indicate the critical maximum displacement at crest of the proposed tailings dam section is 5.5 cm under the static loading but it increases to about 16.24 cm under seismic loading. The slope stability analyses provide the minimum value of factor of safety for seismic loading as 1.5 as compared to 2.31 for static loading. Amplification of base seismic acceleration is also observed. The liquefaction potential analysis in FLAC(3D) indicates considerable loss of shear strength in the tailings portion of the proposed earthen dam section with significantly high values of pore pressure ratio.

The component and system reliability based design of bridge abutments under earthquake loading is presented in the paper. Planar failure surface has been used in conjunction with pseudo-dynamic approach to compute seismic active earth pressures on an abutment. The pseudo-dynamic method, considers the effect of phase difference in shear waves, soil amplification along with the horizontal seismic accelerations, strain localization in backfill soil and associated post-peak reduction in the shear resistance from peak to residual values along a previously formed failure plane. Four modes of stability viz. sliding, overturning, eccentricity and bearing capacity of the foundation soil are considered in the analysis. The series system reliability is computed with an assumption of independent failure modes. The lower and upper bounds of system reliability are also computed by taking into account the correlations between four failure modes, which is evaluated using the direction cosines of the tangent planes at the most probable points of failure.
