Ferrocene-conjugated L-tryptophan (L-Trp) reduced Schiff base (Fc-TrpH) copper(II) complexes [Cu(Fc-Trp)(L)](ClO(4)) of phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy in 1), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 3), and dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 4), were prepared and characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied. Cationic reduced Schiff base (Ph-TrpH) complexes [Cu(Ph-Trp)(L)(H(2)O)] (ClO(4)) (L = phen in 5; dppz in 6) having the ferrocenyl moiety replaced by a phenyl group and the Zn(II) analogue (7) of complex 4 were prepared and used as control species. The crystal structures of 1 and 5 with respective square-planar CuN(3)O and square-pyramidal CuN(3)O(2) coordination geometry show significantly different core structures. Complexes 1-4 exhibit a Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple near -0.1 V and the Fc(+)-Fc couple at similar to 0.5 V vs SCE in DMF-0.1 M [Bu(4)(n)N] (ClO(4)) (Fc = ferrocenyl moiety). The complexes display a copper(II)-based d-d band near 600 nm and a Fc-centered band at similar to 450 nm in DMF-Tris-HCl buffer. The complexes are efficient binders to calf thymus DNA. They are synthetic chemical nucleases in the presence of thiol or H(2)O(2), forming hydroxyl radicals. The photoactive complexes are cleavers of pUC19 DNA in visible light, forming hydroxyl radicals. Complexes 2-6 show photocytotoxicity in HeLa cancer cells, giving IC(50) values of 4.7, 10.2, 1.3, 4.8, and 4.3 mu M, respectively, in visible light with the appearance of apoptotic bodies. The complexes also show photocytotoxicity in MCF-7 cancer cells. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed with acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining with complex 4 in visible light. The complexes induce caspase-independent apoptosis in the HeLa cells.

In the present work, a thorough investigation of evolution of microstructure and texture has been carried out to elucidate the evolution of texture and grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) during Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) of some model two-phase materials, namely Cu-0.3Cr and Cu-40Zn. Texture of Cu-0.3Cr alloy is similar to that reported for pure copper. On the other hand, in Cu-40Zn alloy, texture evolution in α and β (B2) phases are interdependent. In Cu-0.3Cr alloy, there is a considerable decreases in volume fraction of low angle boundaries (LAGBs), only a slight increase in CSL boundaries, but increase in high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) from 1 pass to 4 passes for both the routes. In the case of Cu-40Zn alloy, there is an appreciable increase in CSL volume fraction.

The effect of strain path change during rolling has been investigated for copper and nickel using X-ray diffraction and electron back scatter diffraction as well as crystal plasticity simulations. Four different strain paths namely: (i) unidirectional rolling; (ii) reverse rolling; (iii) two-step cross rolling and (iv) multi-step cross rolling were employed to decipher the effect of strain path change on the evolution of deformation texture and microstructure. The cross rolled samples showed weaker texture with a prominent Bs {1 1 0}< 1 1 2 > and P(B(ND)) {1 1 0}< 1 1 1 > component in contrast to the unidirectional and reverse rolled samples where strong S {1 2 3}< 6 3 4 > and Cu {1 1 2}< 1 1 1 > components were formed. This was more pronounced for copper samples compared to nickel. The cross rolled samples were characterized by lower anisotropy and Taylor factor as well as less variation in Lankford parameter. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulations indicated that slip activity on higher number of octahedral slip systems can explain the weaker texture as well as reduced anisotropy in the cross rolled samples. The activity coefficients of oxygen in copper-tin alloys at 1 1 00°C have been measured by two different equilibrium methodsthe cell Pt, Ni + NiO I ZrOz solid electrolyte I O[Cu + Sn], cermet. Pt and the equilibrium between Cu + Sn alloys and SnO + SiO, slags established via SnO vapour. The results from both types of measurement confirm the work of Block and co-workers and show that other data are in error. The deoxidation equilibria for Sn in liquid copper, with solid SnO, as deoxidation product, have been evaluated at temperatures of interest in copper smelting.

Solid oxide galvanic cells of the type Pt, Ni-NiO I Solid electrolyte ( Ometa,, Cermet. Pt were used to measure the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper at 11 00 and 1 300eC, and in lead at 11 00'C. Similar cells were used to study the activity coefficient of oxygen in the whole range of Cu + Pb alloys at 1100'C and in lead-rich alloys at 900 and 750'C.The results obtained are discussed in terms of proposed solution models. An equation based on the formation of 'species' of the form M,O in solutions of oxygen in binary alloys is shown to fit the experimental data.

An analysis of the deoxidation of liquid copper is made by use of an Ellingham-type diagram, which incorporates data now available on interactions between copper and the deoxidant in solution. To make the diagram more quantitative information is required on interactions between oxygen and the deoxidants and the activities of component oxides in slags of interest in copper smelting.

Sulfur and oxygen dissolved in nickel and cupronickel melts can be remwed as gaseous oxides of sulfur by a vacuum treatment. Presented in this paper is a new matched thermcxhemical disgran~ that permit.. direct evaluation of the equilibrium partial pressure of SO, as a function of temperature wer an alloy of specified compition. The matched thermochemical diagram consists of a central plot which shows the integral Gibbs' energy of mixing for the binary system SO, at different temperatures. The central plot is flanked on either side by terminal plots of the chemical potentials of oxygen and sulfur, as functions of temperature, for different alloy compositions. By projecting the chemical wtentials of oxygen and sulfur from the terminal lots on to the central diagram, ihe equilibrium partial pressure of S0,can be directly ;cad on the nomograms on the central plot at different temperatures. The matched therrnochemical diagrams are useful in assuring the efficiency of vacuum refining.

Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.
