This paper presents a networked control systems (NCS) framework for wide area monitoring control of smart power grids. We consider a scenario in which wide area measurements are transmitted to controllers at remote locations. We model the effects of delays and packet dropouts due to limited communication capabilities in the grid. We also design a robust networked controller to damp wide-area oscillations based on information obtained from Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS), and analyze the improvement in system stability due to networked control. With communication integration being an important feature of the smart grid, detailed consideration of the effects of communication is essential in the control design for future power systems. We believe that this work is an essential step in this direction.

Chemical functionalization of various hydrocarbons, such as coronene, corannulene, and so forth, shows good promise in electronics applications because of their tunable optoelectronic properties. By using quantum chemical calculations, we have investigated the changes in the corannulene buckybowl structure, which greatly affect its electronic and optical properties when functionalized with different electron-withdrawing imide groups. We find that the chemical nature and position of functional groups strongly regulate the stacking geometry, -stacking interactions, and electronic structure. Herein, a range of optoelectronic properties and structure-property relationships of various imide-functionalized corannulenes are explored and rationalized in detail. In terms of carrier mobility, we find that the functionalization strongly affects the reorganization energy of corannulene, while the enhanced stacking improves hopping integrals, favoring the carrier mobility of crystals of pentafluorophenylcorannulene-5-monoimide. The study shows a host of emerging optoelectronic properties and enhancements in the charge-transport characteristics of functionalized corannulene, which may find possible semiconductor and electronics applications.

The maintenance of ion channel homeostasis, or channelostasis, is a complex puzzle in neurons with extensive dendritic arborization, encompassing a combinatorial diversity of proteins that encode these channels and their auxiliary subunits, their localization profiles, and associated signaling machinery. Despite this, neurons exhibit amazingly stereotypic, topographically continuous maps of several functional properties along their active dendritic arbor. Here, we asked whether the membrane composition of neurons, at the level of individual ion channels, is constrained by this structural requirement of sustaining several functional maps along the same topograph. We performed global sensitivity analysis on morphologically realistic conductance-based models of hippocampal pyramidal neurons that coexpressed six well-characterized functional maps along their trunk. We generated randomized models by varying 32 underlying parameters and constrained these models with quantitative experimental measurements from the soma and dendrites of hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Analyzing valid models that satisfied experimental constraints on all six functional maps, we found topographically analogous functional maps to emerge from disparate model parameters with weak pairwise correlations between parameters. Finally, we derived a methodology to assess the contribution of individual channel conductances to the various functional measurements, using virtual knockout simulations on the valid model population. We found that the virtual knockout of individual channels resulted in variable, measurement and location-specific impacts across the population. Our results suggest collective channelostasis as a mechanism behind the robust emergence of analogous functional maps and have significant ramifications for the localization and targeting of ion channels and enzymes that regulate neural coding and homeostasis.

The paper addresses the effect of particle size on tar generation in a fixed bed gasification system. Pyrolysis, a diffusion limited process, depends on the heating rate and the surface area of the particle influencing the release of the volatile fraction leaving behind residual char. The flaming time has been estimated for different biomass samples. It is found that the flaming time for wood flakes is almost one fourth than that of coconut shells for same equivalent diameter fuel samples. The particle density of the coconut shell is more than twice that of wood spheres, and almost four times compared with wood flakes; having a significant influence on the flaming time. The ratio of the particle surface area to that of an equivalent diameter is nearly two times higher for flakes compared with wood pieces. Accounting for the density effect, on normalizing with density of the particle, the flaming rate is double in the case of wood flakes or coconut shells compared with the wood sphere for an equivalent diameter. This is due to increased surface area per unit volume of the particle. Experiments are conducted on estimation of tar content in the raw gas for wood flakes and standard wood pieces. It is observed that the tar level in the raw gas is about 80% higher in the case of wood flakes compared with wood pieces. The analysis suggests that the time for pyrolysis is lower with a higher surface area particle and is subjected to fast pyrolysis process resulting in higher tar fraction with low char yield. Increased residence time with staged air flow has a better control on residence time and lower tar in the raw gas. (C) 2014 International Energy Initiative. Published by Elsevier Inc. Interaction of adsorbate on charged surfaces, orientation of the analyte on the surface, and surface enhancement aspects have been studied. These aspects have been explored in details to explain the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) spectra of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW or CL-20), a well-known explosive, and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles via biosynthetic route using natural precursor extracts of clove and pepper. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (bio Ag Nps) have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. SERS studies conducted using bio Ag Nps on different water insoluble analytes, such as CL-20 and TNT, lead to SERS signals at concentration levels of 400 pM. The experimental findings have been corroborated with density functional computational results, electrostatic surface potential calculations, Fukui functions and potential measurements.

In Mycobacterium tuberculosis Rv1027c-Rv1028c genes are predicted to encode KdpDE two component system, which is highly conserved across all bacterial species. Here, we show that the system is functionally active and KdpD sensor kinase undergoes autophosphorylation and transfers phosphoryl group to KdpE, response regulator protein. We identified His(642) and Asp(52) as conserved phosphorylation sites in KdpD and KdpE respectively and by SPR analysis confirmed the physical interaction between them. KdpD was purified with prebound divalent ions and their importance in phosphorylation was established using protein refolding and ion chelation approaches. Genetically a single transcript encoded both KdpD and KdpE proteins. Overall, we report that M. tuberculosis KdpDE system operates like a canonical two component system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Four neutral polynuclear magnetic clusters, (Mn6Mn2Na2I)-Mn-III-Na-II(N-3)(8)(mu(1)-O)(2)(L-1)(6)(CH3OH)(2)] (1), (Mn6Na2I)-Na-III(N-3)(4)(mu(4)-O)(2)(L-2)(4)(CH3COO)(4)] (2), Ni-5(II)(N-3)(4)(HL1)(4)(HCOO)(2)(CH3OH)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (3) and (Ni4Na2I)-Na-II(N-3)(4)(HL2)(6)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (4) have been synthesized using tetradentate ligands H2L1-2 along with azide as a co-ligand. H2L1-2 are the products formed in situ upon condensation of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde with 1-aminopropan-2-ol and 1-aminopropan-3-ol, respectively. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and bond valence sum calculation showed that complex 1 is composed of both Mn-III and Mn-II. Complex 3 contains coordinated formate, which was formed upon in situ oxidation of methanol. The magnetic study over a wide range of temperatures of all the complexes (1-4) showed that 1 and 2 are antiferromagnetic whereas other two (3-4) are predominantly ferromagnetic. The estimated ground states of the complexes are S approximate to 3(1), S = 4(2), S = 5(3) and S approximate to 4(4), respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Periodic estimation, monitoring and reporting on area under forest and plantation types and afforestation rates are critical to forest and biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management and for meeting international commitments. This article is aimed at assessing the adequacy of the current monitoring and reporting approach adopted in India in the context of new challenges of conservation and reporting to international conventions and agencies. The analysis shows that the current mode of monitoring and reporting of forest area is inadequate to meet the national and international requirements. India could be potentially over-reporting the area under forests by including many non-forest tree categories such as commercial plantations of coconut, cashew, coffee and rubber, and fruit orchards. India may also be under-reporting deforestation by reporting only gross forest area at the state and national levels. There is a need for monitoring and reporting of forest cover, deforestation and afforestation rates according to categories such as (i) natural/primary forest, (ii) secondary/degraded forests, (iii) forest plantations, (iv) commercial plantations, (v) fruit orchards and (vi) scattered trees.

The interfacing of aromatic molecules with biomolecules to design functional molecular materials is a promising area of research. Intermolecular interactions determine the performance of these materials and therefore, precise control over the molecular organization is necessary to improve functional properties. Herein we describe the tunable biomimetic molecular engineering of a promising n-type organic semiconductor, naphthalene diimide (NDI), in the solid state by introducing minute structural mutations in the form of amino acids with variable Ca-functionality. For the first time we could achieve all four possible crystal packing modes, namely cofacial, brickwork, herringbone and slipped stacks of the NDI system. Furthermore, amino acid conjugated NDIs exhibit ultrasonication induced organogels with tunable visco-elastic and temperature responsive emission properties. The amino acid-NDI conjugates self-assemble into 0D nanospheres and 1D nanofibers in their gel state while the ethylamine-NDI conjugate forms 2D sheets from its solution. Photophysical studies indicated the remarkable influence of molecular ordering on the absorption and fluorescence properties of NDIs. Interestingly, the circular dichroism (CD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed the existence of helical ordering of NDIs in both solution and solid state. The chiral amino acids and their conformations with respect to the central NDI core are found to influence the nature of the helical organization of NDIs. Consequently, the origin of the preferential handedness in the helical organization is attributed to transcription of chiral information from the amino acid to the NDI core. On account of these unique properties, the materials derived from NDI-conjugates might find a wide range of future interdisciplinary applications from materials to biomedicine.

Single-stranded DNA binding proteins (SSBs) are vital in all organisms. SSBs of Escherichia coli (EcoSSB) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MtuSSB) are homotetrameric. The N-terminal domains (NTD) of these SSBs (responsible for their tetramerization and DNA binding) are structurally well defined. However, their C-terminal domains (CTD) possess undefined structures. EcoSSB NTD consists of beta 1-beta 1'-beta 2-beta 3-alpha-beta 4-beta 45(1)-beta 45(2)-beta 5 secondary structure elements. MtuSSB NTD includes an additional beta-strand (beta 6) forming a novel hook-like structure. Recently, we observed that MtuSSB complemented an E. coli Delta ssb strain. However, a chimeric SSB (m beta 4-beta 5), wherein only the terminal part of NTD (beta 4-beta 5 region possessing L-45 loop) of EcoSSB was substituted with that from MtuSSB, failed to function in E. coli in spite of its normal DNA binding and oligomerization properties. Here, we designed new chimeras by transplanting selected regions of MtuSSB into EcoSSB to understand the functional significance of the various secondary structure elements within SSB. All chimeric SSBs formed homotetramers and showed normal DNA binding. The m beta 4-beta 6 construct obtained by substitution of the region downstream of beta 5 in m beta 4-beta 5 SSB with the corresponding region (beta 6) of MtuSSB complemented the E. coli strain indicating a functional interaction between the L-45 loop and the beta 6 strand of MtuSSB.

Porous alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures have been synthesized by a simple sol-gel route. The alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures are poorly crystalline and porous with BET surface area of 386 m(2) g(-1). The high discharge capacitance of alpha-Fe2O3 electrodes is 300 F g(-1) when the electrodes are cycled in 0.5 M Na2SO3 at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The capacitance retention after 1000 cycles is about 73% of the initial capacitance at a current density of 2 A g(-1). The high discharge capacitance of alpha-Fe2O3 in comparison with the literature reports are attributed to high surface area and porosity of the iron oxide prepared in the present study. As the iron oxides are inexpensive, the capacity of alpha-Fe2O3 is expected to be of potential use for supercapacitor application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Graphene with large surface area and robust structure has been proposed as a high storage capacity anode material for Li ion batteries. While the inertness of pristine graphene leads to better Li kinetics, poor adsorption leads to Li clustering, significantly affecting the performance of the battery. Here, we show the role of defects and doping in achieving enhanced adsorption without compromising on the high diffusivity of Li. Using first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we carry out a comprehensive study of diffusion kinetics of Li over the plane of the defective structures and calculate the change in the number of Li atoms in the vicinity of defects, with respect to pristine graphene. Our results show that the Li-C interaction, storage capacity and the energy barriers depend sensitively on the type of defects. The un-doped and boron doped mono-vacancy, doped di-vacancy up to two boron, one nitrogen doped di-vacancy, and Stone-Wales defects show low energy barriers that are comparable to pristine graphene. Furthermore, boron doping at mono-vacancy enhances the adsorption of Li. In particular, the two boron doped mono-vacancy graphene shows both a low energy barrier of 0.31 eV and better adsorption, and hence can be considered as a potential candidate for anode material.

Three copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)(MeOH)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)] (2), and Cu-5(N-3)(10)(L-1)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with 2-(2-pyridyl)ethylamine] have been synthesized using lower molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligand with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of the complexes 1 and 2 contains Cu-4(II) building blocks; however, they have distinct basic and overall structures due to a small change in the bridging mode of the peripheral pair of copper atoms in the linear tetranudear structures. Interestingly, these changes are the result of changing the solvent system (MeOH/H2O to EtOH/H2O) used for the synthesis, without changing the proportions of the components (metal to ligand ratio 2:1). Using even lower proportions of the ligand, another unique complex was isolated with Cu-5(II) building units, forming a two-dimensional complex (3). Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic (very weak) and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional, and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1 and 2 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

A pair of commuting operators (S,P) defined on a Hilbert space H for which the closed symmetrized bidisc Gamma = {(z(1) + z(2), z(1)z(2)) : vertical bar z(1)vertical bar <= 1, vertical bar z(2)vertical bar <= 1} subset of C-2 is a spectral set is called a Gamma-contraction in the literature. A Gamma-contraction (S, P) is said to be pure if P is a pure contraction, i.e., P*(n) -> 0 strongly as n -> infinity Here we construct a functional model and produce a set of unitary invariants for a pure Gamma-contraction. The key ingredient in these constructions is an operator, which is the unique solution of the operator equation S - S*P = DpXDp, where X is an element of B(D-p), and is called the fundamental operator of the Gamma-contraction (S, P). We also discuss some important properties of the fundamental operator.

Smoothed functional (SF) schemes for gradient estimation are known to be efficient in stochastic optimization algorithms, especially when the objective is to improve the performance of a stochastic system However, the performance of these methods depends on several parameters, such as the choice of a suitable smoothing kernel. Different kernels have been studied in the literature, which include Gaussian, Cauchy, and uniform distributions, among others. This article studies a new class of kernels based on the q-Gaussian distribution, which has gained popularity in statistical physics over the last decade. Though the importance of this family of distributions is attributed to its ability to generalize the Gaussian distribution, we observe that this class encompasses almost all existing smoothing kernels. This motivates us to study SF schemes for gradient estimation using the q-Gaussian distribution. Using the derived gradient estimates, we propose two-timescale algorithms for optimization of a stochastic objective function in a constrained setting with a projected gradient search approach. We prove the convergence of our algorithms to the set of stationary points of an associated ODE. We also demonstrate their performance numerically through simulations on a queuing model.
