Deviation from local equilibrium between Fe–Ni alloy and (Fe,Ni)TiO3 solid solution in the reaction–diffusion zone of the Fe–NiTiO3 couple at 1273 K is evaluated by comparing the measured compositions in the zone with experimentally determined equilibrium tie-lines. The deviation is quantified by computing the Gibbs energy change for the reaction, Fe + NiTiO3 → FeTiO3 + Ni, from measured compositions in the zone and activity data available in the literature. Except near the extremities of the zone, the computed Gibbs energy change is constant, 8.2 kJ mol−1 higher than the standard Gibbs energy change for the reaction.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. A steady state kinetic model has been developed for the vapor-liquid-solid growth of Si whiskers or nanowires from liquid catalyst droplets. The steady state is defined as one in which the net injection rate of Si into the droplet is equal to the ejection rate due to wire growth. Expressions that represent specific mechanisms of injection and ejection of Si atoms from the liquid catalyst droplet have been used and their relative importance has been discussed. The analysis shows that evaporation and reverse reaction rates need to be invoked, apart from just surface cracking of the precursor, in order to make the growth rate radius dependent. When these pathways can be neglected, the growth rate become radius independent and can be used to determine the activation energies for the rate limiting step of heterogeneous precursor decomposition. The ejection rates depend on the mechanism of wire growth at the liquid-solid interface or the liquid-solid-vapor triple phase boundary. It is shown that when wire growth is by nucleation and motion of ledges, a radius dependence of growth rate does not just come from the Gibbs-Thompson effect on supersaturation in the liquid, but also from the dependence of the actual area or length available for nucleation. Growth rates have been calculated using the framework of equations developed and compared with experimental results. The agreement in trends is found to be excellent. The same framework of equations has also been used to account for the diverse pressure and temperature dependence of growth rates reported in the literature. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Oxygen nonstoichiometry of three ternary oxides. YFeO3-delta, YFe2O4-alpha and Y3Fe5O12-theta. in the system Y-Fe-O was investigated as a function of oxygen partial pressure by thermogravimetry at high temperature. The defects responsible for nonstoichiometry were identified as oxygen vacancies for YFeO3-delta and YFe2O4-alpha although the manner of variation of nonstoichiometric parameter with oxygen partial pressure for these two oxides is quite different. Cation interstitials are the predominant defects in Y3Fe5O12-theta. Gibbs energies of formation of the three nonstoichiometric oxides were determined using solid-state electrochemical cells in the temperature range from 975 to 1475 K. YFe2O4-alpha was found to be stable only above 1391 K. Gibbs energies of formation of the three stoichiometric compounds from their component binary oxides were obtained by combining information from solid state cells with results of thermogravimetric analysis using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. The results can be summarized as: (1/2)Y2O3 + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFeO3;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 250)(J/mol) = 17, 126-8.263T (1/2)Y2O3 + FeO + (1/2)Fe2O3 -> YFe2O4;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 260)(J/mol) = -10,352-13.24T (3/2)Y2O3 + (5/2)Fe2O3 -> Y3Fe5O12;Delta G(f(ox))(O)(+/- 780)(J/mol) = -56, 647-31.091T. We report on the single crystal growth of 50% Sr and Y doped multiferroic DyMnO3 using optical floating zone technique. A comparison of the effect of growth ambience and of chemical substitution on the crystal structure of DyMnO3 is attempted. It is observed that DyMnO3 adopts Pm3m cubic structure with 50% Sr doping whereas with 50% Y doping, the crystal structure is hexagonal P6(3)cm. Orthorhombic Pnma structure is adopted by DyMnO3 when grown in air, whereas hexagonal P6(3)cm structure is obtained when grown under the ambience of argon. The structural polymorphism is discussed in terms of difference in ionic sizes of Sr, Y and Dy, comparable Gibbs free energies and coordination schemes of surrounding oxygens for hexagonal and orthorhombic structures of DyMnO3. Thermodynamic properties of Dysprosium rhodite (DyRhO3) are measured in the temperature range from 900 to 1,300 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of DyRhO3 with O-type perovskite structure from its components binary oxides, Dysprosia with C-rare earth structure and beta-Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure, can be represented by the equation: Delta G(f(OX))(O) (+/- 182)/J mol(-1) = -52710+3.821(T/K). By using the thermodynamic data for DyRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for other phases from the literature, the phase relations in the system Dy-Rh-O are computed. Thermodynamic data for intermetallic phases in the binary system Dy-Rh, required for constructing the chemical potential diagrams, are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for three intermetallics and Miedema's model, consistent with the phase diagram. The results are presented in the form of Gibbs triangle, oxygen potential-composition diagram, and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1,273 K. Temperature-composition diagrams at constant oxygen partial pressures are also developed. The decomposition temperature of DyRhO3 is 1,732 (+/- 2.5) K in pure oxygen and 1,624 (+/- 2.5) K and in air at standard pressure.

Thermodynamic properties of GdRhO3 are investigated in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K by employing a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of GdRhO3 from component binary oxide Gd2O3 with C-rare earth structure and Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure can be expressed as; Delta G(f(ox))(o)(+/- 60)/J mol(-1) = -56603 + 3.78(T/K) Based on the thermodynamic information on GdRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for binary oxides from the literature and estimated properties of Gd-Rh alloys, phase relations are computed for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K. Gibbs free energies for intermetallic phases in the binary Gd-Rh are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for two compositions and Miedema's model, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Isothermal section of the ternary phase diagram, oxygen potential-composition diagram and a 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed. Phase relations in the ternary Gd-Rh-O are also computed as a function of temperature at constant oxygen partial pressures. The ternary oxide, GdRhO3 decomposes to Gd2O3 with B-rare earth structure, metallic Rh and O-2 at 1759(+/- 2) K in pure O-2 and 1649(+/- 2) K in air at a total pressure P-0 -0.1 MPa. The breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation between diffusivity and viscosity at low temperatures is considered to be one of the hallmarks of glassy dynamics in liquids. Theoretical analyses relate this breakdown with the presence of heterogeneous dynamics, and by extension, with the fragility of glass formers. We perform an investigation of the breakdown of the SE relation in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions in order to understand these interrelations. Results from simulations of model glass formers show that the degree of the breakdown of the SE relation decreases with increasing spatial dimensionality. The breakdown itself can be rationalized via the difference between the activation free energies for diffusivity and viscosity (or relaxation times) in the Adam-Gibbs relation in three and four dimensions. The behavior in two dimensions also can be understood in terms of a generalized Adam-Gibbs relation that is observed in previous work. We calculate various measures of heterogeneity of dynamics and find that the degree of the SE breakdown and measures of heterogeneity of dynamics are generally well correlated but with some exceptions. The two-dimensional systems we study show deviations from the pattern of behavior of the three-and four-dimensional systems both at high and low temperatures. The fragility of the studied liquids is found to increase with spatial dimensionality, contrary to the expectation based on the association of fragility with heterogeneous dynamics.

The solid phase formed by a binary mixture of oppositely charged colloidal particles can be either substitutionally ordered or substitutionally disordered depending on the nature and strength of interactions among the particles. In this work, we use Monte Carlo molecular simulations along with the Gibbs-Duhem integration technique to map out the favorable inter-particle interactions for the formation of substitutionally ordered crystalline phases from a fluid phase. The inter-particle interactions are modeled using the hard core Yukawa potential but the method can be easily extended to other systems of interest. The study obtains a map of interactions depicting regions indicating the type of the crystalline aggregate that forms upon phase transition.

Phase relations in the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K were investigated by isothermal equilibration of eleven compositions and analysis of quenched samples using OM, XRD, SEM and EDS. The oxide phase in equilibrium with the alloy changes progressively from NbO to NbO2, NbO2.422 and Nb2O5-x with increasing Rh. Only one ternary oxide NbRhO4 with tetragonal structure (a=0.4708 nm and c=0.3017 nm) was detected. It coexists with Rh and Nb2O5. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of NbRhO4 from its component binary oxides measured using a solid-state electrochemical cell can be represented by the equation; Delta G(f,ox)(o)(J/mol) = -38,350 + 5.818 x T(+/- 96) Constructed on the basis of thermodynamic information of the various alloy and oxide phases are oxygen potential diagram for the system Nb-Rh-O at 1223 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen.

Sub-solidus phase relations in the ternary systems CaO-RuO2-SiO2 and CaO-RuO2-V2O5 have been refined using thermodynamic data on calcium ruthenates, silicates and vanadates. Tie lines are established by considering Gibbs energy change for exchange reactions. Quaternary oxides have not been detected in these systems. Because of the relatively large entropy associated with phase transition of Ca2SiO4 from olivine to alpha' structure at 1120 K, reversal of one tie line is seen in the system CaO-RuO2-SiO2 between 950 and 1230 K. There is no change in sub-solidus phase relation as a function of temperature in the system CaO-RuO2-V2O5. Since vanadium can exist in several lower oxidation states, the computed sub-solidus phase relations are valid only at high oxygen partial pressures. There is fair agreement between the computed phase diagram and the limited experimental information available for CaO-deficient compositions in the literature. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A binary mixture of oppositely charged colloidal particles can self-assemble into either a substitutionally ordered or substitutionally disordered crystalline phase depending on the nature and strength of interactions among the particles. An earlier study had mapped out favorable inter-particle interactions for the formation of substitutionally ordered crystalline phases from a fluid phase using Monte Carlo molecular simulations along with the Gibbs-Duhem integration technique. In this paper, those studies are extended to determine the effect of fluid phase composition on formation of substitutionally ordered solid phases.

In this paper, we propose low-complexity algorithms based on Monte Carlo sampling for signal detection and channel estimation on the uplink in large-scale multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with tens to hundreds of antennas at the base station (BS) and a similar number of uplink users. A BS receiver that employs a novel mixed sampling technique (which makes a probabilistic choice between Gibbs sampling and random uniform sampling in each coordinate update) for detection and a Gibbs-sampling-based method for channel estimation is proposed. The algorithm proposed for detection alleviates the stalling problem encountered at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in conventional Gibbs-sampling-based detection and achieves near-optimal performance in large systems with M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM). A novel ingredient in the detection algorithm that is responsible for achieving near-optimal performance at low complexity is the joint use of a mixed Gibbs sampling (MGS) strategy coupled with a multiple restart (MR) strategy with an efficient restart criterion. Near-optimal detection performance is demonstrated for a large number of BS antennas and users (e. g., 64 and 128 BS antennas and users). The proposed Gibbs-sampling-based channel estimation algorithm refines an initial estimate of the channel obtained during the pilot phase through iterations with the proposed MGS-based detection during the data phase. In time-division duplex systems where channel reciprocity holds, these channel estimates can be used for multiuser MIMO precoding on the downlink. The proposed receiver is shown to achieve good performance and scale well for large dimensions.

We study the problem of analyzing influence of various factors affecting individual messages posted in social media. The problem is challenging because of various types of influences propagating through the social media network that act simultaneously on any user. Additionally, the topic composition of the influencing factors and the susceptibility of users to these influences evolve over time. This problem has not been studied before, and off-the-shelf models are unsuitable for this purpose. To capture the complex interplay of these various factors, we propose a new non-parametric model called the Dynamic Multi-Relational Chinese Restaurant Process. This accounts for the user network for data generation and also allows the parameters to evolve over time. Designing inference algorithms for this model suited for large scale social-media data is another challenge. To this end, we propose a scalable and multi-threaded inference algorithm based on online Gibbs Sampling. Extensive evaluations on large-scale Twitter and Face book data show that the extracted topics when applied to authorship and commenting prediction outperform state-of-the-art baselines. More importantly, our model produces valuable insights on topic trends and user personality trends beyond the capability of existing approaches.

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is a relatively new modulation scheme for multi-antenna wireless communications. It is quite attractive because of its ability to work with less number of transmit RF chains compared to traditional spatial multiplexing (V-BLAST system). In this paper, we show that, by using an optimum combination of number of transmit antennas (N-t) and number of transmit RF chains (N-rf), GSM can achieve better throughput and/or bit error rate (BER) than spatial multiplexing. First, we quantify the percentage savings in the number of transmit RF chains as well as the percentage increase in the rate achieved in GSM compared to spatial multiplexing; 18.75% savings in number of RF chains and 9.375% increase in rate are possible with 16 transmit antennas and 4-QAM modulation. A bottleneck, however, is the complexity of maximum-likelihood (ML) detection of GSM signals, particularly in large MIMO systems where the number of antennas is large. We address this detection complexity issue next. Specifically, we propose a Gibbs sampling based algorithm suited to detect GSM signals. The proposed algorithm yields impressive BER performance and complexity results. For the same spectral efficiency and number of transmit RF chains, GSM with the proposed detection algorithm achieves better performance than spatial multiplexing with ML detection.
